Mozilla Community Space Taipei Status Report, May 2014 - Feb 2017

“摩茲工寮, Mozilla Community Space Taipei” is an event/meeting/working space and shelter to the local Mozillians, Mozilla volunteers, and OSS communities.

It is the first of three spaces besides Manila Space & Jakarta Space. The spaces are leading by Mozilla Open Innovation Group's “community spaces” project, managing by local MozTW volunteers.

Here I will share about some brief status of the Taipei Space.

(I'll use “MozTW Space” or “Space” as the abbreviation to “Mozilla Community Space Taipei” below.)

MozTW Community

Mozilla Taiwan Community (MozTW) is a local Mozilla volunteer community. We had contributing by localizing, promoting Firefox, Mozilla and open cultures to Mozilla and open source projects since 2004.

MozTW maintained an online product portal and forum, hosting many offline events and engaging with other Asia Mozillians and open source hackers.

History of Space

The Community Space was an idea initially raised by William Quiviger in 2013, and sponsored by WPR team. We started the first experimental space in Taipei spring 2014.

After April 2016, the space project had transitioned to Participation Team, supported by Brian King. In February 2017, it has been transitioned to Open Innovation Group with the help by George Roter and Konstantina.

Keyholders

MozTW Space is co-managing by “Keyholder,” 15 local Mozilla volunteers. Keyholders are all vouched Mozillians, and has same privilege. People need to be countersigned by more than 50% of Mozillian visitors (in last three months) when they applied for the position. The threshold represents the community's support to the applicant.

Visitors & Events

Everyone is welcome to visiting MozTW space when there is any Keyholder inside. However, it's not opening 24 hours / 7 days a week due to the volunteers ability. In last three years, we managed to open the space 20~25 days per month in average. (mostly the night time)

Besides Mozilla events, we also welcome and support all open culture and programming communities to hosting their events in the MozTW Space. Totally there are more than 8000 visitors and 760 events since May 2014.

Some of the most closing cooperate communitiess including G0V, OSM, Wikimedia Taiwan, Creative Commons Taiwan, Open Culture Foundation, SITCON (Students Information Technology Conference) and WoFOSS (Women in Free and Open Source Software in Taiwan).

One of the primary goals is to introduce Mozilla and our belief to new friends. In last six month (Sep-Feb), more than 410 visitors had learned about Mozilla on their first visit to the Space (out of 1800 visitors in 167 events).

We introduce Mozilla, Manifesto, our different projects, topics around internet health and policy, and new technologies we're building.

Dev-rel

Since Dec 2015, we put emphasis on developer relationship. There are 168 developer events, and we introduce Rust, Servo, HTML5, WebAPI and developer tools to more than 4000 local programmers.

Social Engagement

On social engagement, we had received 2550 Check-ins and 1100 Likes on Facebook and Foursquare. And in fact, we didn't ask people to do it. These social channels had become a good way for us to promoting openness.

… to the visitors around the world - including Mark Surman, Brian King, Larissa Shapiro, William Quiviger, Dietrich Ayala, Max Ogden, Fa-ti Fan, 田爱娜 and many more.

MozTW Lab

One of the best events is “MozTW Lab,” Mozillian weekly meetup on each Friday night. Volunteers get together to socialize, work, and give lightning talks on various topics including Mozilla's latest update.

This meetup had been running for seven years, and there are 77 lightning talk sessions recorded/live broadcasted through Vidyo from Space since 2014.

3 different types of participation - TW Mozillians in HKOSCon from 2014-2016

Last month in 6/24-26, several MozTW community members flied to Hong Kong visited HKOSCon, Hong Kong Open Source Conference. This is our 3rd time joining the event, and we had tried 3 different forms of participation, here I would like to share a bit about it.

HKOSCon

Hong Kong Open Source Conference is annual open source conference in Hong Kong, co-hosted by 3 communities, HKCOTA, HKLUG and Open Source Hong Kong.

One of the event's characteristic is that HKOSCon is formed by volunteers and students, not by for-profit company (which is pretty similar to COSCUP, another open source conference in Taiwan).

Actually, according to one of the funder (and Mozilla Rep) Sammy Fung said, we can think it as a smaller (around 500 ppls) and more internationalized (English-based) version of COSCUP, which have around 2k participants and use Chinese as main language.

According to my observation, participants in HKOSCon is a combination of local (Hong Kong) enginners and students, speakers and students from Taiwan, and foreign speakers.

2014 - Chinese Mozillians Unite

Booth and Forum Session

2014 (March 29) is our first time to participating in HKOSCon. We tried to gather 8 Reps from Hong Kong (2), Taiwan (3) and China (3) together in the conference. We host a typical Mozilla community booth, a forum (“Mozilla communities in Chinese-speaking regions”) and a private meetup to discuss various topics about building Mozilla communities in the region.

Hong Kong is a special place that is 1) accessable by people from both Taiwan and China, without many political problems and limitations, 2) use both Chinese / English as primary language, and 3) close to all major east-Asian cities, so it's pretty pratical to be choosen as the place that we all gathered. I also experience that Wikimania 2013 (took place in Hong Kong Polytechnic University) also take the advantage to gathered many China / Taiwan contributors. Singapore has similar advantages but it just 4 times far away for us.

What worked and what didn't?

The idea of unite the Mozillians from different places really works, and I believed that we need to do it more (re-engage MozCamp perhaps?) But next time if we want to take HKOSCon as a chance, we may need to plan a whole dedicated day for Mozillian meetup, to work longer besides participating inside confernece, to get into more detailed discussion. (which may look similar to Leadership Summit and MozCamp beta in India?)

2015 - Involved more Taiwanese Mozillians

Booth and Workshop

In 2015 (June 26-27), we take a different approach that bring more Taiwanese Mozillian to get involved to HKOSCon. Total 7 Mozillians (5 Reps) joined. This year we also focus our most effort on the booth, and I personally host a Webmaker workshop.

The theme of the booth is FoxYeah campaign, we asked people to take selfie photos with 5 FoxYeah banners and received stickers. Most participants already know Firefox and was our user, so we would like to recall their attention back to the core value of Firefox.

For the Webmaker workshop, due to the design of the room and session length, it's not really work out well. Also I feel that Webmaker is not really suitable for this developer-focus conference participants that it just too simple.

What worked and what didn't?

Designing a more interactive booth event worked really good, we had interacting with many graceful people at the booth, and got more then 40 “FoxYeah photos”.

Webmaker workshop which focus on education and entering level of contributors not work. The main participants of HKOSCon are more engineer based (far more then COSCUP) and we need our workshop to be more technical for them.

2016 - Just focus on session

This year, due to overwhelmed workload after London Allhands, I didn't pay as much planning effot as previous 2 years that can involved many participants together. Instead, I try just to focus on session, and keep it simple that only 3 TW Mozillians joined and gave 2 sessions, debrief my journey of contributing in Mozilla and yajs.vim, JavaScript syntax highlight for VIM by Othree, another speaker from TW community*.

Besides sessions from the community volunteer, there are another 2 from Mozilla paid-staff - Mozilla Eir, connecting device topic by Kevin Hu and Fuzzing testing by Gary Kwong.

What worked and what didn't?

Because that we didn't set a booth, it's hard to evaluate how many attendees is interesting in participating Mozilla this time (compare to the previous 2 years that we had contributing forms at our booth).

But the Fuzzing and Othree's HTML5-related sessions, as well as my session did attach many people and I can feel overall better response then last year's workshop. Another reason of the better atmosphere at sessions may due to several OSS participating-related sessions had been organized next each other in schedule, and thus attached the right audiences.

And suggestion for the future...

From our previous experiences, here I come up with some suggestions for next year,

Bring in more foreign technical speakers

There are more developers in HKOSCon that is interesting in technical topics, engineering speaker can have better interaction in HKOSCon, things like “how we use Rust” or “How do we do Firefox release engineering” should do well there.
Booth is necessery

With only session, it's hard for us to interaction with all partcipants, booth does that well. Besides giving out stickers and demonstrating hardware / flyers, plan a simple event such as FoxYeah photo campaign in 2015 will please everyone.
7~10 Mozillians is good numbers for participation

We had around 10 Mozillians (excludes local HK Mozillians which are all dedicated to run HKOSCon) in both 2014 and 2015 HKOSCon, 5~7 of them are volunteers. It's enough to both manage a booth and give 3 to 5 sessions with this numbers, and the rate of Mozillians to all participants would be around 2%.

日前，我與 Ernest、BobChao、Orin、RJ、魏藥、Peter 等共七位 MozTW 成員，一同前往香港開源年會，並擺設 Mozilla 攤位。關於活動的情形，歡迎閱讀以上魏藥及 Ernest 的直擊文章。

Here I will add some of my own experience & observation.
以下紀錄一些我個人的經驗與觀察。

Create big banners from FoxYeah stickers to demostrate, is indeed good try on our booth. We can take chance to sharing ideas with people on those topics of banner (security, customize...), and ask people to choose their favorite one to take photo, has really positive feedback.

將 FoxYeah 標語製作成大扛棒在攤位上展示，並讓人拿著最喜歡的標語拍照，是一個準備簡單，卻非常有笑點的小活動。不但容易吸引目光，也成為與參觀者的交流話題。

Hong Kong local mozillians were basically all workers for HKOSCon, so we had to self-help on organize booth. Carry those Firefox OS devices and Firefox souvenir were not easy - the stickers are so-heavy. We had to separate them to everyone to carry in luggage when flight. Printer big stickers and make slogan banner on sight is good idea.

香港當地的 Mozillians 都是 HKOSCon 的主辦成員，我們只好自力救濟。要把這麼多展示品（包含近十台 Firefox OS 裝置、與各類 Firefox 紀念品）從台灣帶到香港，的確是蠻麻煩的一件事，貼紙卡片又重又多，要讓大家平均分攤裝行李箱托運。印貼紙跟買瓦楞版當場製作，又快效果又好。

We also got 21 filled contribute forms at the booth. Hope that we can get some more contributors at Hong Kong. (BTW, on our contribute form, we had various contributed area for people to choose their prefer, and most of people select multiple area. We should improve our [online form](http://mozilla.org/contribute) to accepting multiple choices too.)

本次攤位上，我們亦收集到 21 名有意貢獻者的聯絡方式。希望未來在香港能有更多 Mozilla 貢獻者。

Webmaker Workshop 工作坊

Host a Webmaker workshop is one of my main topic in HKOSCon. But the lecture room is under "speak" mode, and not too easy for workshop that it's hard to see how attendees' status. Fortunately that my content is half exercise and half lecture intro.

主講 Webmaker 工作坊，是這次參與 HKOSCon 的主要任務。可惜的是，雖然參加者大多都有攜帶電腦，但是演講形式的座位安排，不太好掌握台下參加者的參與狀況，還是不太適合工作坊。幸好我準備的內容是實作與演講兼具。

This is also my first time to connecting Keynote, iPad (remote control and viewing keynote speaker note), Firefox, iPhone (share internet to mac), Reflector 2 (receive Chrome Cast mirrow from Mi2S), and Mi2S Android phone all together on stage. Perhaps the environment is too complicated thus my Mac hang for twice and it tooks me 5 mins to reboot when in 2/3 of workshop. Too bad that it cost me too much time and I cannot play last video in slide. I'll need to simplified the environment next time.

這也是我第一次同時使用 Keynote、iPad（連動 Keynote 看講者備忘）、Firefox、iPhone（分享網路給 Mac，再作熱點給 iPad 與 Android 手機）、Reflector 2（用於接收 Chrome Cast Mirrow 展示 Android 手機的 Webmaker App）與一台小米 2S Android 手機等六項裝置與軟體，在進行到約 2/3 時，遭遇到電腦當機了兩次，浪費了約五分鐘，讓最後一片短片來不及播放。環境太複雜，下次最好還是精簡一點，避免再次發生。

Webmaker + Workshop @HKOSCon 2015

Accommodation 住宿

Our accommodation "Royal Park Hotel" is really really valuable! Locating in central Shatin, 10 mins walk from train station all inside mall (cool and easy for luggage!), half hour metro to downtown, 1 hour Airport bus directly to hotel door. The best is price, 4 star hotel with large room (twice as large as hotel room in Kowloon) equipment with bathtub, the price only about 130 USD per 4pax room per night. (Almost same price to 2pax room.)

這次我們的住宿「帝都酒店」真的非常超值！極力推薦給四人以上一起到香港的朋友。地點位於沙田市中心，沙田車站約只要走十分鐘，全程都是室內商場（又涼又好拉行李）。搭地鐵不用半小時就能進到九龍，且 A41 機場巴士一小時直達飯店門口。最棒的是，四星級飯店，兩間四人房共定七晚，稅前一晚不到一千港幣（跟兩人房價格差不多），而且房間是九龍飯店的兩倍大以上（甚至有浴缸！）

MozTW Steps - 服務學習專案規劃

目前各大學都有一堂服務學習必修課程，通常是安排在大一時且零學分（不影響成績），目的是想讓同學可以付出自己的時間（通常一學期 10~15 小時），協助各項公益計畫或團體，有益於社會且從中學習。

過去兩年中，MozTW 與教育部校園自由軟體中心（OSSACC）合作，在交大與中央大學，執行了三學期的服務學習計畫，讓同學從翻譯 Mozilla 補助說明文章、推廣與說明影片、網頁開發技術文章、Firefox 套件與軟體的中文化…等等項目中選擇，運用自己的閒暇時間，對 Mozilla 專案做出些許貢獻，接觸並了解開源碼計畫的執行方式。

MozTW Step

三月時，MozTW 在台中舉辦了兩天一夜的 MozTW Steps 活動，對於各專案計畫進行未來半年期的分析與討論。對於服務學習專案，我們也進行了一些規劃。這是討論時的海報，以下將會簡要說明。

計畫目的

服務學習計劃的目的，主要有以下幾點：

讓社群能接觸年輕一代的同學，傳達 Mozilla 理念給更多人
尋找認同且持續貢獻 Mozilla 專案的成員
推進 Firefox 補助說明文章翻譯完成度，協助更多使用者
增加相關影片的字幕，益於推廣的理念

過去成果

我們簡要分析了一下過去的成果。共有 49 名同學參與，完成了 20 部宣傳短片字幕、38 篇 Firefox 補助說明文章、10 篇網頁開發技術文章、4 篇報導與 1 個 Firefox 套件的中文化。

近期參與對象

本年度服務學習的合作對象，包含交大資工的大一同學約 15 人；另外中央大學也由 Angelboy 號招資訊社團中有興趣的同學進行。

挑戰

服務學習計劃的主要挑戰有二：

如何找人

要將服務學習推廣到一個科系，首先要有該科系負責該課程的教授認可，而與教授接洽、聯繫則需要各科系的在學同學協助。

如何帶領

專案執行時，會先讓同學選定有興趣的項目，再由我們寄送「如何進行」的說明文件。同學做完後我們則需要編輯、修定、掌握成品的品質。

這方面則面臨能協助與修訂成果的人不夠多，對成果與品質的掌握度不足的問題。

持續貢獻

每學期的計畫結束後，我們尚無進行後續追蹤，無法了解參與的同學是否仍持續貢獻，也因而無法有效擴大貢獻者基礎。

解決方案

針對上述問題，我們則想到了一些解決的方法。

製作計畫網頁

在「如何找人」的問題上，透過製作「服務學習專案網頁」的方式，彙整成果，並且加上「如有興趣參與，歡迎聯繫…」的聯絡資訊。一方面如果有教授看到感興趣，即可與我們連上線；另一方面，整理出更清楚的相關資訊，也可讓想協助推動的同學，更容易提供負責教授參考。

校園大使

我們發現服務學習計劃，與 Mozilla Taiwan 公司已執行兩屆的「Firefox 校園大使（FSA）」，可以構成相輔相成的雙環。參加過服務學習的同學，我們可以推薦他們參加校園大使，更加深入 Mozilla 的文化與內涵；而歷屆的校園大使，對 Mozilla 已有充足的了解，除可成為協助新同學進行服務學習的角色，也可協助我們聯繫各科系的負責老師，找尋新的合作對象。

招募十位歷屆的校園大使，協助他們成為服務學習的 Mentor。
聯繫參加過服務學習的同學，推薦他們參與校園大使計畫。
尋求一至兩人的協助，製作服務學習計劃網頁。

Mozillians in Hong Kong Open Source Conference (HKOSC)

HKOSC 2014

Hong Kong Open Source Conference aka HKOSC, is an annual conference in Hong Kong for open source community. In 2014/3/29, we took this good chance to gather Mozillians (Reps) from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China together in here, helping a forum session, a booth and also have a meeting discussing various topic about building Mozilla community in Chinese region. Here is the first part of my brief report about what we'd done and what have we discussed.

Mozilla Booth

We host a Mozilla booth in the conference, displaying some flyers, Firefox OS devices (APC Paper, Keon & ZTE phones), plushies, give out Firefox badges and a recruiting form for interesting people to leave their contact messages.

There are about 250 people join the conference, and most of them had been visit our booth and try the Firefox OS devices. There are 16 people from China and Hong Kong filled the contribute forms, I hope that we'll have them success on-boarding and start contributing.

Mozilla Session & Forum

There is 2 session related to Mozilla on HKOSC, "David and Goliah: from Firefox browser to Firefox OS" by Taiwan paid-staff Michael Hung and forum "Mozilla communities in Chinese-speaking regions" by all participated reps.

The forum is hosting by Richard Lin*. we had featuring Mozilla Story, give a brief intro of Mozilla, each 3 region communities, their own events, how we cooperation across the region and with the local MoCos in Taiwan and in China, and introducing on the opportunity of contribute Mozilla.

MozTW 為何要堅持社群獨立性—智財局封網法案的案例 The case of MozTW campaign against internet regulation bill

Brief for Mozillians: The slides is about an local campaign we ran, against a SOPA-like bill in last June (2013) in Taiwan. I'd like to share this experience for all, to get the idea that what can we do as a Mozillians and a Mozilla community, to dealing with these kinds of political issues for protect internet freedom.

MozTW 作為一個 Mozilla 的在地社群，維持獨立性一直是我們堅持的一件事情。

Mozilla 的社群成員多數有某種「Mozilla 如果違反 Mozilla 宣言，我們身為社群的一份子必群起反對」的原則，從各種爭議，例如先前的「首頁廣告」、「Brondon Eich 的正反爭議」中都可以看到。當然我們 MozTW 也不例外，從反對 Firefox 台灣版行為追蹤、應對 mozilla.org/zh-TW 的強制轉址上，都可以看出我們身為 Mozilla 社群，維持獨立性、堅持應有價值的意義。

去年（2013 年）六月的智財局封網事件，也是 MozTW 社群獨立行動以堅持 Mozilla 信念的代表案例。在那之後，我們真的一直沒有空把相關的前因後果整理出來。趁著這週在舊金山參加 Mozilla 基金會全員會議，跟其他人分享相關案例的機會，整理了一份投影片。歡迎各位留言或到 moztw-general 提供意見與建議。

長久一來一直礙於人力不足，其實社群還可以做的更多、還有更多事可以做的更好，歡迎有興趣協助的人一起加入。

Wikimania 2013 in Hong Kong

I'd been traveling to Hong Kong participate in Wikimania 2013 at Aug 7-11, in sponsored by Mozilla Reps program on Plane ticket and accommodation. and this is my report of the event, summarize what I do and what I learned at the conference.

Event Planning

Registration

Wikimania were open registration for everyone, and there are 6 different ticket prices according to the registration time (early/regular/late registration) and identity (volunteer with Wikimedia accounts or not). It's different to our experience for Mozilla conference / meetup, that all Mozilla globally events I'd participant before were invite only, and most of them were for core contributors. Instead of "all insider", there are many leisure contributors (specially many students from China) showing up in Wikimania.

Volunteer

The Wikimedia Hong Kong chapter had recruit a hundreds of local students as volunteer workers in the conference, since they're non-community contributors, it's a little hard to have some kinds of interaction with them (discussion on Wikipedia or on OSS culture).

After the closing ceremony, the organizer had let volunteers line-up outside of the hall. That is a clever arrangement, enable every participant to see in the faces of all volunteers, and give the warm good-bye to each other.

Arrival

The Wikimania host team wait for the participants right at outside of customs at Hong Kong Airport, just as we do at many Mozilla's volunteer events. But at Hong Kong, there are many ways to get in besides air transport, there are a lots of participants get into Hong Kong by going through border by rail. I don't know whether they had same preparation at the railway customs at train station to China.

Accommodation

Wikimania had offer special contracted dormitory for a good price (USD 27 per person per night) for participants at Hong Kong Baptist University. It's 30 mins away from the conference's venue by bus, and the conference provides shuttle bus at each morning and evening. This arrange must saved a lot for Wikimedia Fundation, because a great numbers of their community contributors need to stayed for more than 4 nights for pre-conference, and the normal price of hotels costs about 150 USD per night at Hong Kong.

Venue

The venue of the Wikimania 2013 is Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), a famous university which is also known by us in Taiwan for many years. PolyU had been already set partnership with Wikimedia Hong Kong community from 2012 spring, when they trying to biding for the event. To partner with the venue at such ahead of time, became one of the major advantage of WMHK community to biding.

The conference used 8 lecture halls (including the main auditorium, capacity of 1000 people) and about 10 class rooms during the event, which spreading in 5 different buildings around main opening space "Logo Square", which used for dining and community booth.

The facilities of the opening space "Logo Square" including tables for booth, a big stair which people can sit, a huge TV screen showing videos from different Wikimedia chapters. People can greet each others, chat, social and get drinks at the square through the whole event. It's also providing good free dining experience than typical cafeteria, and able to host all thousand participants at same time.

Foods

The conference provides Chinese/western buffet on breakfast and lunch, with coffee, soda and bottle water through the whole events for free. The free and more then enough cokes was sooo good in the summer day time of Hong Kong. It make me (and other peoples) happy with little expense of conference.

Events

Welcome Party

The welcome party were held in a famous sightseeing venue "sky100 Observation Deck". Wikimania reserved half of the observation deck and prepared buffet inside. But the venue is too small, full fill with hundreds of participants, and amount of foods is not enough. The long line-up of people for buffet make the venue even smaller and harder to wandering around. But overall the choice of venue is good, treat the people who first came to Hong Kong with the night view of the city.

Closing party

The closing party is barbecue style dinner at "Shek O beach" side, which is a very popular vocation venue of Hong Kong at weekend (and really full of people). It's really far away from the city central (~20 km) and from the public transportation system (30 mins by bus to the nearest subway). Wikimania offer the shuttle bus to and from the venue, but people will need to stay until the end of party.

I havn't stay at the party because the line-up of the food is even longer than welcome party, but it tooks me more then 1.5 hour to quit from the beach, line-up 1 hour for the public bus and get to the nearest subway station. I think we definitely have to prevent for such kinds of problem, find a venue near public transportation system, if we're going to prepare for same events in future.

Opening Ceremony

The content of the opening ceremony of Wikimania is pretty the same to the other conference, including the speech from organizer and from Jimmy Wales, and some slides of the reviewing of the foundation.

The organizer had prepared a special 15mins performance "Lion Dance" at the beginning of the ceremony, it really is a fascinate exhibition of Chinese culture to participant from around the world. We can learn from them that trying to arrange some kinds of special perform or shows, if we're going to hold a international events.

Sessions

Scheduling

The schedule of Wikimania 2013 include near 130 sessions as 8 tracks in 3 days. The content including speeches, discussions and about one track of workshops each day. The tracks were organized in different topics, that easy to locate interesting one, from so many choice in the same time. But on my own opinon, the number of sessions is it a little more, because some of that I attendding had no more than 10 audience.

Due to my roles and focus at Mozilla and at Mozilla Taiwan Community, I choose to attend most of the session at 'community', 'Asia' and 'future' tracks. I feels there are 3 points worth to share.

Future

As my first Wikimania experience, I feels that "Future" is the main topic of the conference. For ex., what's the future of Wikipedia would be? how will the community and contributors look like in 10 years from now, how "scary" will the future if things go all wrong...

This theme carried out with a panel "Imagine the Wikipedia in 2022". In the beginning of the panel, the host said that she carries a "Time Machine", and it's 2022 in sudden, then different Wikimedia staff shared what's happening "in this 10 years", including funding, contributor evolution, organization/profitable company structure and many other aspects.

In another session "Ghosts of Wikis Yet to Come: Three Stories of Wikimedia's Future", the presenter shared 3 kinds of future story of Wikipedia. In the first future, Wikipedia turned out to be a corporate mega-mind controlled information database. In the second future, Wikipedia turned out to be social-powed portal, full of blur blur from your friends. In the other future, Wikipedia turned to "Wikiville", a small tribe of editors against every new technology like SNS, AR, or semantic web, they only cared about "information quality", and faced the huge crisis.

In these sessions, they point out the difficulties Wikipedia currently facing, and the most important, what will it be if they don't take changes. After the session, participants will easy to understand why we need to adopt these changes, and "the changes" were covered by other part of the conferences to be deeply discussion.

Diversity

Wikipedian discuss contributor's diversity in many different domains, including locale, gender, age, article topics and ways of funding. We all know how importance of diversity in locales, for that Firefox is the browser with most l10n versions in world, but I didn't see much we discussed on diversity of contributors genders and other.

Male and female has different care, interest and familiar domain, The research shows that female editors focused on peoples and arts, while males focus on geography and science. Currently the gender problem of Wikipedia is that there are 90% of users and contributors are male, and most of them is likely a "geeky man". This problem causing the article bias in topic. I see many projects carried out to solve the problem in many sessions, engaged female from different countries and different jobs to edit Wikipedia.

Contribute experience

One of the reason causing decrease number and single "geeky" type of contributors is the difficult in usage of Wikipedia editor, and complicated rules to contribute. New edit tends to be deleted or rollback, if people didn't aware of the reference policy of Wikipedia. The Wikipedian discuss many possible ways to fixing that, including a new WYSIWYG editor, new tutorial system and an improved disclosure procedure of edit. The main target is to lower the difficulties, then gain the contributors and engage more diversity in contributors.

Meet the Mozillians 2013 HK

Our Hong Kong community (which is currently organized by Sammy Fung) host a "Meet the Mozillians 2013 HK" meetup during the event at Friday night. Totally 11 people joined the meetup, including local community members Fubuki Hoshino, Wan Leung Wong, Amanda Lam, Sammy and several others, foreign Mozillians including Arky, Orin, me, and Oarabile (member of Mozilla Botswana). We'd discussion several things during the whole 3 hours meeting.

The topics including, - Hong Kong community conditions. They're just settle up, and the contributors were large shared with current FLOSS communities like HKLUG, OSHK. Also the website is under construction. - Recruitment, we shared some of the recruit resource including the SNS channel at the right hand side of Firefox download landing page, and snippet at the front-page (default search page).

There are also several different meetups scheduled in Hong Kong during this period, such as Creative Commons meeting (there are several Taiwanese CC members who were going to participate in their own meeting, thus they can also join Wikimania for some free time.)

I feels that it's really a good chance to organize the small/medium size inter-countries event during a large conference. Since the people from everywhere already gathered for the conference I also suggest we may plan to prepare have some meetup near next year's Wikimania (in London).

I'd just joined >MozCamp Asia 2012 in Singapore (Nov 16~18), and had a session Events of Taiwan community: challenges, evolutions, and survivals in 2012, here is the slide and my speaking draft. I hope that our experience could make some help to my beloved Mozilla worldwide community.

MozTW Brief intro

In the beginning, I'm going to give a brief intro of Mozilla Taiwan community. Established in 2004, making contribution by maintaining product localization and & localized product sites, MozTW turned out to be a project-oriented community: including online/offline marketing campaigns, evangelism talks, localizations, and contribution in different Mozilla projects.

The challenges of MozTW: From my point of view

Before I start of the challenge part, I'm going to make a DISCLAIMER: Ideas below may or may not representing other MozTW member's idea. This is what I observed from my own contributing experience, others might not think it's a big problem, or the problem might not exist at all.

Community age problem

As time passes, if a community doesn't grow with enough younger participation, the average age of community contributors becomes older. Also you'll find out you have no that much time after graduated, and the same situation happened across all the active folks of your community. Many of the communities are formed by a herd of college students, so you can foresee such a problem in 4~5 years if the community were newly burned in your region.

Market Changes

I feel that the change of the browser market / OSS environment makes us harder to recruit these days. When we begin, there are only several browsers in the market, Firefox represents innovation and creativity, it's a little rebel and hacks culture, it's cool. At that time when a people wanted to join some internet interesting group and contribute in a non-programming field, you don't have so many OSS/software communities choices like today. This day there are other browsers which thinks to be cooler than the old fox across techies, the opportunity to contribute, with the spirit of the social action are much more.

Take events for example, 5 years before, there were not so many events for geeks like our Firefox Party in Taiwan, I think it's easier to gather hundreds of attendees and have much attention to our campaigns, but it's much harder today. Taiwan has population about 20 millions, and In this year we have more than 10 houndries attendee conferences, subjetive on OSS and web. The growth of internet and globalization OSS projects also have some effect, one can easily find events, communities, reach and contribute remotely to non-local project. I think it's make us harder on our recruition today.

The "Official Mozilla" problem

We now face challenges from new "official" player on Firefox marketing / representative, and I expect company is going to grow its new community in the marketing strategy.

Mozilla office in Taipei was established last year right after MozCamp, before that, we had discussed some of the problems we may face across core contributors of Taiwan. In this year, I have seen many things we were worried at that time, which I don't really want to see, resulting in much more challenges. Which may happened again, if Mozilla is opening new office, then we may want to avoid them.

1. You're no longer the "Mozilla representative"

MozTW was the de facto "Mozilla representative" before. After the local company opens, when people want to contact Mozilla, they'll directly contact the company, and since it's related to end-use marketing, if the information doesn't been bounced to community, which means much less co-operation opportunities and much less eyes attracted on community.

And there is a branding problem, if your community use "Mozilla-country" as your name, you may have to prepare for the naming transition, for that this is the offices' formal name. In fact, we don't really have the choice deal with this situation, this problem had been foreseen by BobChao, our previous community liaison many years ago, so we'd used MozTW and Mozilla Taiwan Community bi-branding for years. But when we actually deal with the situation today, it's still hard to come out with a good enough branding strategy, weather to promote the "Mozilla Taiwan Community" on our events? Or to use "Mozilla Community" only? Or using "MozTW" preventing distinguish to "Mozilla Taiwan", the official name of office?

As my own observing, people just couldn't understand. In fact, they don't find there is several Mozilla depart at all.

2. You're losing your volunteer while the company recruit

Once the office is open, you may find out your hardly-working community guru to be hired, and they had much less time contribute to community projects. The better they had done before, the harmful it would be. In conjunction with the age's problem of community and recruitment problem, it'll became hardest challange you'd like to deal with.

It's true that the problem will naturally begin to exist as the time pass, whether the offices open or not. Community always lose core contributors as they graduate from school and if they are not luckily enough to find the job which can have enough leisure time to contribute, but I was hoping it may be difference when it comes to Mozilla. It's seems that it's my too idealistic wishes when our community contributors joined the local office.

3. You'll see competing campaign/sites/community appear

While the local company doing end-user promotions, as time passed, many events/campaigns rolled out one by one. You'll begin to see the competing projects to what your community were doing unavoidable.

From online campaigns such as facebook pages to offline events such as workshops and speeches, I'm frustrated for that with the full time employees, engineers and budget supplement, their campaign seems eventually more successful than what communities did. <- their campaign would be probably more successful than what communities did. ??

We used to translate news from Mozilla and Mozillian's blogs to a Trad. Chinese Mozilla Links, since it's a community volunteer project, we could not control the effectiveness but quality. Nowadays, when local office can publish the "latest" news in synchronize with Mozilla Press blog, that's the efficiency we can never achieve ever. How could our campaign compete with the company's similar one, for that you can only exchange your sleeping time while they're working on a daily basis? It turned to be no choice but to give up translating and spreading the news, also on many campaigns which local office may be interested in, and choose what they're not.

Websites

Second is about websites. After the local company opened their site, your community portal are no longer the second Mozilla sites anymore. Users will see 1) localized mozilla.org, 2) local office's mozilla.com.country and 3) community's site. All 3 different sites are shared with similar contents and same propose - to spreading information about Mozilla, and the same action - to provide Firefox download. If one user could found that there are more than one site exist, he'll be frustrated with them no doubt. I think most of the users don't really figure out there are.

Even further, one day you may surprisingly found that mozilla.org been redirected to local office's website, instead of the normal localized mozilla.org in your language. It has not happened on zh-TW yet, and I'll never eager to see it happened. Why bother to do so when l10n contributors are taking good care of mozilla.org, when it comes to One Mozilla conception?

Anything more to expect? Has your community ever built a forum? What if you found that one similar section appear at local official site? What would the originnal forum users thought? That's the best negative message from "One Mozilla" that we could convinced our users regionally.

Community

With the local company's some kinds of campaign begin, you may expect the other "more official" community begin to exist, while they started recruit volunteer/students. The worse thing is that you're still facing the recruit problem we mentioned before, and you may have to keep thinking "how to recruit new contributors on community's projects, from our already recruited local office's contributors." How weird is it.

It turns to be the original community are not the only Mozilla community anymore, although it was, it's not, maybe for some employees POV.

How about from the One-Mozilla POV?, the overall community is growing while your formal community weakening on behavior of above problems. It's true that our own community may not include all of the Mozillians in our region, and an alternative communities may have been running more systematically with the direct instructions from local company, and the overall perceptions of Mozilla and Firefox to audience may increasingly. But for me, the problems are more emotional than rationally.

I couldn't questioned my believed methods to making Mozilla stronger. For the love of my community of which I begin to contributed, for the different expectation from Mozilla manifesto I believed in - "the trust of our transparent community-based processes, and the way we use to build communities that support the Manifesto's principles. To saw a community been weakening from above problems, I found that I couldn't be as proud to mention the openness and our community approach as I was before.

The evolutions and survivals of MozTW

Next is the quick review of evolution and survival of MozTW this year

Offline events of 2012

In 2012, we had several offline events, such as a co-hosting Firefox-Ubuntu party in April, and Webmaker Pop-up party running joinly with local Mozilla office.

We kept running weekly MozTW Lab Cafe and Gathering routined meetings continuously, for community members to gather and share with each other. It seems more people are attending regularly this year.

The campaign of browser pairs game

And about online events, besides regularly updating of the our portal site, our main brick-and-click campaign this year is "Browser Pairs Game" as mentioned in the earlier session by the author WM and littlebtc. We promoted Firefox for Android, the responsive design of our community sites our mascot Foxmosa and HTML5 all in one single joyful game campaign, not forgot to mention how happy to see the audience react, when they found the unique design of the game. I could not forget to thanks for the Firefox Mobile marketing team on supporting the campaign.

And We're planning to keep running the campaign, also roll-out more games to promoting the mascot and the delight of HTML5, and have more fun this year.

The l10n challenges

Due to the challenges I'd mention above, I believed we have to avoid doing things which the local office began to work on, that is, we have to decreasing the translation of blog article and building l10n product sites, divert our attention to other fields. One of the approach we tried is the video subtitle translation with Amara. After finish several short videos such as "A Different Kinds of Browser", "The Mozilla Story" and "Looking Ahead", we challenged to hosting a 2-day workshop translating "Code Rush".

With the total attendance of about 20 contributors, and several days of over-night working on adjusting the subtitles, and with the gracefully supporting from Tara Hernandez with her video clip, the screening of <Code Rush> at local cinema with hundreds of attendees on Soft Freedom Day turned out to be the most success events of this year.

From passive to active recruit, try to target the different audience

In the past, most of the core contributors of MozTW are recruited from workshops and events such as school tour. But it costs to prepare the event and contents, and it's hard if we don't have someone at desired schools to help. Also the opportunity of arranging the speech at schools are more difficult these years. Consider the costs to recruit of each contributors, it seems not a good way for us to perform.

We do have a contribute page on our website, but it's not working well, not many people join us with that page (I can't even remember any), it's obviously we need to be more active on recruit.

We tried recruit new contributors at several offline events, we prepared a questionnaire with the option to choose from website, l10n, arts, campaign planning and programming, trying to target the different contribution field of portential contributors. Then we could point the appropriately project for them to begin. It's kinds of offline version of "What can I do for Mozilla".

We had not focused on programming before, this year we began to recruit students to try the good first bug, with the help from Thomasy, (whom is Mozilla rep) and Kenny (The web specification guru), and we had several success cases on that.

Another trial I performed last month is set a booth on an Donjinji event (which named comikon at many country, the spare-time comic-er exhibition), displaying illustrates of Foxmosa and Browser Pairs game, try to recruit voluntary illustrators, I indeed got many attendees sign-up for more information, but not getting active contributors yet. But just like recruit programming students at OSS conference, I think to target the specific audience is one of the possible solution to decrease the difficult of recruition.

The 2012 of MozTW and me

We may faced many challenges and decisions made to try hard on evolution, at least, we survive and I'm standing here to share our experience with all of you. It may be a hard year for me to try, and to explore to be a competent community liaison, but it seems we still alived good, maybe we're doing better than I wonder?

What I dream of…

When I reading the Mozilla Manifesto, and when I watching "the different kinds of browser",
I dreaming a community that full of people toward the same goal:
working together to growing the web to a better place,
to bringing the awareness of important things we value high,
and to helping users browsing happily, social with their friends and to realizing their dreams online.
and I know, in the mean time, we're also growing ourselves.

I dreaming that while I give up my sleep time, translating the latest news of Mozilla,
some other contributors are working at the other side of the planets Earth,
Whom I have not met, but I can see them on IRC, on mailing list,
and I can hear them arguing for some most important decisions we had to make,
according to our core values, and to our users' best.

I dreaming that I can be sure when I was tired,
community will still exist for long,
my friends will still happily contributing to the projects,
and I know the cooperation will be our strongest support for now and ever.

I can dreaming that when I leave,
the Internet will be a more friendly place, and the world must be better,
even though we only improve it once a small bit...
That I can proudly to said I was in the project, and I'm the lifetime Mozillian.

For all the dreams of mine, giving my sleeping time and my life,
keep think and try to find the solutions, of all the problems and challenges above,
try every hard to keep community exists, alive and growing,
then maybe I can be here next year once more time,
and to share our successful experience with all you my friends here.

MozTW @ Comic Nova 2 原創作品交流展設攤心得

今天以 MozTW 的名義到 Comic Nova 2 原創作品交流展擺攤招募新繪師 [1]，以下活動報告。

現場玩瀏覽器翻牌遊戲過關送 Foxmosa 胸章，總共發了 30 個；原本這個活動在 COSCUP 執行時的設計是，參加者要用自己的手機下載 Android 版 Firefox 然後再玩翻牌。由於現場狀況，直接改為玩我帶去的 iPad。

（瀏覽器翻牌昨天由 Thomasy 改版之後增加總分功能了，我最高有 6x 分，快來挑戰吧！）

剛剛查了一下流量，透過社群網站分享訊息導入，今天 MozTW 網站翻牌遊戲的流量大概有 COSCUP 時期的一半、是平常的五倍。

人力招募的成果，有 12 人填寫人力資料（Bob：你們的校園大使跟電子報又有進帳了，你看看多好！），下週我會抽空把美術方面的計畫簡略整理，然後寄信給曾在這兩個活動裡填寫過資料的朋友 [2]，希望最後能有人到社群來貢獻。

一整天下來的心得是，以推廣 Firefox 跟招募志工來說，原創場還蠻適合的。一整天攤位都有人來逛、幾乎沒有停過，我聊到喉嚨快沒聲音了。（當然還是得感謝電腦君在同人誌圈長久經營、加上翻牌遊戲跟瀏覽器物語的梗，我們才能第一次設攤就上手）

但是考慮一開始參加活動的目標「招募繪師」的話，今天一到現場就發現問題：我們想要招募繪師、繪師都在擺攤、逛攤位的都不是繪師（華生，你抓到盲點了 Orz）。所以，下次要準備好傳單，到各攤位上直接發送介紹，效果應該會更好。

參加活動的總成本是攤位報名費 427 元，攤位器材要感謝 MGDesigner 跟波卡出借姓沛的一整天，我帶去的電腦完全派不上用場 XD

最後分享給大家一個超屌的社團：UAV 實驗室 Comic Nova 2 參加心得，因為顧攤的苦主穿的 T-shirt 背後有 Chrome，所以殺過去一探究竟，沒想到居然是玩 UAC 無人飛行機的社團！而且不但有造飛機、還有出漫畫！

Going no where after Mozilla's desicion of drop Firefox Home out of iOS AppStore

I'm really sad and feel bad on received the above message about Mozilla's decision to take Firefox Home down off AppStore. Firefox Home is the only and still working Mozilla product on iOS, it was release at 2010, the only feature is syncing bookmarks and tabs with Firefox (through Firefox Sync). The last version is 1.1.1, release at Feb 2011, and it still has 100k active users according to earlier letter from mozillian.org. After that the development is stop, but it's still downloadable until earlier today.

We can leave it and fade it out of our sight as time pass, for that it's not that kind of successful product, but I don't think it's reasonable to remove it off AppStore. Not because I'm one of the currently 100k users, neither I'd like to keep it as a prove of that Mozilla first came out of "Syncing across the desktop and mobile device", but take consider of our mission, it's not a ideal decision.

I just don't know why can't finish an alternative product first, than kill the old one? I didn't ask for putting any of our limiting developing resource on this old product, but why bother to remove it, if it still working fine across iOS6?

It’s not good of that the decision stands of Mozilla just leave the user of iOS behind. I understand that we have put our full power on Firefox for Android and Firefox OS, but saying “You could wait for our next product, we’re making something but not done yet. In the mean time, we just leave you behind” to some of our customer just make me sad and feel not fulfill Mozilla's Mission.

Leave it at AppStore and let someone who really need to find do no harm to Mozilla, and it fill in our principle and value - "Provide Choice". Even the choice is not pretty good, it’s a choice through.

We can done it in a better way: just leave it there at AppStore, provide a chance for community to maintain the project just like SeaMonkey, maybe find a way for contributor to release and uploading the result to AppStore is enough. We'd really limit resource on our own, but I believe that our global community can definitely help.

Until the day we release a better product on iOS, than we can all happily to take it off the AppStore, leave it into our memory.

PS. Firefox Home's clip "Get Up and Go" is still the best ads of Mozilla ever after 2 years.

Firefox + Ubuntu 12[.04] Release Party in Taiwan

It's been a year after last party, it's time to celebrate the release of Firefox again! This time, we got companion with our friends from Ubuntu-TW community to celebrate the Firefox 12 and Ubuntu 12.04 together, we call it Firefox Ubuntu 12(.04) Release Party.

Since the first Firefox release party in Taiwan (we also set that day, Oct 21, 2004 as community's birthday), It's a tradition that Mozilla Taiwan Community (MozTW) to hold release parties celebrating major Firefox release yearly. All community contributors were working hard preparing for the parties, we got much feedback, recruited many active contributors on events, and the numbers of attendees jump over milestone every time.

The party were on May 27, there're 85 attendees (that's full capability of the venue space!) including about 15 active community members of MozTW and about the same from Ubuntu-TW. We hold the party in Taichung, city in the center of Taiwan, and the attendees were from everywhere across the island.

The session were presented by both communities member in a wide range of subjects include open-source softwares as music, 3D modeling, perl coding and Mozilla-related subjects, including what's new on recent Firefox release by student reps Orinx, Hackasaurus + Webmaker by xatierlikeLee, SUMO by Ernest, B2G by Bob Chao and the insight development story about the popular html5 demo game Browser Pairs by WM. We have put the video recording of the party on the Youtube playlist below, and put all slides on the event page.

Users of Ubuntu Linux often use Firefox as their default browser, and we hope the sessions in this party would let them know more about Mozilla, also the Firefox lovers in the event could came across Ubuntu and broaden out their OSS experience. To achieve the purpose, we arranged a serie of subjects such as Browser Pairs game, followed by a musician on Linux (who composed the music in game). I gave a lightning talk on brief intro of all projects of Mozilla, engaging people reaching Mozilla in different ways beside Firefox.

(In my own perception, we didn't fully achieved on the objective of get Firefox users know Ubuntu, due to lack of some basic intro of Ubuntu and Linux. Next time I'll work more on sessions with other communities in the join-held events.)

I would thank for several contributers' helping, especially RJ for preparing the whole event with me. There're also Reps BobChao and petercpg participated in the event as staff and speaker.

We'd got partial budget sponsorship from local Mozilla Taiwan, and swags from Reps program and Canonical. Every participants got a full bag of stamps, badge, memo and Ubuntu CDs. We also had a happy present lottery of Firefox T-shirts, laptop skins, mugs and Ubuntu book in the end of event, with an especially designed slot machine web app by Yao Wei (Released under CC0).

MozTW 首頁的各種面貌

隨著 Firefox 4 的上市，這次 MozTW (Mozilla Taiwan) 的首頁有了一些新的設計，成果目前已經上線；在上週日的 Firefox 4 Party 上半場的小科展中，藉由插花小B 的攤位，我也有小小的展示了一下 MozTW 首頁的各種樣貌。

這次的主要工程有兩項：隨作業系統而提供不同的內容、因應行動裝置的螢幕尺寸提供行動版面。

隨 OS 呈現不同內容

最早 Piaip 所製作的 MozTW 網站首頁，早已有偵測透過瀏覽器 User Agent 偵測作業系統的機制，首頁的下載框中，使用者所用的平台會高亮突起，幫助使用者選擇下載的 Firefox 版本（如下圖），不過這個機制已經壞了好幾年。

在此次更新中，小B 先是修好了平台偵測的 Javascript，接著我們就加上了隨不同平台提供不同內容的設計。主要的區別有兩項：首頁的底圖、及下方第一欄推薦軟體的內容。

偵測的平台有 Windows、Linux、Mac、iOS 及 Android/Maemo 五種，每種平台都有專屬的頁手標頭圖。前三種桌面端平台中，下方第一欄維持原本的 Thunderbird，在 iOS 下此欄推薦的是 Firefox Home，在 Android/Maemo 中則當然推薦新的行動版 Firefox 了。

行動裝置版面

隨著 iPhone 的發售與 Android 的釋出，智慧型手機在這兩年呈現爆炸性的發展，手機上網正式進入普及期，因此我們開始想要針對小螢幕的行動裝置瀏覽 MozTW 的體驗去最佳化。

手機版網頁的製作有兩個方式：第一是做一個完全獨立的專用網站，後端的內容或許是可以維持同一套，但前端的頁面則切割為桌面與手機兩個完全不同的網站，藉由轉址等手段讓行動裝置能瀏覽到專用網頁。好處是在裝置端能有最好的瀏覽效果，壞處則是維護的成本要多出一倍。

另一個方式，則是針對現有的桌面版網站，加掛上各種調整的設定，讓手機瀏覽時得到較佳的效果。好處是維護的成本較低，壞處則有設計上較多限制、相對不靈活、且手機瀏覽下載的頻寬需求與桌面相仿、聯繫成本高、瀏覽速度慢等問題。

MozTW 網站所使用的佈景從 2004 年沿用至今，除了一些諸如 CSS 圓角、頁面寬度的調整以外，一直沒什麼變化。是有點一成不變，不過倒是出現了一個意外的優點—這個佈景是以欄為主的版面，最上方是 Banner、中間有主要產品欄、接著有三個項目並排、再下方則是最新消息與快速捷徑，最下面則是版權資訊等，全部合計有八個欄位。

因為每個資訊都容納在獨立的欄位中（以 DIV 包裹），而欄位間的功用及區隔也很明確，因此我們可以很直截了當的，順應行動裝置的小螢幕、長螢幕來調整各欄位置，當然最簡單的方法就是由上到下各個欄位排成一直排。

經過兩個禮拜的施工，CQD 完成了 MozTW 首頁的行動版型，並透過 CSS Media Query，針對 500px 寬度以下的裝置上加掛上行動版型 CSS，以達到自動切換版面的效果。

行動版型中，除內容各欄的排列外，正中央主要產品欄的主圖與最上方 Banner 上的導覽按鈕也透過 CSS 調整大小與排列。此外，在 iOS 及 Android/Maemo 等行動裝置上，提供桌面版 Firefox 4 的安裝檔下載是無用、不合理、且容易讓一般用戶混淆的事，因此我們也直接把「下載 Firefox 4」框框隱藏起來了。

成果

經過以上兩步驟的改造之後，我們得到一個 (1) 會根據螢幕大小切換為行動版型或一般版型 (2) 根據瀏覽者的平台不同提供對應資訊的全新首頁。以下是各平台下，開啟 Moztw 首頁的截圖。

其他

這次的更新，還包含了將首頁的圖形式圓角按鈕及欄位圓角，以 CSS3 border-radius 取代，降低下載圖片的需求、增加美觀（同時在 IE6~IE8 下醜化，IE8 以前版本不支援 CSS 圓角XD）。

此次的更新只限於首頁，點擊其他內容後就會跳回原始的全畫面網站。

除了行動版頁面外，對應 Mozilla 的 http://mozilla.con/m，三月底時 CQD 也製作了 http://moztw/m ，作為行動裝置的 Firefox 快速下載頁。

很多人注意到，這次從 Firefox 4 公開，到 MozTW 網站更新完成，有好幾天的落差。更新太慢的原因很簡單，就是人力不足。如果您對 Firefox 有興趣，想要加入 MozTW 社群一同貢獻所長，並且了解 HTML、CSS，或者會使用美工軟體的平面設計，甚或是翻譯、打雜等任何其他技能者，請看參與我們頁面。

稍早不久前（2/2 日），Mozilla 從 Firefox 附加元件網站中，移除了內含 Windows 木馬的擴充套件「Master Filer」。從此事件中，或許有些人會覺得疑慮，Mozilla Firefox 是不是已經不再安全了？我們以較為安全的理由來推廣 Firefox，是不是已經失去其說服力？更甚之：Firefox 的安全神話是否已經破滅？

Firefox 本身的安全性

對我而言，答案是否定的。相較於市面上最普遍的 IE 而言，Firefox 的安全性仍然遠遠超出其之外，也不輸給其餘網路瀏覽器。我的兩點理由如下：

一、較高的漏洞修補率：上個月駭客透過 IE 漏洞入侵 Google 及其餘公司，導致多國政府呼籲改用它種瀏覽器的事件至今仍未落幕；而 Firefox 在 Secunia 公司弱點資料庫的修補率，包含 Firefox 3.0、3.5、3.6 皆為 100%（Opera 10 與 Google Chrome 4 亦同）在此同時，IE6、IE7、IE8 則為 83%、74%、56%。微軟已承認，此次事件中被使用的 IE 漏洞早在去年九月已發現，修補時程卻排到今年二月，此等疏忽令人無法相信。

二、原始碼受大眾檢視：Firefox 的開放原始碼開發模式，使得程式中每一行指令都能公開在陽光底下讓人檢視，漏洞與弱點更容易被發現，沒有一絲容許作惡指令的空間存在。相較於封閉原始碼的 IE 及 Opera 而言，我更相信其安全性。

套件的安全性

Firefox 最大的特色是透過擴充套件，提供各式各樣五花八門的新功能，如此的自由同時也伴隨著極大的風險而來。如果套件作者心存惡意，不但有能力把 Firefox 搞壞、偷得瀏覽器中你的私人資訊、甚至還能直接破壞電腦中的其餘檔案。

這同時也是使用其餘瀏覽器時，最令人擔憂的地方。試想，要是你用 IE 上網（KKman、PCMan 等使用 IE 核心的瀏覽器亦同），到某個你常去的網站，此時跳出「你必須更新瀏覽器元件，才能繼續瀏覽本網站：確定」，你會直接按下確定安裝嗎？這個訊息是真的嗎？其中被偽造的風險有多大？

在套件所帶來的這個問題上，Mozilla 透過了附加元件網站的驗證與人工的審核，來替大家把關。

當套件作者上傳新的套件或者新版本時，Firefox 附加元件網站會自動進行 12 項測試，包含了一般驗證、在地化測試與兩組安全性測試，包含：不安全 JavaScript 測試、不安全設定測試、遠端 JavaScript 測試、常見函式庫 Checksum 測試、標記程式碼片段、Geolocation 檢查、Conduit 工具列檢查等安全性方面的測試。如果套件中夾帶了已知的有害程式碼、或者因為作者的疏忽導致程式有一些已知的不安全問題，在這一步就會被阻擋下來。（測試過程如下圖，詳細的說明在此）

當上傳的檔案通過這些自動測試後，才能完成上傳動作，成為元件網站的「實驗中套件」。您在安裝這些實驗中套件時，都需要先勾選「讓我安裝這個實驗中的套件」，意義即表示：雖然這個套件已經通過自動測試，但是仍未經過人工檢查程式碼；你最好確定套件作者足以信任。

此次被抓到的兩個惡意套件，從 Google 頁面存檔看來（一、二），就都還是實驗中套件。雖然它們躲過了自動檢查程式，而上到 Firefox 元件網站，但這個檢查程序的弱點，附加元件網站已經完成修正，提昇掃描的能力，也針對網站上的所有套件重新進行了完整測試。

在 Firefox 3.5 新增的附加元件管理員中，可以直接搜索套件並安裝，但無法搜索到實驗中套件，理由也一樣，能避免使用者不慎安裝到可能有問題的套件。

當「實驗中套件」要提昇為正式套件時，套件作者必需先提出申請，接著會有審核者人工檢查其程式碼，確認是否符合公開的條件，包含：已經實驗一段時間、有得到使用者的意見回應、程式碼中無惡意或間諜程式、套件功能不違法、不涉及色情……等（詳細審核項目說明），當審核者確定套件的確是無害且安全無虞的，才會批准其申請，而這個過程每次上傳新版時，都要重新進行一遍。

我個人寫的套件 PlacesCleaner 收藏庫清潔工，第一版從申請到成為正式套件大概花了兩個月，最近幾個更新也都需時一兩個禮拜，每次的審核者都有所不同，也同時確保了審核的品質。

因此，我敢如此說明：如果你從 Firefox 附加元件網站或附加元件管理員中安裝（非實驗中）套件，都是安全無虞的，也不會有遇到此次這種惡意套件的機會。除非你是從其他網站（論壇、套件作者個人網站）手動下載並安裝套件，才會有危險性。我認為這種從非官方網站安裝套件的動作，能免則免！

瀏覽器元件安全性

Firefox 3.6 中新增了一項功能，在更新時會檢查常見的瀏覽器元件（Plugin）版本，包含了 Flash、QuickTime、Silverlight、Java……等常見元件。如果所使用的版本過舊，檢查頁會顯示出來，建議你下載更新。這些 Plugin 為非 Mozilla 的其他廠商所寫，雖能增添 Firefox 的影音支援等功能，但也常常包含了不少安全性漏洞與錯誤，有時也會造成 Firefox 的當機等問題。例如 Flash 9 釋出至今三年多，也已修正了數十個漏洞，因此隨時保持 Plugin 更新，也是維持上網安全重要的一環。（前往 Firefox Plugin Check 頁面）

結論

針對此次 Firefox 有害套件事件，我所提出的建議是：使用 Firefox 本身的附加元件管理員，或者在 Firefox 附加元件網站安裝套件；除非您信任該作者，否則請不要輕易安裝實驗中套件；除了 Firefox 附加元件網站及管理員外，不要透過任何其餘網站手動下載並安裝套件（包含 MozTW 的論壇），如此即可享受各式各樣 Firefox 套件的功能，同時將擴充套件伴隨的風險降到最低。

下載與安裝 Firefox 時，請認明 Mozilla 官方網站、MozTW 或抓火狐網站。除非確認安全，請避免使用各式非官方版的 Firefox。雖然我們推薦大家升級到最新的 Firefox 3.6，Mozilla 仍會持續提供 Firefox 3.5 及 3.0 的安全性更新。Firefox 3.0 以下版本已經進入停止支援狀態，請儘速升級到 3.0 以上版本。

使用者上網瀏覽時的安全性，是 Mozilla 最重視的一環（另一環是開放標準）。每次 Firefox 的更新都會針對安全性進行提昇：Firefox 2.0 的詐騙網站偵測、3.0 的「海關男」網站識別資訊、3.5 的隱私瀏覽模式、3.6 的過期 Plugin 偵測等，在在都強化了安全性並提昇隱私保護。

針對 Firefox 本身的漏洞與弱點，Mozilla 公司與全球的程式設計師，都會在發現的第一時間儘速修補、並釋出安全性更新。因此我敢以 Mozilla 全球社群的一份子、MozTW (Mozilla Taiwan) 成員、Firefox 擁護者及開源軟體愛好者的身份向您保證：使用 Firefox 上網的安全性，仍是毋庸置疑的！

職業總工會網路課程回顧

過了一個多月，現在來回顧一下去年 (2008) 年底忙了兩個月事：高雄市職業總工會網路教學課程。

這個課程源自於高雄市職業總工會的郭先生，郭先生先是聯絡 Mozilla Taiwan 的柏強提出構想，想開一堂 Firefox 辦公室應用的課程，後來由身在南部的我跟 Toomore 承接下來。

原始構想雖然是 Firefox 辦公室應用課程，但是一堂課 3 小時，整個課程總共 16 堂課，我們想了過來又想了過去，不知道對職業公會的學員們怎麼講 Firefox 講到 48 小時……因此就變成這樣的課程了：從最簡單的上網申請帳號開始，以各式各樣的網路應用為主，自由軟體為輔的一堂課。

我們對課程的想法是，要讓原先已經會打開電腦、打字、使用 IE 的學員，能了解像我們這樣（7 年級，大概是學員小孩年紀）的年輕人，在網路上都在玩些什麼，至少讓學員知道網路能做的事，並且在生活上多少用得上。

值得一提的是，因為上課時大概都能有兩到三位朋友到場（曾經參加的有 wini、凍人翔、Toomore 女朋友），因此除主講者外，學員在操作時，都能有人從旁協助，讓課程順利不少。

下面就是 9/15 到 11/10 實際講授的課程，包含課程講義跟投影片，都放在 Google Docs 跟 Slideshare 與大家分享。

第 1 堂 9/15

概觀：網路與自由軟體

第一堂課是大綱介紹，先讓學員了解系列課程中會學到的東西，並且知道一些自由軟體跟 Web 2.0 的概念。因為接下來的課程會使用到 Google 的各種服務，因此也 Step-by-step 教大家申請 Google 帳號。這堂課遇到遇到最大的困難是申請帳號時的 Captcha 實在很難辨識，因此整個申請的過程一個多小時才完成。

因為是 Moztw 成員主持的課程，第二堂課當然就是瀏覽器跟 Firefox 的教學啦！因為課程借用高雄中正高工的電腦教室，設備真的有點糟，整個課程中學員用 IE 時常常都會發生靈異現象，因此先講也能讓學員在接下來的課程中有個比較跟得上時代的工具，以便順利進行。

系列課程中有幾堂課，因為我的時間關係來不及作投影片，這堂就是其中之一。第三堂課講的是網路最基本的應用 email。學員跟我們想像的一樣，都只知道 yahoo 的 email，因此課程著重在 gmail 的優點跟 gmail 內建的 gtalk 上。本堂課讓學員互相寄信、使用 gtalk 傳訊，是很有效果的實作之一。此外課程中展示了一下 twitter，雖然我認為 twitter 很適合學員與講師間的意見交流，想讓大家實際使用，但是有鑑於申請 Google 帳號時的困難、跟時間不夠，因此只作展示。新酷音輸入法也是只展示沒有讓大家實際安裝。

這兩堂課由 Toomore 講授。大家家中都有數位相機，也會按快門拍照，但是會把相片存入電腦、管理、然後上傳到網路相簿的人就很少了。因此這兩堂課要讓學員透過操作簡單的 Picasa 跟 Picasa Web Album 進行相片管理跟使用網路相簿。我對課程的原始構想是，要求大家攜帶相機、連接線或記憶卡來，第一堂課讓學員使用 Picasa 把相機中的相片讀入電腦，並學習整理與後置相片，第二堂課讓學員透過 Picasa 的同步功能直接把相片放上 Picasa Web Album。

實際進行的狀況是，Toomore 把兩堂課的順序倒過來教，先講網路相簿、再講 Picasa，結果在第一堂課就遇到許多問題。雖然 Toomore 做了兩份很詳細的講義，但是對學員來說，光是把相機接上電腦，將相機或讀卡機（我們準備了三台還是不夠）中的相片抓到桌面的資料夾，就觸礁了。因此每一步都得 Step-by-step 來進行。對於我們來說很簡單基本的檔案複製貼上、透過網頁介面上傳等動作，對於學員都極為困難。

如同我原始的想法，第二堂課時，我們教導學員使用 Picasa 匯入相機中的相片，進行後置、上傳跟 email 寄出（這個功能對學員來說很實用，雖然我們很少使用），整個流程跟學習效果，相較於第一堂課都好多了。驗證了我的看法：不必讓學員知道像 Picasa 這樣 UI 包裝很完美的軟體背後的流程與原理，只要知道怎麼使用能達到目的就好（同樣的概念也可以放在 iPhoto 上）。

搜索引擎、維基百科

這堂課的投影片內容放在介紹搜索引擎、入口網站跟 Google 的發展，而第二個主題是維基百科。因為時間不夠，維基百科延到了下堂課的才講，提到了一些開放與協作的網路文化。此堂課課程中講到講義跟投影片沒有的 SEO 跟關鍵字廣告等內容。因為有好幾個學員開公司，因此對關鍵字廣告、Adwords 很有興趣，多花了一小時在講解跟展示。可見 Yahoo 的關鍵字廣告行銷深入一般民眾有多成功。搜索引擎的使用方面則是介紹 Google 完全手冊中的內容，如翻譯跟匯率、計算機等工具。

這兩堂課也是系列課程，主題是 Blog。第一堂課的目標是讓學員申請一個 Blogger 部落格，並且在 Blogger 上發佈一篇純文字的文章。第二堂課則包含一篇內嵌 aNobii 的書介與一篇內嵌 Picasa Web Album 相片的文章。整堂課從申請 aNobii 開始，輸入一本自己帶來的書，並且內嵌進 Blogger 文章中。Picasa Web Album 的相片內嵌進 blog 也是相同的作法。我想教大家寫文章、書介跟相片應該足夠了。此外有展示文章內嵌影片等。

其實相簿跟 Blog 這兩堂課，我很想教 Pixnet，但是有鑑於使用 Google 帳號跟使用 Picasa，因此只好忍痛放棄了

RSS、Blog、公民新聞

上堂課跟這堂課剛好碰上野草莓運動，因此除了講 RSS 以外，順勢也講了些公民新聞的概念。實際的應用方面則是使用 Google Reader 訂閱 Blog、報紙網站、雜誌網站。課程後半講解公民新聞、包含一些媒體識讀的概念，也讓大家看了全球之聲、Peopo 與 funp 新聞通等平台。

這堂課讓學員使用 Pcman 上 Ptt，重點放在 BBS 的訊息流通迅速上，讓學員搜索八卦板的時事（剛好有新聞從八卦板爆出）。網路論壇以 Mobile 01 為例，強調論壇的分享跟生活資訊。

網路音樂
KKBox、Indievox、iTunes

「網路音樂」是應學員要求才講的課程。雖然我想他們比較想知道的是怎麼上網抓歌，但是還是講了 KKBox 跟 indievox 兩種線上音樂服務，一種是租借、一種是購買。台灣市場剛好缺少流行音樂付費下載的網站，因此只能以 indievox 為例。受限於教室電腦沒有光碟機，所以只有展示 iTunes 的使用，其實應該要讓大家帶 CD 來，試試把歌存進電腦的方法才對。

這堂課由 Toomore 講授，內容包含 Google Maps 的使用跟「建立我的地圖」功能。對學員來說，看地圖比建立地圖有趣多了，重點應該可以放在 Google Maps 的操作跟地理資訊，例如網友分享的捷運資訊……等資訊的使用面會比較有趣。

這堂課講了些網路詐騙、網路隱私、防止木馬跟病毒的概念。有學員提到這堂課應該在課程的最初就講，想想也對。

在課程的最後，我們回到軟體自由的主題上，再次談到自由軟體的意義與價值、資訊落差的概念。展示 Ubuntu 8.10、Open Office 等自由軟體的例子。這堂課發了 Ubuntu 8.10 跟教育部的 Ez Go 6 自由軟體應用推廣 DVD。以很短的時間介紹 Ubuntu，讓學員知道電腦上不是只有 XP 或 Vista。

Firefox 3 下載日、Mozilla Links 、火狐鬥陣遊台灣徵人中

下載新火狐，手滑創紀錄的下載日結束了，目前 Firefox 3 全球下載次數已經超過 826 萬次，這個數字代表了，這一整天內，每秒鐘都有將近一百個人在下載安裝 Firefox 3，在推廣了這麼久之後，Firefox 能有這種成就，真是讓人非常興奮。

台灣最後正巧超過七萬的下載數，雖然比不過人多勢眾的中國，但是也超越了南韓，很爽。以台灣的人口數來說，每三百人僅有一個人在用 Firefox 3。這樣說起來雖然不多，但是根據我自己幾個網站 Google Analytic 得到的數據，其實 Firefox 在台灣大概有 10% 以上的市佔率了。經過今天，應該也再提昇了一些。

正體中文 Firefox 的基地是 Moztw，最近花了不少時間投入翻譯工作的 Mozilla Links 正體中文板則是 Moztw 相關事業中最多即時報導、新消息的新聞 Blog，想要更加了解 Firefox，這是必看之站。下面推薦兩篇最近翻譯的文章：

Firefox 2 上市時我們在台北信義誠品辦了一個人多到滿出來的歡樂火狐大轟趴 2.0，3.0 有沒有呢？有、有、當然有，只是還在籌劃中……剛好卡到期末的時間，Moztw 人力實在很不足。有興趣幫任何忙的朋友歡迎到 Moztw-party group 來喊聲報名。

最後廣告一下：由我主辦的「火狐鬥陣遊台灣」，將會在七月出巡全台，同樣徵求台灣各地有志之士參加。本活動以歡樂為最高指導原則，我們要邊快樂的玩、邊向全世界狐迷們介紹台灣。這是活動計畫、這是徵人頁面，有興趣者請直接修改協調頁面內容即可。

現在，我以最誠摯的心邀請各位參與綠黨未來的活動。您想要入黨也好，不想入黨只是當個綠黨之友也可，我們都有好多事情，需要更多的朋友一起合作。譬如：我一直想開發兩個課程，一個是針對推廣自行車通勤的自行車課程、一個是推廣自由軟體運用的課程

最爽的是，看到自己做的傳單一張張發出去（雖然印的是黑白的）
