Trial and Error

Due to a deep desire to create my dream wardrobe, I often find myself remaking, tweaking or altering my designs to push them to the next level. The following outfit is the perfect example of this.

I usually wear my outfits out as a ‘trial’ before I’m settled that it’s complete because I like to know for sure that I’m happy with it. Ordinarily I would never shoot and document an outfit before this first step but for some reason i really wanted to shoot this look so this was my first time wearing.

Initially, this dress was a bit short so I made some shorts to go underneath.

It wasn’t until I saw the images that I realised that although I love the overall look of the pictures, I wasn’t too happy with the actual outfit and thought I could “push it to the next level”.

Since then I’ve added even more embellishments, reshaped the dress and made it a bit longer, losing the shorts entirely.

I recently reshot this look and will be sharing the updated version in an upcoming post.

For now, though, I still love these photos, even if the outfit isn’t quite complete.

Dressed In Cartier Red

This look is another from my first shoot with David. It was the last outfit of a very long day so we shot this very quickly!

I had noticed the Cartier store an hour before and I loved the visual elegance of the red and gold decor. I knew it would be a perfect fit for my final outfit; a red satin two piece.

By the end of this shoot I was exhausted. My sister Gwen had come along with me to help out, filming BTS footage.

We ended the day with lots of food before thankfully catching a lift back to Brighton with my now sister in law.

I’m very fond of these images! They’re simple but the environment works as the perfect backdrop.

Million Dollar Lady

I rarely plan my shoots, which has enabled me to experience many moments that feel almost serendipitous. When everything aligns without effort; vision, setting, timing… In actuality, I know it’s because I pray before these shoots and I trust God to direct it all.
My shoot with the incredible photographer David Nyanzi was one of those moments.
I’ve admired David’s work for a long time. His ability to capture texture and atmosphere feels effortless yet intentional. I’ve always imagined how my designs might look through his lens. This shoot was our very first collaboration and it unfolded in the most natural way.
We had just met for the first time a couple of years ago and were walking together, searching for a potential shoot location when something unexpected stopped me in my tracks. A quiet residential entrance, almost hidden in plain sight, immediately caught my eye.
There was something about its structure and mood that perfectly complimented the outfit I was wearing (one of my own designs). We decided to make it our backdrop.
The result was a series of images that feel both spontaneous and deeply considered. David’s photography brought out the details of my design, while capturing the spirit of the moment and the freshness of a first collaboration.
For me, the best shoots aren’t the ones you plan down to the last detail but the ones that unfold organically. This was one of them and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
Seeing my work come to life in a new way was one of the best experiences but little did I know, the shoots would only get better and better!

This post is entitled ’Million Dollar Lady’ because I edited a reel for this outfit, using the song ‘Million Dollar Baby’ (which I loved at the time!).

I Dare You To Dream...again

Last night I had a dream.
There was a delivery driver, hurriedly driving past my window. His van was wrapped in the most incredible design with bold colours, like something out of an art book. But the van was nothing compared to the driver’s outfit! It was just wow!

I don’t even remember what he was wearing, I just remember the impact of it.

The next day he drove by again, wearing an even better outfit!!

This time, I wasn’t the only one noticing. There was a group of “Fashion people” sitting behind me and they were gagging over his outfit too!

I hurried up to the window to get a closer look of his outfit, but he was gone.

I remember saying out loud, “It’s actually wild that this guy doesn’t at least have a blog or something.”

As soon as those words escaped my lips, something clicked. I knew I wasn’t just talking about him- I was talking about me too...

Sometimes it’s hard to see the value in what you do.
We don’t always realise the impact we’re making. The little ways we’re inspiring others, just by showing up as ourselves.

That van driver had no clue the impact he left behind.

So here I am. Back blogging again.

Honestly, I don’t even know if this is still a thing! Does anyone even read blogs these days? Who knows.

But this little space feels like the right place to start showing up again. To track the ideas, the inspiration and creative shifts I’ve had over the years.

I’m constantly inspired and pushing the boundaries of my creativity as time passes.

So I’m just going to post and hopefully someone else will be inspired to;

Keep creating. Keep expressing. Keep showing up. Even if you don’t know who’s watching.

Rocky Mountain

Two summers ago my brother and his friends took a long bike ride along Brighton beach and stumbled upon this scenic setting. They were all completely captivated and animatedly told me about it.
I saw it all for the first time with my dad and brother. That day the sun shone intensely in the warm breeze, we marvelled at the feeling of being transported somewhere far away from England.
That was also the day after we heard that my sister might be pregnant. Life looked very different that day and a little uncertain but that moment brought a sense of hope... A beautiful moment in the most picturesque location.
I remember looking around, forcibly trying to absorb every detail of the setting; taking mental pictures in anticipation of a possible shoot.

Returning to that location a year later was just as I had hoped. The weather was unexpectedly hot as the sun shone brightly once more.
I always knew I would wear red for at least one of the looks and made the coat with this in mind.
I explained everything I wanted to my team just before shooting began.
I wanted the photos shot from below to emphasise both the vast grandeur of the scenery and the drama of my presence with my poses.
The final images were shot by my brother and two friends. They far exceeded my high expectations and I can't wait to share the rest of the photos with you!

I have to say the last part of this year has been a very strange one for me. For the first time in a long time, September was not the hope filled month I am used to but rather one field with bad news. However, I remain forever hopeful that the best is yet to come.

As some of you may be aware I was away for a while and for the first time I’m returning with a backlog of photos to upload; which is a nice problem to have!

I took these photos last year when I was playing around with a blonde wig and thought I’d have fun with colour. This post is actually named after one of my songs which I feel the first two images suited so well!

Speaking of which, I’ve been working on a lot of new songs. Music is my first love and I wanna share that with you very soon!xx

I Just Unfollowed Everyone On Instagram And It's The Weirdest Feeling... |Self Portraits

I just unfollowed everyone on Instagram and it is the weirdest feeling...

Yesterday I had a really good day. (Actually, I’ve been really happy for a while now. I’ve had a real breakthrough in my life which has been like a breath of fresh air. I’ve also been working on a few other things personally, which I’ll share in another post) but the point is I’m in a good place.

I hadn’t visited Instagram at all that day but I decided to check in quickly late last night. I was on there for less than 10 minutes but when I closed the app, I immediately felt down.

Suddenly, all the things lacking in my life; all the things I wish I had, my unfulfilled dreams came to the forefront of my mind. I was no longer content with life. I felt dissatisfied and disappointed.

I’ve noticed this pattern on a few occasions so I knew what was happening and I was determined not to let the low sink in. I ran outside to catch up with my sister who had just left the house to go home. I told her how I felt and she told me to just delete Instagram because it makes everyone feel terrible.

The problem with that idea was it raised the question of how do I share/ promote my visually led pursuits without being on this huge image-based platform? I’m one of the very few that doesn’t suffer from anxiety but I don’t like the random effect it can have on me emotionally.

I posed this question to my mother, told her the details surrounding my desire to leave Instagram. She gave me some great advice and her final conclusion was that I shouldn’t follow anyone at all, that I should stay in my own lane.

So that was it. I made the decision to unfollow everyone and to stay focused.

When I first started going through my follow list, it felt quite liberating as each following tab changed to follow. However, I found some people harder to unfollow than others. Not because they were my very close friends but because I felt I had broken a potential connection to people I wish I knew better or hoped to know in the future. Others because quite frankly I looked up to them and felt honoured that they would choose to follow me. It felt rude not returning the compliment.

When I had finished I didn’t feel free as I had anticipated; Instead, I felt odd and unsettled. It took me a few moments to identify my emotions. Then it finally dawned on me. ‘I feel alone’.

Instagram had become a place where I’d go to hang out with my fake friends.

It’s like when you’re a kid in high school and you realise that your friends aren’t really your friends at all. They don’t celebrate you or make you feel good about yourself. You don’t feel accepted. So you make the bold step to cut them off, but that lonely feeling creeps in as you ask yourself, “Now what?”.

That’s exactly how I felt. The weirdest thing is, I had no idea I even viewed Instagram in that way… It had become an emotional crutch. It was also the last remaining trace of my life as an influencer. A time when I truly felt accepted.

That deep need to feel connected even when the relationship is toxic can be detrimental to your soul.

I was also dealing with feelings of guilt- the idea that I may offend everyone but sometimes when you do things for self-preservation, some people may not understand and some may even take offence. However, this felt like a pivotal step towards protecting my peace.

An eye-opening comment my mum made to me was, “These people you were following, were having an affect on you and you didn’t even notice... in some way you wanted to be like them”. Then she ended with a statement so true:

“Whoever you follow; will spiritually and mentally have an affect on you”.

Louis Vuitton resort 2020

Set in the TWA Flight centre at JFK airport, the newly refurbished location brought context to the Louis Vuitton 2020 resort collection.

Nicolas Ghèsquieres’ designs embodied the perfect combination of what I like to call dressy- casch [casual]. It was a fusion of practicality and opulent embellishment.

Leather capes with diamanté trim and biker boots. Unusual cuts and exquisite detail in the trouser pleats folded all the way to the belts straps. Open-ended zips irreverently sewn through the middle of seemingly complete outfits. Geometric styles with decadent fabrics.

Almost like a mixture of genres, to use musical terms.

A nod to the past and a look to the future with 80’s makeup with red lips and rouge cheekbones dramatically blended into the hairline and computer-generated images shown on television screen handbags (labelled as the "Canvas Of The Future").

I found this collection utterly inspiring. There’s honestly nothing I love more in an outfit than layered mixed textures and fabrics. Use of appliqué and embellishments give any piece such a sense of uniqueness. Also gives a sense of being multifunctional; there are no limits to appropriate occasion to wear the item.

Rolling up to the airport in any of these outfits is guaranteed to get your ticket bumped up to first class!

Saint Laurent FALL 2019 READY TO WEAR

One of my dreams is to visit Paris fashion week. It seems all my favourite designers are located there and it would be amazing to see all those beautiful garments in the flesh.

When Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello posted clips of the Saint Laurent show to his Instagram, I excitedly rushed over to the website to view the whole thing. To call it breathtaking was an understatement. I loved the theatrics of it all, it really did feel like a ‘show’!

As usual, there was a strong 80’s influence in the silhouettes.

The collection was everything you’d need for a full wardrobe and the show seemed to be divided into three sections. This was demonstrated in the transition from oversized statement coats with broad exaggerated shoulders, to the casual layered looks of leather and animal print. Topped with slanted hats; To the puffy one sleeved disco dresses at the end.

Which is why I chose to create the three representative mood boards.

The final part of the show was like a grand finale. The switch of the theme was introduced like a firework display, with flashing strobe lights and pulsing club music. The use of glow in the dark made the models disappear, giving the neon bright outfits a life of their own.

I’ve attempted to capture the feel of the show in my mood boards and while I do enjoy seeing images from shows or collections, I always think it's best to watch the video to get more of the sense of texture and way the lights hit the fabric; Something rather difficult to capture in still images.

My Kind Of Summer | Balmain Resort 2019

Balmain never ceases to invigorate me. Whenever I feel I've reached a creative slump, Olivier Rousteing will release a collection; jolting me wide awake with an embellishment feast for the eyes! With every new season, I feel more and more inspired to create clothes which are bold, void of any form of restriction.

I love everything about these Balmain resort pieces; from the silhouettes to the low dramatic angled photographic shots and extreme close-ups which have become a running theme in the Balmain campaigns. I absolutely love the way the images draw the viewer in. I also love the way the captured images seem to go from early morning to late night, giving the pieces real-life context, reflecting the versatility of the clothes.

The colour schemes are simply stunning; with the juxtaposition of vibrant foil metallics and tie-dye, watercolour effect. The silver broken mirror effect to what resembles a potato sack, Hessian fabric.

I'm not usually a fan of summer fashion as I've often felt like I have to compensate my style to keep my temperature cool.
These outfits encapsulate my idea of summer in the UK. While it can get extremely hot, you can never quite rely on the consistency of the weather, so wearing trousers is completely acceptable. Definitely my kind of summer wardrobe!

The Birth Of A New Beginning...

Hey, Hey!

So I’m back from what seems like the longest, most unplanned break ever!

A lot has changed since I last wrote. For a start, I am now an auntie to the most amazing little boy ever. Baby Jesse came and just changed everything! What I wasn't prepared for, is the way I love him. I love him so much! I just wasn't ready!

My sister had always planned for me to be her birthing partner way before she ever knew she was pregnant. The labour and birth was an unexpected traumatic experience which I’m still not ready to talk about to honest but let's just say at some point, we weren’t sure if we were going to see my sister Gwen again. She had to have an emergency c-section, which was completely unexpected because Gwen had the easiest pregnancy ever. She looked and felt amazing as you can see from the photo above but I guess life never really goes the way we expect...

They say time heals all wounds and I have to say it’s really true because that day and all the fear my family experienced feels like a lifetime ago! I thank God for protecting us.

Jesse is 6 weeks old today and he is my love! He was born on his due date the 23rd April, exactly 1 hour before the newest royal prince.

The photo above is from a pregnancy shoot I did for her a couple of weeks before her delivery, I'll share the rest at some point this week.

The photos below are some candid pics I took of Jesse throughout the first week of his birth.

Power Up | Fashion Inspiration

Street fashion or should I say online street fashion, has definitely progressed in recent years. It has a boldness to it that I find completely inspiring.
Instagram and social media have bridged the gap between catwalk and street walk and the stylistic limitations are slowly fading. People have started "Doing it for the Gram" (fashion wise) and I'm here for it!

In 2015, I set out to design and create a whole new wardrobe of clothes because I was bored of high street and no longer finding what I wanted for the right price in vintage shops.
That decision definitely helped me to push my own boundaries but at the same time, made me realise that I still don’t dress the way I really want to.

I love colour and mixing textures; it’s something I would really like to experiment more with. I am constantly collecting images of style inspiration, yet I still haven't managed to fully implement these ideas into my own designs.

The following images from British Vogue, encapsulate what I aim for. That freedom to experiment without timidity.

It's not just about clothes. I feel like I am still evolving into the person I'm supposed to be and to fully embrace my own personal style, will encourage me to truly...

A couple of weeks ago we had a small house party and I was really feeling my makeup so i took about 1000000000 candid selfies in different rooms all over the house (don't act like you've never done this before)!

I call them candid selfies because the house was messy and I didn't clear the space or try to make everything look perfect in true Instagram form. There are random bottles, wigs and a bag of maize flour in some of the pics. I was also wearing joggers and a long sleeve T because it was that kinda party and I was at home lol!

Anyway, A while back, I did a post on 25 Facts About Me and I thought I would do another one.
This questionnaire was initially comprised of 95 questions which I managed to edit down to 50! Hurah!

How To Let Go & Move Forward

"Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead..." -philippians 3:13

It’s impossible to move forward if you’re holding on to your past but how do we ‘let go’? Like everything else in life, it’s far easier said than done. It's something I’m actually struggling with right now as I write... My past issues have reared their ugly head to bite me in the butt. While people around me are quick to tell me I need to 'get over it'. No one is saying how.
So, I’m stepping outside myself for a second and giving myself some steps to move forward and hopefully, this will help others also.

Remember, your entire life is not at a disadvantage because of what has happened to you.

While the past does shape so much of who you are, it doesn’t have to determine who you become or restrict what life has to offer you. The past cannot hold you back unless you allow it to.
Scars fade. Though they may not disappear completely because they are a sign of what you went through. However, they do stop hurting if you allow them to heal.

Your past has given you invaluable lessons.

You understand life and people so much more than you would’ve if you hadn’t gone through this.
You are now more relatable because of this. People will be drawn to you when you are able to share that you’ve been broken in the same places they’re broken.

If it wasn’t this, it would be something else.

No one is exempt from pain. If you didn’t go through that particular experience, it would have been something else. Maybe something worse, maybe something less but the emotional effects would be the same because ultimately, this was to teach you.

Forgive...

This is one of the hardest things but it’s also the most effective ways of breaking the chains of your past.

Sometimes you don’t get the luxury of a resolution. You may never get to confront that person who hurt you. Ergo, you have to deal with feeling screwed over by unfinished business.
The thought of forgiving someone who doesn't deserve it can be painful because it feels like you’re letting them off the hook, but in actuality, you’re letting yourself off the hook.

The bible describes unforgiveness as “holding someone in your heart” and when you think about it, that’s exactly what’s happening. The person you’re mad at has such a huge place in your heart and ultimately, in your life. They’re constantly at the back of your mind; You carry them around wherever you go.
Forgiveness is letting them out of your heart so they can no longer affect your life. You are no longer their prisoner. You are free.

Now you are open to all the beautiful things life and God has for you and you can positively move forward because there’s nothing else holding you back.

Let It Go

They say patience is a virtue and honestly I should know better, but recently I find myself getting irritated by little things which I know shouldn't bother me. I think the main issue is, I’m having trouble guarding my heart and my peace. There are so many minor distractions which become huge barriers if we dwell on them.
There are so many bigger things to focus on and it’s silly to let these things occupy my thoughts but you know… I’m a mess sometimes.

I wrote a song a few years ago, based on a dream I had at the time. In the dream, I was stressing over organising a catwalk for a designer who wasn't even there. In fact, I was a self-appointed organiser because no one else would do it- but I was the one getting frustrated because nothing was organised. I was stressed about something that had nothing to do with me. Then someone in the dream gave me some advice; She said, “If you’d like to be happy in life, you’ve got to learn to let it go”.

It was so simple but profound. I decided to put it in a song just so I’d remember to take that advice anytime I get stressed. Well, right now I’m listening to a rough version of that song just to remind myself to calm the heck down. Nothing is ever worth losing your peace over. Minor distractions are a total waste of time.

Last week I was going through my hard-drive, trying to clear some space and I stumbled across these photos I took last year. I had completely forgotten about them until then and didn’t realise I had taken so many!
It was after I had taken the photos from my post Losing Light. By that time, I was tired and completely over it!
I remember being really unhappy with them because the sun was going down and the images were under lit.
I’m wearing the same top from that post. I'm also wearing a skirt I made from black velvet and white faux leather.

It kind of makes me wonder what other hidden gems I may have lurking around in my hard-drive...

Birthday Suit

Here are the final images from my birthday-dinner-turned-fashion-shoot I mentioned in my post Birthday Celebrations.

I had initially planned to wear a red on red ensemble, but I didn't manage to finish the skirt in time and I was running late so I had to find a quick replacement. I decided to pair the red top with my DIY Leather Jumpsuit. Not something I would usually wear together but necessity always breeds creativity and I think it looked pretty cool.

I bought these shades from Bershka in Lisbon. I love them so much because you get to show off your eye makeup whilst protecting your eyes!

I was sitting in the park for a few minutes, swinging on the swings and waiting for the actors to arrive on set. When I decided to take a few quick snaps on my very handy new camera.

Birthday Celebrations!

I’ve never done a “proper” birthday post before and I guess this isn't a proper birthday post either, seeing as my birthday was in December! But let's ignore that fact for now because this time I actually took a photo! However, I wish I could upload videos on here as there is an abundance of footage!

I spent the day shopping, then I rushed home to finish my birthday outfit. We then went to dinner and finished with late-night karaoke. We had a booth to ourselves and ended up having it for free which is always nice.

I had a really, really good time, surrounded by great friends and of course I had to fit in a photoshoot!

My sister (reluctantly) took the shoot photos. She has a really good eye but hates working with me because I know what I want and makes it a bit boring for her I guess. Either way, they came out really well!

It was the last day of shooting in Lisbon. We were in genuine shock that we had managed to reach the deadline because the final few days were intense to say the least!
Anyway, we made it and decided to go out and celebrate.

I had packed one outfit appropriate for a night out... It's a really simple dress that took me about 30 minutes to make. The fabric and colour is the reason I love it so much! (I have matching boots which I kind of wish I brought with me).
I also made the faux fur jacket which completed the look. I wore it like this all night in the freezing Portugal night air because... well, because fashion lol!

Anyway, these photos were taken in the hallway as we waited and waited and waited for the uber to arrive. There was a mixture of delays and cancellations which meant there was a wait of about an hour and a half. People were getting irritable and out of the mood as while I was perfectly content taking selfies and asking people to hold the camera and press the shutter as I used the flip screen to compose my own shots.

I purchased my awesome earrings from Mango earlier that day in a mad frenzy of sale euphoria.
I love them so much. They came as singles which is fine for me because I usually only wear one earring but I bought another as an emergency back up.

Nandos- Extra Hot!

A group of friends and I went to Nandos for dinner. I found myself torn between selecting sauces to dowse over my extra hot chicken and picking the best backdrop to take a photo.

You may recognise this dress from my previous post, Red Blooded Woman but I realised it would be a total waste not to take a photo op. So here it is again; the same dress, in another context with different accessories.
