Santa Claus was a little late with Luigi, this year, due probably to the size of his so long desired bowspirit.

He used some low friction rings by Antal, as you an see in the next pictures.

The last picture shows the ama's end of the lateral shroud with a simple but effective Dyneema "length tuner". Now Rebel seems so aggressive ... makes me think about a medioeval horse ! Here is Luigi trying to calm down the impatient steed:

He's just in need of a good Gennaker; in the meantime, here is the bowsprit in action, everything done safely from the cockpit:

Babbo Natale ha tardato quest anno con Luigi, tutta colpa dell'ingombro del suo bompresso tanto a lungo desiderato, probabilmente. Sono stati usati alcuni anelli ad alto scorrimento della Antal. La sartia laterale prende sulla prua dello scafetto per mezzo un semplice ed efficace "regolatore" in Dyneema ... si può quasi dire che è una bigotta moderna, no ?
Ma quanto è aggressivo adesso Rebel ... mi fa pensare ad un cavallo medioevale; e qui Luigi cerca di calmare il destriero impaziente ! Manca solo un buon gennaker; nel frattempo eccovi il bompresso in azione, tutto manovrato in sicurezza dal pozzetto.
Questo è tutto, ci vediamo presto al mare, buon vento :-)

Last Saturday we met a 20Kn wind from the shore, 25 gusts, flat sea, EXHILARATING ! No time to take photo or movie, sorry; so here's a movie from the week before, a very calm day; the other boat is Mauro's Elan 37 Amelì; enjoy !

Sabato scorso abbiam trovato 20 nodi di vento da terra, con raffiche fino a 25, mare piatto, una goduria ! how do you say "canestrelli" ?

A "canestrello" is the sliding device connecting sail and mast, I can't remember it's english name ... maybe "cursors" ? Anyway, Luigi recently made these ones using a nylor rod (milled by a pro), a couple of bolts and a metal plate:

Here are the involved parts and bare materials, from the store ...

and after the machining; the milling was a little expensive, but the result was very good.

The previous type of "canestrello", a common plastic part from a marine store, was too little, in Luigi opinion; so here are the new ones, ready to receive the main !

Saturday was a long warm morning in the marina, perfect to work at the boat; we did some maintenance jobs to Rebel; then we took a rest and decided to test the cockpit table ... look carefully: it is the hatch door !

The door/table is screwed on a custom metal leg which is screwed in a special recess on the cockpit floor; you mount and unmount everything in a split second ! So you have all the time to eat and drink and talk.

We say: you can't age while your legs are under the table !

A lot of "vegetables" are growing under the floats and the main hull; here Luigi is tring to cut them away using a rope, pulling alternatively from each sides of the float and moving forward at the same time. It works !

Come si dice canestrello in inglese ? Google direbbe scallop solo che poi a ritradurlo in italiano viene pettine che ritradotto in inglese da comb ... un bel casino. Magari qualcuno ha un suggerimento. Forse cursore ? Ad ogni modo, Luigi se ne è autocostruito una scorta, dato che i precedenti, tutti in plastica, non si erano dimostrati all'altezza; erano troppo piccoli, in un certo senso, e la parte metallica del blocco che riceve la stecca della vela finiva per toccare l'albero, in certe condizioni.
Così Luigi ha concepito questo canestrello massiccio costruito attorno ad una estrusione (no, sono stati fresati) in nylon su cui è montato un ... cavallotto in acciaio imbullonato sopra una piattina in alluminio per distribuire lo sforzo.
Abbiamo un po' penato a lavorare sulla randa arrotolata, chinati in pozzetto ... ad un certo punto ci siamo accorti che ci aggiravamo indolenziti e dolenti, con le mani sulla schiena e l'andatura rigida, un po' da vecchietti insomma, ma poi lo spirito di Rebel ci ha scosso e abbiam ritrovato il giovanile ardore. Quindi gambe sotto al tavolo e via alla colazione, con salatini e dolcetti della Fedora, la mia panettiera. Dice il proverbio: non si invecchia con le gambe sotto al tavolo.
A proposito di tavolo, ma avete visto che spettacolo ? Si prende il portello, gli si avvita la speciale gamba e poi si avvita la flangia alla base della gamba nell'apposito ricettacolo in mezzo al pavimento del pozzetto (dove io spesso inciampo) e in un attimo il pozzetto diventa un accogliente angolino per sfamarsi e rilassarsi. Penso si possa anche giocare a carte ! Fare un po' d'ombra con le sartie e le volanti cui connettere i tiranti di una tenda sarà un attimo. Grande barchetta polifunzionale, questo Rebel !
Nel pomeriggio attività antivegetativa con Luigi che ha fatto fare il "giro di chiglia" ad una cima per tagliare un po' di alghe. Esperimento riuscito !

We're using square meters and Kilograms, we apologize with "imperial" users. Wind speed is considered till 25 knots, you should reef if more.

Today I'd like to post in italian language, as I feel a little shy 'cause Ruby is a nice programming language everywhere in the world except in Italy where it means Berlusconi's pasttime. What a shame ...

Poichè è noto che ciò che conta è il viaggio più che l'arrivo, ecco che esiste un metodo per andare dal punto A al punto B sulla superficie terrestre che non è il più breve (ortodromia) ma è quello che attraversa i meridiani sempre con la stessa angolazione; e se si tirasse dritto indefinitivamente oltre il punto B, si finirebbe arrotolati a spirale attorno a uno dei poli, asintoticamente. Questo metodo di navigazione si chiama lossodromia, nota in inglese come rhumb lines, mentre l'ortodromia è il great circle.

Sono abbonato a Bolina ed è appena arrivato il numero di Febbraio; c'è un articolo del bravo Marco Sassu che illustra un metodo grafico per tracciare una rotta lossodromica (lunga al massimo 500 miglia) su carta millimetrata (1mm = 1nm, cioè 1:1852000); è uno spettacolo di semplicità e non riesco a trattenermi dal rendervene partecipi; per impratichirmi ho realizzato io stesso un disegno:

Poniamo di uscire dal molo di Marina di Ravenna e metterci su una rotta di 84°; stiamo andando praticamente a Est; nel disegno siamo su A e ci dirigiamo verso B (lo so, lo so, l'angolo CAB non sembra proprio di 84°, è più sui 40°, ma è un esempio, perdonatemi, è solo un esempio ...).

Con questo sistema grafico, conoscendo le coordinate del punto di partenza, la rotta e la lunghezza del percorso, possiamo calcolare le coordinate del punto di arrivo; al contrario, conoscendo le coordinate di arrivo e partenza possiamo calcolare rotta e lunghezza del percorso; senza fare (quasi) un solo calcolo e usando solo riga e goniometro. Vediamo come tracciare una rotta, allora.

Usando google maps ho visto che il molo di Marina è 44.493326N,12.291577E; Lussin Piccolo è credo 44.636651N,14.247969E. La latitudine media è un po' più di 44.5°, l'incremento di latitudine è 8.6 minuti di ° e l'incremento di longitudine è 117.2 minuti di °; poichè entrambe le coordinate (N e E) crescono, ci troviamo a far rotta nel primo quadrante (tra N ed E); se cala solo la latitudine (N-) siamo nel secondo; se cala solo la longitudine (E-) siamo nel quarto e se calano entrambe siamo nel terzo; bisogna ragionare bene sulla direzione cosiddetta "quadrantale" onde evitare errori di segno.

Avendo quindi le coordinate di arrivo e partenza, che rotta dobbiamo fare e quanto a lungo dobbiamo navigare ? Segnamo il punto di partenza A in basso a sinistra, poichè faremo rotta nel 1° quadrante, andando verso l'alto (N) e verso destra (E). Misuriamo l'incremento di latitudine da A verso l'alto, 1mm per ogni minuto di grado, quindi nel nostro caso 8mm e un po'; qui segniamo il punto C e da qui facciamo passare una linea orizzontale (su cui dopo troveremo B); adesso mettiamo il centro del goniometro sul punto C e lo 0° sulla linea orizzontale; facciamo un punto pari alla latitudine media di 44.5° e tracciamo una linea obliqua su cui adesso troviamo il punto D: esso dista da C 117.2mm cioè l'incremento di longitudine; è quasi fatta: da D scendiamo in verticale e dove incrociamo la linea orizzontale segnamo il punto B; misuriamo la distanza AB: circa 84 mm cioè 84 miglia nautiche da percorrere; misuriamo l'angolo CAB: circa 84°, cioè rotta 84° dal Nord vero.

Riepiloghiamo questo giro ACDB: da A su in verticale per l'incremento di latitudine (1' = 1mm) e siamo a C, poi pieghiamo a destra con un angolo (rispetto all'orizzonte) pari alla latitudine media e andiamo su storti per l'incremento di longitutine (1' = 1mm) e siamo a D; poi torniamo giù dritti e troviamo B alla stessa altezza di C; finito ! Misuriamo la distanza AB (1mm = 1nm) e la rotta CAB dal Nord vero.

Ora mettiamo che si rompa il gps ... conosciamo le coordinate dell'ultima rilevazione, le miglie percorse dal momento del guasto e la rotta attuale dalla quale non ci siamo discostati. Dove siamo ?

La risposta ce la dà il giro ABCD: da A tracciamo facilmente il percorso effettuato AB poichè conosciamo l'inclinazione (la rotta dal Nord vero) e la lunghezza (1nm = 1mm); da B arriviamo a C viaggiando in orizzontale verso sinistra fino a incrociare la verticale che passa per A; misuriamo AC e troviamo l'incremento di latitudine (1mm = 1') quindi possiamo già calcolare la latitudine del punto in cui ci troviamo; occhio a sommare minuti e gradi sessagesimali: a sessanta minuti si riporta 1 grado; calcoliamo la latitudine media e in base a questa tracciamo la linea inclinata che parte da C e prosegue storta fino a D dove taglia la verticale che passa per B; misuriamo la distanza CD e questo è l'incremento di longitudine (1mm = 1'); altra somma ed ecco la longitudine del punto in cui ci troviamo.

Una squadretta non dovrebbe mai mancare a bordo, con carta e matita. Ancora una cosa: l'articolo mostra anche le formule trigonometriche per ricavare matematicamente i dati che qui abbiamo misurato al termine delle nostre acrobazie grafiche, ma se volete conoscerle dovete leggere l'articolo ! Luigi's F-22 Rebel is still in maintenance status, so today we opted for a run with Mauro's Elan 37, Amelì;

Here are Mauro and Luigi, smiling in the wind. In the next photo you'll see your loved blogger Angelo. I had never "driven" a sailbot with the "wheel" before today; it took a little to get used to ! 1K thanks to Mauro for giving me an opportunity to learn something new :-)

What a nice boat, this Elan 37. She has a heating system inside, too. And standing headroom. And a lot a things to make the cruise a pleasure. But she heels a lot ! Ok, compared to a multihull ... ;-)

Look at this elegant blue hull; The interiors are high quality, too.

A couple of hours through the waves were enough for us, due to low temperature, so we packed everything and went home. See you soon !

Houston, we've had a problem

Saturday we went to Marinara to sail on Rebel. Light winds, a smiling sun and a low temperature. As we reached the end of the dams, we switched off the engine and started to raise the main. The halyard was easy in the beginning, but suddently it became hard to pull and then locked completely. In the mean time a change in the wind direction had slapped the sail from side to side. So we tried to lower the mail. No way. It was locked, almost completely raised and locked. That was a problem, a serious one.

We decided to come back to the marina, hoping that the wind would stay constant, 5Kn from NW, so to serve as a brake, as we'd reach the pier. We were lucky. Using the engine in reverse we landed ... almost as an elicopter, hoovering near the piper. Rebel was undamaged, tied to the mooring.

And up Luigi went to the mast head.

He was able to detach sail and hayard, but the halyard stayed locked.

A modification will be implemented on the masthead main pulley to avoid any possible future jam.

connecting rudder and engine

It's a step by step refinement ! This time we talk about engine and rudder.

Luigi found not so pratical to have 2 "handles" to manage during motoring, expecially on close quarters, when mooring and the likes. So he connected engine and rudder using simple metal pieces and a stainless steel tube (or was it a rod ?):

You move the rudder and the engine follow (and viceversa). Nice solution, isn't it ? See it in action:

When it's time to raise the engine and start sailing, the connection is removed in a split second. Unfortunately, the rudder is receiving a great amout of vibrrrrrrrrrrrrrations, not so good, so Luigi will try to insert a "off the shelf" silent-block somewhere to dampen this effect.

Pianpianino le cose migliorano: ad esempio, dover gestire timone e fuoribordo, specie in fase di ormeggio, non era facile, così Luigi ha pensato bene di collegare i due "manici" con due particolari metallici e un tubo in acciaio inox. Il tubo si mette e si toglie in un attimo, solo che passa un sacco di vibrrrrrrrrrrrazioni verso il timone e dopo un quarto d'ora ti si informicolisce la mano; quindi si pensava di infilare un comunissimo silent-block da qualche parte per smorzare il tutto.

La goduria continua e il Rebel diventa sempre meglio :-)

Grazie ai "condomini galleggianti" come questo ripreso qui sopra, adesso bisogna fare a motore tutto il tratto tra i moli di Marina di Ravenna (con le vele giù, se no multa) perchè i bestioni devono poter manovrare in sicurezza ... la gente è amareggiata per questa decisione della Capitaneria e ci si sta organizzando: è in corso una raccolta di firme, credo, per vedere di trovare, insieme alle autorità, una soluzione migliore. Anche perchè il divieto è in forza 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7, ma i barconi evoluiscono solo ogni tanto e con largo anticipo. A me sembra francamente una misura inutilmente restrittiva. Che ne dite ?

When a heavy monohull just floats, slowly inching forward, this trimaran slips around in a magic wind energy transformation, moving itself and almost not the water ... probably Rebel thinks to be a ... "Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor" in ground effect !

Quando un monoscafo si limita a galleggiare, avanzando lentamente un centimetro per volta, questo trimarano scivola intorno trasformando magicamente l'energia del vento, muovendosi senza quasi muovere l'acqua ... va a finire che Rebel pensa di essere un "Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor" in effetto suolo !

Dear fellow builders and Farrier aficionados,
let me share with you these unauthorized (*) 20 secs of video I took today aboard of Rebel, the Farrier F-22 trimaran built by my great friend Luigi Magnani. I can't find the right words to properly explain the feeling that pervaded me, a simple spectator of this event; I can barely imagine the feeling of Luigi, as he begins building confidence with his masterpiece.

To all out there in the middle (or at the very beginning) of a boat building (me included): keep building ! You build a boat and the boat builds you.

*) Luigi is a perfectionist and prefer to show a completely tested boat ... I hope he will not upset for this small "scoop" ... sorry for the very poor quality of the images: I lost the camcorder special firewire cable, so this is the screen of the camcorder captured on my photocamera !

Cari colleghi costruttori e appassionati dei trimarani Farrier,
lasciate che condivida con voi questi 20 secondi di filmato non autorizzato (*) effettuati oggi a bordo di Rebel, il trimarano Farrier F-22 costruito dal mio grande amico Luigi Magnani; non riesco a trovare le parole giuste per descrivere propriamente il sentimento che ha pervaso me, un semplice spettatore, e fatico a immaginare quello che prova Luigi, mentre comincia ad accumulare confidenza col suo capolavoro.

A tutti quelli a mezzo (o proprio all'inizio) della costruzione di una barca (me incluso): continuate a costruire ! Costruisci una barca e lei costruisce te.

*) Luigi è un perfezionista e preferisce mostrare una barca completamente testata ... spero non si arrabbi per questo piccolo scoop ...mi scuso per l'infima qualità delle immagini: è che ho perso il cavo firewire della videocamera e questo è il suo display ripreso dalla mia fotocamera !

Luigi explained to me that the thin water flow exiting from the bottom of the engine case is an indication that the water cooling system is correctly running. I didn't know that ! Simple and effective.
Here is forbidden to exit the marina without the engine running, that is only by sail.
One float extened, Luigi is testing the bimini. Still many small details need to be sorted out before a sail test. In the meantime Luigi is collecting the usual "You built it ... unbelieveble !" from his new neighbor sailers.

New sails under way; same for the outboard engine; if everything goes well, Luigi will splash his F22 Rebel in a month or so; I will be there to take pictures, movies and ... if possible ... test her :-)
