So nice! The picture from http://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow.cfm?id=brain-art-shows-off-neuroscience-aesthetic-side and comment:

The brain is a monotone mass of neurons that is often difficult to pick apart, even on a dissection table. Yet through a technique called diffusion MRI, which measures the spread of water molecules through neural tissue, researchers can add revealing color to the maze of connections.

Ultra-strong magnetic fields on the order of 7 teslas (about 1,400 times stronger than a refrigerator magnet) manipulate the water molecules along tracks of white matter neurons, breaking the movement into three basic directions.

Left–right tracks of neural tissue are represented by red, front–back tracks by green and top–bottom tracks by blue. Each track winds around in a specific way, lending it a unique color. Functional clusters of white matter emerge as colored regions.

"It's a smart way to transform something so complex into something simple and immediately comprehensible," Margulies says of the diffusion MRI technique. Production of brain neurons (red) generated from adult neural stem cells (green) can alter brain activity patterns underlying depression. Thanks to Leslie Meltzer &
http://med.stanford.edu/mcr/2007/deisseroth-0711.html. Also from the article:

Leslie Meltzer, neurosciences graduate student and co-first author, searched for the cellular basis of these changes in circuitry. An obvious place to start, she said, was to look at the formation of new neurons in the hippocampus, a process that neuroscientists have suggested is at the root of how antidepressants work. What they found was that the growth of new neurons could account for the behavioral improvements seen from treatment as well as the circuitry changes. The converse was not true: Fewer new neurons in that region did not equal depression.
In other words, in their model system, the two states appear to funnel through a common pathway—despite very different cellular mechanisms.

Aggregates were cultured on an adhesive surface and stained for the presence of dextran (green) (a, c) and vimentin (green) (b) to detect intermediary filaments. mCherry expression is displayed in red and the nuclei are stained with Hoechst Dye 33342 (blue). The distribution of the superparamagnetic beads inside cells, after 24 h exposure to the MRI contrast agent Endorem, displays on a DAB-enhanced Prussian blue staining (d) that individual cells can be effectively labeled in this culture model. Scale bars a, b, 25 µm; c10 µm; d 50 µm.

The “Cell Surface-Capturing” (CSC) method enables hundreds of cell-surface proteins to be analyzed simultaneously. In order to produce this image, the proteins at the cell surface were labeled with green dye to make them visible; the cell nuclei are stained blue. (Photo: Wollscheid group/ETH Zurich)

Mouse neuron showing multiple neuritis with fan-shaped growth cones.

Led by Richard Klemke, Ph.D., professor of pathology at UCSD School of Medicine and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, the research team designed a new technology enabling them to, for the first time, isolate and purify neurites – long membrane extensions from the neuron that give rise to axons or dendrites. This technological breakthrough opens the door to understanding how neurites form and differentiate to regenerate neuronal connections and give rise to a functioning network. It also led to the discovery of how two key signaling molecules are regulated by a complex protein network that controls neurite outgrowth. Their study will be published the week of January 28 to February 1 in the on-line, early edition of the journal Proceedings of theNationalAcademy of Science.
Here is a confocal image of the stage-9 hntXE81 mosaic egg chamber. Follicle cells with hnt mutantion (marked by the absence of GFP, shown in green) had smaller nuclei (marked by DAPI staining in blue) and upregulated Ci-155 expression (shown in red) comparing to the adjacent wild-type cells, indicating that hntmutation causes defects in the mtitotic cycle/endocycle switch and proper downregulation of Hh signaling respectively.

I've found it at http://bio.fsu.edu/~denglab/ There are more cute pictures of cells.

Spindly regulates kinetochore (green) attachment to microtubules (red) during mitosis in C. elegans.

DESAI

The picture from the work about the microtubule-binding machinery of kinetochores (Arshad Desai (Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, University of California, San Diego)). The dynein/dynactin microtubule motor complex is recruited to kinetochores by a conserved coil–coil protein called spindly. Spindly also seems to mediate lateral interactions between unattached kinetochores and microtubules, important for chromosome positioning and segregation during mitosis.
