Interview:

Hi Jennifer!

Welcome to Bitten by Books, we are excited to have you here today!

I would like to thank you taking the time to join us for the question and answer session with our readers. It has been very interesting to get to know more about you and what makes you tick as a writer! Readers, if you haven’t done so already please stop by and get your copy of Jennifer’s newest mass market book release Once Bitten, Twice Shy.

BBB: What are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

JR: Challenges: It’s 2009 and folks have been writing stories ever since some dude whose brain was overflowing with words figured out that lead left marks. So it’s tough to come up with something new and interesting. Characters who feel real and yet have never stepped into fiction before. Situations that surprise while they fit into the limited kinds of conflict available for writers to exploit. But since I, personally, love coming to a section of story where I think, Gasp! I totally didn’t expect that to happen! overcoming that challenge is one of my highest priorities.

It’s also tough to be a writer and stay out of the cookie jar. It’s right there in the kitchen, you know? And I’m, like, thirty feet away! My solution has been a morning jog. Less guilt, more cookies. That’s how I roll.

Rewards: Wow, did you really want to talk to me all week? Because I could go on and on! It started with the idea that people I wasn’t actually related to would read stories I’d written. And that remains my biggest thrill. Seeing my name on a book, and that book on a shelf that I didn’t buy and put together myself? Huge! The most surprising plus has been the contact I’ve been able to have with my fans throughout the world. They are, hands down, the most awesome people ever. Funny. Interesting. Creative. It’s been awesome to talk to them through my website or one of my other fan sites. I deeply appreciate the fact that they’ve invested their time, money, and energy in the Jaz Parks adventures.

BBB: Do you consider your writing paranormal romance or urban fantasy and do you think it is important to distinguish between the two?

JR: I call it urban fantasy because that’s what my editor told me it was. Up to that point, if you’d asked me, I’d have told you I was writing supernatural thrillers because, well, I had to describe it somehow! But I’m not that big into labels. Lots of books contain aspects of several genres. In fact, my friends in the UK have found mine in sections of their bookstores as diverse as horror, mystery, and romance.

As far as distinguishing between paranormal romance and urban fantasy . . . in my mind, any story that takes place in today’s world but includes supernatural elements is urban fantasy. I truly see it as a wide genre, even more inclusive than those we’ve grown up reading like mystery or horror. I imagine Urban Fantasy as the host of a costume ball, answering the door to her immense mansion in a rather alien and beautiful outfit that we find later is her usual getup, welcoming all kinds of funky guests to her home. Which is how you find paranormal romances comfortably rubbing shoulders with supernatural thrillers and trading back-alley stories with, as my French publishers like to call it, Bit Lit.

BBB: How did the idea for your Jaz Parks series come to you?

JR: I finally decided to write a book that I’d love to read. I still feel guilty saying that, because somewhere in my mind I can hear my mom saying, Jennifer! That’s so selfish! But, you know, if you’re going to spend months and months with a manuscript, you’d better enjoy the goodies inside! So when my husband asked me, “What would you really like to write about?” my instant response was, Vampires! And from there the big decisions became almost clinical. It was like question and answer period at a slightly boring news conference.

Q: What’s the best kind of conflict to write about?

A: Life or death.

Q: Who deals with life and death all the time?

A: Assassins.

Q: Could way-cool gadgets possibly be involved?

A: Count on it.

And that inner Q & A just continued until I had a solid foundation from which to build.

BBB: What is the most ridiculous thing that you have thought about doing to any of your characters?

JR: I once considered making Cole gay. He was so pissed at me he stopped talking to me for a week.

BBB: If you had Jaz’s powers, what would you change in the world?

JR: Now, mind you, I have no idea how I’d go about doing this because I haven’t thought it out. But I’ve developed this deep fury that’s based on news articles I’ve read and documentaries I’ve seen that depict the crap status women in many countries outside the US are forced to submit to. I won’t go into detail because it’ll just turn into a rant. But if I had Jaz’s powers, I’d be out there rescuing these wonderful ladies from helplessness so they would never again have to submit to domestic abuse, rape, mutilation, educational limitation, and the bigoted laws that are designed to keep them from ever even touching their potential.

BBB: How much research do you do for your books? How much of it actually gets used in the finished book?

JR: Gosh, I’m not sure how to quantify that. I have to know the book’s location in great detail, so hours upon hours of research go into learning the country and its history, architecture, people, even folk stories. Starting with Bitten to Death I also began to find myself a contact person within the country who could answer questions that you can’t find in a book or video or on the Internet. The point, of course, is to make the background so real that when the monsters come out to play, that seems real too. And therefore scarier. Or more exciting, depending on how I hope to make the reader react.

I also research smaller details that have to do with weaponry, clothing, even names that would be appropriate to people living in a given region. That goes on throughout the writing and editing of the book. So, yeah, you’re probably talking days and days of research if you lumped it all together.

Probably three-quarters of what I learn ends up in the book, but you have to understand, I’m not into writing pages and pages of scenery. My characters fascinate me too much for me to leave them for that long. And I prefer creating stories that make you stay up until four in the morning. That doesn’t happen when you have to wade through an entire paragraph describing how spider webs glisten in the sun. So much of my research is distilled. Sometimes what you see in a sentence is an impression I was left with after reading an entire chapter about a country.

And to answer the obvious next question, the only one of my locations I have ever visited in person was Miami. I’m hoping to change that in a couple of years. But my daughter’s a sophomore in college and my son will start next year. So their needs take priority right now.

BBB: How do you keep track of your world building?

JR: I have this rad 3 x 5 card file holder that looks like a miniature trunk some rock-n-roller would pack his speakers in. That holds all my notes in reference to Jaz and Vayl’s worlds. A lot of it I just remember, as well. And if I ever have a question, I can also go back to a previous book (they’re all on my laptop), use the handy-dandy “Find” function, and double-check my facts.

BBB: Jaz’s grandma plays a huge role in her life. Is she based off of anyone real in your life?

JR: Granny May is based on my Grandma Ryan. Her name was Mary Catherine, which just didn’t ring the way I needed it to, so I used her mother’s name, which was May Tabitha.

Keep in mind that I’m a writer, so Granny May is her own gal. Okay, my grandma did play bridge, but it was a very proper game with nice old ladies who drank diet pop and ate peanuts from little china bowls. So you are going to see those kinds of similarities. And I do feel, as Jaz does, that my grandma is one of the main reasons I turned out to be a decent person. Beyond that, Granny May is much more funny and outspoken than my sweet, quiet little grandma. She behaves with Jaz, actually, a lot more like I do with my kids.

BBB: What do you feel are the benefits of the new electronic readers such as Kindle 2 or Sony Digital Book Reader to the environment?

JR: Hey, I’m for saving trees as much as the next gal, and you can’t deny the electronic readers are leaving plenty of pines intact that might’ve fallen otherwise. Does that offset the environmental impact of the electricity it costs to run one? Hope so.

BBB: What impact do electronic readers create on the bottom line for authors in the end? Do you feel they have a negative impact or positive, or no impact at all that you can see?

JR: On the first question, I’m not sure. I think it’ll be up to us and our agents to decide how digital media affects our bottom line, and if changes need to be made in the future to protect our rights in that area, I’m sure that will happen.

Most of the readers haven’t been a problem, and their makers have worked diligently with our publishers to protect copyright, so I’ve been happy to see that direction being taken. It’s the lack of protection offered by some manufacturers that has become a serious issue for many of us in the business.

You can get into that old argument that sharing digital books is just like sharing printed books, but it doesn’t wash. I may lend ten of my friends a book I really liked. But electronic media can be distributed to thousands of people instantly, only one of whom has actually bought the right to read it. That’s a scary concept to somebody like me, who not only depends on people buying my books to keep me in business. But who also knows that sales rankings will impact the details of my next contract—including how much I get paid and whether or not I even get one.

I’m also concerned by an attitude I’ve discovered among some computer savvy types who seem to feel that if anything appears in an electronic format, it’s free game. In other words, they just don’t believe they should have to pay for something they can’t hold in their hands. This is the most problematic side of the issue that I’ve come across, and one I don’t know the best way to address. But I think it does need to be dealt with, maybe the same way we deal with stealing material goods, by parents, teachers, and religious leaders saying firmly and repeatedly from the beginning of a child’s life that downloading books you haven’t paid for is stealing, and therefore wrong.

BBB: How many more books do you have planned for the Jaz Parks series? What other projects are you currently working on?

JR: Right now five books have been published in the series. The sixth, Bite Marks, comes out this October 29th in both the US and the UK. How fun is that going to be, having a release right around Halloween? Woot! Anyway, the story takes place in and around a fictional town called Wirdilling, which sits about half an hour from Canberra, the capital of Australia. I actually had a lot of help from native Australians, who cheerfully answered hundreds of questions about their country, because I was really worried about getting it right both for the wonderful people who live there, and for my supah cool fans from Oz. I’m sure I’ll hear what they think either way!

Next spring the seventh Jaz Parks book, Bitten in Two, will appear in bookstores. I’m just finishing up the final climactic scene in that adventure right now. And I have to say, this book has been SO fun to write! Part of it has been the location—who’s not going to enjoy writing about Marrakesh, Morocco? The colors! The food! The fact that Jaz has a birthday during this book! (Her cake is so pimp.) Too. Cool.

And then I’m contracted to write one more novel, which will make eight total for the series. It will end the story arc I’ve been working on, but not the series. I like to leave me some wiggle room!

I’m also working on a YA book which, yeah, I’d classify as an urban fantasy. It’s called Shadowstruck. It grew out of several questions I had rolling around in my head at once. What really happens to kids when they disappear forever? Why do some of them walk around with this cloud of fury rolling off their shoulders that even they can’t seem to hack through? What would happen to a society if it lost the ability to dream? I’m about half finished with the final draft, so I’m hoping my agent will have something to market by the end of the year.

BBB: Can you tell us about the Jaz Parks series and the general storyline that drives it?

JR: Jaz and her boss, the vampire, Vayl, are assassins for the CIA. So, as you might expect, each book revolves around their major mission, which is to rid the world of a Big Baddie before he/she/it turns the United States into Monster Poo.

Plus.

They have kind of a thing going. We (meaning me and my editor) like to call it a slow burn romance. I have literally made people scream, “I want them to kiss!” (And then made their toes curl a few chapters later!) But I like the way their relationship develops throughout the series. It seems more real to me than falling into the sack two days after they first meet. And it makes sense in light of the issues you see them both dealing with. Major, heart-rending stuff that I won’t detail here because, well, it would ruin the books.

BBB: Do you have any stray plot bunnies running around in your head and do you think something may come of them?

JR: Yes. I have enough ideas in my head for at least six more books in the Jaz Parks series. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but it’s there! As far as actual fruition for those books, I can’t predict at this point whether or not that’ll happen. Everything depends on the readers. I’m not sure people realize how much power they have when they buy a book to ensure that a series continues, or even expands, but I do think it’s wonderful.

I’d also like to write the book for a musical comedy which would be so brilliantly entertaining (snort!) that it would make it to Broadway. I’ve been making notes on that for the past year, and if only I could get Mel Brooks to write it with me we’d be set! (Hmm, maybe if Mel’s too busy I could hit up Simon Pegg. Do you think he’s into singing and dancing cops?)

BBB: Will Jaz and Vayl’s romance be kept at a PG-13 level?

JR: Oh, man, am I hearing moans out there? Cries of, “I wanna see Vayl naked, dammit!” (He’s superb; does that make you feel better?)

Here’s the deal. Part of why I write my romance the way I do is to provide an alternative to some of the hot-n-heavy stuff that, if not done well, can get old. Because it gets in the way. It can even crush the story. I have read stuff where I dropped the book into my lap and said, “Holy crap, they’re screwing again? I don’t care how long his member is anymore, what happened to the bandits?”

Another reason I don’t go graphic is because you, the reader, have a fabulous imagination. I truly believe if I gave you details, you’d be disappointed, because your Vayl isn’t quite the same as mine. So my job is to take you to the bedroom door and then let you go through on your own. I think the ultimate experience is better for each individual that way. As my friend told me the other day, “I think I’d be almost mad if you did a full sex scene. Because I know what I think he looks like and how he acts. And if you told me different, it’d be all wrong.”

And the third reason the short answer to your question is, “Yes,” is that my children read my books. Someday I hope my grandkids will too. I promised myself a long time ago I’d never write anything I’d be embarrassed for them to read. So far it’s worked well for all of us, so I don’t believe I’ll be breaking that one any time soon.

BBB: If your series had a theme song, what would it be?

JR: “Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On” by Jimmy Buffett (introduced to me by a fabulous fan) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP0C5Jbmd9k

BBB: When you started writing Vayl’s character, did you know that you’d be writing one of the hottest vampires in fiction or did it just come naturally for him?

JR: I honestly had no idea. That’s just who he is. I think it helps to be almost 300. You learn a lot over time. (Ecstatic sigh.) A lot!

BBB: If you could shapeshift, what animal would you be? And why?

JR: I’d be an eagle, because I’ve always wanted to be able to fly, you know, under my own power. And I love that fierce, proud look they have about them. I appreciate a don’t-mess-with-me demeanor backed by actual power. And, if you’ve spent any time with Vayl, you’ll have noticed why!

BBB: Our reviewer Jackie says: “One of my favorite characters in your series is Asha from Biting the Bullet. Do you plan on bringing him back in future books?”

JR: You know, Jackie, I keep doing that to myself. I’ll bring this fascinating character in to work with the team and then have to leave him or her behind once the story’s over. I’ve done that again with a warlock I just adore in Bitten in Two. At the end I’m always left sticking out my bottom lip going, Am I ever going to see you again? as they ride off into the sunset.

I’m not sure how Asha would return to Jaz’s crew, because he’s got to police that particular region until someone comes to relieve him. I might have to just write a novel about him, and I have considered doing a couple of “spinoffs” starring one-stop characters like him, or the werewolf, Trayton, from Bitten to Death. But I have several projects planned ahead of those, so they’re still just possibilities at the moment.

BBB: Will Cole ever find his happy ending?

JR: Yes. (That is one thing you can pretty much count on from me. Even if I break your heart at certain points of the story, I will always try to give you immense happiness at the end. I figure life makes you bawl enough as it is. Your fiction should make you smile—or even break out laughing in public so that everybody looks at you like you’re a nutcase—whenever possible.) Anyway, I do know who Cole ends up with. But I’m pretty sure it’s not anyone you’d expect.

BBB: The ghosts from Jaz’s Highlands adventure seemed to have one Hell of a time. Will they have a recurring role in her adventures?

JR: At least one of them will.

BBB: Do you think you’ll ever release all the short stories you’ve written for your blog? Or will those remain e-treats for the readers?

JR: I’m not sure. I think that would be a great idea two or three years down the road if my agent could get a publisher interested. Definitely we’d need to get the first eight books in the series out first though. I will say that Orbit loves the fact that I offer my fans little stories now and then, so much so that they asked me to write one to include in the mass market release of Biting the Bullet. How do you feel about golems?

It’s Jaz Parks. I’ve already smoked the guy who was the pain in the CIA’s you-know-what for the past few years. But now, in the power vacuum left by the death of Edward “The Raptor” Samos, a struggle for supremacy has begun between his former allies.

The CIA feels the balance must be maintained. So when an agent planted among the Weres discovers a plot to assassinate the Coven’s leader, my vampire boss and I are brought in to take out the woman hired to do the deed, a killer who might be as wily and Gifted as ourselves.

So it’s off to the Scottish Highlands for some twisted fun among murderers, demons and half-crazed relatives. Sometimes being a top-secret CIA assassin isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Jaz Parks is at it again in One More Bite, the fifth installment of the story of a girl who just wants to shoot some bad guys and maybe crawl into bed with a certain vampire. If it weren’t for people constantly trying to kill her, she might just get the chance.

After the death of Edward “the Raptor” Samos, Jaz and company are sent to the Scottish Highlands to make sure that the scales aren’t tipped in the Great Big Evil Warlord Power Balance. Try saying that three times fast. With her are Vayl (her boss, sverhamin, and the vampire who makes her feel more alive than anything with a beating heart ever has), Cole (co-worker and friend who carries a torch for all things Jaz), and Albert (former Marine and ever-embarrassing father).

Mission? Kill an assassin named Bea who was hired to take out Floraidh, Samos’s former partner. Kind of hard to protect the woman who supplied a man with the means to kill you and yours, but Jaz is a company girl. She does what she has to even if it means kicking and screaming the entire way.

One of the aspects of Jennifer Rardin’s writing I like the best is the humor she infuses in her story. The line that sent water sputtering from my mouth is from page 233: “If Shelby had not quickly pulled him out of the way, a sea of Del Monte chunks in their own syrup might have crushed the life out of him.” The precise description of the pineapple chunks and the fluid they rested in served to lighten an otherwise tense scene and showcase the author’s ability to make even the most mundane of items seem important.

Even though one of my most beloved characters was only briefly mentioned (I miss you Asha!), this was my favorite book in the series to date. There’s so much going on that you literally can’t put the book down, you have to find out what’s going to happen. Of course the growth of Jaz and Vayl’s relationship sent shivers down my spine, but what really touched my heart was the development of the relationship with Albert. His reaction to seeing what Jaz has become, and realizing what made her that way, made him the hero of the book in my eyes.

One More Bite easily rates 5 tombstones. Jennifer Rardin is a master story teller who’s created characters so vivid, so alive, that you can’t help but find yourself wrapped up completely in their lives.

Jaz Parks here. My latest mission has taken me to the ancient Greek city of Patras; but instead of soaking up its splendor, I’m here to infiltrate a Vampere Trust. Only two vamps have ever escaped the tightly bound communities and lived to tell the tale: Edward “The Raptor”Samos, the most reviled criminal mastermind in recent memory, and Vayl, the CIA’s number one assassin who also happens to be my boss.

The Raptor is trying to take over Vayl’s former Trust. Unfortunately the Trust’s new leader has her own plans.

This job is going to be the death of me.

Bitten to Death, book four in the Jaz Parks series, is the book I thought would finally see Jaz and Vayl sharing his tent, and I don’t mean to play cards.

Vayl’s former Vampere Trust (think Godfather: The Undead) is Jaz’s only strong lead to capture international terrorist Edward “the Raptor” Samos, the man responsible for the shenanigans from the first three books. The problem is, once you enter a trust, there’s normally only one way out, and it isn’t by walking out the door.

There’s a power in the Trust that works its way through Vayl, Jaz and David on this mission, turning them against each other. In the process, Vayl is bound to a woman he turned against her will eons ago, Jaz gets a new werewolf friend, and Cole gets pissed. They still haven’t gone on their date, and I can’t see it happening without a hoard of people being maimed in the process.

After reading this series, I’m a little depressed. I found it too soon! Now I have to wait a bit to read the fifth book in the series, One More Bite.

This is a mission unlike anything my vampire boss, Vayl, and I have ever been on. It’s not our usual take them out and run; it’s an undercover mission that needs the whole gang: a psychic, an interpreter, and a weapons specialist. We’re joining a Special Ops team to nail the Wizard, a major terrorist thorn in the military’s side. We’ve never gone in with such heavy artillery before, but the more the merrier, right? Um . . . nope. At least not since Vayl and I learned part of our job is to ferret out a mole concealed in our unit.

To add to our problems, we’re being harried by a pack of reavers bent on revenge, and targeted by a Seer who wants to share Vayl’s power - at any cost. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the army of demonic, soul-sucking parasites either. This is going to be a blast.

The Jaz Park series is more addictive than the caffeine that sustains my sleep-deprived body. In this book, Jaz and Vayl (her sexy vampire boss) are pitted against vengeful reavers and Dave, Jaz’s possessed brother. Every relationship explored in the first two books get blown to bits and reconstructed into some nouveau piece of art.

After he looses his vampire mind and makes me yearn for a sharpened stake, Vayl realizes his priorities have been skewed and he and Jaz finally let themselves think about taking that next step. Still no mad, passionate lovin’, but the tension is so well-written that you practically taste their desire for each other.

Cassandra and Dave have a love connection, ruining my previous theory that she and Cole would end up BFFs. (Note: This does NOT stand for Best Friends Forever) And Cole…dear, sweet Cole…he blackmails Jaz into a date with him. Not sure how Vayl’s going to take that.

A new character was introduced, who unfortunately went MIA in book four (well, he kind of had that town in the Middle East to protect, but still, doesn’t he get vacation time?), and I hope he pops up in a future installment. There is just way too much potential for him not to.

Jaz Parks has enough trouble in her personal life. What she doesn’t need is more trouble with her vampire boss and another mission. This time she has to retrieve a vital piece of biotechnology by killing the maniac who stole it: an ancient Chinese vamp. Their cover in this mission: professional entertainers at the Corpus Christi’s Winter Festival.

The crew’s all here: a psychic, a techno-wizard, a singing vampire, a juggling PI, and Jaz. Holy crap in a bottomless well, Jaz is going to bellydance. It’s definitely, probably, quite possibly going to be the end of the world as we know it.

The second book in the Jaz Parks series was even more fabulous than the first. Secondary characterization allowed me to see a wider view of Jaz’s world. Cassandra, the ancient Seer of Troy fame, Cole, the high-top wearing flirt, and Bergman, the quintessential techno freak, are examined more closely in this installment.

The only part that bugged me was the confusion with Cole’s flirtations. In the first book, he and Jaz share a kiss and some wayward flirting. Near the beginning of this book, he gets jealous when she and Vayl are alone in the bedroom, indicating romantic feelings. But later on, he gives her a brotherly kiss. There was no middle ground. It kind of threw me off.

Jaz and Vayl’s relationship furthers, but not to a satisfying point. That’s not to say the writing wasn’t satisfying, but the “will they or won’t they” when you know eventually they will is killing me! They have a few breakthroughs, but share no more than a quick and powerful peck. Grr… It’s odd to say this, but I think stringing their relationship along through books without actual physical contact has heightened the sensuality of it.

These books have absolutely amazed me. Not since first discovering Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison have I found a gritty yet humorous paranormal series with a protagonist that you can’t help but love.

Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he’s meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing’s ever as easy as it seems?

Jasmine Parks has bad luck written all over her. A member of a special forces unit of the CIA known as the Helsingers, Jaz finds misbehaving vampires and makes them behave—or else. That is, until a group of vampires gets a drop on her crew and takes them out, all except for Jaz and her brother David. To make matters worse, the list of deceased include Jaz’s fiancé and her brother’s wife. Like I said, nothing but bad luck.

When the book begins, Jaz is being assigned a new partner. Vayl, a vampire over two hundred years old, is the golden boy of the CIA and he’s chosen her to team up with. The question is, why?

Normally I don’t get into novels involving terrorism - it’s just not my scene - but this book knocked me on my ass and left me begging for more. The history of Jasmine Parks, aka Jaz, is cold, dark, and open to so many literary possibilities. Her relationship with her boss, Vayl, is undefined but obvious. They want each other, but at what cost? The memory of Matt, Jaz’s deceased fiancé, is a fresh wound that won’t allow her to live a normal life let alone be in a normal relationship.

The action sequences are heart-stopping, and the character development is so well done I can actually see the characters, what they’re doing, what they’re feeling. Jennifer weaves a world in which you can’t help but immerse yourself. So much so that I stalked eBay and four local book stores to find the second book in the series.

We thought a little Q&A was in order, since we seldom get a chance to chat with a man who dates a dragon slayer. I will tell you it’s not exactly easy to speak in his presence, the man his one handsome hawtie!

Here’s a little blurb about the book:
Alex Caruthers is a sassy socialite who knows when it’s time to turn in her dancing shoes and kick some serious dragon booty. But when Ginjin—the dragon warrior who’s tried to kill her numerous times—chooses her as his mate, Alex finds herself in a situation that’s too hot to handle.

For help she turns to Jake, head of Caruthers security—and a total hottie in a suit—and asks him to pose as her boyfriend. Their relationship might be fake, but Alex can’t deny that one touch from Jake makes her burn hotter than any dragon could.

Here we go…

Q: Jake, we really appreciate you stopping by today can you tell us about your job with Caruthers’ Corp.?

A: I’m happy to be here. Let’s see, I’m head of Caruthers’ security. I’m responsible for coordinating teams to protect the Caruthers’ business enterprises, and also for the protection of the sisters Gillian, Alex, Mira Claire, and their brother Bailey.

Q: Wow! That’s a lot of responsibility. What did you do before joining the company?

A: I can’t go into detail, but I worked with some other law enforcement agencies. Both of which would cause me bodily harm if I discussed what I did with them.

Q: Okay, then. Is it true that you are dating the dragon slaying Alex Caruthers?

A: Silence.

Q: Um, would it help if I told you that both Candace and Alex said it was okay if you shared a few details?

A: Again, silence.

Q: Moving on. What is it like having to protect someone who must protect Earth from dragons?

A: Tiring. I worry about Alex constantly. She’s always getting into trouble with those beasts and she never thinks before she speaks. Though, I have to admit those are also things I admire about her. She’s one tough woman.

Q: How do you feel about dragons?

A: (His right eyebrow had gone up and he’s giving me a steely-eyed look.) I suppose they have their purpose in the universe. I don’t mind them at all, as long as they stay away from our world.

Q: Hmmm. I heard you had it in for the Dragon Warrior Ginjin. Is that true?

A: (Again, with the eyebrow) He isn’t one of my favorite beings. He’s hurt Alex innumerable times and I wouldn’t be upset if he were to disappear. If I never see him again I’ll be a happy man.

Q: Is it true he’s chosen Alex as his mate?

A: (I think he just growled.) He may have chosen her, but the feeling isn’t mutual. She will never be with that maniac. Not if I have anything to say about it.

Q: Huh. You really take your job seriously.

A: Yes, I do. I’ll protect Alex from him if it’s the last thing I do. (He checks his watch.) Sorry, but I need to get back to Caruthers’ Corp. I have some things I really need to check on.

Q: Okay, well thanks for hanging out with us today. Remember everyone, you can read all about Jake, Alex and the Dragon Warrior Ginjin in Dragons Prefer Blondes.

Alex will do whatever she can to help Aspen but she has a few other problems on her hands. Ginjin, the temporary head of Xerxes, decides that Alex should marry him so that he can avoid an arranged marriage, but Alex is having none of that as she recruits Jake, the man tasked with keeping track of the Caruthers girls, into helping her avoid Ginjin’s clutches. As things start to heat up in the battle with Xerxes, so does the heat between Alex and Jake.

I absolutely enjoyed Dragons Prefer Blondes. Candace Havens has a way of writing fun and charismatic books. I give Dragons Prefer Blondes five tombstones. Reading Alex’s story was an absolutely entertaining way to spend an afternoon. Alex seems to be the more down to earth but cannot seem to keep herself out of trouble sister, which makes her story all the more diverting. As the sparks fly between her and Jake, I eagerly anticipated more of the chemistry between them.

This is another series where I would say that while you probably do not need to read each book in order so far, it would not hurt, as some events that happen in Dragons Prefer Blondes refer back to The Demon King and I. If you have not yet read anything by Candace Havens, then this series is definitely a fun series to start with.
For help she turns to Jake, head of Caruthers security—and a total hottie in a suit—and asks him to pose as her boyfriend. Their relationship might be fake, but Alex can’t deny that one touch from Jake makes her burn hotter than any dragon could.”
