Well, I’m going all out for the snowman theme this season! I have start off by saying after so many years of marriage you start to collect stuff. Christmas rolls around and you look for something fresh, something different, so I pick up a few things here and there, and before I know it… I’ve got a collection! (How did that happen?) One year a friend gives me this really cute 15” Santa, well, he needed a friend for the mantle and 6 years later I have so many Santas I don’t have a vacant space anywhere in my house. The same thing happened with angels, 1 angel became 30 angels! And then the snowmen took over. This has gotten so out of control I now rotate my stock with theme years. Last year, all the Santas were out in full force. This year…hello Snowmen! And now with my addiction to Pinterest, all those fun ideas for treats and crafts and things to do for the kids are way over-the-top.

What to do? Live in a snowy area? Sledding, ice skating or snow tubing is so much fun! Get a pair of cozy slipper socks for each guest to jump into when they come in to warm up.

Have the hot chocolate ready with cool treat spoons.   Just melt some chocolate and pour onto colorful plastic spoons, add some mini marshmallows (or other fun treats) and let cool.

Now for some inside activities! Make or buy some ready-made gingerbread cookies ahead of time and then have the kids turn them into snowmen with white frosting and mini chips!

Make a winter wonderland with a bunch of white balloons all over the floor and build  snowmen out of balloons stuck together with tape. Draw faces and buttons with black marker.

2) The double feature. Most movie theaters have party rooms so you can host your whole birthday at the movies! It’s the perfect way to have your cake and catch a flick too!

3) The great skate. If you can’t beat the weather, embrace it! Freezing temperatures means that ice rinks are open for business. From New York to Minnesota, this is wonderful way to take in the beauty of winter. Get bundled in mittens and scarves, lace up your skates and take a few laps around the ice. Don’t forget to indulge in some hot chocolate when you want to warm up!

4) A day at the races. If your little winter wonder doesn’t mind the snow, why not head off to the slopes? Not every child knows how to ski, but a lot of the hills also have a tubing courses. Downhill races beat ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ any day!

5) Experience. Learning something new will bring all of your guests together. Crafting, cooking, dancing – there’s a class for almost anything you can dream of! Your local park and rec department will likely have an entire listing of course offerings on their website.

6) Tourists in your own city. Candy factories, root beer breweries and niche museums often have group tours available. You can even take it to the next level: One year I took my nephew and a couple of his buddies on a gangster tour in Chicago. The “Untouchable Tours” took us through all of the roaring twenties hot spots, and afterwards we took pictures in front of the Biograph Theater (I brought along Fedora hats, fake cigars and tommy gun props).

1)      When giving your child a birthday gift, even if their birthday is on December 25^th, ALWAYS use birthday wrapping paper.  Sure, you have a generous amount of green and red wrap at-the-ready, but now’s the time to focus on streamers and confetti.

2)      Speaking of gifts, don’t do Christmas-Birthday combos (you know, unless it’s the new iPhone).

3)      Consider hosting a “half-birthday party” instead of a birthday party.  While December 18^th is often consumed with holiday happenings, June 18^th just kicks off the start of summer!

4)      Bake a Batman cake.  Or a monkey cake.  Or a princess cake.  ANYTHING but a Christmas cake (don’t even think about a fruit cake!).

5)      Create a “Birthday Tree”.  My niece is wild about pink.  So one year we grabbed a pink foil tree and decorated it with “charm” ornaments – there’s a soccer ball because that’s her sport, a violin because she’s first chair and ballet slippers because she loves to dance.  We also take a “family snapshot” each year and place them into picture ornaments to commemorate her “Christmas Birthdays”.  Of course, her gifts are placed under the tree.

For most of the birthdays celebrated at our house, I will whip up a quick cake (my skills are from a box, but I do add a little extra frosting flair!), or just pick one up from the grocery store.  If I’m feeling particularly ambitious, I might even get a unique cake pan or a cake topper.  However, milestone birthdays get special attention!   I set aside the Betty Crocker box and call up my favorite bakery.  From monster trucks to lighthouses, “my guy” has done it all.  So how do you find a Cake Boss-worthy baker of your own?

1. Get referrals from friends or family members.  Like most of us, you’ve had your fair share of confetti cakes, but sometimes you come across something extraordinary.  Ask for names and numbers to keep handy for when you need them.
2. Look on the bakery’s website to see images of their previous work.  It’s likely that they won’t feature an Angry Bird or Cinderella character cake on their site, but perhaps they have a whimsical style that you really like?
3. Once you’ve decided to pursue a bakery, ask to see a full portfolio of their work for even more creative inspiration.
4. Don’t be afraid to request work references!  Are they timely?  Does the bakery consistently produce yummy cakes?  You won’t really know unless you ask.  Modern moms might prefer to use resources like Google Reviews, but nothing beats a good, old-fashioned phone interrogation!
5. Set up a meeting (and cake-tasting!) with the baker and be sure to bring pictures of how you’d like your cake to look.  There should be no surprises when you come to pick up the cake.  Not only should it look great, but it should taste fantastic (and be within your discussed budget).  Get the whole cake plan in writing.
6. Just say “no”…to bakeries that aren’t able to meet your needs.  It may take you a couple of tries to find a bakery that has the style, taste and price you are looking for.
