Processing Movement

I have finally taken the time to work on some projects that have gone by the wayside. The Metro Sleepers, after a year and a half, has finally come to a place where I think I can share it with some galleries and by proxy, Paris. I have over sixty images - which doesn't sound like a lot. I wanted to have hundreds, but I suppose there is something to be said for not overwhelming your audience.

I've also started playing a little bit with some of the video I've taken.

I'm fascinated by movement. The kinds of movement that people overlook because it seems mundane. To me though, it's like the incessant ticking of a clock. It's the things that happen regardless of whether or not a human is there to make them - or sometimes in spite of it. It's way the eye can capture speed but completely un-focus from it. The way the mind detaches.

The first video (the water in the window) was taken my my trusty old Canon sureshot digicam (10megapixel work horse it is!) and the other two were actually taken with my camera phone. I find the ease (and pocket size) of my phone to be just the thing for these little quick bits. They seem to pic up the ambient sound a little clearer, though with the music added it doesn't really matter.

I'm not sure if they are more or less impactful with music... The jury is out.

Oh I never add new things here. It's not for lack of wanting. I've been hesitating to post these on the internet because I still have hopes for an exhibition with these works. No home for them yet.

Finally finding my groove again. Everything is different now: the subject, the medium, the colors and shapes.

It was a long time ago that my charcoals knew that sight.

Floating orbs make a Calder become a Kandinsky. And now there is the beginning of an idea...

Decidedly too dark. And so I abandoned the charcoal for the lighter touch of the pencil...
And the idea slowly begins to take shape.

Well. Not really new. I finished this piece about a month ago, but I am just now getting to posting it. Whatever. It's here, isn't it?

The piece is 20x16; acrylic on matte board with acrylic gel medium and magazine.

I will definitely start painting again...

Currently I do not have another exhibition lined up but I am working feverishly on many exciting new pieces which I will, of course, post on this site.

Come see the debut of the most talented collagist to make the stage!

Throw away your old ideas about collaging as a fine art form, and allow yourself to immerse in the vivid, scattered world of Juliet Pennay's collective subconscious. It's not to be understood but, rather, absorbed.

If there was a sound track, it might be sounds something like the calliope on a carousel: Charming with a side of the heebee jeebees.

If there was a story, it would be the secret heart of the artist herself, wrapped up in shiny paper of metaphors and symbolism.

The opening reception promises to be a regular debutant of dreams, with a side of cupcake. There might be dancing. General gaiety will abound, celebrating the coming out of an artist sure to shine in the Austin spotlight in the years to come!

An Exhibition of Pure Passion

Juliet Pennay was raised in a small town in Colorado where she feared volcanoes and the dinosaurs that lived under the hills. As she got older it was ghosts, railroad tracks and snakes. Red ones, like the great river that wound through the valley where she lived, slithered into her dreams and woke her with a bite.

It was images like this that drew Juliet to art. With pencil in hand she could sketch out the wilds of her imagination - and she did - from a very young age.

"Whenever anyone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up," She recalls, "I would always say ARTIST."

She pursued it continuously in her formative years, struggling against the characters who always seemed to show up in the last act, telling her she couldn’t "be" and artist. Sometimes she gave in. She tried being a waitress, but was too clumsy. She tried working at department stores but hated folding shirts (and still does). She tried being a secretary, but more often than not she forgot what day it was. It turned out that "being" an artist was the only thing she was really good at.

For her debut exhibition she found her inspiration in the imagination that has always haunted her: her dreams.

"Sometimes I wake up and I can’t erase the images. They’re so real I could touch them. The only thing I knew to do with them was put them to paper."

‘Putting them to paper’, though, seems a bit of an understatement.

In beautyofDREAMS, Juliet displays thirteen vivid translations of the inner workings of her brain. They are a feast for the eyes - charming and creepy and humorous all at once. You find them sticking in your mind the way they must have in Juliet’s before she laid them to rest in paper cuttings and adhesive.

Currently residing in Austin, Juliet’s art has finally found a place to flourish.

"I’m feeding it the right stuff," She jokes.

But her work is no joke. It is clearly her passion, as well as an intimate part of her being that she so graciously has decided to share with the world. And the world anxiously awaits more.

Juliet Pennay lives in Austin, TX with her two fat cats and a revolving door of her favorite people. She hates crunchy peanut butter, radio commercials, leaf blowers and work. She loves night swimming, bike riding, coffee, crime dramas and sleeping.
