Ok so you saved up and purchase those stylish leather designer shoes. You wear them the heel breaks or a buckle snaps, or you've worn them down and haven't given them the attention they deserve. I'm sure you love your shoes and you don't want to toss them - Right? So what should you do? Shoe repair services are relatively inexpensive. I recently paid $22 to have my heel tips replace and the leather buffed and polished on a pair of $800 Christian Dior Heels. I also scrapped the leather on a pair of affordable Nine West boots and because they were very comfortable and worked well with my personal style, I took them in to my shoe repair shop and had the leather repaired for $10. It would have cost me five times that amount to purchase a new pair. What I realize is that whether you spend a small fortune on shoes, or have very little to spend, taking care of your shoes makes sense.

A quick tip on an affordable way to maintain expensive shoes is to pamper your footwear the way you would pamper yourself. Apply protective spray to shield them agains spills, rain, snow, and even mud. This a must do for leather and suede shoes. Keep shoe trees in them when you're not wearing them, to help maintain their shape. Always store your shoes in the original box or in a covered container. Again, take them in to a shoe repair shop for a quick polish or cleaning on a regular basis. Also, baby wipes are great to use for cleaning patent leather shoes.

Remember, the shoes you purchase are an investment, and of course they should be treated that way. If you care for your footwear, it will last for maybe two or three seasons. Styles change from year to year, but if you customize your outfit adding new trendy accessories then your shoes will certainly blend well even if the styles have changed.

While shopping for clothing in retail stores provides us with convenient access to hot styles, often times the clothes are not tailored to fit our curves as nicely as they fit the mannequins or some other body. Many of us have become too busy to spend time on finding the perfect fit for many of the garments in our wardrobe so we buy the most stylish pieces that may not fit our bodies the way that they should. Plus as rapid as fashion styles change, shopping from season to season for new garments can be expensive. Why not go shopping in your closet and pick out some ready-made items and if you’re handy with the needle and thread, refashion them or take them to a seamstress who will alter them in no time. I found some great resources at the local library for quick fixes and ideas for adding buttons, studs, pockets, etc to many pants and shirts.

In this environment, transforming an existing garment is satisfying and an economical alternative to purchasing new items every season. Also, purchase pre-owned shoes online or by visiting your local thrift store. If you have access to a great cobbler, then you can have the shoes refurbished to appear “just like new”. I recently took a beautiful pair of Via Spegia boots to my Cobbler and he repaired all the nicks in the leather, polished the boots, and removed the old leather soles and put on new Vibram soles on. The boots look brand new and the total cost of the repairs was $20. For the cost of dye you can turn a brown boot to a black or darker color boot. The possibilities are endless. I can't wait until to begin my Holiday Shopping for 2009. Winter is approaching and while you’re perhaps getting by with mixing and matching warmer climate clothes and shoes with your new fall wardrobe, as the weather gets colder, you will need to unpack your winter gear and reorganize your closet. This is the best time of the year to do a closet makeover. Now a closet makeover does not mean throwing out your clothes and buying new clothes. Especially in tough economic times when savings is a must, your first stop on your shopping trip should be your closet. In fact, recently, the CEO of Neiman Marcus complained that many of his customers are shopping in their closets and bragging about it. I’ve been doing a lot of this myself, and my strategy has been to reduce the amount of clothes that I have in my closet to a small number of high quality items and shop for only new accessories like shoes, handbags, shades, ear rings, jewelry, belts, cardigans, scarves, etc. This has worked wonders for me. It keeps my closet organize and manageable.

Cleaning out a closet or organizing your wardrobe for the next season can be a daunting project, but cleaning and organizing your closet will save time, and money. Where do you begin? Here are some simple rules to get you started on the path to less clutter and more space. Having more space in your closet will save time and energy (no more searching for shoes among the piles of clutter!) and reduce stress.

1.First establish a goal - “What Is My Ultimate Goal?” An organized closet? Easy access to shoes? An end to frantic mornings?

Whatever your goal, keep it in mind at all times. A vision of the end product will inspire you. Sit or stand in various vantage points in the area you want to reorganize so you can see its possibilities from different perspectives. Deciding where you place things will depend on the shape and size of your closest. However some things are standard, like hang like items together and the things closest to the entry door should be the things that you need to access more frequently. For example, you need to have a rain coat, but there’s no need to store it in the front of your closet, because you won’t need it that often.

2. Take everything out of the closet and sort clothes and accessories into three piles

This maybe hard for most, but it is necessary because you will need to decide on what stays and what goes.

Pile #1. Items that you LOVE and WANT to wear. This pile is for the most up-to-date items that you fit in properly. These items are the foundation of your wardrobe. Put these back in the closet. You should organize the rack by like items, meaning put the jeans together, the shirts together and then finally the two piece outfits together. You can also sort by casual, professional, and formal, etc. Remember where you place items depends on your personal preference.

Pile #2. ALTERATION Items. The second pile is for anything that you can wear that has minor issues, which can be repaired or altered. If you can sew then great, these items should be stored in a container until they are repaired. It does you no good to have damaged clothes in the closet if you are not going to repair them to wear. If you can sew, schedule some time for repairing these items or simply find yourself a good seamstress for minor alterations. Do not put them back in the closet until they’ve been repaired.

Pile #3 Items that will be RECYCLED. This pile is for those clothes that you never wear, are out of date, are extremely worn, or damaged beyond repair. You will need to subdivide this pile. First, check through the clothes and the clothes that are extremely worn or damaged should be neatly folded. Place them in a large plastic bag and take them to your local thrift store or donate them to your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or to any other charitable organization. You’ll be surprised to know that even damaged or stain clothes can find a new home and be reused. I once found a cashmere cardigan that was missing buttons and I purchased it for three dollars and took it into my seamstress and she attached some unique buttons and gave the cashmere cardigan a fresh look. If these clothes are in excellent condition, then you have two options for getting rid of them. This is the season for giving, so use this as an opportunity to give these clothes to a local charitable organization. On the other hand if you need some extra cash you can sale them on ebay, or take them to a consignment boutique. I would consign any item that's like a formal outfit or special custom made professional outfit. This is the fun part, because you'll make lots of money if you are like me and have clothes with tags that you've never worn but are still of some value.

Warning: All of the clothes should go into one of these piles. Be honest with yourself – DO NOT KEEP CLOTHES OR ACCESSORIES IF YOU HAVEN’T WORN THEM IN THE PAST TWO SEASONS. If there are some items that are “timeless” then you should store these in a container in the attic or basement.

Shoes
An essential element to an organized closet is a organization system for your shoes. A good place to start if you don’t have hardware installed is with a simple shoe rack. If you don’t have a shoe rack, then you need to get one. I recently purchased one of the ten (10) slot storage racks that hangs from the bar in the closet and one of the underbed shoe organizers which slides underneath your bed. The underbed storage container can store up to 60 pairs of shoes in one air tight underbed organizer. Place the most frequently worn shoes in the rack in your closet for easy access. If you like to store your shoes in the original box, then that’s ok if you have enough room in the closet. My brother has about 200 pairs of shoes in their original box stored in about six different locations throughout his house. It just doesn’t make much since to have so many shoes and if you have that many why are you storing them in the original box? I like to keep things simple, so I only store 10 (casual or after five) shoes at a time in the rack in the closet. I keep my gym shoes packed away in my gym bag so there’s no need to make room for athletic shoes.

Just bought a beautiful cashmere sweater or cardigan and now you need to know how to care for it, then look no further. Follow these easy steps to care for your cashmere sweater and keep your sweater in shape for seasons to come.

Tip #1 - Hand wash your cashmere sweater. Although most care labels instruct you to "Dry Clean Only", you should treat your cashmere sweater like your hair and hand wash it in warm water with a mild detergent. Hand washing cashmere sweaters will actually make it softer over time. Be sure to press out the excess water after washing, but do not wring the sweater. Instead, lay it flat on a towel and reshape it as it dries. Dry cleaning should be your last resort for removal of stubborn stains.

Tip #2 - Never hang a cashmere sweater ― it will cause shoulder dimples, and the pull of gravity will distort the overall shape. Instead once the sweater is dry, place the sweater between some plain tissue paper and keep it well away from any damp or moisture.

Tip #3 -If you are storing the cashmere sweater over the warmer seasons, remember to wash it before storing to protect it from moths. Moths don't hunger for the fiber itself, but rather for the food, dirt, perspiration or body oils left on the sweater. If you are like me, and despise moth balls, then use cloves, lavender, rosemary, thyme, dried orange peel or cedar chips.

Tip #4 -To fluff out the fibers and restore your sweater to its natural softness, run it through the tumble dryer for a few minutes. Make sure the tumble dryer is on a delicate cycle and keep the temperature cool. Heat is never good for cashmere!

Tip #5 - Allow your deodorant to dry completely before slipping into your sweater, and not spritz yourself with perfume while wearing cashmere because it stains the fiber.

Tip #6 - To avoid tears, holes, or snags keep your sweater away from rough items, purses, jewelry, etc. and use a sweater shaver to remove pilling. Do not press hard or you will shave a hole into your sweater.

The cashmere is the fiber obtained from the Cashmere goat and it is often found similar to the wool, due to the fact that it is warm and thin at the same time. Cashmere is more expensive than wool, because the goats that it comes from are very rare.
