BIMARE Project-14

Those who visit our site from time to time will know we started to work on a new 14 foot. Project-14.

The new "f14" is aimed to replace fat, heavy and slow boats presently used by many clubs to initiate children to start sailing multihulls. This new design is intended also for advanced youngsters and for general recreational use.

However our new 14 will in every inch be a BIMARE product, highlighting BIMARE's distinctive touch to stand out from similar products of our competitors.

No effort will be spared to make it PRETTY (we Italians like beauty), HGH-TECH (it will feature state state-of-the-art wave piercing hulls with pivoting fully retractable centerboards instead of old fashion heel shapped underbodies of most others), LIGHTER (composite construction instead of rotomoulded polyethylene), FAST and CHEAP.

While working on this project we got an idea!

Why do not utilize these high performance hulls to make a racing 14 ft singlehandler, a smaller duplicate of the A-cat? we noted that nobody sells a singlehandler suited to helmsmen weighing under 60 kg or, more in general, to those who are intimidated by the power made available by A-class catamarans.

In dighny classes the Laser and Open Bic offers the possibility to the young sailors to race at the utmost level until they are grown up to master the Finn. We would like to have the same possibilities for young multihull sailors. Therefore we want to fit the new "14" with all the GO FAST features; carbon mast, curved boards, high-tech sails etc and make it a real "race horse" and not only a pale imitation of the A-class.

We would like to develop this idea with you all. Discuss and find an agreement on the main design parameters. Width, mast height, sail area, construction materials, minimum weight, etc. We also launch a contest to select the appropriate name for this new toy.

We would also love to hear your opinios on whether to start a new class open to other designs and drawing a Box-Rule or to offer it as a One-Design.
We dream to see a lot of these boats take part in A-class events, of course with separate starts and rankings.

CSN Interview with Pim Nieuwenhuis: AC45s, Tornado, F18s, 49ers, X40s...

Pim Nieuwenhuis is one experienced sailor, coming from the 49er scene he has a different and unique look to multis. I sailed one at Valle de Bravo in Mexico, it was a mess, really hard for first timers.
No wonder as Pim remarks, lots of 49er guys are onboard the AC45 series. And it is the same reason our best crews in Argentina come from the 29er fleet, of course, they are not going back, but sailing and training other boats is pure gain when sailing or racing a cat.

Pim tell us his experience and tough work with China Team sailing and putting together the AC45, a big bet for all sailors involved in the project, and many other subjects like the F18 and the Olympics (he was 5th with Mitch Booth at Beijing, 2nd at F18 Worlds 2007 and 5th at Balaton helming with Fer Van West.
A complete sailor with lots of high performance and top level experience.

AC45s
CSN- You've been in the AC45s with China team since first event. How was the experience on sailing them for the first time?
Pim Niewenhuis: The 45's are great machines. The wing is a cool feature, and straight-line sailing it is a very smooth ride. Its amazing what they put together in such a short time and it all seems to hold together pretty well.That said they are not very "user" friendly in terms of boathandling, the spine combined with a lot of lines running diagonally over the tramp makes for a complicated working area.. the lack of a dedicated winch for the gennakerhalyard and sailing 5 up causes a few logistical issues.. But then again, it are supposed to be the best sailors sailing them so they should be able to work it out...

- You have previous experience on the X40s, How do you compare them in performance and in error margin to push hard?
PN: Yes I have sailed the 40s quiet a bit in the previous years. Regarding to the above I would qualify the 40 as lot more "user friendly". But the hull design, the rudders which are under the boat instead of stern hang, and other features make the 45 a more high performance boat.
You will be able to push a 45 a lot harder than a 40 specially in the bear aways, but pushing hard means getting punished equally hard when you get it wrong.

We have seen some relatively newcomers to the multihull game doing some really funky things on the 45 just because they didnt know any better and they got away with it. Some of that stuff you would never try on a X40 or any other multihull.

- CT was the first surprise of the circuit in the early races, for ie, it took almost 3 events to others to perform, but the original team with Mitch at the helm was right there at Cascais, also leading but losing on a handling error. I read rumours that you guys were doing the logistics work also and that affected your performance, as it was drecreasing with the races instead of peaking.
PN:Yeah, we surprised a few people during the early trials in NZL, taking the boat out of the container painting it, rigging it and sailing within a week, with only the sailing team and 2 Leathermans* and performing against Oracle and ETNZ.
(* + a bit of help from acrm's toolkit, I have to say)

Cascais was a late arrival for us, the team was present in Lisbon, but the boat wasn't released which meant we couldn't start rigging and training. But also in Cascais we had some glimpses of performance, but you are right, as a sailing team we were pretty much running the whole show, which eventually doesn't help performing on the water.

- So you were performing out of the box and without training , did these external sailing factors (working as shore crew etc) prevent better results?
Hard to feel pity for yourself and say that it did. But obviously seeing the other teams running around with 20-30 guys, made us look pretty average and for sure that has its effects on the water. But we all believed in the project and all hoped that by time the necessary funds would be found then things would get better. A typical example of maximum input and minimum return, but we were all prepared to take that for a certain period of time because the AC is a dream for a lot of us.

- Did you leave CT? when?
PN:You are correct, i got fired by email the other day. That is apparently also the glamour of AC racing..

- Any chance for them to build a AC72?
PN:I doubt it, China team has until now been unable to secure the necessary funds to race the 45's properly and although they might make people believe that all is good, it isn't. Which is a shame because the country obviously has got a huge potential, the way China Team operates now does a lot of damage to our sport and image in China.

I sure hope and believe China has a great future in the AC and sailing in general, because it deserves to be there, but I am pessimistic about this particular China Team.

- Can the original crew of the AC45 join other team?
PN: There are plenty examples of people changing teams, a couple of "Koreans" spread out. So yeah why not, there are some good multihull sailors looking for positions.

Olympics
You have a wide spread racing experience at top level on 49ers, F18s, M20 and the Olympic Tornado.
- Which was the boat you enjoyed most? and which was the most hard or technical to sail?
PN: Obviously I had my biggest successes in the Tornado, and I enjoyed the technical and development side of it. But to really answer your question (and yes i know this is cursing on catsailingblogspot**) I think the 49er is the most challenging boat to sail. I enjoyed both crewing and helming this boat and i believe it is the 49er which made me the sailor I am now. It doesn't surprise me that there is a lot of 49er sailors on positions in the AC and all around in professional sailing.

**CSN Note: Not that much, in fact I would recommend any sailor willing to improve to sail a 49er/29er and also the H16 solo and overpowered.

- You crew a lot with Mitch Booth , but you are also good skipper (5th last F18 Worlds with Fer Van West) which do you prefer most?
PM: I love sailing, and I love sailing fast boats. I am very competitive and I enjoy both positions. I have had a mentor who has meant a lot to me in the beginning of my sailing career, who always told me I should be a helmsman, but I enjoy both, its really helpful to your crewing if you helm every now and then, and vice versa. It gives a different perspective and you will appreciate each-others position a lot more once you know both roles.Photos left, Tornado & 49er: ISAF

- Do you think girls can crew as hard as men in top level?
PN: Boys and girls have different physique, so you can't compare the 2 as crews. The mixed thing is a mistake if you ask me, but nobody did.- What do you think of the boats for Olympic trials at Santander?
PN: Like i said i don't believe in the mixed idea, and as such don't follow much what is going on in terms of which boats are aiming to become the new Olympic equipment. I just wait and see, ISAF is probably gonna do something unexpected again so everything said about this before their decision is a waste of energy.

F18
- Lots of talks and discussions now on past and current class rules, do you think another situation like 2010 Worlds is possible?
PN: I always have a lot of fun racing the f18's big fleets, and their relative performances are very similar which makes it cool. Less cool is it to drag the thing up the ramp...
The more competitive/professional a class gets, the more is asked from its rules and their management who should (at least try to) be a couple of steps ahead of things.-Future of the class in your view?
PN: The f18 is, and has been a big class, but classes like that do have a lifecycle and maybe we are approaching the end of it? I think people are seeing the carbon 20's, curved boards and stuff like that and they want a part of that instead of sailing the f18 which is not very exotic.

Wings:
- Do you forsee a spread of the wings in the future, or it will only be an option for high end boats?
I watched Herbie´s M20 at the Texel, it and I thought it was pretty cool that someone took it on. They are cool toys and its really interesting but I do believe they will remain for the "happy few" to play with at least for the time being. The rest of us should be happy to just be able to drop their mains and go for a drink!

- Projects: Future and currently working on?
Funnily enough, after quitting China Team I only have mono sailing lined up. I would love to get back up on a hull though!

V1R-2012 A-class

Small changes in hull shape.
New curved daggerboards.

In the pictures you can see the changes we made for 2012.

A small change in the hullshape for the V1R-2012.

We have reduced the volume in the widest central part off the hull at the waterline. This resulted in a straighter and slimmer hull which will give us a better upwind performance.

The slimmer hull also reduces drag and leeward drift. Another advantage is less pitch. The overall result of this change for 2012 will be more speed upwind with less leeward drift and less pitching.

The new 2012 17,0 cm curved daggerboards with a assymetrical profile will also help to reduce leeward drift upwind and create more lift downwind.The daggerboardcase makes it possible to easily adjust the daggerboards.

Ofcourse its possible to use straight daggerboards without any changes in the hull.

The beams for 2012 are profiled and closed at the end. No caps anymore.

The V1R-2012 comes with a new sail made out of DIAX2 TT-RACE (twaron/kevlar) by Brinbridge.

And of course our V1R is made out of 100% carbon.

Bimare zoekt wedstrijd zeilers

Voor onze F16 en A-cat zijn wij op zoek naar wedstrijd zeilers die op de X16F of V1R gaan zeilen.
Uiteindelijke doel is;
A-cat. Deelname aan de European Championships A-cat op het Garda meer van 22 tot 29 juni 2012.
F16. Deelname aan de F16 Europeans op het Como meer van 4-11 augustus 2012.

Bimare Benelux is ook op zoek naar een jeugd team met veel potentie in de F16.

Bimare In de Benelux

Per 30 januari 2012 zijn wij officieel gestart met Bimare Benelux.

Per direkt leveren wij het gehele programma van Bimare High Performance Catamarans.
Dit programma bestaat uit een F16, F18HT en een A-cat. Bimare, gevestigd in Italië, Is nog een van de weinige echte Catamaran fabrieken in de wereld.
Alles maar dan ook echt alles dat nodig is voor de bouw van een Catamaran gebeurt in eigen huis tot en met de mast en zeilen.
Zeker bij de wat grotere merken is er steeds meer sprake van outsourcing van een gedeelte van de productie. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de productie van rompen in Korea en of China.
Bimare, gerund door de familie Petrucci, levert door het in huis houden van de gehele productie top kwaliteit en is in staat snel in te spelen op innovatie.
Het gebruik van Carbon in de ontwerpen is erg hoog en de 2 paradepaardjes, X16F en V1R, worden zelfs voor 100% uit Carbon geproduceerd. De productie van de Carbon-masten en beams gebeurt ook in eigen huis. Op iedere Bimare staat overigens een carbon mast.
Beams en masten worden geproduceerd uit prepeg-carbon en bij 7 bar en 130 graden celcius gebakken in een eigen autoclaaf.

De watersport is niet nieuw voor de mensen achter Bimare Benelux en daardoor is het mogelijk om per direkt een full service pakket aan haar klanten te bieden. Denk hierbij aan begeleiding bij het in gebruik nemen van uw nieuwe boot, tuning tips met een begrijpelijke uitleg en helaas maar soms toch nodig vakkundige reparatie van uw hoogwaardige boot.
In de zeer nabije toekomst levert Bimare Benelux ook trailers die speciaal geschikt zijn voor haar catamarans. Hiermee is het cirkeltje helemaal rond om probleemloos te genieten van het zeilen of om voor de winst te gaan tijdens wedstrijden in uw klasse.
Om het zeilen nog leuker te maken zal Bimare Benelux regelmatig zeil clinics en vakanties aanbieden op het Como meer een plek waar wij zelf al jaren de Bimare catamarans de sporen geven.

the first BIG news is that, after perhaps ten years from its last win, BIMARE got back to victory in its home waters.
With Teo di Battista at the helm, the V1R Mark II fitted with the new BIMARE Flexi-Plus mast showed a commanding control of the over the 78 boat fleet (with many of the top European Acatters such as Bob Baier, Sjoerd Hoekstra, Paolo Penco, Peterjan Dwarhuis, Arno Terra; Peter Saarberg etc).
The excellent performance of the V1R was confirmed by Francesco Marcolini who finished 4th in front of the past Europen Champion Bob Baier.
The second BIG news is that both the first placed BIMARE A cats were fitted with straight boards, thus ending an egemony of curved boards which lasted many months.
As far as I know BIMARE is actually the only boatyard selling A cats with trunks which can host both straight and curved boards. Perhaps others will follow.
The 6 races were sailed in very regular conditions with steady 5 to 12 knot wind and fairly flat waters.
At the the Vele di Pasqua regatta made their debut the new Peter Saarberg's design named Vision which got the 2nd spot with Sjoerd Hoekstra, past three time winner of the event (2006-2007 and 2008), and the 26th with the same Pieter Saarberg and the Flyer F4 which with Helmut Stumhofer placed 9th.
In all BIMARE V1R won 4 out of the 6 races.
In the top ranked we find also Georg Reutter (3rd), Bob Baier (5th) and Mathias Dietz (6th) all sailing Nils Bunkenburg designed NIkitas.

Formula 16: Bimare X16F launch

Bimare X16F Formula 16 compliant
Stylish looks for the X16, below an innovative carbon decagonal beam. If any company can be branded as a genuine "Catamaran Factory" that´s Bimare from Italy. There are others with the knowhow and volume but already outsourcing production or also focusing on other products. But these guys are making their own beams, masts, and now also sails , besides of course the hulls and platform.
These pics are better than the first posted, showing a good overall volume, I think more than the Falcon or Viper.
For sure a child of their also smooth looking A-Class VR-1.

The Petrucci family produce some of the finest cats available. They should follow BCM example and get some notorius Pro to race their products and have more exposure, as you can have the best boat on the market but is clear that you also need to be a 1st class sailor to be on top.

I know that in USA Randy Smith is sailing a VR-1 provided by US importer Matt McDonald from Falcon Marine. So I hope to see a Bimare X16F sailing one on one against the 2B/Viper gang at next F16 Worlds.

Besides some discussions on the F16 class success they are steadily gathering momentum and more builders are supporting the class. They might not reach the level of popularity of the F18 but still lots of room and years for them to grow.

This new F16 is a good proof, and it also will test the class rules, as with a top sailor helming , he/she will experience some light platform beneath them, as the F version is full carbon weighting 105kg ready to sail.
