<p>Bishop and the college chaplains discuss the challenges of working on campus. From the rise of anxiety to the loneliness that many college students face, and even the moral issues of the day make campus ministry and unique challenge and a great opportunity.  </p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Bishop Daly, recently returned from the USCCB, shares about the most recent Bishop Conference general assembly. The disappointment that more was not be done and the hope for continued action on the crisis. </p>
<p>Beyond the evil of the abuse crisis Bishop and the Vicars take a look at the wider crisis in the church and the world: individualism, the lack of authentic friendship, and the sexualization of so much of our culture. Good friendships among men are joked about as "bromances," many don't know how to live friendships beyond the use they get out of the relationship and how such an individualistic culture is part of the roots of this present crisis in the Church. While there is no golden age for human relationships, is the way we view our fellow human beings part of the problem?  </p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>During the vicars' summer break, Bishop Daly is inviting guests on the show to discuss important matters in the life of the church. This episode Bishop Daly, with the help of guest co-host Hilary Hammett, sits down again with an old friend from San Jose, Father Gary Thomas.</p>
<p>Fr. Thomas is a priest of the diocese of San Jose, as well as the exorcist for the Diocese of San Jose. He consults with other dioceses on the topic of exorcism and received his training as an exorcist in Rome. While in Rome studying Fr. Thomas met a journalist, Matt Baglio, who asked Fr. Thomas if he could write a book about his training as an exorcist. That book, The Rite: Making of a Modern Exorcist, was later adapted into a movie, <em>The Rite, </em>starring Anthony Hopkins.</p>
<p>Fr. Thomas also appeared on two episodes of the Bishop and the Vicars in the summer of 2017 to speak about exorcism and its role in the church. </p>

<p> "<em>Long Shall You Live</em> is a memoir following the lives of a young couple, Mienus and Suze, during the Nazi occupation of Holland during WWII. It traces Mienus’ involvement in the Dutch resistance in Vlaardingen and Rotterdam as a young patriot, and his subsequent struggle to survive the horrors of Buchenwald concentration camp. This story shares the love and the faith of these first-generation survivors following their liberation, and the challenges they faced immigrating to the United States. The book continues with the personal story of the author’s life as a second-generation survivor, and the fulfillment of the commitment she made to her parents “never to forget and never let it happen again.'"</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>This week on the Bishop and Vicars, the idea of human dignity is our topic of discussion. In our society today our understanding of anthropology has been increasingly unmoored from objective standards. The human person is whatever he or she wants to be. As Father Connall pointed out in our last episode the quote from Supreme Court's 1993 decision in Planned Parenthood vs. Casey "At the heart of liberty is the right to define one's own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life," is a sort of modern "non serviam." The defiant cry of Satan to God, "I will not serve." Opposed to this relativistic understanding of the human person is the Catholic concept of human dignity. In light of so many school shootings and the increasing division in our own society we need the revolutionary understanding of the human person that is brought to light by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Its a contest of Hallmark vs the Church this Ash Wednesday, as Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday. As the Bishop and the Vicars note Ash Wednesday is in many ways a celebration of love and forgiveness. We can turn towards one another and offer both contrition and forgiveness in this Lenten season. While we must abstain from meat and fast this February 14th; Ash Wednesday and the love we celebrate on Valentines are not opposed. Ash Wednesday and Lent invites us to go deeper into the meaning of love; to the eternal Love of God, and to the Ressurection of Christ at Easter. </p>

As the Bishop and the Vicars note Ash Wednesday is in many ways a celebration of love and forgiveness. We can turn towards one another and offer both contrition and forgiveness in this Lenten season. While we must abstain from meat and fast this February 14th; Ash Wednesday and the love we celebrate on Valentines are not opposed. Ash Wednesday and Lent invites us to go deeper into the meaning of love; to the eternal Love of God, and to the Ressurection of Christ at Easter. </p>

It traces Mienus’ involvement in the Dutch resistance in Vlaardingen and Rotterdam as a young patriot, and his subsequent struggle to survive the horrors of Buchenwald concentration camp. This story shares the love and the faith of these first-generation survivors following their liberation, and the challenges they faced immigrating to the United States. The book continues with the personal story of the author’s life as a second-generation survivor, and the fulfillment of the commitment she made to her parents “never to forget and never let it happen again.'"</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Summer vacation is here! At least for the Vicars, while they are away Bishop Daly welcomes to the show a friend from the Diocese of San Jose, Father Gary Thomas. </p>
<p>Fr. Thomas is the official exorcist of the Diocese of San Jose, he has served in that role since 2005 after being sent to Rome by the Bishop of San Jose to attend classes on the Rite of Exorcism.
