The fifth album in the Atmospheres & Textures series is a collection of three atmospheric soundscapes, improvised and recorded live using a specially created generative system for live ambient performances.

For much of the time, you are listening to four layers of sounds, three using the same source material, all drifting over one another to create an endlessly drifting piece of ambient music.

A collection of deep and intense ambient music.

Positive and ethereal.

Using a minimal set up (laptop, headphones, mini keyboard) in a new location presented challenges but meant I had to try new things. I found this very inspiring and ended up recording three Bing Satellites albums as well as starting my new project Theta Wave Orchestra.

While the music is slow and drifting, there is a brightness and electricity to these recordings.

Slow and drifting ambient music.

Home is a one take, live improvised recording.

The music washes and fades as it slowly develops over the 53 minutes. It is calm , warm and peaceful.

Where is home?
I've lived in many, many houses in my life but for the past almost 20 years, I've been lucky enough to live in the same place. This place has seen me through good times and bad.

I can make music in here. I can watch the sunrise and the sunset from my studio, surrounded by trees even though in in the middle of a big city. This is my home - for now.

I have said for many years that I would need a damn good reason to leave this place. Now I have one (a damn good one!) and in a few months, I will be moving to a different continent to start a new chapter of my life.

Such change in my life has made me quite reflection over the past few months and this has fed into my music. There is sadness and positivity. I seem to be able to say much more in making music in this way than with words (as you can see).

A largely peaceful and atmospheric ambient soundscape improvised and recorded in one take and released the same day.

Due to a very hectic schedule, mainly taken up by my final year at university, I have not had time to record any music for a long time (31st October was the last time I recorded anything live). During this time, I have taken my studio apart to sell much of my equipment.

On a break from university, I finally had a chance to rebuild my new, more minimal set up. This is the first piece I have recorded in the new set up.

I broadcast some of this performance on Facebook, although the audio and video quality is very poor.

Playing after a break is usually a pleasure: I forget how much fun this way of making music is. After such a long break, at least for me, I decided to release this performance on the same day as recording it. One of the joys of being in charge of your own music!

Please enjoy this album safe in the knowledge that I'm probably recording another album as you read this ha!

A collection of atmospheric and peaceful ambient music.
The mood of this album is reflective due to upcoming major changes in my life.
This mood is, however, inspiring.
I awoke one morning and needed to create music. I gathered together a collection of sounds I could use and started improvising something into a long, slowly decaying loop.
Some way in, I wanted to add some ebowed guitar but that was set up with my laptop in another room. Instead of stopping, I kept recording in my studio and, knowing what notes were playing in the studio, I set about recording the ebowed guitar separately. I then skipped between rooms, adding to the two loops that were being simultaneously recorded.
These two loops were mixed along with a couple of piano improvisations recorded later that morning (the piano parts were played into the Soothing Images virtual tape loop system), along with the choir ending, recorded that same evening.

There you have it - an album of deeply ambient music recorded in just one day.
I am very proud of this music. I hope you enjoy it too.

Music for sleep. Music for dreams. Music for escape.
Dreamworld is a strange, mesmerising journey into the unconscious.
It wasn't a conscious (or unconscious) effort on my part but on these sessions things got weird.
Once I start recording, I lose myself in the music. I just let it go where it wanted to go. It's a wonderful experience for a musician such as myself. I hope it is just as fulfilling for you, the listener.

An album of slow and drifting ambient music available on CD and download.
Due to a hectic few months (getting married, university assignments), I had no time to make any music. The music on this album was the first music I created after an unbelievable three month hiatus.
This album continues my exploration of minimal music, the idea that less is more. The pieces are continuous and often sound vast but I want to slow things down and not bombard the listener. I want the music to sound that it just happened, a natural occurrence, like a random cloud formation or the sound of wind blowing through the trees.

In January 2016, I made a second visit to Sweden as a guest of the electronic music collective Dogma Noveau for their annual get-together.
A weekend was spent creating music in beautiful and inspiring surroundings on the frozen Baltic coast.
The music on this album was recorded on and around that trip at MCos, Manchester and Arkösund and Stockholm in Sweden, using a minimal set-up: laptop, midi keyboard and the wonderful Roland SH-32 synth - fantastic but small enough to fit in my hand luggage! I also did some field recordings which are used in various ways in this music.

The music on this album was recorded in one week in March 2012, a week when I was rather unwell and thought I had done very little other than take my cold medicine and watch TV in bed. It is available on CD now. The download version will be available on 21 April 2014. The songs on this album are in part inspired by Tristan Da Cunha, the most remote inhabited island in the world. It can only be reached by a seven day boat journey. I find the idea of peace and quiet and isolation appealing but this place goes beyond anything you can imagine - a tiny volcanic island thousands of miles from anything... anything! The first five songs were recorded for Album In A Day volume 8 and indeed, versions of the first three tracks appeared on that album. Some other tracks were originally intended to be released on a Soothing Images album but many of those recordings were plundered for other projects. The ones included here seemed to fit quite well with the atmosphere I wanted. While the people of Tristan Da Cunha in some ways lead an idyllic life, they must work hard and be very self-reliant. They are at the mercy of nature - occasional extreme weather, illness and living on a volcano. Towards the end of 2013, I lost interest in improvising (although not for long!) and looked for new ways of creating music. The first track, Fifteen Below, uses the same generative processes I use to create music for my side projects The Lovely Moon and The Ambient Visitor but is less melodic. There are hints of notes but the whole thing is more atmospheric than musical. It is likely to be something I do more of in the future. The music for the second track, Midnight, is directly derived from the first few lines of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, using the same method I used for Metamorphosis of Narcissus from the EP In response to​ Salvador Dali. This is an interesting method which produces oddly timed and intriguing melodies that would not otherwise occur. And yes, it is likely I will do more songs like this. I decided, perhaps because this is the thirteenth album, to start off in a darker mood. However, the key changes from the minor to a brighter major around half way. Well, it is finally here. Nearly ten months after volume 10, comes the eleventh volume on the Twilight Sessions series. Recorded during April and May 2013, the album is a collection of quiet, improvised ambient songs performed on guitar (a fair bit of ebow too), piano and my usual selection of synths. It is the first Twilight Sessions album to be released on CD. The previous albums will be released on CD over the next few months. The music is played into a long, slowly decaying loop. These loops are quite long (often around 90 seconds or more) and with very little rhythm to speak of, it is difficult to know precisely where I am in the loop, so I can add notes and sounds where I see fit, but can never know exactly what I am adding these notes to. The whole album - 15 quiet songs and 15 accompanying photographs on 2 CDs with a 20 page booklet. How the music is created: A 16 bar phrase is played. That phrase is fed into a slowly decaying 16 bar loop, similar to the one used in Twilight Sessions. That loop is fed into a slowly decaying 6 bar loop which repeates the first loop every 6 bars, so that soon, there are several layers of the original phrase that interact and create new themes and melodies. They seem to appear from nowhere, but these new melodies are destined to happen as soon as each note is played in the original 16 bar phrase.
