Organized by the Black AF in STEM Collective, the week celebrates the Black birding community and invites more Black people to learn about birds through online activities, workshops, and in-person events. The theme for Black Birders Week 2022 is “Soaring to Greater Heights.” Each day of the week also has its own theme:

Sunday, May 29: #BlackInNature
BirdNote Seeks Development Coordinator

BirdNote Seeks Development Coordinator

BirdNote seeks a creative, thoughtful, and kind individual to serve as our Development Coordinator. The ideal candidate is exceptionally organized and detail oriented, has an understanding of donor relations and customer service principles, and can support BirdNote to increase our fundraising capacity as our listening audience grows.

BirdNote is an independent media organization that produces programs aimed at inspiring people to notice and care about birds. These include our two-minute BirdNote Daily show that airs on NPR affiliate stations across the US and popular longform podcasts, including Bring Birds Back with host Tenijah Hamilton and Threatened with host Ari Daniel. Our estimated audience size is three million and growing.

Starting salary range: $50,000 to $55,000. Includes benefits package with paid time off, employer matching retirement contributions, and medical, dental, disability, and life insurance.

Location: Virtual/remote. This is an exempt, 40-hour per week position with flexibility in scheduling, but required availability during portions of the regular M-F work week. This position may require some occasional travel.

Reporting structure and support: This position reports to BirdNote’s Development Director, Jessica Frantz. This position also works in close partnership with other members of the development team and occasionally with BirdNote’s communications and production teams. Successful candidates do not need to be bird or science experts, though a heartfelt passion for BirdNote’s mission is preferred.

Commitment to antiracism: The long and ongoing history of racial oppression in the United States and the centering of white people and privileged groups throughout much of the mainstream environmental movement requires us to intentionally practice antiracism in our organizational processes and media production. BirdNote is committed to creating the inclusive environmentalism we want to see in the world. We strongly encourage individuals from communities that have been historically underrepresented in public media and environmental organizations to apply.

Key Functions

Coordinate gift processing, acknowledgment and donor communications that provide a personal and timely affirmation of a donor’s support and engagement, including data entry, issuing receipts, and responding to customer service inquiries.

Assist with writing, producing and distributing donor communications pieces, including the annual report, grant proposals, and annual calendar.

Contribute to BirdNote’s fundraising success through data-driven decision-making with the creation of regular, accurate donation and revenue reports from Salesforce database as well as prospect research.

Contribute to the planning and execution of engaging events that support fundraising, donor acquisition and retention, and audience engagement.

Support fundraising across all BirdNote social media platforms and assist with social media analytics, tracking and reporting.

Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

Demonstrated training and/or background in donor relations and fundraising best practices

Passion for BirdNote’s mission of connecting people to the joy and wonder of nature by telling vivid, sound-rich stories about birds and the challenges they face and inspiring people to take steps to protect the natural world

Excellent organization skills and planning abilities. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects to completion on time

Strong writing and editing skills

Understanding of social media campaigns and strategies

Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM, experience with payment processing software

How to Apply

Email a cover letter and resume to devjobs@birdnote.org. Please also let us know how you found out about the position. Finalists will be asked to provide three references and will be required to pass a background check. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by March 15, 2022, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

BirdNote is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to an intentional organization-wide value placed on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in our policies, practices, procedures, and content.
Rough-legged Hawk showing off its alulae

All flying birds have what’s called an alula on each wing. At the center of the front edge of the wing is a structure covered with three to five feathers that functions much like a flap on an airplane’s wing. The alula helps create lift and also prevents stall when a bird comes in for landing, particularly for raptors, including this Rough-legged Hawk.

ellenb

Bohemian Waxwing eating berries

Bohemian Waxwing eating berries

In winter, wandering Bohemian Waxwings look for fruiting trees and shrubs – berries and fruit make up a large part of their winter diet.
Wood Duck male in eclipse plumage

By late summer, a male Wood Duck's need for fancy feathers to attract the females has passed. These birds have molted, and their bright feathers are replaced with mottled brown ones. Subdued colors help camouflage the male ducks, protecting them from predators. Come fall, the male Wood Ducks will molt again and become the colorful dandies we remember.

ellenb
