Over the past few days, we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from the public who have come forward to volunteer their help in providing transport for our dedicated staff who would have been unable to get to and from our hospital due to the severe conditions.

After appealing through our social media channels for help, more than 200 people from across the region with 4×4 vehicles got in touch to assist members of our teams with their journeys.

Thanks to these acts of kindness and generosity, around 50 of our staff from across our Trust have been able to make their shifts over the last few days – meaning they could continue to provide the very best care and support for our women, children and families.

Sarah-Jane Marsh, Chief Executive of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“The severe weather has posed challenges but we’ve been both humbled and overwhelmed by the response to our appeals. We can’t thank everyone who has helped enough. We’re so grateful.

“That community spirit has also been matched by the dedication and commitment shown by our teams across our Trust. I’ve heard so many inspiring stories, including many colleagues who have gone above and beyond to ensure they were here to care for our patients and families. I am just so proud.”

Staff and patients at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust have joined forces to create a music video to help spread the word and combat the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.

The song titled the ‘48-Hour Review’ has been penned and performed by the band On the Raggedy Edge, made up of current and former medics from the Trust, to stress the importance of the regular checks after a global increase in the number of infections becoming resistant antibiotics.

Used to treat serious bacterial infections, experts at Birmingham Children’s and Birmingham Women’s Hospitals, which welcome more than 150,000 patients a year, check every 48 hours to see if antibiotics are working and, if not, whether they could be changed or stopped.

There’s been a rise in the number of infections that have become resistant to antibiotics, making treatment harder and, sadly, sometimes almost impossible. It’s estimated that as many as 5,000 deaths each year occur in England because antibiotics are no longer working to treat some infections.

A number of factors, alongside those that naturally occur, have contributed to the worldwide issue of resistance over the last few years, which include the misuse or inappropriate use of such drugs.

This World Antibiotic Awareness Week (13 – 19 November) the Trust is backing the national ‘Keep Antibiotics Working’ campaign aiming to combat the resistance issue, which experts predict without direct action could cause more deaths than cancer and diabetes combined in just 30 years’ time.

Joanna Correa West, Medicines Management Nurse at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Raising awareness of the dangers of antibiotic resistance is a real priority for us as the prospect of a world where antibiotics are not effective would dramatically change how we treat the women and children we care for with infections and injuries, along with those who have undergone surgery.

“This isn’t something that might happen in the future, it’s a global problem happening right now. Everyone has a part to play in tackling the issue as without urgent action we could live in a world where common infections, minor injuries and routine operations could become a lot riskier.

“The message is a very serious one but we wanted to do something that was a little different to make it a memorable one and we think we’ve done that with this unique music video performed and produced with the help of our staff and patients.”

The video can be watched on the Trust’s YouTube channel.

The national Public Health England ‘Keep Antibiotics Working’ campaign urges the public to always trust their doctor, nurse or pharmacist’s advice as to when they need antibiotics and if they are prescribed, take antibiotics as directed and never save them for later use or share them with others.

An innovative youth employment scheme at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has been highlighted for its efforts in helping young people into the world of work.

The Aspire programme has been awarded Youth Employment UK’s Talent Match Gold Award, which recognises and celebrates outstanding employers who support those taking their first career steps.

Designed by young people for young people, the pioneering programme was launched in December 2014 and has since helped hundreds from the West Midlands into the world of work – equipping them with the skills and experience needed to embark on their journeys into healthcare.

The project offers a host of opportunities for those aged between 14 and 24, including internships, traineeships, work experience and apprenticeships, as well as an employability programme for those with learning disabilities.

Rachael Smith, Training and Apprenticeships Lead at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We couldn’t be more proud to have been presented with our Gold Award. It’s not easy to secure such a prestigious commendation and it’s thanks to the hard work of our team and the wonderful young people we work with that we can continue to be a youth friendly employer.

“We have high hopes that this award will inspire even more young people to look into a career in healthcare and it’s great that we have another award to help put our Trust on the map as an organisation that champions the input and ideas of young people.”

The award comes after Aspire’s efforts secured Birmingham Children’s Hospital the title of Youth Friendly Large Employer of the Year in 2015, along with being shortlisted for a Health Service Journal (HSJ) award last year in the Workforce category.

Lucy Smith, from Halesowen, an Intern in the Corporate Nursing team at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“I’m really pleased that Aspire has been recognised for the amazing work the team does. The amount of support they offer you is brilliant and they really encourage you to make the most of your time here.

“My internship has given me so much experience already and I’d learnt and developed so many more skills just in the first two weeks of my job here alone.

“These skills will be something that potential employers will be looking for and by the end of my internship I know I’ll have plenty of examples which showcase everything I’ll have learnt at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s.”

In tribute to Birmingham Women’s Hospital Nursery Nurse, Amy Barnes, nee Shimell, Chief Executive of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sarah-Jane Marsh, said:

“Amy was a truly incredible nursery nurse, who loved her job and was looking forward to a promotion to a new role in our neonatal unit in a few weeks’ time.

“Having worked with us since she left school, Amy had so many friends here and everyone who knew her talks of her bubbly and cheerful personality, whilst always remaining calm, incredibly professional and focused on getting to know her patients, and others, really well.

“Losing such a much-loved member of our team has been a huge shock. Our teams are like families – so for many of us this is like losing a member of our own family. It’s so sad that her life has been cut short at a time when she still had so much more to give and such a bright future ahead.

“On behalf of all who knew her at our hospital, our most heartfelt condolences go out to Amy’s family and friends. We will never forget her and the amazing difference she made to the lives of so many babies, mums and families.”
