Save the date! The La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, a premier fundraising and community event will be held on the weekend of October 9 and 10, 2010 from 9am to 5pm. This unique two-day event will showcase over 300 booths featuring outstanding artists from Southern California and Northern Baja. Created by Friends of La Jolla Elementary as an extension of its popular and well-established Open Aire Market, this event donates all proceeds to key programs at three area public schools: La Jolla, Torrey Pines, and Bird Rock Elementary. These commonly underfunded programs include art, music, science, physical education, technology, and on-site medical care by a school nurse. All three beneficiaries are part of the financially troubled San Diego Unified School District. Learn more

The Haunt on Bellevue Haunted House

Halloween is right around the corner! This year a group of La Jolla High School students are busy preparing for the best year ever by helping build the ultimate Haunted House experience. This year "The Haunt on Bellevue" organizers are looking for sponsors to help with building expenses.

Levels of available sponsorship include*:

1 . Buccaneer, a $25 donation (includes Two front of the line passes on Halloween night)

2 . First Mate, a $50 donation (includes four front of the line passes on Halloween night)

Bird Rock like many neighborhoods has been impacted by the recession. We've lost restaurants such as Bully's La Jolla, The Cotton Patch, The French Pastry Shop and Cuvee. Long ago we even had the upscale Cindy Blacks. We currently have more than one restaurant space available in the Bird Rock business district along La Jolla Blvd.. That got me thinking what kind of restaurant would we like to see next? What would the community support? I started a poll and listed favorites (has since ended) I'd love to see open a second location here. In no particular order I’d love to see Isabel’s Cantina, Blue Water Seafood , Blind Lady Ale House, The Wine Encounter, O’Brothers Burgers or Jayne’s Gastropub consider opening here.
However, you probably have ideas too. Please leave a comment and share your thoughts!

Neighborhood Albertson's Store becomes Earth Friendly!

Locally Harvested Produce is Identified

Albertson's recently celebrated a grand re-opening. Introducing customers to their newly remodeled earth friendly store. As environmental stewards they are encouraging customer involvement in the company’s recycling programs and operationally they’ve committed to using energy and water more efficiently. Changes shoppers might notice are the 19 skylights bringing natural light in and reducing need for electric light. All dairy and frozen food doors are equipped with new LED lighting. Also during the remodel over 50% of construction waste was recycled or donated. I was also impressed to learn if there’s a power outage within the area, the store will be able to operate without disruption because electricity is generated on-site by the fuel cell. This will allow Albertsons to avoid costly food spoilage and ensure a reliable food supply in emergency situations.

What I like about our new store is they carry more organic and locally sourced fruits & vegetables. In this photo I took you can see they identify which were locally harvested. The deli counter also carries more readymade food which is helpful when you don’t have time to cook or need a bakery item last minute. Albertson's address is 703 Turquoise St., Paulette Loper is the store manager, let her know what you think about the changes!

Future home of Bird Rock Surf Shop... they are moving from present location to their new permanent home after remodeling is completed late fall.
Additional changes to Bird Rock Village include Bodywear Boutique at 5623 La Jolla Blvd., exiting and going online. Their next door neighbor, Julian Bakery will expand taking over Bodywear's space.We also saw two new arrivals open this Summer, Mimi & Red a trendy women's clothing boutique at 5630 La Jolla Blvd. and Dulce Shoes & Bags at 5663 La Jolla Blvd. In Bully La Jolla's case, 5755 La Jolla Blvd, an as-yet-unnamed fitness facility is going in.

Bird Rock Community Cookbook

The Bird Rock Community Council's "Bird Rock Community Cookbook" is finished and ready for the printer. With an overwhelming response from residents, merchants, and those with longstanding ties to the neighborhood, the book features almost 500 favorite recipes, art by Jane Wheeler, and photography by Shirley Preis.
The book is available ONLY as a pre-order with proceeds from the $20 donation per book going to benefit Bird Rock Elementary school. To ensure arrival in time for the holidays, all cookbook orders must be received no later than Sunday, Sept. 19. Orders can be placed by using a credit card: go to www.birdrock.org, click on "Cookbook," and submit order via PayPal; or a check, made payable to "BRCC," including name, contact information (phone number AND email address,) and quantity of books.
Mail a check and information to BRCC, 5666 La Jolla Blvd, #168, La Jolla, CA 92037. Delivery date is late November. The cookbook committee said the book will make "a lovely keepsake," and stated its gratitude to all contributors.

Locally Owned Eco-Friendly Lawn Care Service

The La Jolla Light recently profiled Clean Air Lawn Care, in case you missed the article I thought this story was worth repeating since they offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gardening services:

We want to retire the gas lawn mower," says Ankist Zadeyan, co-owner of Clean Air Lawn Care San Diego. With gas lawn mowers having been the lawn mower of choice in recent years, this may seem like an ambitious goal, but he and his brother don't think the idea seems so far-fetched after all.
Ankist Zadeyan and Antranik Zadeyan, natives of La Jolla and alumni of La Jolla High, launched the San Diego franchise of Clean Air Lawn Care this summer with the hopes of providing San Diegans a lawn care service that is environmentally green. Read the full article here.

Bird Rock Community Wall

This fall the BRCC will be working on a community art project, the "Bird Rock Community Wall", at the Wavery Street Gate Entrance. The community is encouraged to get involved and leave your mark by purchasing a commemorative tile for the wall. You can choose either a large or small tile to memorialize your family name, pet or organization. “In memory of” tiles will also be available. All proceeds will benefit Bird Rock Elementary School. Email Pamela Garvey or Jane Wheeler for a tile order form.

Lastly, "The Bird Rock Community Cookbook" is taking pre-orders through September 19th.

The Infamous "Coast Toast" Recipe

"Coast Toast" is featured on the breakfast & brunch menu at Beaumont's Neighborhood Eatery in Bird Rock and also at Brockton Villa (Beaumont's sister location in La Jolla Village). Once you've tried it's hard to order anything else! Best described as a soufflé like version of French toast, it's made with thick-cut French bread and a hint of orange. This will make you popular if you're cooking for guests and is sure to be a family favorite!

Coast Toast and Ocean View at Brockton Villa

Coast Toast Recipe

1 loaf soft French bread (sliced)
1 qt. whipping cream
10 eggs
¾ cup orange juice
½ cup sugar
a pinch of salt
2 tbs. vanilla
2 tbs. orange flavoring

Combine liquid ingredients. Pour over bread slices. Cover and refrigerate at least one hour.
Remove bread and discard liquid. Spread butter on flat grill. Cook bread until golden brown, then bake at 450° for 5 -7 minutes or until bread is puffed up like a soufflé. Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately. Serves 6

A Caution to Local Dog Owners: Unfriendly Plants on the Bike Path

The following information is for neighbors who have dogs and walk the bike path stretching between Nautilus Street in La Jolla and La Jolla Hermosa Avenue in Bird Rock.
Two dogs were recently poisoned by Century Plants on the west side of the bike path (off Via De Norte). The plants have expanded into a large grove, and are a member of the agave family (large, bluish with sharp thorns on the ends of the leaves).
Squirrels hide in these plants and dogs who chase them can get the very toxic juices on their fur, ingest it and become extremely sick. One of these dogs sadly did not survive and the other required extensive emergency care and hospitalization. Keep your dogs away from these plants they are extremely toxic!

Bird Rock Resident Named New Salada Tea Spokesperson

Bird Rock resident & Nutritionist Tara Coleman beat out hundreds of tea lovers from across the country to claim her role as Salada Tea’s first ever consumer spokesperson. The search began last May, when nutritionists, trainers, fitness instructors and tea lovers from across the country were encouraged to visit http://www.unbottleyourtea.com/ to submit an entry form and upload a video explaining why they would make a great spokesperson. After reviewing each entry, Salada Tea selected the 10 best candidates and posted their entry videos to the same website. From June 28 to August 1, America was invited to log on, review each :30 second video and vote for their favorite contestant. After a tight race, Coleman came out on top! Receiving the most votes for her video about incorporating tea into her everyday activities like shopping, jogging and yoga.
Beginning in September, Tara will be providing tips and suggestions on nutrition, fitness and how simple steps can add up to a big healthy results.

I'm a little sad summer is already ending and first day of school is fast approaching. Our summer has been cooler than normal and only warmed up the past week. Even after three kids, I have yet to develop a back-to-school or first-day-of-school tradition so I am looking for ideas of ways to make the first day back to school very special. Thinking of special lunch box ideas or something special we can do after I pick them up. I would love to hear any traditions you might have!

In the meantime, I have some important shopping to get done and I'm striving to do it all locally. I encourage other parents to do same. I heard from business owners some leases in the Bird Rock business district have gone up by 30%; let's do our part to show support and shop for all those back to school items here in Bird Rock.

4 reported injured after vehicle crashes into Cass Street Cafe & Bakery

Three children and one adult where injured when a drunk driver ran up onto the sidewalk and then crashed in to Cass Street Cafe on La Jolla Boulevard just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a police spokesman said.
The motorist was southbound on La Jolla Boulevard when he hit three children on the sidewalk before crashing into the restaurant, the police spokeman said. The man was in custody.
Four people were injured, with two of them children reportedly being transported to to Rady Children's Hospital. It appeared that a man came around the roundabout near Starbucks and lost control of his car. He reportedly went between two trees, hit a power supply box and then went into the restaurant.
At 8:10 p.m. the vehicle was still inside the restaurant and structural engineers were on the scene.
