http://www.birmingham-rep.co.uk/event/pride-and-prejudice

_It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife..._

The ultimate romantic comedy, Jane Austen's story of the five Bennet sisters and their relentless pursuit of suitable husbands is one of the best-loved novels ever written.

When feisty Elizabeth Bennet meets handsome bachelor Mr Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited. When she later discovers that he has scuppered the relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, the family's lives are turned upside down as Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and pokes gentle fun at the affectations and etiquette of provincial middle-class life.

Susan Hampshire plays the foolish and marriage-obsessed Mrs Bennet, one of Jane Austen's most delightfully ridiculous comic creations.

With its elegant Georgian settings and wonderful comic characters, *Pride And Prejudice* is a perfect entertainment.

_It's gorgeous hair you've got. It's a shame to hide it._

Rivka wants the perfect wedding. She has the man, the dress, the wig and two weeks to go. But when doubt is cast on her wig everything starts to unravel and Rivka finds herself far from home, up a tree and caught up in the eviction of an anti road protest, not knowing whether she'll be able to go back to where she came from, or whether she wants to.

Samantha Ellis’ play was inspired by a chance remark by Victoria Beckham in 2004 which sparked a crisis within the Orthodox Jewish community about the wigs worn by married women.

Samantha Ellis wrote *Cling To Me Like Ivy* whilst on attachment at The REP. Her previous plays include _Patching Havoc_ (Theatre 503), _A Sudden Visitation of Calamity_ (Menagerie Theatre), _Startle Response_ (Young Vic workshop) and _Sugar And Snow_ (BBC Radio 4).

Following the play’s premiere in The Door the production will tour the region, supported by the Sir Barry Jackson Trust.

And then there's her mother - a charismatic 60s pop star who clings to her former beauty (and a bottle of vodka) and who sets up camp in Hildy's spare room to belittle her from close range.

By day, Hildy leads the City's cleaners in revolt against the bankers. But by night, she dreams unsettling acts of violence...

Following its sell out run last year the multi-award-winning production of *Cabaret*, starring Wayne Sleep as the notorious Emcee, makes a welcome return to The REP this Autumn.

This "Sensational" double Olivier Award winner and Variety Club Awards 'Best Musical', which enjoyed a record-breaking run in London's West End, turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a sassy, sizzling haven of decadence...

The Joads, a family of impoverished Oklahoman sharecroppers, lose everything when their farm is repossessed after a devastating drought and are driven from their home to make the monumental trek Westward to California. Seduced by the prospect of opportunity and dignity, they invest everything they have in the journey. When forced to face the possibility that California may not after all be the promised land, they have no choice but to go on; nothing is left for them in Oklahoma.

Frank Galati's groundbreaking adaptation of Steinbeck's epic novel won two Tony Awards on Broadway. A plea for social justice and compassion, *The Grapes Of Wrath* provides the perfect canvas for a vast ensemble cast and is an all too timely examination of a nation in search of itself.

Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck's other novels include _Of Mice And Men_ and _East Of Eden_.

Chichester Festival Theatre Artistic Director Jonathan Church returns to The REP along with the creative team that was responsible for the sell-out Olivier Award-winning production of Steinbeck's _Of Mice And Men_ starring Matthew Kelly.

Mrs Warren's Profession

http://www.birmingham-rep.co.uk/event/mrs-warren-s-profession

What _is_ Mrs Warren's profession?

Her daughter, Vivie, has never really known much about her mother. A prim young woman, she has enjoyed a comfortable upbringing, a Cambridge education, a generous monthly allowance and now has ambitions to go into Law. Is it conceivable that all this privilege and respectability has been financed from the proceeds of the oldest profession? How will Vivie react when she finds out the awful truth about her mother's ill-gotten gains?

Shaw's ultimate test of a mother-daughter relationship is one of his most witty and provocative plays. Written in 1894 but banned from performance until the racy 1920s, *Mrs Warren's Profession* lays bare the rampant hypocrisy of Victorian society and its constrained morals.

Felicity Kendal's television credits include _The Good Life_ and _Rosemary And Thyme_. Her numerous stage appearances include _Amy's View_, _The Vortex_, _Happy Days_ and _Fallen Angels_.

Director Michael Rudman has worked extensively in the West End, on Broadway and at the National Theatre. His award-winning productions include David Storey's _The Changing Room_ and Dustin Hoffman in _Death Of A Salesman_.

It's Salford 1971 and George Khan, owner of the local fish and chip shop is determined to bring his family up in the traditional manner. His seven children on the other hand have ideas of their own. One's already left home to be a hairdresser, his daughter prefers playing football to wearing a sari and now 18 year old Saleem wants to study art while 12 year old Sajit is about to be transformed from a shy gawky boy into a self-confident teenager.

When the Khan kids begin to oppose their father's blundering attempts to control their lives, his English wife Ella is forced to make a choice between her husband and the right of her children to make their own ways in the world.

Caught between the bell-bottoms and shalwar kameez *East Is East* is a hugely warm-hearted and hilarious story of what happens when two cultures clash within one family.

Written by Ayub Khan-Din *East Is East* received its world premiere at The REP in 1996, where it became an instant hit and was subsequently made into a BAFTA award-winning film.
