Increased Study Options at Bio-Med for Finals

Based on a request from the AHC Student Consultative Council about the need for more study space in Bio-Med Library during Finals, we have reserved Diehl Hall Room 555 for "deep quiet" or silent study on the following days:

Monday, May 4, 9am - 5pm
Tuesday, May 5, 12-5pm
Wednesday, May 6, 2-5pm
Friday, May 8, 9am-5pm

Monday, May 11, 2-5pm
Tuesday, May 12, 9am-5pm

Reliable H1N1 (swine) flu information

H1N1 Influenza (formerly known as swine flu) has been confirmed in Minnesota, and officials from the Minnesota Department of Health are monitoring the situation closely. For up-to-date general information, plus the most current details related to Minnesota, visit their H1N1 Novel Influenza page. This page includes information for the public, along with information for school staff and information for health care providers regarding specimen collection, submission, and treatment.

Bio-Med Library Flooding Update

On Friday morning, April 17, a cooling hose burst on the Bio-Medical Library's 4th floor in a utility room by the interior elevator. Water from the burst hose first flooded that room, and then cascaded through floors and ceilings onto the second and third floors. No collections were damaged, and public areas were minimally impacted, but water damage to some staff offices was extensive.

Water extraction, air drying and dehumidification proceeded throughout the weekend. Temperatures are being kept a little cooler than usual inside the library in an attempt to minimize any possibility of mold, so you may need to wear an extra layer over the next few days. The 3rd floor library entrance will also be restricted for the next few days, as work crews continue the clean up in that area.

Sponsored by ACRL and Blackwell’s Book Services, the award recognizes the staff of a college, university and community college library for programs that deliver exemplary services and resources to further the educational mission of the institution. The University of Minnesota Libraries, winner of the university category, was praised for developing excellent strategies to successfully transform and rebrand the libraries to secure a highly valued position on campus.

Wireless Access Options

University Networking has replaced our existing wireless access points, which should result in upgrades in speed and security. For affiliated users, there are now two wireless networking options:
• U of M Secure
• U of M
Beside the additional security, an advantage to using the secure network is that once set up, logging on and daily use becomes a bit easier. Self-help directions can be found online at http://www1.umn.edu/wireless/information/login/index.html. Printed instructions are also available for Mac, XP and Vista at the Service Desk, and technical support staff is available to assist you upon request.

Health Sciences Libraries Staffing News

James Beattie, Jr., MLIS, AHIP, was appointed Associate Director for Liaison, Education and Interdisciplinary Services at the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries in December 2008. He was previously Head of Reference and Instructional Services. Jim has his MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin.

Anne Beschnett, MLIS, was appointed Liaison and Outreach Librarian at the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries on February 16, 2009. She was previously a library assistant in the Technical Services Department. Her MLIS is from Dominican University.

Bio-Med Remodels for the Future

The Bio-Medical Library has recently undergone many changes through remodeling and restructuring to better serve both the patrons and the staff who use the library. According to Steven Llewellyn, Head of Access Services at the Bio-Medical Library, the project began by shifting the entire print journal collection, which is over six miles worth of journals, and "by compacting the collection to decrease its footprint by 1,200 shelving sections in recognition of canceled titles, foreign language titles sent to MLAC storage, and the trend to e-resources."

Wireless Expansion

The Bio-Medical Library will be expanding the range of its wireless network. By the end of February 2009, the installation of new wireless radios will expand coverage on:

3rd level by the new seating areas on the south side of the floor
4th level on the east side of the floor
5th level in the Wangensteen Historical Library

New Service for EFS Account Holders

Attention EFS account users! The Bio-Medical Library is introducing a new service! We're joining the new Gopher GOLD™ Departmental Copy Card program, which is already in use by all other University Libraries.

What is it? It’s like a credit card tied to your departmental budget. Charge copies and prints at any University Library, some University Printing Services locations and University computer labs, and your department will be billed at the end of the month.

IHI Construction on 3rd Floor

Construction Update (11/21/08):

The 3rd floor (street-level) entrance to the Bio-Medical Library will be closed on Saturday, November 22. Patrons can enter the library via the 2nd floor (tunnel-level) entrance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Bio-Medical Library seeks to develop new partnerships within the Academic Health Center, so has cleared the north side of the 3rd floor of Diehl Hall to house office space for the Institute for Health Informatics (IHI).

Open Access Day is October 14, 2008

Open Access is a growing international movement that encourages the unrestricted sharing of research results with everyone, everywhere, for the advancement and enjoyment of science and society. Open-access journals and archives make research freely accessible online, without the traditional expensive subscription barriers that limit the reach of research.

The goal of Open Access Day is to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access within the international higher education community and the general public. The founding partners are SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), Students for FreeCulture, and the Public Library of Science.
