Gardening at the turn of the 19th century had more challenges than today. During the 1890s, Adams House gardens were located below the home on Sherman Street. Over the past eight years, the garden areas at the Historic Adams House have evolved bringing to fruition a flood of splendid color. Creators Rob Simon and Tom Thorson did extensive research into the conditions at the Adams House, pairing it with the climate in Deadwood, the ground conditions and the available landscape. The work of their labors is evident in the gardens today.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (7/15/09) - There are many ways to draw inspiration from one of the nation’s most consequential and enduring patriotic symbols – Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Just consider – the work of this massive carving, the largest monument in the world, was accomplished during a time of great national challenge and hardship – the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Between October 4, 1927, and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the colossal faces of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of the great experiment in democracy that is America. What many might consider America’s greatest challenge – World War II – was still ahead, and the years to come would bring a full measure of triumphs and tragedies.

THE BADLANDS, S.D. (7/15/09) - It is ironic. This land of sharp ridges, steep-walled canyons, gullies, pyramids and knobs has been so ruthlessly ravaged by wind and water that it has become picturesque. The badlands are a wonderland of bizarre, colorful spires and pinnacles, massive buttes and deep gorges. The forces which carved these features have not only created a unique topography; they have given a strange beauty to this almost desolate land.
So much beauty that more than 160 square miles of it have been reserved for inclusion in our National Parks System, the United States' premier collection of natural treasures.

HILL CITY, S.D. (5/21/09) - Running between Hill City and Keystone, Black Hills Central Railroad's 1880 Train offers visitors an entertaining, scenic ride through the pine-covered Black Hills of South Dakota. But the 1880 Train also serves as a modern-day reminder that steam-powered trains once played a vital role in the development of the West.

In the early 1950's, William B. Heckman took steps to create an old-fashioned railroad that ran on steam power, not diesel. He also wanted to preserve a piece of American history that deserved to be more than a static display in a museum. He and his partners vowed that "there should be in operation at least one working steam railroad, for boys of all ages who share America's fondness for the rapidly vanishing steam locomotive."

June Harvey, author and current resident of Creswell, Oregon, has released An Incredible Life: True Stories Told by Clarence Riggs. In this biographical narration, June's father shares fascinating accounts of growing up in the horse-and-buggy days in rural South Dakota, near-death experiences, struggling through the Great Depression, farming in the 30s and 40s, owning and operating a sawmill, and his experiences as a hunter, fisherman, athlete, and entrepreneur.

"My dad was a risk taker," said Harvey, "and his life demonstrated the strength of the human spirit. He had courage to prevail in circumstances that seemed insurmountable. A lot of his stories reveal how hope, determination, and perseverance can lead to success and prosperity."
