My friend Julie presented this to me for my birthday. The blue bird jar was stuffed full with little bits & pieces and then tied it with a vintage birthday card. Julie knows how I love birds, and is always so thoughtful with the gifts she selects.

The snow covered ground makes it difficult for the little creatures to find food.

I visited a local bird shop right before Christmas. The owner, Jack is the nicest man. He's one of those happy people that I imagine never shows a sad face. I believe anyone that loves birds would carry a happy face!

I picked up extra bags of bird food while in the shop. Some for both my dad and me. My dad feeds the birds peanuts. Blue Jays and Woodpeckers love peanuts! I'm interested to know the different species of birds food preference. I guess it's kind of the same with people.

Italians specialize and prefer pasta. Greeks prefer olives and feta. Mexican, beans & rice. Blue Jays prefer peanuts!

Julie, thank you for the Birthday Bird Love!

Enjoy caring and sharing New Year days.

Maybe in reference to a childs mood right before Christmas. That word best describes how I feel right now, at this moment. Did that word originate from the phrase "ants in the pants"? H'm,,, I would think so.

Snowy out, extreme cold moving in and I'm attempting to re-arrange my thoughts towards creating and reading and focusing, really focusing. Not sure what the deal is, but I am having some issues with the latter.

I suppose the days after Christmas are always like that. Kind of unsettled from all the excitement and goings on, don't you imagine? Do you get like that too?

I haven't walked for over a week, and I believe that is a big part of why I'm feeling that antsy feeling. When I walk I release stress and think about all the ideas that are floating around in my head, sometime feeling overwhelmed by them, but walking always settles those thoughts down and seems to keep me in a happy medium. Walking is my form of meditation and it seems my body rebells if I don't allow it to meditate.

As I gaze out my dining room window I see the deep piles of snow here and there along the sidewalk. I am walking today! No more looking out this window. Put on those warm wraps, (my grandma used to call them that), and snow boots and get those ants out of my pants! Shew ants, get out of here!!

This came in the mail the other day.

I would imagine this is what a seed catalog from the early nineteen hundreds would have looked like. Possibly minus the colored front cover.

After looking through the paper catalog, I'm pondering those winter thoughts of planning my little garden. Not quite ready to make those plans yet, those blooming feelings usually don't appear until February. Kind of like a built in detector in my head.

I would imagine if I lived in the country my feelings of uneasiness would be less severe.

For then, I would be feeding the chickens, milking the cow, and chopping extra wood for the long winter ahead. My days would be filled with countless hours of chores just to maintain the farm.

I turn 50 today!

Funny, I used to think 50 sounded really old, but now, It's just a number. Considering last years mix up on the age thing, do you remember? I thought I was turning 50 last year, but to my surprise, 49!

I'm blessed to be healthy and happy, and my body minus the menopausal pop-ups doesn't feel fifty at all.

No big plans today. Dropping off Christmas presents to friends, picking up a few last minute good cheer items and going out to dinner with Lennis.

It's the shortest day of the year you know, so the day will go by quick!

Enjoy caring and sharing holidays.

I ordered a few 5 B Candle Co., Votive candles because I really believe they are one of the best candles on the market, and I love to burn candles in the winter when it's cold outside.

When I opened the box, I quickly noticed there were extra candles that I didn't order. Free candles! What an extraordinary act of holiday kindness, and is truly appreciated by this candle loving girl. Thank you Marcia! Can you see all those Patchouli candles? I'm in heaven!

Honestly, I really can't say enough good things about these candles. First, they burn for a very long time. Second, they throw off their candle scent unlike any other I've ever burned. So, if you're in the market for a great candle, look no further than 5 B Candle Co.

More Holiday Kindness followed with this Harry & David gift from Mrs. P's children. The card read: Thanks for your love and kindness. I smiled as I read that and thought what a lovely thing to say to someone.

It appears as though someone has opened some of the Harry & David! H'm, I wonder who that was?

Today is suppose to be the busiest day at the Post Office and I'm heading there later this morning to mail some last minute orders and gifts. No worries, I have my packages all ready to go, just going to drop them in the little box! Isn't the Internet handy?

This Saturday marks the last one open before Christmas.

After next week, I will close down the studio for awhile. Probably through the month of January. I really feel I need the time to work on my creative idees for spring. I'm going to make some major design changes throughout Bittersweet, and doing some vamping too.

My friend Leigh Ann from Pink Kitchen recommended this book awhile ago that I really am interested in reading.

I also like the look of this one.

I'd like to think I'm disciplined enough to align my creative thoughts into nice even rows, that way I could really focus on each one, but honestly, sometime I have so many idees, and I want to make so many things that it's hard to focus on one at a time, which I believe interferes with the design idee from start to finish. Does that make sense? You know you sometime hurry to get one design finished to begin another, not completely happy with the first one. Oh my gosh, I've lost it, haven't I?

Anyway, in all seriousness , original idees take a considerable amount of time and energy, and cents that's how I feed my family, it's pretty important stuff.

I'm really looking forward to some time off. I really wont' be completely off. I'll be working on designs for upcoming Vintage Markets, but love doing that, and it seems those idees just kind of come impromptu.

What are your plans for after Christmas? Maybe you'll be nesting your home. Or possibly pulling out a crafty project that's been on the back burner for while, or maybe you're like me and plan to on hunkering down during a cold January reading some good books, and lining up your idees one by one.

Enjoy caring and sharing holidays.

Happily,

I was going to toss the shot seeing how distorted and twisted and out of focus it was, then I thought about my day yesterday, and realized this shot reflects the kind of day I had yesterday.

It started out like any other day, although I did have one of those weird inner sight feelings to stay home, but ignored those intuitive feelings and scurried out the door. So much to do you know with Christmas coming!

Dropped by my bank to make a deposit. The friendly bank clerk, Juanita, always smiling, always happy, she's a jewell. Proceeded up the hill to head to the Vintage Market, oh, this is slick I thought to myself as I skidded toward the stop light. Just sitting, thinking, waiting for the light to change and, BAM! Not again! I think to myself. Step out, look at the guy that hit me, look at my little car and his big JEEP and see my little bumper cracked from end to end. Thinking, I knew I should have stayed home today, I just knew it!

Then later that day, I am desperately looking for a T. Gift Card I purchased last week. No card, anywhere, money just tossed out the door! Depressed!!

Lennis was off and talked me into going Christmas shopping, thought it would cheer me up. Stopped by J.C.---- to pick up a comforter that Patrick had requested on his Christmas list. Write a check out of my business account and hand it to the nice girl, and hear her say, "sorry Mam, we don't take company checks"! "Oh really, I say in astonishment, because I'm thinking to myself, why on earth not?" Lennis came to my rescue on this one.

Feeling a little down, I told Lennis I just wanted to go home... I'm expecting a coffee order to arrive today, and should probably be there when it comes. Later that day, all day, into night, no coffee. Orders will have to wait!

After unwinding that late afternoon and reflecting on the day, I began to ponder some thoughts, you know how I am!

My first thought was, what if that guy knocked me harder, then I would have been bumped into the heavy traffic into the major highway, and probably would not be telling you about my day yesterday.

Second thought, I think I'll check out T's web site and see what kind of policy they have on their gift cards. Low and behold that red and white colored company honors lost and stolen cards, wow!

Third, I realized my bad day makes so many others bad days look like a vacation! I'm going to call my coffee customers and tell them the coffee will be in tomorrow!

Fourth, after taking that picture last night, I also took this one.

This shot better sums up how I feel now!

Enjoy caring and sharing holi-DAYS.

An arctic blast moved through overnight, brought with it just a few inches of snow and blasted us with extreme cold north winds. Our friends North have officially experienced a full blown blizzard. according to the National Weather Service. All these years living in the midwest, and I never knew the true definition of a blizzard, very interesting.

I'm sewing some Christmas gifts for family and friends. Beginning to see a pile of pretty pot holders take form on the dining room table.

Isn't that fabric pretty? I love it! I purchased it here. I have also began working on Bittersweets Spring line. I about flipped when I saw these lovely textiles on their web site. My taste seems to go back and forth with traditional French, Feed-sack Florals, and Days Gone By Style Fabrics. I love to mix them.

I dropped by the Vintage Market and shopped a bit. I picked up a few Christmas scented candles from this place while I was in. I was drawn to one of their holiday candle scents, bayberry. When I returned home and lit the candle, I loved the fragrance. If you like candles, then you won't be disappointed in these. They burn wonderfully and fill your space with aromatic holiday scents.

I also purchased these.

The little hair pins are made by two young entrepreneurs that are raising money for a special art fair show this Spring in New York. I wish them much success and I know they are going to have a blast at the event. There Mom, Susan was working at the market when I arrived and told me about her daughters anticipated journey.

A winter day ahead...

I'll be cutting, trimming, sewing, and gazing out the window every now and then at the frozen tundra outside, thinking how fortunate I am to have a warm cozy home and a loving family.

Enjoy caring and sharing winter days.

My design preference seems to change from year to year. It becomes more refined and seasoned.

This year I have only been compelled to have a light dusting of Christmas both in the studio and through our home. However...Having said that...

I find it to be exciting knowing each Christmas is going to be a somewhat different design. In fact, most of the excitement I experience comes from creating a new theme or idea and incorporating those thoughts into the actual design. Usually and most always, using what I have or gathering items from nature.

Oh of course, it's a soul satisfying moment, when I climb into the attic remove the boxes filled with Christmas past and spread them here and there. Like Mr. Braun's Santa's.

Remembering that all the decorations in the world don't hold a candle to my memories of caring and sharing during the CHRIST-MAS SEASON.

I thought I'd share with you some Christmas past caring and sharing moments as well as some studio pictures from holidays before.

A word about these caring and sharing moments...

They come from my heart and my soul and the love that I have for my fellow human. . They are not intended to make me feel better or offer me a ticket to heaven.

I still have my sled from when I was a kid.
Last night I overheard the weather man say it was going to snow!

Honestly, my favorite thing about winter, SNOW! I'ts been like that since I was a kid and hasn't changed.

The first big snow of the season we couldn't wait to grab our sleds and scurry outside to slide down that big hill on Truman Road. That hill brings back lots of memories. I also fell off my bike when I was eight and had seven stitches in my chin. I still loved that hill!

My sled was the fastest on the block! I used to run paraffin over the blades of the sled for extra traction.

We'd stay out all day long playing in the snow, maybe with an occasional warm up inside, just a few minutes, didn't want to waste one bit of the beautiful snowy day.

Andy Gump and I were the oldest in the neighborhood, we raced each other down the hill. My sled always won, of course! That's how I remember it anyway!

One winter stands out above all... We had tons of snow!

I built a huge igloo out of the snow. It took hours to construct. You could even stand up in the igloo, well that is if you weren't over 4 feet tall. The local newspaper owners lived across the street and noticed the well designed igloo and took a shot of it for the cover of next weeks paper.

Back then it seems it got colder. Global cooling I believe they called it back then in the sixty's and seventy's.

On the outskirt's of town just a few miles away was a place called Hartell Lakes. I loved this place! There were several small lakes surrounded by beautiful Missouri countryside. I remember many summers camping with my family, as well as winters spent skating.

When it got really cold my Dad would ask me if I wanted to go ice skating. I would call my friend Tracy H. and the three of us would put on our winter gear and head for the lakes.

My Dad would grab his hatchet and head towards the middle of the lake. There he would chisel away the frozen ice making sure it was safe for us to skate on. Once we got the okay, Tracy and I, already skated up. would skate onto the ice. I remember Tracy and Dad being a little braver than I.

They skated all over the lake, I stayed closer to the shore line. Not really the dare devil I thought I was, huh.

I remember watching my Dad skate. He was an amazing skater. He skated backwards with ease. I was in awe the first time I watched my Dad skate, wondering how does he know how to do this so well? I was never as talented on the ice as my Dad.

As I've gotten older, these memories hold dear to my heart. I guess that's why I 'm so fond of winter and snow!

Although I haven't ice skated since those Hartell Lake days, sledding continues to be a favorite winter sport with my family, and that walk in the newly fallen snow, a winter tradition now that helps me hang on to those Winter Love Memories.

Enjoy caring and sharing winter days.

Happily,

Going light this year on gifts. Planning my favorite thing, a Christmas Eve dinner with my family. Decided to fix standing rib roast since the hens are out! Preparing more home baked treats for treasured friends.

Prepping for Bittersweets open house. I am going to try some new cookie recipes.

I picked up one of these, so that I could get the pretty scalloped edges on the cookie.

Cookie number two...

Cookie number three...

Heading outside to gather some big sticks for the fire pit outside. It's turned to winter overnight! Planning on having an overfill outside the studio door on Saturday and don't want my guests to be cold while they are standing outside.

Going to fill the CD player with a few favorite Christmas tunes for my guests too.

Love all of these...

James Taylor, Blossom Dearie, Moody Blues. Yeah, the Moody Blues did a Christmas CD a few years back!

Enjoy caring and sharing holidays.

Happily,
