Do you have a computer without a hard drive activity light? If so, then TrayStatus is for you. I recently purchased a notebook that had no indicator lights at all, and after a couple of weeks I got frustrated and created TrayStatus. TrayStatus can show you the following information in your taskbar’s notification area (system tray):

Num Lock status

Caps Lock status

Scroll Lock status

Hard Drive activity (read or write) with current speed in a tooltip

If you need to show this information in your taskbar, download TrayStatus today!

I am very happy to announce the release of DisplayFusion 3.0.6! Actually, it was released last weekend and I forgot to announce the release. Oops! Well, never mind that, the new version is out there and it’s better than ever. The observant among you may have noticed that there was no version 3.0.5 announcement. Unfortunately version 3.0.5 was released then followed up 3 days later by version 3.0.6. Version 3.0.5 represented a significant change in the way DisplayFusion handled the taskbars, so I was expecting a few bugs to slip through. And a few did slip through, but no worries, version 3.0.6 was released quickly to take care of any loose ends. These new versions have a number of changes:

Added the “All taskbars show relevant windows” in Windows 7

Taskbars now use Aero rendering in Windows 7

Better Winamp compatibility

Taskbar buttons with & in the text would show up incorrectly

Added an “Open Task Manager” to the DisplayFusion context menu

Changed: Added a bunch of new advanced settings

Taskbar window thumbnail previews now use the windows themes and look more native

Taskbar items now blink/flash when they need attention (ex: instant messaging windows)

Performance improvements (reduced CPU usage, reduced response time… etc)

As always, this represents only a fraction of the actual changes in this release, and only highlights the major advances. For a complete run-down head over to the official change log. If you haven’t been prompted to upgrade already, I would encourage you to head over to the DisplayFusion page and download the new version today!

I am very happy to announce the release of DisplayFusion 3.0.4! This new version has some important bug fixes, along with some exciting new features. Some of the biggest new features are the addition of taskbar thumbnail window previews and the ability to drag/drop files onto the DisplayFusion taskbar items, just like the Windows ones. Here are some more of the new features and fixes:

Added taskbar thumbnail window previews (hover over taskbar items for a thumbnail window preview)

Added drag/drop taskbar button sorting (on DisplayFusion taskbars only)

Taskbars are no longer removed/re-added when closing the Settings window

Dragging over a DisplayFusion taskbar item now restores that window so you can drag/drop in it

Added an option to disable the “Do you wish to apply these settings?” wallpaper prompt

Full Microsoft Excel 2002/2003/2007 taskbar compatibility in all operating systems

Fixed an issue that caused the taskbar icons to be lower quality in certain situations

Fixed clicking on a focused taskbar item didn’t always minimize it in Windows 7

Fixed monitor order was sometimes different than Windows and affected window movement hotkeys

Fixed an issue that caused the wallpaper to be tiled incorrectly when high DPI settings are in use in Vista/Win7

Taskbar thumbnail window previews

As you can see, there are a number of important changes. You can see the complete list of changes in the DisplayFusion Change Log. There is also a new Portuguese (Portugal) translation available on the DisplayFusion Languages page – thanks Rui Pedro da Silva Gomes da Costa!

I would encourage everyone to update as soon as you can to take advantage of the new functionality.

Since being released in August 2007, DisplayFusion has racked up more than a half a million downloads. Unfortunately, I only started tracking downloads in January 2008. Starting from January 2008, DisplayFusion reached 500,000 this afternoon! If I’m not mistaken, I believe a celebration is in order. To commemorate this special event I will be raising DisplayFusion’s price to $500,000 per license. Oh wait, that doesn’t sound right. How about 50% off instead? Starting right now, until Wednesday at midnight (GMT-5), DisplayFusion will be on sale for only $10 per license! Volume discounts still apply as well. That means you can pickup 2 licenses for only $16, or 5 licenses for just $30 (Canadian Dollars). This sale is only on for 24 hours, so if you’ve been waiting to pickup DisplayFusion Pro now is your chance!

When an AutoCRC value is present in an ISO, the CRC32 checksum will always return 0xffffffff.

I am very happy to announce the release of DisplayFusion 3.0.2. Actually, I released this new version last weekend and forgot to post about it. Sorry everyone! This release is a substantial update to DisplayFusion and includes a number of often-requested features, like Taskbar auto-hiding. So, without further ado lets take a look at what has changed in this version:

Taskbars now support auto-hiding

Added a “Taskbar Opacity” option, to make the DisplayFusion Taskbar translucent

Wallpaper checker/changer is now delayed 30 seconds from application startup, to allow the system to fully start before trying to change anything

Huge improvement in response time for taskbar item updating (new windows, closed windows, focused windows… etc)

Better window management compatibility with Google Chrome and Apple Safari 4 (doesn’t move browser to the next monitor when middle-clicking a tab at the top of the window)

Silent installations now work correctly

As always, you can see the complete list of changes in the DisplayFusion Change Log. This update fixes the button tooltips and fixes the ViewState decoder window’s resizing issues. If you don’t want to take advantage of this new feature you can easily disable it in the settings menu.

Have you ever needed to find a file buried somewhere in your computer? Have you ever needed to find a specific string of text inside a file? FileSeek can do that, and more. FileSeek is lightning fast, small and super easy to use. It can even be integrated right into the Windows Explorer right-click menu to provide quick and easy access. FileSeek doesn’t use background indexing, so when FileSeek is closed your computer’s performance won’t be affected. This new release of FileSeek adds some significant new features, and fixes a number of long-standing issues. Here is a quick rundown on some of the major changes:

Full Windows 7 support

Added a “Windows Context Menu” option to the file result context menu

Double-clicking a search result item will open the file with the default file handler

Shows the current search path in the window caption bar

The 4 search criteria boxes now store a history of 10 items

The path box now auto-completes using a combination of the history and file system

This is only a sample of the improvements in this new version. You can view the full change log here. I would encourage everyone to update to the latest version today to take advantage of all these enhancements. If you haven’t tried FileSeek before, what are you waiting for? Start searching your files right now!

I want something that will look good on my wife’s CafePress fitted T or on the side of a coffee mug, and my poor attempt at logo design just won’t cut it. So, if you think you’ve got what it takes just head over to my logo design contest on ‘99 designs’ and submit your work. There is $175 (USD) up for grabs for the winner, and there are still 5 days left in the contest. I have never contracted out design work before, and I wasn’t sure where to start. So I thought this contest would be an interesting way to see what people can come up with. I am looking forward to seeing what you can create!

I am very happy to announce the release of HashTools 1.2. HashTools is a small utility that I use for generating hashes of files before and after I transfer them, to verify the integrity of the file. It can calculate MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384 and SHA512 hashes. This updated released contains a few small fixes, and a change in the way it deals with hash files. Previously, you could create a file called “filename.sha1″ (for example) that contained the SHA1 hash for your file (filename.ext) and HashTools would automatically load and compare the generated hash. Now, it will attempt to load a hash file with the name “filename.ext.sha1″. I had to make this change to allow hash files to be created for files with the same filename but different extensions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. I would encourage everyone to update to this new version to take advantage of the many fixes and enhancements.

I am very happy to announce the release of DisplayFusion 3.0.1. This version fixes a bunch of important bugs, and adds a few small features. I’d like to thank everyone that has reported issues so far in the DisplayFusion Support Forum. I never would have been able to squash all of these bugs without your help. Here is a summary of some of the bigger changes in this release:

Added an option: “Rotate wallpaper images automatically using JPEG EXIF information”

Added a registry key to force a specific taskbar height (see support forum)

Fixed application compatibility with a bunch of applications (AQT Query Tool, Microsoft Excel, TOAD, Paint.NET… etc)

Fixed an issue that caused a restored window to be too size for the monitor and the caption bar would be pushed off the top

Fixed an issue that would cause the DisplayFusion taskbar to appear half-way up the screen when changing resolutions

Fixed an issue that would sometimes cause a grey bar to appear on the top and left of scaled wallpaper images

If you would like to see the full list of changes you can visit the DisplayFusion Change Log. You may be required to reboot when installing this update, because of the new DisplayFusion hook DLL. Not everyone will need to reboot, but if you are prompted to reboot DisplayFusion won’t work properly until you do. I would advise everyone to update to this new version as soon as possible, as there are a number of important fixes in this release.

Thanks everyone, and happy downloading!

I am very pleased to announce the release of DisplayFusion 3.0! This release represents the most significant changes DisplayFusion has ever seen, and some of the most exciting new features. It has been 1 year since I released DisplayFusion 2.0 back in February 2008, and a healthy community has grown up around DisplayFusion since then. I have had many people submitting suggestions and others offering to help with testing and translations. As a result, DisplayFusion 3.0 has been under heavy development and community testing for the last 3 months, with over 50 people actively testing in 9 languages on every version of Windows from Windows 2000 to Windows 7 and everything in between.

The single biggest new feature in DisplayFusion 3.0 is the addition of Multi-Monitor Taskbar support for DisplayFusion Pro users. This has been the most requested feature since DisplayFusion was released, and has also required the most amount of work to develop. Thanks to a significant amount of testing, the Multi-Monitor Taskbar support in DisplayFusion 3.0 is first-class and completely integrates with Windows. It uses the standard Windows Themes in Windows XP/Vista, and even works perfectly with hacked Windows XP themes that use a modified UxTheme.dll file. There are a variety of configuration options available for the Multi-Monitor Taskbar, allowing you to configure it exactly the way you want to.

One huge benefit from community involvement is the addition of more language translations. DisplayFusion 2.2 was originally released with 3 languages, but I happy to announce that DisplayFusion 3.0 now has 9 supported languages and is constantly growing. DisplayFusion 3.0 is being bundled with 4 languages (English, French, German and Spanish) with 5 more available for immediate download (Italian, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, Dutch and Portuguese).

When I released the first version of DisplayFusion with integrated Flickr support, I had every intention of adding more image providers at a later date. However, most wallpaper sites don’t provide an API like Flickr, and as a result integration just isn’t possible in most cases. During the development of DisplayFusion 3.0 I was approached by Vlad from the popular Vladstudio website. Vladstudio has arguably some of the best wallpapers available for download, and all of the standard resolution images are completely free. The new Vladstudio wallpaper integration is free for everyone to use and allows access to the entire Vladstudio collection. People with paid Vladstudio accounts will have access to higher quality multi-monitor wallpaper, but free users aren’t left out. Free users will have access to the same excellent images, just at a lower resolution.

DisplayFusion 3.0 has also received a complete interface overhaul. Every piece of the interface has been revised and streamlined to allow for easier use. For example, the Settings window has been divided up into more tabs for better separation of configuration options, while becoming easier to navigate at the same time.

The Wallpaper settings window has also undergone a transformation. With the addition of some excellent new image post-processing features (free for everyone to use) and the streamlining of the interface, it is now more powerful and easier to use than ever. You can do everything from applying a single image on one monitor to setting a random Vladstudio image to be spanned across all monitors. Everything has been simplified, but made more powerful at the same time.

There are a number of smaller, frequently requested changes in DisplayFusion 3.0 as well. For example, the addition of a HotKey to change to a new random wallpaper image (DisplayFusion Pro only). Moving windows between monitors has been made even easier now, thanks to the addition of the new middle-click window movement option. When enabled, just middle-click on a window’s caption bar and the window will be moved to the next monitor. Very easy, and much faster than dragging the window to the desired monitor. Of course, the old drag-and-drop window movement is still there, and has been enhanced to provide better application compatibility.

DisplayFusion 3.0 also introduces a special game detection feature. When a game is starting up DisplayFusion will suspend all background operations to free up maximum systems resources for your game. Once you exit the game, DisplayFusion will resume everything automatically without you having to touch anything.

As always in any big release there are dozens of bug fixes as well. DisplayFusion 3.0 includes some fixes that apply to wallpaper centering, mouse lag, HotKey bindings and much, much more.

I would encourage everyone to update to DisplayFusion 3.0 today. If you have the auto-update option enabled you will be prompted to update the next time you start DisplayFusion. If you don’t have auto-update enabled, just head over to the DisplayFusion page to download the new version. DisplayFusion Pro users don’t need to worry, your existing license will work with DisplayFusion 3.0 and all future DisplayFusion versions.

I would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who helped to make this release possible. From the people who submitted suggestions, to the people who helped translate and test, you all made this release possible.

Thanks everyone!

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. It seems that some people were very busy over the holidays, as I recently received 4 translation files for 3 different languages. I can’t thank these people enough for taking time out of their busy schedules to translate DisplayFusion into their native language. Here are the latest additions to the DisplayFusion languages:

This release is a very minor update, but includes some long overdue functionality. Whenever the ViewState fails to decode and you get the infamous “The serialized data is invalid” error, this new version will provide you with more troubleshooting information. Thanks to a tip from “pista7″ in the Support Forums, ASP.NET ViewState Helper will now tell you a more specific reason for the decoding failure. For example, you might be missing a 3rd party assembly that is required for deserializing a value. I would recommend all existing users of the ASP.NET ViewState Helper upgrade as soon as they can to take advantage of this new feature.

After my initial post about starting a private beta for DisplayFusion v2.3 I received an overwhelming response. I had to start turning people away to keep the number of testers to a manageable size. However, I ended up with a very diverse test group – which is exactly what I was looking for. There are people using Windows XP, Vista (x86 and x64), Server 2003 and Server 2008. Some people have Windows Themes enabled, some don’t. Most are running English operating systems, but there are a few that are running localized copies of DisplayFusion. Testing is going extremely well, so I thought I would just highlight some of the exciting things coming in DisplayFusion v2.3:

Multi-monitor taskbar support:

Adds a taskbar to every monitor

Takes advantage of Windows Themes so it looks like a native part of the operating system

Works and looks excellent with or without Windows Themes enabled

Full right-click context menu support for all taskbar items

Option to hide taskbar items from the Windows taskbar if they are present on the DisplayFusion taskbar

New mouse shortcut:

Middle-clicking on a window’s caption bar will move it to the next monitor

Completely re-designed Settings window:

Easier to navigate

Options are grouped and ordered more logically

Integration with Vladstudio.com:

Integrated just like Flickr in DisplayFusion

Choose single images, or have DisplayFusion select random images on a timer

This has turned out to be a substantial new release. With the numerous bug-fixes and tons of new functionality, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest DisplayFusion releases ever.

With these new changes, and after much deliberation, I have decided to adjust DisplayFusion’s pricing. Effective January 1, 2009 DisplayFusion’s price will be changing to $20 (CAD). I believe this new price is still a fair representation of what DisplayFusion is worth, especially taking into account the additional functionality version 2.3 will bring. If you are interested in how much this will cost in your local currency I have done the calculation for a few of the major currencies here:

CAD: $20.00 (base price in Canadian Dollars)

USD: $15.50 (US Dollars)

EUR: €12.20 (Euros)

GBP: £10.60 (British Pounds)

Please keep in mind that the exchange rate for each of these currencies will fluctuate. I am announcing this price change 1 month in advance so that people currently evaluating DisplayFusion Pro will still have time to finish their trial and purchase a Pro license at the current price. Also, effective immediately, I have introduced volume discounts on the purchase page. This is how the discounts work:

Purchase 2 or more licenses and receive 20% off each license

Purchase 3 or more licenses and receive 30% off each license

Purchase 5 or more licenses and receive 40% off each license

If you want to use DisplayFusion Pro on more than one computer, this is an excellent way to purchase multiple licenses and save some money at the same time. As always, I would love to hear any feedback you have about any of these changes, or anything in general. You can use the contact page, or you can find me on Twitter. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes, I have finally succumb to the forces of evil and now I can’t stop tweeting. If you would like to follow all the latest developments with Binary Fortress Software, and what I do in my spare time, come and visit me on Twitter. For example, tonight you would have learned that I released DisplayFusion v2.3 Beta 4 to the group of testers, and broke 8,000 gamer points on the 360. Fun times! The Support Forum is still the official place to get help, but if I’m currently on Twitter just tweet your question my way and I’ll see what I can do. Oh, and it never hurts to just stop in and say ‘hi’.

After many months of development I am ready to start talking about one of the biggest new features planned for DisplayFusion v2.3: Multi-Monitor Taskbar Support. This is the most requested feature, and also the most difficult to create, so it has taken some time to get to this stage. I am officially ready to start beta testing and I’m looking for people who would like to give this feature a try. This feature will be a Pro only feature, so this beta will only be available to people with DisplayFusion Pro licenses.

Here is what the multi-monitor taskbar looks like in Windows XP with the Blue theme. The Windows Taskbar is on the left and the DisplayFusion Taskbar is on the right. As you can see, all of the taskbar windows are being shown on both taskbars.

In the second screenshot you can see DisplayFusion is only showing the windows that are on each screen in the DisplayFusion Taskbar. There are still a number of options that need to be finalized, but I want to start testing now to get as much feedback as I can from other people’s desktop configurations. If you are interested in trying this out please contact me and I’ll send you the download link.

Update: When you contact me please send the email address you used to register DisplayFusion, or your DisplayFusion Pro license key so I can verify your Pro status. Thanks!

This new release is mostly a bug-fix release, and doesn’t add any new features. Here are some of the things addressed in this release:

Resized some windows to allow them to work properly at 800×600

Fixed an issue that prevented DisplayFusion from starting when using certain locales (ex: Turkish)

Fixed some of the “jerky mouse movement” issues in rare situations

Fixed some windows failing to drag maximized or snap properly (ex: Windows Live Messenger)

If you would like to see the full list of changes, head over to the DisplayFusion change log. I would encourage everyone to update as soon as they can. If you are using DisplayFusion Pro then you should be prompted to upgrade and DisplayFusion will take care of downloading and installing this update. For everyone using the free version you will be notified of the new version but you will need to download and install the update manually from the DisplayFusion website.

As always, if you encounter any issues please be sure to check out the DisplayFusion Support Forum or you can contact me directly. Thanks everyone!

Added an “Open Containing Folder” context menu option for selected files

Check out the full change log for more details on these changes. Also changed in this release is the addition of an advertisement in the Settings window for one of my other applications, DisplayFusion. This is just a hard-coded image, and will never, ever connect to the internet to download new ads. This isn’t some sleazy spyware stuff, this is just a link to one of my applications. This is the first application that I have tried this with, and I would be very interested to hear any feedback on this in the FileSeek Support Forum, or just contact me directly.

A big thanks to everyone who helped with this release. Thanks everyone!
