‘Twas the night before Christmas and all thru the house,
Not a specimen was stirring, not even a louse.
The test tubes were capped and the rat cages closed,
The mold cultures fuzzy, the mice in repose.
The oven kept warm the ebola and pox,
I still need to locate my only clean socks...
But that has to wait till tomorrow, I know;
My buggies still need that much more time to grow.

When from the kitchen came a massive explosion,
I leapt from my bed in perpetual motion.
Grabbing my lab coat I pulled on my pants,
Struggling into them a sick sort of dance.
With fury and haste I put on a shirt,
Running out of the bedroom on feet black with dirt.
Buttoning my lab coat and donning a mask,
I ran into the kitchen holding an Erlenmeyer flask.

I nearly passed out when the man who I saw,
dressed in containment gear sealed without flaw,
Held high a huge sack with his arm stiff and straight,
I could tell he must have a hard time with his weight.
Through the mike from his suit he said without pause,
"Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas, I'm Hanta Claus!"
Over his shoulder he hefted the sack,
We walked into the living room, I offered a snack.
He took it and smiled, placed the sack by my bench,
Instantly I noticed the Clostridium stench.
Brimming with joy, I cried out with glee,
"Did you bring all of these germies for me?"
"Oh yes," said Hanta, "I must show propriety;
By bringing you microbes, I'm saving society.
"You are the only one who loves these diseases.
Therefore I'm glad to oblige who it pleases."

Delirious with excitement I sat by his side
While he gave me a year's stock of microscope slides,
And pasteur pipettes, drug resistant bacteria,
Such as staph, strep and cultures from the genus Neisseria.

The gleam in my eyes caused the house to be lit,
The moment he gave me a gram-staining kit,
Clostridium tetani, perfringens and sporogenes,
Salmonella typhi and Streptococcus pyogenes!
Plus viruses known to produce hepatitis,
Herpes, and rabies, yellow fever and meningitis!
But that was not all, he had parasites too,
Plasmodia, trypanosomes and schistosomes true!
Tapeworms and roundworms, plague-carrying fleas.
How sincerely generous, Hanta did aim to please!

At long last he said he must now go away,
His sled was experiencing radioactive decay.
"Thanks for the presents," I said, shaking his hand,
"They'll keep me off the streets, you understand."

Hanta Claus smiled and bid me goodnight,
Shouting "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good blight!"

Scientists having fun

You may not realize it, but scientists like to have fun, too. Just because they wear those fancy white lab coats and spend their days talking about the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins from mammalian cell culture doesn't mean scientists don't like to get together, have fun and drink a couple of beers.

Hence, BioBeers East has quickly become a must-attend event for scientists working and living in Frederick County. What is BioBeers East, you ask? BioBeers East is the brainchild of Jim Hardy of Hemacell Perfusion and Jim Hartley, a principal investigator for the National Cancer Institute. Like many great scientific discoveries, BioBeers is the local take-off of someone else's idea. A couple of years ago, Hartley and Hardy were attending a happy hour at the Frederick Innovative Technology Center and were discussing a means to nurture the biotechnology community in Frederick County. After starting a blog, the pair decided to "borrow" the BioBeers model from the Colorado group. In Colorado, they discovered a successful model for fostering collaboration in the Colorado bioscience community by using local microbrews to bring together like-minded bio-entrepreneurs to share ideas, cultivate business relationships and build lifelong friendships. Hartley and Hardy liked the idea.

After all, as Hardy puts it, "brewing is quintessential biotech." A quick e-mail for permission later, BioBeers East was born. What has happened to BioBeers East over the last couple of years is the (ideal) model any good entrepreneur follows: Find a need, fill it and watch the endeavor grow. Started in the spring of 2008, the first BioBeers East was a small, informal meeting with a handful of attendees. However, as word got out, attendance grew from a few pioneers to a regular group of 85 to 125, and events have grown in frequency from quarterly to every other month. The Flying Dog Brewery is now the regular location for BioBeers East, providing interesting tours, appropriate space for scientific presentations and, of course, great beer. We are talking about scientists.

So who are these people who want to mix science with beer? They are the masses with unmet needs that Hardy and Hartley envisioned when they came up with the idea for BioBeers East. Recognizing that Maryland's bioscience community trends toward Montgomery County (and more recently, and to a lesser degree, Baltimore), BioBeers East was intended to "foster, in an informal and relaxed setting, the exchange of ideas, business opportunities and general mischief and promote Frederick County as the exclusive Biocluster in the world!"

At first, BioBeers East acted as a reunion of sorts for the numerous former Life Technologies employees spread throughout the four corners by the Invitrogen acquisition in late 2000. However, as word got out, BioBeers East was successful in drawing others from numerous local institutions and companies, such as the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, SAIC-Frederick and ImQuest BioSciences (the official chicken wing sponsor) to name a few, as well as Frederick County residents on their way home from biotech jobs in Baltimore or Bethesda.

So how can you attend one of these crazy events you didn't even know existed? The place to start is Hardy's excellent Frederick County Biotech Community blog, at fredcobio.wordpress.com, or find BioBeers East on LinkedIn. There you will see that the next installment of BioBeers East will be on Nov. 13 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Flying Dog Brewery. All you have to do is show up, have one of Flying Dog's award-winning beers, and learn a little about the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins or whatever other topic may be on tap.

It’s Back-to-School & Back-to-Denver for BioBeers. We hope the summer was a fruitful time for you. Needless to say we are excited to kick-off ( yet) another exciting season of BioBeers, coming to you from live from high above the Mile High City – 27 floors high to be exact – at the swanky Peaks Lounge in the Hyatt Regency – Denver.

Equally as exciting will be the preface to BioBeers,that is the first annual Rocky Mountain Life Science Investor Conference! The Conference features investors from San Fran to Boston and presenting companies not only from here in Colorado (like…Beacon Biotechnology, Biodesix, BiOptix, GlobeImmune, MyoCept and ValveXchange, to name a few) but also from Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Montana (like…Axial Biotech, Castle Biosciences, LigoCyte Pharmaceuticals, Medipacs, NanoMR and Numira Biosciences, to name a few).

What do I do?

Currently, I am completing graduate work at CU Boulder reproductive neuroendocrinology lab in the Integrative Physiology department. I have spent the last several years studying the neurotrophic effects of fibroblast growth factors on the fate specification, migration, and post-natal maintenance of GnRH neurons. I am also teaching human anatomy lab sections at CU and working on the Front Range Neuroscience Group meeting which will take place in December 2008. My passion lies in the communication of science through the marketing of ideas and the pedagogical dissemination of information. I am attracted to science application and biomedical technologies, and am drawn to social interactions and people. In December I will be graduating and am excited for the adventures that the future will bring!

Why do I spend my valuable time at BioBeers?

I am dedicated to people and science and am energized by bringing the two together under one roof – especially with a beer in hand! Coming from the research bench, I feel that there is a need for translational communication between the business and clinical/research worlds. BioBeers brings together people from all bioscience related fields who share a common interest in science for the purpose of exchanging ideas and information. With Colorado beginning to make its debut in the world of Biotechnology and bio-based businesses, BioBeers is offering a unique opportunity for people to be on the cutting edge of this growth through facilitating business and interpersonal connections.

My vision of the Colorado life science landscape 2008-2018

I have seen Colorado undergo significant changes in the past ten years. With its fresh and vivacious energy, Colorado is a burgeoning post hold for new ideas, technologies, and bio-science industries. In the next decade, I project Colorado defining itself through the continued expansion of biomedical, biotechnological, and green industries. According to the Colorado Bioscience Association, there are currently 380 bioscience companies in Colorado, a number that is seeding the ground for industry growth and possibility. Now is an optimal time to get acquainted with the people and companies that will shape Colorado’s biotech landscape in the future.

2008 has been a fantastic year for BioBeers. Business partnerships, scientific collaborations, hirings and importantly…friendships continue to be forged at these informal gatherings. The October event welcomed over 75 attendees. The BioBeers community experienced a wonderful growth trajectory in our first year of business and continues to play ever expanding host to a diverse array of Colorado bioscience industry professionals representing functions such as practicing physicians and medical officers, Ph.D. scientists, entrepreneurs, angel investors, executive leaders, biomedical engineers, business development, commercialization, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, legal and finance experts; not to mention growing interest and representation from MS, MD, PhD and MBA students (and undergrads, who are of legal drinking age, of course). Whether you are a scientist looking to commercialize a breakthrough medical discovery, a student or young professional looking to build a career in the local bioscience community, a bioentrepreneur or executive looking to recruit Colorado talent, or you just like beer and good conversation please come join us at the next BioBeers!

For the November event BioBeers continues its support of the Colorado Bioscience Association's 2008 BioWest Conference and Expo. Be sure to register (here) for this fantastic event featuring top-tier speakers such as Steven Burrill and Guy Kawasaki, the Venture Showcase competition, hear unique bioscience industry perspectives from Medtronic, Covidien and Ernst & Young and don’t forget Colorado’s biggest bioscience job fair, all just to name a few of the exciting events stuffed into an action packed two days.

Can you believe…It’s Back-to-School BioBeers! Wow, where did the summer go? BioBeers enjoyed her summer retreat and is now energized as ever and ready to get back to it by hosting a gala event at the legendary Cruise Room inside LoDo’s historic Oxford Hotel.

Frozen in time since the Cruise Room art deco facelift was competed in 1933, this sassy watering hole was fashioned after one of the lounges on the Queen Mary and opened with fanfare the day after prohibition was repealed.

BioBeers is locked and loaded for Tuesday 29 April at our new start time of 6:00pm. Now there has been some debate about where to hold this months BioBeers, so we elected to settle the question the democratic way by asking you all to vote early and vote often on both BioBeers.com and CLSDF.com. The finally tally came up:

Those sentient to the hops and barley flowing along Pearl St. may be familiar with the Mountain Sun or perhaps the Colorado Kind Java Porter served up at the Sun’s SOBO cousin, the Southern Sun. Well despite Denver tallying the most votes, we are efforting to bring a little Boulder to Denver by meeting at the recently opened Vine Street Pub (which completes the Mountain Sun trifecta).

And the BioBeers beat marches on in March at the Milwaukee Street Tavern. Do you speak Cherry Creek? That’s right the Colorado BioBeers tour continues, pulling in next to the Milwaukee Street Tavern station, 31 March 7:30pm. This month we are including FREE name tags! Bonus! And suitable for framing too after the event.

It is exciting to see this event grow, so much so that name tags are now considered value-add. Participation has come from Ph.D. and MBA students all the way up to company CEO’s and representation from just about every position in between. But, BioBeers can not do it simply on its own…that’s right, it is up to you, dear Colorado bio-networker, to help spread the word.

What Do I Do?

I currently work full-time for Boston Strategic Partners, a boutique pharmaceutical / biotech consulting company. In addition, I am one of the five inaugural Fellows of the Colorado Bioentrepreneurship Program (CBP). As part of the program, we are given the opportunity to spend 3 months with the CU Tech Transfer Office, 3 months with Fitzsimons BioBusiness Partners, and 6 months with a local company. For my FBBp and local company rotation, I have had the opportunity to work with Dan Stinchcomb at Inviragen. The CBP has given me the chance to get some hands on experience with some of the issues that start-up ventures encounter. This has been a perfect complement to my work with Boston Strategic Partners, as these clients are typically ‘big pharma’ and ‘big biotech’.

Experience

Graduate Research – HIV vaccine development in the laboratory of Dr. Norman Letvin
Post-doctoral – Protein crystallography and apoptosis in the laboratory of Drs. Kappler and Marrack at National Jewish Medical and Research Center
Consulting experience – Lead Boston Strategic Partners writing practice with several years of clinical publication and consulting experience.

Experience in clinical publications include the economic burden of chronic kidney disease, description of a newly developed hepatitis B virus immunoassay, evaluation of a highly sensitive estradiol immunoassay, and assessment of a high-throughput clinical chemistry and immunoassay instrument. Why do I spend my valuable time at BioBeers?

There are 4 reasons, in no particular order:

BioBeers is a an excellent opportunity for me to meet and learn from local entrepreneurs
I primarily work from home and need any excuse to get out of the house and socialize
I like beer
Adam told the CBP Fellows that we didn’t have a choice

My vision of the Colorado life science landscape 2008-2018

I spent 5 years in Boston, a Mecca for biotechnology, and while I realistically don’t foresee Colorado reaching the same level as Boston, I do think it can become a great source of innovation and incubation of new ideas and new companies.

Now That Was Fun!

Wow…BioWest, Christmas Party and BioBeers all rolled into one fun and late evening! Our group grew by leaps and bounds attracting some 40+ folks. It was great to see a wonderful mix of Ph.D. and MBA students, faculty, bio-preneurs, start-up junkies and folks from biotech and pharma rubbing elbows while throwing back a few eggnog’s, why even Santa got in the BioBeers mix! I tried to post some videos from the evening but counsel recommended immediate removal based upon the series of FCC inquiries suggesting obvious infractions of the Telecommunication and Decency Act of 1996.

So we are now pointing the BioBeers ship towards 2008 and looking to nail down our next date and dance with debauchery. At the moment 10 or 11 January, again in Denver, appear to be bubbling to the surface. More on that later…
