Iceland 21.May 2011: Volcanic eruption in Grimsvotn, Vatnajokull glacier, Iceland. They lie in the highlands of Iceland at the northwestern side of the Vatnajokull glacier and are covered by its ice cap. The eruption plume had risen to an altitude of over 65,000 ft (~20 km). The last eruption in Grimsvotn occurred in November 2004. Grimsvotn is Iceland's most frequently erupting volcano.

A year has passed since Icelanders got hit with what is perhaps the biggest storm in Icelandic history. The collapse of a financial system that everyone thought was so wonderful, or at least the president of Iceland spoke of Icelandic businessmen in suit as "modern-day vikings". Well as it turned out, those modern-day vikings have jumped ship and left the rest of us sinking from the weight of a huge debt called Icesave.

Gyuto Monks of Tibet

I took these photos of the Gyuto Monks in 1997, during my first year as a photography student at PSC in Melbourne. I was blowing the dust off the prints the other day for a related project that I´m hoping to be part of.

Today it is 50 years since China crushed the Tibetans who demanded independence, and The Dalai Lama fled to India as an exile. Today China has declared martial law and is holding Tibetans with an iron fist, and no foreign journalist are allowed there, just in case they might witness some more innocent Tibetans being killed.

Here are some videos from the demonstrations that i recorded with my phone.

The first one is from 22/1 and shows the atmosphere when people are screaming ´vanhæf ríkisstjórn´ or ´incapable government´ in front of Parliament.

The other two are from last saturday 24/1 when around 6000 people gathered in Austurvöllur, downtown Reykjavík, for the 16th consecutive saturday and demanded that the government step down and that major cleanup will be done in the Central Bank and The Financial Supervisory Authority (the FME).

Although it does look like fait is taking control of the situation, the Prime Minister of Iceland just announced on friday that he has cancer and said there will be elections 9 May, and recently the Minister of Foreign Affairs has been having treatment for brain tumour.

The situation is really heating up here in Iceland, people are demanding elections, but still 100 days since the financial crisis hit Iceland, none of the politicians have taken responsibility and stepped down. People were demonstrating for over 14 hours today and continued late into the night. They even tore down a large christmas tree, which was a gift from Oslo, and burnt it.
