Eleven: Eleven - Designer Shopping Night, Fall Fashion Party

Eleven: Eleven Boutique in Kensington YYC hosted a "Fall Fashion Party" (Designer Shopping Night) Friday night at the store. It is becoming more and more enjoyable going to fashion events hosted by the local talents. I always have an amazing time mingling/chit-chatting with other fashionista.

Although Eleven: Eleven has been around for quite some time, it was my first time actually going into the store. Right away, as soon as I walked in, I felt the heart-warming welcome. The boutique carries Canadian designer fashion and accessories, which consists the bohemian, retro and artsy vibes. I would describe the store as "Honest" and "Down to earth". "Honest" because you can tell all the merchandize are very local, and it does not hide from the fact that it's Canadian. It truly promotes the Canadian art and culture; "Down to earth" because as much as styles are important, the pieces are also very functional. You can wear their fashion pieces and go "Wow, that's neat!" but not having to feel "No I don't think I can wear that on the street". It actually reminded me a couple boutiques I visited in San Francisco and Toronto.

The "Fall Fashion Party" featured Canadian designers: Ruby Ellen Designs (one of my current likes), Pout Clothing, Cherry Chic Designs and my good-o-friend, Bano eeMee. There was also a mini-trunk sale of accessories, complementary wine and snacks located at the upper level of the store.

As usual, Binzento Vincente correspondent KO was at the scene helping me snap photos. Other friends and fashion bloggers: Diva Lounge, Karolina's Style, Insert Calgary, Rania, Marsina of MaNoKin Design, Kim Flanagan and Domingo were also there.

A fashion show was shown towards the end of the night. I was there especially to support my friend Aleem Arif, the golden boy behind Bano eeMee. Eleven: Eleven, great job organizing this event. Binzento Vincente will be back to pick out some accessories next visit :)

Glenbow Museum YYC Animation Exhibition: Launch Party

Binzento Vincente got an extended invite by his correspondent and film expert, KO to the launch party of the Animation Exhibition, which is currently featured at the Glenbow Museum. As much as I like fashion and science, I can not express my obsessions for animation. Growing up watching Japanese anime, and (not embarrassed to admit) Disney films, animation is a huge part of my childhood. The current exhibition is more than just cartoons, it featured the evolution of animation (dated back in the 1800's and early 1900's to present Hollywood blockbuster films).

Other than Tim Burton, I was so happy that Hayao Miyazaki was also recognized at the exhibition. Canadian artist, Samantha Savage Smith guest performed on stage. I believe the animation exhibition will last until December. Also, anyone who's interested in animation and art, heads up to the upcoming Giraf Animation Festival in YYC November 2nd-6th.

KO Art Show @ Studio Intent/ D.W Upcoming Vancouver Fashion Week

I hope everyone had a great weekend (a fabulous Canadian Thanksgiving weekend if you are in Canada). Binzento Vincente here didn't do much though; the extra holiday last weekend was the long waited time to re-energize myself. Well now I am ready to go back on track and back on my blog! :) So last Thursday I went and supported my blog correspondent KO's mini-art show held at Studio Intent in Art Central. What a cozy venue to host such a friendly event. Similar to her last show, KO displayed some of her Japanese inspired Anato-moto paintings as well as some of her new pop trendy artwork (which I adored). I suggest KO to print these pop-art pieces on T-shirts or even accessories. (Big hit, at least for me for sure <3)

Pocky sticks, Sapporo beer, Japanese bubbly champaign and delicious sushi from Globefish accommodated all the guests. What makes it even better was we could shop or admire the high quality Canadian designed fashions in Studio Intent.

D.W in Vancouver Fashion Week

I am excited to extend the news that our very own YYC designer Daryl White of D.W will be debuting his new collection "vauxdeux" in the upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 Vancouver Fashion Week. D.W have only been in the fashion industry since 2010, but his unique visual designs and hard work towards promoting the brand within the community drove him to rapid success. Below is a small preview of the new "vauxdeux" collection. Binzento Vincente is liking what he's seeing so far. It is something along my taste and I really can't wait to see the rest of Daryl's collection.

On Friday night, I spent a lovely dinner with my dearest and biggest Binzento Vincente supporter Andrew T. and fashion blogger Rupi from The Diva Lounge at Without Papers Pizza/Wine Bar.

Diva Lounge will help organize the Bollywood Fashion Show on October 21st. I've never been to a Bollywood fashion show before and no doubt I will be there~ :)

"Vida en Color" - Photography work by Fela Dales

I find that you can not truly understand artists unless you spend time making conversations about their work with them. This holds true meeting photographer Fela Dales (Fela Photography).

Binzento Vincente was invited to Fela's solo photography work: "Vida en Color", which was at the Cafe Koi. This exhibition combines both black & white and color photo prints. Fela came to Canada from Colombia 4 years ago. She was especially inspired by the diverse cultures in Canada. Her photography style was all about "capturing the interesting spontaneous moment". Each photo in "Vida en Color" tells a story about Fela's experience from her home to a foreign country; from one destination to another. Binzento Vincente thought it would be a good time to do the vlog moment with the photographer. Fela explains about her work and the vlog (though not the best quality :p), you can enjoy some of the photography work I saw at the event:

Talking to Fela gave me better insight about her work. I'd always known that she's a photographer, but have never really had the chance to speak with her about them. Sophia Models International Fall Luxe Fashion Show/ Eveline Charles Academy Vidal Sassoon Documentary. Go CORE Go!

because there was a HOT Sophia Models International Fall Luxe Fashion Show, and an extremely COOL Vidal Sassoon documentary screening at the Eveline Charles Academy.

Sophia Models International Fall Luxe Fashion Show:

Sophia Models teamed up with the major designer clothing stores at The Core hosted a Fall 2011 fashion show, which showcased pretty much clothing and accessories you can pick up at the shopping centre.

I will admit that I had no expectation when I decided to attend the show, since I am not exactly fond with boutique stores runway. However, Sophia Models did a great job, the routine was organized (no dead-time in between) and I actually found it enjoyable. It attracted many people during the busy lunch hour (12-1pm) to stand around and watch the entire runway show.

In particular, model Ania B was absolutely gorgeous and professional, she brought herself an unique character that was distinct from the rest of the models. The fashion show contained both women's and men's wear from current collections carried by H&M, BCBG Max Azria, Banana Republic, Harry Rosen, Judith & Charles, Holt Renfrew, Boutique of Leathers and Town Shoes.

The show lasted about 30 min. The Core also announced the winner of a Media contest, the money prize goes to the participant's charity of choice.

Vidal Sassoon Documentary Screening at Eveline Charles Academy:

Here was a COOL event that I didn't want to miss out.

Eveline Charles Academy opened its Calgary location this year. It is one of the largest hair/beauty schools in North America. Began in Edmonton 2005, then Vancouver 2010, and now in Calgary, the 10 000+ sq ft. space located at The Core gives people who are interested an opportunity the education and certification required for the hair-and-beauty industry. In addition to working with NAIT, Eveline Charles is also the only academy in Canada that is in partnership with Vidal Sassoon and the given credential is recognized by 38 countries around the world. Many guests attended the screening of the Vidal Sassoon documentary, and employees at Eveline Charles opened its doors and gave us a mini tour of the new Academy.

The Vidal Sassoon documentary was inspirational and insightful. It followed closely the life of Vidal Sassoon, and how he became one of the most influential hairstylists in history. I learned from Vidal that life is full of challenges and struggles. In order to succeed, one must not be afraid of failure, and take his/her chance when the timing is right.

Evelyn Charles herself was also at the screening. Though it was a brief meeting, Evelyn was very friendly lady and full of charisma.

Curvy Girls Are Beautiful - Espy Experience Curvy Girls Campaign Photoshoot

YYC's grand-reopened fashion/styling boutique "Espy Experience" is holding a sweet event on October 13th called the "Curvy Party" for celebrating the beauty of curvy women and ecstatic plus size fashion. What a meaningful event, because "no matter who or what we look like, we can all be beautiful". One of the stylists of Espy: Odessa, invited Binzento Vincente to their photoshoot of curvy women fashion for their campaign…

AND…for the very first time, Binzento Vincente made a video blog (vlog moment)…(I am no director and I've never hold a cam-corder in my life, so this is a big deal for me :p).

Though it was a cloudy/windy/cold day, we had a lot of fun shooting, along with another Espy stylist: Tianna, Photographer: Stu Robinson (Insomnia Art), Stylist: Kesar Lacroix (Kesar Designs) and our BEAAAAUUUUTIFUL curvy models: Britney and Karen. In the video, Odessa tells us her take on choosing the right fashion and style if you are a curvy lady. :) Other than the video, please also enjoy some of the shots I took during our day at the shoot! :)

Fashionsign - A Proud YYC Magazine Had Finally Launched!

I can't believe today is the last day of September, and comes October 1st very soon. I'd been getting many supportive comments/messages about my previous "guest blog" for The Girl With The Messy Hair. Thank you very much. Based on these positive feedbacks…I am considering doing more "style posts"? ehe Anyway, here's a magazine I like to talk about in this blog entry:

YYC very own Fashion and Lifestyle Magazine: Fashionsign has finally launched! This magazine can be purchased as digital or printed copy online. What's exciting is that Binzento Vincente was selected and featured as "The Blogger of the Issue". It's such an honour and thank you Fashionsign for all the support and compliments on the direction of this blog.

Binzento Vincente on "Blogger of the Issue" in September issue of Fashionsign Magazine

I have to praise the ladies behind creating this magazine. I know they had to over-come many obstacles and contributed a lot of their time and effort to put together the Fashionsign. Nothing is perfect, and neither is this published magazine, but their passion towards the fashion industry and dedication to the community are the driving force to success. I personally bought both the digital and printed copies, because their dreams touched my heart. Glancing the magazine, I can feel every drop of pure honesty in every page, every photo and every word. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but the imperfection also placed a smile on my face, because every sections or stories were relevant to my current life, and a reminder that YYC is one of my homes.

Before the official magazine launch, there was a Fashionsign Magazine Pre-launch Party at Stoneworx Gallery Art Central YYC. As usual, I see my fashionista and fashion blogger friends at the event.

…and designs by Chantel Traub, who does all the patterning and colours for her own fabric. I finally got to meet her in real person and she is absolutely a beautiful/talented young lady. Other than the amazing architecture work on her pieces, I enjoyed seeing the spring/summer vibes in her collection. The outfit the model was wearing on the cover of the new issue of Fashionsign Magazine was actually one of Chantel's work of art. I wish that someday Binzento Vincente will have a designer/blogger collaboration.

The Fashionsign afterparty was at Ubu lounge. It was indeed an awesome night. I wish Fashionsign continue their success and I look forward to reading more future issues.

I like to take my time here to mention a great film I'd really like this year at the Calgary International Film Festival. "The Skin I Live In" by Almodovar starring Antonio Bandaras and Elana Anaya.

This film is a Sci-Fi, Thriller, Romance, Erotic, Perversion, Sexual Confusion and Dark Comedy all blend into one major masterpiece. Highly recommended. Thanks to KO for suggesting watching this film tonight at the Film Festival. She will be writing a review for this film on her blog soon so please check it out. Being in a science background and research major, I can somehow relate myself in several scenes in the film. Not going to spoil the story here, and I am sure you will probably go wiki it anyway.

Lastly, starting next week, a NEW column called Real People With Real Style will be on Binzento Vincente. This column will feature interesting people I know with style in everyday life (and not necessarily someone in the fashion industry), and their "point-of-view" in fashion and personal style. Calgary International Film Festival 2011 Begins/ Understudy Menswear Boutique Grand Opening

Tonight was the opening red carpet gala event for the 2011 Calgary International Film Festival. This year's festival will begin on September 23rd to October 2nd, showcasing over 100 film selections from around the world.

2011 opening gala screening, Donovan's Echo, produced by Trent Carlson/Andria Spring and written by Jim Cliffe/Melodie Krieger was their first world premiere. The story is about the remnants of Dovonan Glover's (played by Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon)) haunting tragic past is seemingly coming to a full circle and repeating itself in the present time. It is about realization and forgiveness. Other casts include Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek) and Sonja Bennett (Rise of the Apes). This year's opening gala turn-out was no doubt way better than last year's. Although YYC (Calgary) isn't exactly known to be a film festival hub like big Canadian city Toronto (Toronto International Film Festival), this community has grown tremendously over last few years. Locals are becoming more opened and aware of social/entertainment events such as this one.

I interviewed Minister of Culture and Community Spirit Honourable Lindsay Blackett and one of the lead actors in Donovan's Echo Bruce Greenwood for my network Fairchild Television. Minister Lindsay Blackett has been a great supporter of YYC's film industry. YYC is really fortunate to have him to promote art and culture, which are seriously lacking in this city.

Bruce Greenwood said this is his second time visiting Calgary, the first was during his time shooting the movie Star Trek.

Of course, invited guests fancied themselves at the opening gala and on red carpet. I saw many familiar faces and many of my good friends. I even saw couple old high school classmates…funny (not to expose my age) this is the first time I'd seen them in decade.

2) Menswear boutique store Understudy grand-opening

…so shortly after the opening gala, I flew (not literally) to the grand opening event of menswear boutique Understudy. If readers recalled, I did a blog entry on boutique Gallery on 1st Street previously and mentioned that they were undergoing renovation. Well, Understudy is the finished "product" from the original Gallery on 1st.

Similar to the old Gallery, Understudy focus on carrying street wear but specifically, for men. The store is shifting its target on pursuing more preppy street-style looks. Menswear-only boutique is not something you can find "with your eyes closed" in YYC. Even if there is one, most of the designer labels are conventional and not quite Binzento Vincente (my) style.

Owners: Aaron Ellard, Reid Pollock, and Liam Rodgers knows that this city needs menswear boutiques, and there is a market for it. Some of the store items they carried include international labels: A.P.C., YMC, Norse Projects, Lifetime Collective, and also assortment of fashion magazines and accessories. Price wise, they are all very reasonable and affordable.

I did find a few things I really like. I suggest guys who are serious about looking for unique street fashion should check out this store.

Church My Style: Fashion and Lifestyle with "Skinny Bitch" Kim Barnouin

Ever experience one morning you woke up and looked at yourself in the mirror and said: "I look like sh*t!"? I know I have. However, overtime I learned that my psychology was mostly affected by my personal lifestyle choices. Ever since I cut back all the bad habits that does harm to my body and reevaluate my diet (especially when I became a vegetarian), I felt more positive as a whole. I am not a preacher and am not going to tell people to convert into a vegetarian, but I figured feeling positive requires me to learn how to take care myself.

Jason Krell Communications teamed up with Kim Flanagan, hosted the "Church My Style" event past Sunday at Hotel Arts YYC. This event focused on inspiring people to "Learn about themselves" and "Learn how to take care of their mind and body". It's a "religious gathering" for Fashion, Lifestyle and Well being.

Special guest of this event was Kim Barnouin, one of the authors for New York Best Seller: "Skinny Bitch". For those who haven't heard of the book, the content advocates vegan diets, anti-animal cruelty and the dark secrets behind factory farming. Most importantly, it entailed Kim Barnouin's transformation in living a positive, healthy lifestyle.

Other books Kim Barnouin co-wrote include: "Skinny Bitch in Kitch", "Skinny Bitchin", "Skinny Bitch Bun in the Over", "Skinny Bastard" and her first solo work (cook book) "Skinny Bitch Ultimate Everyday Cookbook". Despite Kim Barnouin said she's 42 and wore a simple long-sleeve grey tee and jeans that day, she was still glowing with natural beauty. I also greeted Kim Barnouin briefly and we both agreed that "you can't be lazy to be healthy".

Trunk Sale!

The morning also began with a light but elegant brunch, trunk sales, fashion show and live music performed by Jocelyn Alice. She had an amazing voice! Words can't described her vocal talents, unless you listen to her music. She said she will be launching her album in next couple months or so. I also loved her and her guitarist styles. At this event, Ms. KO brought one of her previous Anatamoto (check blog) paintings to display. Lovely.

The clothes at the fashion show were modelled by everyday women in different ages, sizes and status (they even had couple mom-soon-to-be models :)). Now that you've seen most of the stylists of the Espy team, you may ask: "so what?". Well, Espy is not an ordinary fashion boutique where you just walk-in, and fulfill your "shopping your feelings" moment. In fact, Espy do more just that; it provides an experience, whether if it's educational in fashion labels and beauty products or to share knowledge about styling and fashion trends.

The whole concept of Espy is to build a positive relationship with the customer by understanding their needs. Espy also provides service to help their clients to find their most appropriate products at an affordable price. In addition, they promote fashion labels that are not well recognized in the community.

The grand re-opening night starts out with a red carpet event and models showcasing Espy products. The room was packed with guests, giving a great opportunity to mingle with new people.

I am so pleased that correspondent KO was able to represent Binzento Vincente to cover some of the fashion events at the New York Fashion Week. She was working diligently to scope details from specific designers in New York while I was also putting extra effort in trying to find interesting stories in YYC to cover.

Subsequent to the Suno collection, KO attended the Monique Lhuillier S/S 2012 fashion show along with our new photographer Rania. They spotted quite a few Fashionista on the street of NYC as they stroll along in their outfits/accessories by Moschino, Alice and Olivia and Alexander McQueen and enter one of the most spectacular fashion shows by Monique Luiller.

Monique Lhuillier is most prominant for her bridal fashions design. Born in the Philippine, her talent had gained her success in fashion industry and acknowledged by some of Hollywood’s A-listed celebrities. In 2006, she also won a Medal of Honor from the Philippine president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for her extraordinary work.

Her S/S collection attracted many celebrities including Eddie Cibrian with Leanne Rimes, Rose McGowan, Mandy Moore and Julianne Hough.

When I first saw the collection, three words that I can think of to describe it were: “glamorous”, “fresh” and “confident”. Monique had expanded herself as an expert in bridal dress to a fabulous designer of cocktail dresses. The 1950’s silhouette mostly inspired the collection. The use of bright primary colors: red, blue and yellow gave these dresses a “fresh” accent. Added was the simple use of black and white contrast to highlight the beautiful figure of the models. The dresses also made the ladies looked chic with “confident”, youthful and elegant.

The S/S 2012 of Monique Luillier could be considered as an “all purpose” collection. You can’t go wrong wearing these dress at red-carpet event, cocktail parties or even just…wear them during the day, just because you feel “glamorous”.

(2) Fairchild Television/TVB Celebrities Fans Party 2011

Speaking of celebrities, I also met a few here in YYC during the time KO was covering NYFW. If you follow Hong Kong/Chinese entertainment, or watch their TV drama series, you would definitely know them. Matthew Ko, Joyce Tang and Queenie Chu from Hong Kong Television Broadcast (TVB) came last week in Canada to meet fans and promote their upcoming TV series aired on Fairchild Television. YYC was their last stop of the tour. Binzento Vincente, along with Mary from Fairchild TV Vancouver and Hubert hosted live at Jack Singer Concert Hall. There was a press conference, and numerous fans showed up for autographs and photos. The show was overall a success, all three stars: Matthew, Joyce and Queenie were really friendly and gave YYC audience one of the most memorable experience.

Binzento Vincente & Carlos Douh

YouTube sensation Carlos Douh (known for his famous YouTube channel segments: Learning Cantonese with Carlosdouh! from Vancouver was also a special guest at the event. His segment was one of the most entertaining parts of the night. Although I knew Carlos have a huge fan base in Vancouver and Hong Kong, but I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw so many YYC fans came up to him and asked him for photos/autographs. “Carlos! I totally felt I was being overshadowed when I stood beside you! lol..” Carlos and I had a great time hanging out that day; we even talked about some of his new YouTube video ideas. I can’t wait for his return to YYC.

(3) Calgary International Film Festival

September 23^rd to October 2^nd is the annual Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF). Binzento Vincente and his +1, KO were invited to the CIFF Media Insider Event at Wurst couple days ago.

(4) Congratulations to Adolfo Sanchez

Everyone has been asking me…"Where did you get the bling-cassette tape necklace?" In fact, Hong Kong actress Queenie Chu asked me during the show at backstage "where you got it from?" and "who was the designer?" The answer to that question is none other than fab Adolfo Sanchez. LA, California based Adolfo had launched his collection before in YYC a year ago.

Recently, Adolfo Sanchez had been appointed by Marina Zelner, founder of plus size label Queen Grace Collection, to be the new creative director!

"Queen Grace Collection has experienced unprecedented growth in the industry," said Zelner. "We wanted an amazing, high-fashion designer working for the brand that shared our vision of empowering women and celebrating their strengths - no matter what size. We are thrilled to be working with him."

Suno S/S 2012 - New York Fashion Week: A Modern Fairytale Collection

Correspondent KO for Binzento Vincente was on an assignment last week to New York Fashion Week. As I mentioned from my previous post, we will be covering S/S 2012 collection from Suno.

Ms. KO and fashionista Rania attended the Suno runway show at Milk, while I was attending the Fabricated event here at YYC. We were busy texting eachother via our WhatsApp detailing each of our events as the night went on.

Suno, having been nominated recently for the CDFA/Vogue Fashion Fund, segregated itself from their usual colorful textiles and vibrant prints to something more neutral and softer tone.

Known for their intense visual effect, designers of Suno, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty have launched a more functional collection this season.

The 40’s and 60’s looks were evident. Though not surprising, their expertise in fabric could be seen in each of the pieces.

A blend of cultural elements, a signature of Suno, was retained. This collection had set the standard based on functionality, and could gain wider audience or buyers.

Plaid shirts, strapped floral dresses, and long loose-fitted pants gave models a ladylike character as they walked gracefully along the runway. The simple make-up and unified hair styles were good choices not to steal the focus of the collection.

With the constant bache, sky blue and white combinations in the collection, a sudden metallic red/gold layer in one of the pieces triggered an eclectic sense from the mono-toned effect. I especially liked the gown piece that looked very similar to a Chinese “QiPao”. It reminded me of scenes inspired by the 40's from film director Wong Kar Wai and his movies "In the Mood of Love" and "2046".

KO got to meet Suno designers and I was thrilled she represented Binzento Vincente. They even took a picture! I was surprised to see this collection doesn't have the usual Suno complex colourful styles, but their focus on creating a graceful and modern twist in this fairytale-like collection made me enjoy it none-the-less.

PS: The red necklace KO was wearing to New York Fashion Week was by our YYC's very own Anne b. Accessories. Her necklace got lots of attention and was photographed by attendees at the fashion week. Great news for Anne b. and our local designers!!

Fabricated Fashion Show

The highly anticipated Fabricated Fashion Show happened Thursday night at Theatre Junction, YYC Calgary. This sold out show was definitely one of the most talked-about fashion event this month. The venue was completely packed with some of the most important people in the local fashion industry. I was excited to see my old friends, and also met new ones as well.

I arrived at the venue with my friend Stephanie. She looked absolutely gorgeous wearing a necklace piece by Anne b. Accessories.

The night showcased current collections from a total of six boutiques/designers:

1. Mealan Boutique: I was quite pleased to see some eclectic colours at the opening show by Mealan. The use of bright primary colours such as red and yellow welcomes autumn with a smile. PS: I loved the hair and make-up on these models.

2. Ga.Za.Ba Milano: As the name implied, this boutique carried Italian-styled fashion specifically for menswear. Got lots of 80's shoulder pad blazers and studded jackets. Bad boys Italian.

3. Empire Collection: A very safe and mainstream collection was shown, and it's not exactly my taste. This was not one of the best selections of Empire Collection. Their website however, has more interesting designs.

4. Chantel Traub: At this point of the show, I was finally relieved to see some spring/summer fashion (it was suppose to be S/S 2012 afterall), especially by independent designers. Chantel Traub hand painted and silkscreened her own fabrics to create unique designs. I liked how it had a softer-tone with these clothing, which could complement well with the spring vibe. I especially recommend the long blue dress in her finale; very elegant.

5. Chi Chi Couture: I like Chi Chi Couture, not particular their fashion, but I admired the fact that they really stick to their vision as a brand. I'd been to several Chi Chi Couture shows and found good consistency. Holly Allen always provide some of the most creative and unique accessory pieces, which made Chi Chi Couture distinct from other labels/boutiques. I also liked in this collection Chi Chi lived up to being "She She" :)

6. N.R.T. Fashions: The fashion show ended with Nicole Rita Tomney's N.R.T. Fashions. She was one of the reasons why I came to Fabricated. Avant garde styles persisted in this collection. N.R.T. Fashions also added a very dark-tone street-punk flare. The finale piece (the roses dress) left behind the most memorable moment of the night.

The Fabulous People at Fabricated:

I would have to bluntly say that I <3 the people and guests at the event more than the actual fashion show. Fabricated wasn't exactly what I expected, mainly because of the fashion pieces on the runway weren't exactly next season's. However, organizing an event like this is never easy and I truly think that "The Fabricated Team" really brought us a great party. I like to sincerely thank you Fabricated for your hard work and invitation to be part of this fun night. I love you guys so Please keep it up!!

Suno at New York Fashion Week/ D.W at YYC Pride 2011/ Interview with Yantara Jiro

Hello! :) I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Holiday. Thankfully with the beautiful weather, major events this weekend ran pretty smoothly.

(1) Suno at New York Fashion Week

My beloved friend/photographer of Binzento Vincente, Katrina Olson (KO), will be on an assignment for this blog and travel all the way to New York City this week to get the latest scoop of the upcoming Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week.

Since Binzento Vincente admires new and up-rising fashion designers, this blog and KO will be specifically covering fashion label: Suno by Max Osterweis, at the New York Fashion Week.

Suno has everything that I love: advant garde styles, vibrant colors, and a mass full of cultural elements. Suno also delivers an artistic vision from the designer, Max Osterweis, who was a screen/film writer before becoming a fashion designer few years ago. No wonder even Michelle Obama picked his collection.

As a frequent traveler to Kenya, Africa, Mr. Osterweis collected the local textiles and fabrics, and by combining the Kenyan cultural element, he transformed their fashion into something modern and artistic.

In addition to the African inspired theme, I can sense that there are other familiar elements incorporated into Suno’s designs. These elements include Japanese styles that very much reminded me of Issey Miyake back in the old days, retro 70’s bohemian look and a hint of British/Euro edges.

I cannot wait to hear what KO comes back with at the New York Fashion Week with Suno. KO will also have some mingling time with Mr. Osterweis. This blog is fortunate to be able to cover the story. :)

(2) D.W – The Official Clothier for YYC Pride 2011

Past Sunday was the 2011 Pride weekend in YYC. This had to be one of the biggest pride events in history thus far in Calgary. This definitely proved the city had grown geographically AND liberality. Mayor Nenshi was the first city mayor that participated event, and Calgarians were proud to have such an open-minded leader in the city.

D.W Designs was the official clothing supplier for this year’s pride. Binzento Vincente, a big fan of D.W will not miss the opportunity to support. I met D.W designer Daryl White, wearing the custom made “D.W for Binzento” jean vest, at his T-shirt booth.

(3) Meeting and interview with fashionable vocal healer: Yantara Jiro

Sunday I also met up with an inspirational speaker/vocal healer: Yantara Jiro. Jiro travelled all over the world and at least ten different countries a year to give inspirational speeches and one-on-one consultation for people who were interested in vocal healings. His philosophy was that "music and sounds are a form of reflection of consciousness". He hopes that through sounds, he could help people to cope with stress and difficult matters in life and bring a sense of peace in mind, heart and spirit.

Needless to say, Jiro is one of the most fashionable inspirational speakers I’d met. Even when he went horseback riding in Banff, got some pretty shots. He said that he loves Japanese fashion and usually shop there during his visits. He also mentioned that he had plans on recording a music album in Japan in the near future.

"The Dong Show" Art Exhibition/ Burberry Body Eau de Parfum & the Nude Line/ Upcoming YYC Events

1) "The Dong Show" Art Exhibition

In support and celebrating Calgary’s annual Pride week, Stoneworx Gallery at Art Central put together an art exhibition: “The Dong Show”, which will run through the month of September.

As the name implied, “The Dong Show” is an exhibition of “male extravaganza” in various art forms: paintings, photography, sculpture, and woodwork are all seen in this exhibition.

Tonight was the opening night of the art exhibition, and many guests attended to get a glimpse of the male anatomy (in an artistic way). Our local fashionista Domingo was the guest bartender tonight. He poured wine and made specialty drinks for guests to enjoy along with some delicate catering snacks.

The famous “Dong Show” poster boy Bradley Swayze from SHIFT Model was also there to meet and greet along with fab PR/artist Sabrina May. It’s always nice to see familiar faces in an event such as this one, like the lovely ladies from blog: Insert Calgary. I got to know them better this time, and I am sure I will be seeing them more and more in future events.

“The Dong Show” showcased artwork from five local artists: Doug McKinnon, Lisa Heinricks, Daniel Audet, Tobias Luttmer and Alicia Hoogveld. I was especially drawn to Alicia Hoogveld’s photography work. The work contained female body forms with strap-on wrapped around the thighs. I think it played well with the theme of gender equality that females take on the role as a male. It also gave me the sense of male dominance being represented by the female anatomy. Alicia said this collection of work was her first time working with nude models. She is definitely building an interest working with the human body and will continue to explore this aspect in photography.

Leather bracelets and unique belt buckle/accessories designed by Lisa Heinricks were also quite interesting. Bradley Swayze was asked to model some of the buckles on the spot :)

2) Burberry Body Eau de Parfum & the Nude Line

KO on assignment for Binzento Vincente September first two thousand and eleven in Burberry Chinook Centre for the launch of the Burberry Body Eau de Parfum and the Nude line that complimented the fragrance launch. The fragrance which is a lovely feminine floral scent contains notes of peach, iris, and predominantly rose. The EDP comes in a 30ml, 50ml and 100ml ranging from $75-$115 CDN. From the Nude line, Stephanie tried on the Lace Trench which looked stunning on her. The cut is traditional, but the lace make this piece a real statement coat for Fall 2011. The Nude line was released today at the Calgary Chinook location, and more pieces from the collection will be arriving in days to come.

Fairchild TV Celebrities/ TVB Fans Meet & Greet September 10th 2011

Every year, Fairchild Television Canada in collaboration with Hong Kong Television Broadcast (TVB), host a celebrities/fans meet and greet event. This year, four of the up and rising TVB Hong Kong talents/actors/actresses will arrive Canada in September for the 2011 Canadian tour. Calgary show date is on September 10th. Binzento Vincente affiliated with Fairchild TV will be one of the live hosts/MCs for this event. The four TVB talents are:

Matthew Ko; Maggie Cheung

Joyce Kwok; Queenie Chu

In addition to TVB artistes, YouTube sensation Carlos Douh will be that night's special guest. Carlos have earned a HUGE fan base in Canada (especially among the Chinese-Canadians), Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.

His YouTube channel: Learning Chinese With: Carlos Douh! has a total over 1 million hits. That's right, a white guy speaking Cantonese (Chinese). As a Cantonese speaker myself, I have to say: he is almost better than me! :p

PARKLUXE Fashion Show happened at the Winter Garden, Jamieson Place last weekend in YYC. The event featured four diverse local designers who showcased their high-end fashion craftsmanships and their designing talents.

The night began with a cocktail party and an opportunity to mingle with some of the most passionate people in the industry. It was a special night indeed because I saw many unfamiliar faces, which implied to me that there is an increase of awareness to local fashions. This also proves the local fashion industry has not yet been saturated and certainly there is still a growth potential.

It was long since all my lovely fashionista friends gathered in one event. They all looked beautiful that night (some may need to thank the Blo Dry Bar) and I was really happy to see them.

I considered Anne b. as one of my good friends. She always stands out in fashion shows with perfection. Her use of natural elements in accessories was the form of beauty itself.

Favourite piece: Red matching resin necklace/bracelet with an ethnic/cultural touch.

The 2nd designer of the night was: Lara Presber

To be honest, that was the first time I experience Lara Presber's work. I really enjoyed the fact that the designs were really elegantly structured. The aspect of "power" spoke for itself in her designs, but at the same time, the feminine quality was reserved.

Favourite piece: Turquoise-blue long coat with Grey shoulder patch.

The 3rd designer of the night: Bridget Bergman

Very chic! I loved the Paris-inspired look. The designs really brought out what modern women were all about. The little hats gave it a sassy/artsy touch.

Favourite piece: Big-V neck black jacket with the Red artist cap.

The last designer of the night was well worth the wait: Caitlin Power

Caitlin have certainly earned her name in Canadian fashion. I've always loved her work since Alberta Fashion Week two years ago. A detailed use of leather and fabric brought us the elegant yet very edgy style. Girls in Caitlin Power are definitely no ordinary girls, I now call them: Danger Girls :)

Favourite piece: Army green Leather dress (it's golden!)

My artistic and talented friend/photographer/PR Katrina Olson was wearing one of Caitlin's design that night. She was absolutely stunning!!

I was overall VERY impressed with PARKLUXE. Park did a really great job organizing this event with a beautifully decorated venue. I also liked the fact that the runway was long enough for the crowd to carefully examine or just enjoy each runway piece. Another thing I praised about the PARKLUXE was although all four designers came from various backgrounds, the show was very cohesive in terms of styles and tastes.

…and having a "after-party" just down the escalator at Ki Modern Japanese Restaurant was a smart idea. Not only it was close in proximity, Ki represented what a posh YYC restaurant looked like. PARKLUXE, I give you two thumbs up.

Blo Dry Bar Opens in Calgary/ Paige Denim at Holt Renfrew: Designer Paige-Adams Geller visits YYC

Started in Vancouver, Canada, the entire concept of “Blo Dry Bar” is simple but SMART. An example scenario: you have a romantic dinner date at 7:00, but you can't leave work until 5:00, and you really don’t want to fight the traffic home to get your hair done and pretty yourself. I see the HUGE benefit of having a “Blo Dry Bar” around the corner to give anyone in a rush a quick, affordable runway style so they can impress the date with their fabulous hair and also not having to worry about doing the "Blo job" themselves.

Blo is so popular that it had already “blo-wn” to various parts of British Columbia, Ontario, California, Texas and now Alberta.

I was there at the Calgary’s new Blo pre-opening media day, and of course many of the YYC’s most influential fashion bloggers: Diva Lounge, Lions Lace Lattes, Mr. Fabulous, and Twenty Something Online also attended.

PINK is BLO and BLO is PINK, so it’s no surprise that Calgary’s Blo is pinkalicious. I am sure this is one of Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) favorite hubs. Ladies there were friendly. They offered me a head massage, wash and style.

Being a part of Blo requires Blo’s official education, to ensure every stylist knows what they are doing and techniques are standardize.

I really like the idea of Blo so much that when I knew it is coming to Calgary, I forwarded my Fairchild TV colleagues to do some TV spot coverage.

2. Paige Denim: Jeans that shapes your body

When we start to think it is getting harder and harder to find quality denim jeans, then we think again, there is Paige Denim: Made in USA.

Holt Renfrew, Calgary hosted a special Paige Denim event showcasing some of the finest denim jeans by this label. Designer of Paige Denim: Paige Adams-Geller was at the event to give her most personal style advice to her fans.

Paige established her status as one of the most-requested fit models for the hottest denim brands. Being a fashion model herself, she has the body figure to look beautiful in anything. However, not of us are "blessed with the perfect genes" Paige said "But we are bringing you the next best thing: perfect jeans". The designs of these denims target areas of the body that lengthens your legs and slenderize hips and thighs.

Paige told me that Paige Denims were designed and modelled by her. She wanted these jeans to emphasize the shape of the body and brings out the beautiful legs. I loved the pair of Paige Denim she was wearing with the double zippers on both sides, a part of the "Super Rebellious" collection/style. Others that caught my eyes were "Jadyn-Sandpiper" for women and "Drexel-Slater" for men.

This was Paige's first time in Calgary, and I am glad she said she's enjoying it so far, but unfortunately she couldn't stay longer to experience Banff and other national parks near the city. Growing from Alaska, Paige said she loves the nature and wilderness. She was very friendly and brought a great energy to the store that day.

Bano & eeMee Behind the Scenes Fashion Lookbook 2012/ Upcoming and Exciting Events in YYC

The fashion scene in Calgary evidently evolved over the last few years. We can see an increasing number of local designers began to challenge their comfort zone and spurring their talents into our, more or less, conservative community.

Although some designers made their decisions to stay in this city to continue their passions in fashion, many have left to other more prominent fashion capitals to pursue their career. With that being said, it is uncommon to find designers that would migrate from a large fashion playground to a less fashion-liberated community. However, we should never doubt any possibility, because Boston designer Aleem Arif and his fashion label Bano & eeMee is the perfect example of our city's "fashion import".

I first met Aleem during the F/W 2011 Alberta Fashion Week. It was not until last week during his S/S 2012 photoshoot campaign I was able to visualize his collection. It was very thoughtful of Aleem to welcomed me go behind-the-scenes of their photoshoot. He also introduced me to his work, where I could view each of the pieces in detail.

Aleem’s mother, who was also a fashion designer, taught Aleem the basics of fabric and sewing and the process of designing for a clothier. Combining his background and knowledge in business, Aleem decided to come to Calgary, hoping to contribute and prosper the local fashion scene.

Aleem’s inspiration was influenced by the ethnic and multicultural energy, which often can be found in Bano & eeMee. When I initally saw Bano & eeMee collection, it reminded me of a feminine bohemian style that expels a sense of peacefulness. Most designs are very simple, but I do feel there are enough elements to express the meaning of culture in each garment.

It was a fun photoshoot day, adding to the beautiful weather outside. Everyone worked hard to be on schedule and the photographers/models did an excellent job.

“Kouklitas” by Andrew Yang: New York’s Finest Translation of Fashion into Playfulness

This time in New York, other than visiting the Alexander McQueen exhibition, another major reason why I travelled there was to pick up a custom made “Kouklita” designed by Andrew Yang.

“Kouklitas”, are extraordinary and innovative 27” rag dolls designed and hand-made by the talented Andrew Yang.

What makes these rag dolls so special is that they are beautifully dressed in detailed runway fashions, like Alexander McQueen, Lanvin, Comme des Garcons, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Celine and Balenciaga. Each Kouklita also displays a unique facial expression, bringing out its character. Both clothing and face paints are all hand made and done by Andrew himself.

In merely 3 years (since 2008), Andrew's Kouklita dolls have already made its way to both fashion and art industries. It was featured in VOGUE MAGAZINE, The New York Times, Doll Reader, DOLLS Magazine, and international publications of Elle, Marie Claire, and Harpers Bazaar. With this kind of publicity, these dolls soon became one of the most sought after “fashion accessories”. In fact, my very first exposure to Andrew’s work was actually in Hong Kong’s Joyce boutique when I visited a while back. Furthermore, his current line of dolls can also be found in Barney’s across America.

From reading various blog posts, I became overwhelmingly interested with Andrew’s work, so I contacted him and requested a custom doll. Andrew and I exchanged emails a few times, and I was very pleased that we shared the same passion and interest.

I wanted my runway Kouklita to be something inspired by me and also unique to Andrew’s current line of work. We both agreed that a Kouklita wearing a Martin Marqiela S/S 2009 collection, “The Wig Coat” might turn out gorgeous. AND indeed, she WAS SPECTACULAR!

I personally paid his studio a little visit to pick up Miss Margiela Kouklita. As soon as I walked in, I can see her sitting on a chair, with Andrew Yang’s dust bag behind her, waiting to come travel with me. Unfortunately, Andrew left on a business trip on a short notice, but I was equally thrilled to meet his studio manager Jillian Carrozza.

We spent a good afternoon chit-chatting, and getting to know eachother. Looking at the studio gives me the opportunity to solidly feel how each Kouklita was born.

Andrew’s stories have been told by me to my colleagues numerous of times. I hope that next time Andrew and I will finally meet and exchange more creative ideas.

Andrew and his “Kouklita-land” teammates are currently busy working on several projects! Not only are they collaborating with clients in Japan, they are also invited to organize an Andrew Yang Kouklitas exhibition in Paris coming this fall. I will try to keep everyone posted on this remarkable event :-)

In the meantime, Miss Margiela Kouklita will live happily at my home :)
