It would certainly be nice if real-life relationships wrapped themselves in such a neat package. But we all know that familial relationships can often be so challenging and difficult, that sometimes it takes us years to come to any kind of comfortable understanding or peace with them.

Of course, it’s also a difficult enterprise to portray these kinds of relationship dynamics with complete honesty and accuracy in a mere 120 minutes. Luckily, Patricia Riggen, the writer and director of the new movie Girl in Progress, recognizes the importance of authentic and multi-faceted character development in a story that deals with such a sensitive and often complicated relationship pairing as mother and daughter.

The movie explores the life and despair of a young girl (Ansiedad) who is being raised by, or more accurately, raising, her young mom, who is too preoccupied with her own romantic relationships and personal dramas to pay much attention to her daughter’s increasing unhappiness.

After learning about coming-of-age rituals in one of her high school English classes, Ansiedad, played to perfection by newcomer Cierra Ramirez, decides that by creating her own coming-of-age story, she will be able to free herself from the miserable life she is leading with her mother.

To execute her plan, she recruits the help of her best (and only) friend, Tavita (played by Raini Rodriguez), and targets her English teacher (Patricia Arquette), as a mentor of sorts, to be a witness to her transformation from neglected, unhappy teen to free and liberated adult.

Ansiedad’s very detailed plan is going along swimmingly, until she begins to realize that growing up too quickly may not offer her the kind of care-free existence she had originally envisioned.

Girl in Progress will have a lot of women calling their mothers - whether their relationships are good or bad.

Eva Mendes, as Grace, portrays the part of a neglectful mother with just the right mix of bubbly party girl and oblivious selfishness. We never really see her as harsh and unloving, but more as an extremely immature and needy adult working long hours to support herself and her daughter – and who also uses very poor judgement when it comes to romantic involvements and forging a solid relationship with her daughter.

The ending is a bit formulaic as far as the resolution between mother and daughter and what appears to be a complete transformation in their relationship, but because of the solid and thoughtful performances, you do get the feeling that things may be better in Grace and Ansiedad’s world for the moment, but they both recognize that there’s a long road ahead to repairing the damage caused by their irresponsible choices and actions.
