When you make art it’s not really easy to blend the freedom of nonsense with clever concepts to come up with something outstanding and unique, but Scott really knows how to do that.

Abstract compositions, organic shapes, smooth textures and bright colors are some of the features of his inner world.

I’ve had the pleasure to ask him some questions and learn interesting facts about his work:

1. Please describe us your work in 3 words.

Playful, Retro & Stupid.

Stupid in the sense that sometimes the more stupid the idea is, the more it can be worked around into something spectacular. There’s a fine line between something that could considered visually intelligent and stupidly surreal, and i wouldn’t have it any other way.

2. What have been the hardest challenges in your career?

There’s a fair whack of stuff that could go here but one thing would be the factor that is the evolution of style while you’re already getting work. From the client’s perspective, they always seem to pigeon hole you into certain areas of style and context. To them you will always be the guy who did those simple drawings or have a minimalist style which can be troublesome if you want to push yourself further creatively. So its mostly down to balancing between creating and evoking the old work while doing something new as well. I also try to add some bit of experimenting into my work no matter how small a part it may play a role in, but which could play a larger role in a future project.

3. What things and/or people have influenced you to shape your style and how did you develope it?

Pretty much anything and everything. it could be something that’s in my surrounds at the time, something said or read from somewhere or other, possibly from an event which happened at some point down the line.

As for people, I tend to look at past designers like Soul Bass and Paul Rand for their nice clever minimalistic work. Charlie Harper’s beautiful animal designs, folk like Heinz Edlemann, Push Pin Graphic with all of that retro, weird and unusual illustrations they and others produced at that time.

Video games have also influenced me in some way or another, games like vib ribbon, limbo, jet set radio, tetris and may other titles have at some point inspired me in some form or another. Also old school game covers where it was up to the imagination of the illustrator/designer to create something that represents the game when the graphics were just blips of colour on a screen.

4. What kind of projects you enjoy most?

I like the type of project where i can pretty much can do whatever i see fit but i also like doing the odd project where the subject may be considered dull and uninteresting, the challenge here is to turn it around so that the subject becomes something unexpected and very interesting to work on, the subject now stands out as something extra-ordinary rather than ordinary. Generally its challenges like this and more that i live for when it comes to creating any of my work.

5. Some advice for new young illustrators?

5. Always keep on pushing yourself further and never give up. Surround yourself with folk who can give you more critical feedback of your work as these folk usually end up being the opinion that you can trust. Don’t be afraid to push clients to your own preferred concept if you think the direction their chosen concept is going isn’t working. If your both still in disagreement them compromise. And finally develop a hard skin when it comes to approaching clients or getting feedback from them. They are not trying to put you down nor are they thinking that you are rubbish, most clients have generally dealt with seeing large collections of illustrations over time so its best to take note of what they say while also adding a pinch of salt to some of their comments.

Above all keep on going and never give up.

August 2010, French filmmaker Vincent Moon and Efterklang’s 8 piece-live band met up on an island in the Danish country side. The objective was to shoot a film. A film with the same length as an album, and a film full of performances, experiments and collaborations.

Over an intense period of 4 days Efterklang collaborated with more than 200 local musicians, kids and their own parents, creating new performances and interpretations of songs from their Magic Chairs album. It was all filmed by Vincent Moon who same time conducted several filmic and musical experiments with Efterklang as his dedicated play mates.
