Return stolen artefacts, Benin monarch tells UK

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has reiterated his call on the British Government to return all artefacts stolen during the invasion of the Benin kingdom by British troops in 1897.

Oba Ewuare made the call when he received the Director of the British Museum, Hartwig Fischer, at his palace in Benin, Edo State.

The monarch, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Desmond Agbama, on Tuesday, emphasised the need for the items, comprising bronze artworks, to be brought back home due to their emotional connection with the Benin people.

“The Oba of Benin reiterated the need to return the stolen artefacts from the various museums across the world, pointing out that the Benin people are emotionally attached to it, even though they had been speaking for the Benin kingdom wherever they are in the world,” the statement read in part.

The Oba told the director of the museum that the palace was reviving the bronze casting guild responsible for producing the artwork in order to keep it alive.

He, however, welcomed the idea of the museum to collaborate with the palace to develop a world-class museum to accommodate the stolen artefacts, adding that it would not only be of benefit to Edo people but also to Nigerians and tourists.

Oba Ewuare II, who also informed the visitors of the forthcoming launch of a book, “The Red Book,” noted that the Benin culture was far from going extinct as erroneously believed by some historians and academics in some part of the world.

Earlier, Fischer told the monarch that he was in the palace to inquire about the possibility of the British Museum offering assistance, in terms of fundraising and training of personnel, for the proposed museum in the Oba’s palace.

He also expressed the support of the museum for the Oba Ewuare II Foundation.

Lupita Nyong'o Was Told She'd Never Find A Husband Because Of Her Dark Skin Color

We're certain it's the combination of Lupita Nyong'o's incredible talent (see: Academy Award) and killer looks (see: red carpet slayage) that have landed her on the cover of Glamour's 24th Women of the Year cover.
However the Kenyan actress, who is being honored at the magazine's annual star-studded event on November 10 in New York City, has also captured our hearts with her outspoken stance on standards of beauty. And the Lancome spokeswoman chatted candidly about her views in Glamour's December issue.
“European standards of beauty are something that plague the entire world -- the idea that darker skin is not beautiful, that light skin is the key to success and love," Nyong'o told Glamour. "Africa is no exception."
While Nyong'o has encountered colorism in her adult life, it's been a issue she's dealt with from childhood.
"When I was in the second grade, one of my teachers said, ‘Where are you going to find a husband? How are you going to find someone darker than you?’ I was mortified, the 32-year-old actress told Glamour. "I remember seeing a commercial where a woman goes for an interview and doesn’t get the job. Then she puts a cream on her face to lighten her skin, and she gets the job! This is the message: that dark skin is unacceptable. I definitely wasn’t hearing this from my immediate family -- my mother never said anything to that effect -- but the voices from the television are usually much louder than the voices of your parents.”
Sad, but true.

I celebrated Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s re-election, possibly to his consternation, if he got to know, and his supporters’, who are always riled by my constant critical appraisal of his administration and political activities. To the governor, despite being a younger brother, I was an enemy. Weeks to his re-election, he laid into me at the launch of Professor Wale Adebanwi’s book in Lagos. The condescension in the public upbraid reeked revenge. I spent the night of the day “working” his re-election. Yes, I collaborated with some of his own to do “covert campaign”. Campaigns everywhere cost time, money and energy. Mine was not an exception. I have strong commitments of those involved not to breathe an air of it to him. What I did would also not be of public knowledge until his exit, God willing, in 2018. He, however owes me nothing, because he sent me, on no errands.

Yes, my support for him was partly clannish, but not ethnically-periscopical. He loves governance. He has passion for leadership. He is ambitious to be a legend in public service. Even when he is not going in the right direction, he is always in a hurry to deliver. Because he loves to dare, I was convinced he could be different.
But I refused to be persuaded to turn this space to his mega-phone. It was and still is, the only avenue to tell him hurtful truth anytime his hurrying holes a gulf between him and the led. God willing, nothing will change for the next four years, because he must be helped to finish strong. The grossly-miscontrued, stomach-rumbling three-series “Before Osun Falls” was to save him from himself.
First message for Mr. Governor, don’t be too quick to lock down names on enemy-list. Your supposed enemies, particularly in PDP, won re-election for you. Sycophants would always be around you, racing your endorphin, the feel-good hormone. But it would be fool-hardy to believe them that O’this, O’that alone got you re-elected. Information at my disposal says five local governments were won for you by PDP “renegades”, excellent outing in another three local governments was also due to fifth columnists within opposition fold, particularly those who could not swallow Iyiola Omisore’s candidacy but didn’t want to defect and the required two-thirds, in another two local governments. The mathematics of all these not being part of your votes, is obvious.
You said to me during the Lagos encounter that because I am younger in age, I wasn’t qualified to critique your acts in government. Without necessarily re-opening old wounds, the education reform that nearly cost your job, was hewed by an Octogenarian Nobel Laureate. Those who modified the acceptable version were of perceivable inferior intellect and younger in age. If the mindset that received my admonitions, was same upon which aides’ counsel were poured in the past, the time for change is now.
Sir, it is cool to be working “the enigma” concept with aides, but making those lower in status and age, feel worthless, won’t be the way to go. I am sure the governor will appreciate his own better now, because bits of that victory belonged to different efforts. Being a studious person, given to logic, the governor must have by now, done an objective analysis of the election figures. If the winning percentage is a measure of the projected awesome performance of the governor, then something would be amiss. It is either that performance is over-hyped or not totally appreciated by the people. That means there are things to be done differently but the good news is the spread of the winning votes, which would translate into proportionate governance delivery across the state. Without impugning the person of the first runner-up, a lesser baggage-laden candidate with humility to woo offended party members, could have possibly consigned the governor to the “parallel government” option. I say this because of those who would keep singing “Aregbesola ma basere lo (keep doing things same way). Apart from Osogboland and Ijesaland, other areas where the governor had impressive figures, had obvious imprints of last-minute beautiful brides, courted to divorce PDP. He should find out why O’ Performance was not enough in those places. In the build-up to the election, he was badly lacerated with religion, capital-flight, debt profile, school re-classification, public service welfare and comportment horse-whip.
Infact, it was a last-minute snatching from Omisore’s jaw. His subdued visage the day after the election, is a testament to a victory forged on the altar of compromise, bending backward and forward, sensible sacrifices and humbling letting-go. That is why political promises made in the heat of re-election moments should be fully redeemed because one may run to the same shelter twice to escape being soaked. I know commitments to heavyweights like Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Isiaka Adeleke, Fatai Akinbade (Aregbesola did not win his Olaoluwa LG for free), Olubunmi Etteh et al, would alter APC’s equations substantially, but the outcome of Kayode Fayemi reneging on Ayo Fayose senatorial promise, should communicate enough lessons.
A pre-election poll put Aregbesola ahead of his party in popularity. It means any other candidate would perform below his average performance in the election. Does this communicate anything to APC about its future in the South-West? It is now getting down to personalities and not platforms. It should guide Aregbesola as APC leader in picking candidates for other elections in the state in 2015. The party may be also headed for a worsting in Yorubaland in 2015 if internal democracy is not embraced.
Aregbesola may consider it an impunity for a younger brother to counsel him on governance but he would have no choice in the next four year because I have a vote to protect. It was my aged mother’s. She got out by 7:13 am to vote him. May I also remind him that only genuine brothers speak the truth to one another.

Patti LaBelle joins Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe for ‘American Horror Story’

Music legend Patti LaBelle is joining the cast of FX’s critically acclaimed series, American Horror Story.
LaBelle joins existing cast members Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates for American Horror Story Season 4, which will focus on the last American freak show and will be set in Jupiter, Florida, in the 1950’s.
LaBelle will play Sidibe’s mother, a local townie, who begins to unravel the deadly secrets of Twisty the clown killer.
LaBelle is the second music icon to appear on the series. Stevie Nicks guest starred as herself and appeared on two episodes on Coven, the third installment of American Horror Story.
American Horror Story: Freak Show debuts in October on FX.

From Lupita’s People cover to Pharrell’s ‘Marilyn Monroe’: Dark skinned beauty fad sparks backlash

Pharrell’s “Marilyn Monroe” cover is visually stunning. The chocolate face against that fire engine red was striking and super fierce. Plus, the model herself is gorgeous.
Then I saw the cover of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful” issue with Lupita Nyong’o, and my soul did the running man because: YES!!!
She has taken the world by storm, and she stays giving me black velvet moonlight tea for my fever. Lupita is perpetually looking like she’s unable to flaw.
So why are people upset at both Pharrell and People magazine right now? Because they feel like both parties are pandering to disgruntled dark girls, and they think it’s cheap and condescending. I understand one more than the other.
I get why people are mad at Pharrell, and I’m actually surprised that I’m not. I’ve certainly told people how many seats to occupy for less obvious things. I see all the points that people are making about the name of the song and the cover. Why didn’t he call it something else like “Eartha Kitt” or “Dorothy Dandridge?”
Also, his choice to use a woman who is chocolate is being seen as an attempt aims to get folks to shut up about the cover of his GIRL album. On some “FINE, GINA! I will marry you. Are you happy now?” thing. I see it, and I acknowledge the frustration of my sisthrens.
Even so, I’m not upset. Maybe I give Skateboard P a longer rope than others because I love the song “Happy” and the fact that he refuses to age. Does he wake up and bathe in unicorn tears and towel off with phoenix feathers? I just want him to stop being selfish and tell us about the voodoo he do (shout out to Lauryn) and share the secrets to looking 25 for 45 years.
Pharrell using this beautiful, dark model for the cover of this song doesn’t upset me, and it’s because I do want to think he’s taking a direction to fix what people spoke about in the past. I wasn’t upset at the cover of GIRL either because, in spite of it being somewhat monochromatic, I’ve never gotten “I hate dark black women” vibes from that dude in particular.
However, could this Marilyn Monroe cover seem a bit cheap? Sure. Would he have done it had he not received backlash from that first cover? Not sure.
Honestly, I see this as a can’t win for losing situation. Had he ignored critics, he’d really be showing that he had no damns to give about the feelings of those who felt shafted by his lack of mahogany. And this time, he blatantly placed a chocolate lady on the cover, and folks feel like he’s trolling. If we’re mad at the cover with the two white women and one ethnically ambiguous biracial woman, then we need to know what we want him to do to make it right.
Now, as for the folks who are throwing hateration in Lupita’s dancerie for being on the cover of People, I want them to please tuck in their salty. It boggles my mind that some people are really questioning her presence on that cover and whether it’s some sort of pity move by the magazine’s team. It reminds me of when she won the Academy Award for her role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave and folks were upset because she won for playing a slave.
Why can’t we celebrate this moment with the purest motives and joy? I want us to be able to lay these burdens down even for a hot millisecond, because we carry this complex so close to the chest that it gives me heartburn.
Do we think we’re not good enough that when we land on a major magazine cover we need to be cynical about how we got there? I know beauty is subjective, but it is undeniable that Lupita has been shutting down red carpets for the past six months with her style, and she belongs on that list and on that cover. This isn’t some pandering move.
You don’t have to be giving Pharrell or People magazine pats on the back. However, I don’t think we should be so dismissive of the presence of these two women who happen to be dark on these mediums. I think we’re victims of the singular story, and we’re carrying that with us and questioning our own worthiness to belong.
Right now, we don’t see enough of ourselves (black people) in media (TV, magazine, radio), so we place a lot of weight on those who are (and on shows we appear on). Every artist is carrying the hopes and dreams of our tomorrows, and every misstep is placed on a mental list of how wrong they are.
So I’m gonna sit this battle out. Maybe I’ll tap in for the next one. But on this, I just want us to enjoy the small victory and say WERKKK!

Lupita Nyong'o on Winning the Oscar, Becoming the Face of Lancôme, and Her First Cover of Vogue

In little more than a year, Lupita Nyong’o has made the leap from serious student to Oscar-winning actress and head-turning fashion star. Hamish Bowles catches up with Hollywood’s newest golden girl. Marrakech in May is unseasonably tagine-hot. Hapless tourists are being felled by sunstroke merely from sauntering across the city’s pulsing medina square, which is all but abandoned by the native food and trinket traders, snake-charmers, and storytellers who will throng it in the desert cool of evening.

But in the oasis sanctuary of the Ksar Char-Bagh, all is balmy dolce far niente. A luxe spa hostelry built in imitation of a castle-like fort in the middle of the Palmeraie, it has crenellated towers that hide a private dipping pool and afford views down to a central marbled courtyard modeled on Granada’s Moorish Alhambra, and across the palm groves to the distant Atlas Mountains. Guests are lounging poolside in the shade of an allée of date palms, seemingly oblivious of the Academy Award–winning deity in their midst, who is the focus of the Vogue cover shoot in full fluster around them.

Lupita Nyong’o is cucumber-cool, as beautiful and hieratic as an ancient Egyptian statue of a cat goddess, dressed in Prada’s magenta Deco-print dress licked with silver that is dazzling against her luminous skin. Lupita instinctively falls into graceful attitudes; she can’t help herself. “She knows the camera, she knows her angles,” notes an approving Phyllis Posnick, Vogue’s Executive Fashion Editor, who, it should be noted, does not suffer fools gladly but is in some kind of awe of this particular subject.

It is easy to see why. Lupita, 31, is as preternaturally poised as a prewar debutante, with a carefully modulated, cut-crystal accent and a quaint use of English to match. When she discusses one of the most harrowing scenes in the infinitely harrowing 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen’s magisterial movie in which she made her unforgettable screen debut as the tormented slave girl Patsey, she describes her character, delicately, as being “completely disrobed.”

At the BAFTAs at London’s Royal Opera House in February, I happened to follow Lupita’s blindingly flash-lit entrance on the red carpet as she artfully manipulated the emerald-green organza Dior ball gown billowing around her. There was nothing in this swanlike apparition to suggest how stressful the relentless awards-show circuit can be. “Still waters run deep,” she explains with an enigmatic smile.

In all, Lupita attended 60-some promotional events during a grueling five-month odyssey that began with the Toronto Film Festival in early September 2013 (where she first blazoned the promise of fashion stardom in Prada’s white jersey goddess dress, trellised with golden sequins). Small wonder that The New York Times’s Guy Trebay noted the “military precision” with which her management and stylists approached the campaign to conquer the red carpet and burn Lupita’s image into the collective consciousness—garnering her, among other things, a lucrative contract with Lancôme. (As Isabella Rossellini, the international face of the brand for more than a decade, beginning in 1983, describes it, “Having this contract is winning the lottery” and provided her with “the freedom to make only the films that I liked and not the films I didn’t.”)

Lupita appreciates the fact that Lancôme’s brand ambassadors, who currently include Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, and Penélope Cruz, “are very different, unique women—it’s not about conforming to an already established idea of what is beautiful, and I like that.” In her meetings with the beauty house’s executives, she echoed powerful sentiments she expressed in a speech earlier in the year at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. “I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful,” she told the audience that day, and described the sensation of having a flower bloom inside her when the Sudanese-born Alek Wek appeared on the modeling scene in the mid-nineties.

Over dinner at Le Tobsil, a spice-colored riad restaurant in the medina, she tells me, “I felt how valuable and vital such representation is.”

As we are serenaded by the hypnotic chant of the Gnawa musicians in the adjoining courtyard, I suggest to Lupita that she must have had a completely surreal year. “Indeed I did,” she says, laughing. “It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life. People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me—before I recognized them!” Her first real intimation that her life was changing—probably forever—came after the SAG Awards in January, when she arrived late one night at the airport and was mobbed by paparazzi. “For a split second I looked behind me to see who they were flashing at—and it was me!” she remembers. “That was, I think, the beginning of the end of my anonymity.”

Though, as she recalls with a laugh, she lived for three years as a student in pants and a sweatshirt, Lupita has always enjoyed fashion. Growing up in Kenya, she designed many of her own clothes “because it was cheaper than buying retail,” including her own prom dress when she graduated from the all-boys high school she attended in Nairobi—girls were accepted only in two advanced-placement classes. “It was a velvet miniskirt with a matching little top and an iridescent silver translucent fabric that flowed to the ground,” she remembers. “It was kind of ridiculous, but it was fabulous at the time.”

Lupita realized that she needed a more considered approach to her fashion choices as she prepared for the formidable season of appearances for 12 Years a Slave. She had worked with and befriended Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary) on Non-Stop (a rollicking suspense vehicle for Liam Neeson that was released two days before the Academy Awards, with Lupita—in what more than one critic described as a meager role—as a flight attendant alongside Dockery). Dockery introduced her to her stylist, Micaela Erlanger, a protégée of the late Annabel Tollman, who helped shape the red-carpet personas of Scarlett Johansson and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, among others.

Lupita arrived for their first meeting armed with a Pinterest board of fashion ideas that appealed to her: “Bold color, interesting print, interesting silhouette—simple but architectural and feminine,” Erlanger remembers. “Elegance, but with a sense of humor.”

The pair proceeded to meet for “epic six-hour fittings,” says Lupita. “It’s a job; it’s work, you know!” she tells me. “We’d just try, try, try, try, try, try, try. At first it was very daunting, but I ended up really having fun with it.” Their choices have run the gamut from Christopher Kane and Sacai to custom Prada and Chanel Haute Couture. Most times, she adds, “especially for the bigger awards, the dress let me know it was going to be worn. It’s quite scary when you fall in love with a dress, because it’s nothing to do with your brain. It’s like a gut reaction.” The caped scarlet Ralph Lauren gown for the Golden Globes was a case in point: “We got goose bumps,” remembers Erlanger of that fitting. “I told her, ‘This is going to be a game-changer.’ And it was.”

Lupita was cast in Miu Miu’s spring campaign alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Elle Fanning, and Bella Heathcote, and attended the label’s fashion show in Paris, dressed in a collared burgundy sweater under the sort of stiff little coat that Britain’s royal children have traditionally worn—the prim Good Girl foil to her front-row neighbor, Rihanna, who was working an eighties banjee-girl look in a runway-fresh Prada shearling coat, a plunging décolleté, and a Cleopatra bob.

As for Lupita’s short crop, which she has worn since she was nineteen, hairstylists Ted Gibson, Larry Sims, and Vernon François have worked such iterations as a two-pronged Mohawk, a Grace Jones flat-top crew cut, a widow’s peak, and a Gumby. The bold and adventurous makeup choices she makes with Nick Barose, meanwhile, annex beauty as a virtual accessory to her wardrobe. “You spend so much time with your glam squad,” says Lupita. “Their energy is the last thing you experience before you leave the hotel room—and they make it fun and light and manageable.”

Before she embarked on her fashion marathon, “everyone said, ‘Brace yourself, Lupita! Keep a granola bar in that clutch of yours!’ ” she confides. “I didn’t really understand what they meant, and it was only once it was past that I realized that my body had been holding on by a thread to get through this very intense experience. Nothing can prepare you for awards season,” she continues. “The red carpet feels like a war zone, except you cannot fly or fight; you just have to stand there and take it.” She considers for a moment. “I hope they don’t make that the big quote!” she says, laughing. “Because that would be sad! Tell them not to do that!”

It is understandable that Lupita would hesitate to trivialize the idea of internecine strife. Her current beau, the Somali-born rapper K’naan, has a preternatural serenity of his own that belies a childhood of unimaginable ferocity in his civil war–torn homeland, when he saw playmates die. (He fled with his family to Toronto, where, like so many of his disenchanted, rootless compatriots, he turned to a life of petty crime before reinventing himself through music, achieving global recognition when he adapted the lyrics of his anthemic “Wavin’ Flag” to become Coke’s official 2010 FIFA World Cup song.)

Lupita’s childhood, though privileged, was hardly settled. Her father, Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, a political-science professor, opposed the government of Daniel arap Moi, whose turbulent presidency lasted 24 years. Nyong’o’s brother “disappeared,” and Nyong’o was eventually self-exiled to Mexico, where Lupita was born in 1983. (Her name, in the symbolic Luo tradition, is a play on the word luo itself, which means “to follow,” and Peter is her father’s name, so that run together they suggest “I followed Peter to Mexico.” Lupita also speaks Swahili.) The family eventually returned to Nairobi, where her father continued to face intermittent persecution by the system, which changed with the election of Mwai Kibaki in 2002. He is currently a senator in the Kenyan parliament. He is also, let it be noted, an actor manqué, with a passion for Shakespeare, instilling in his daughter, along with her five siblings, an appetite for performance since childhood. “My family is very close-knit,” she explains. “My aunt, who was an actor herself, would get all us children together to write and perform plays. I loved manipulating my parents’ emotions.” When her mother, Dorothy, cried out at the tragic denouement of one of the plays, Lupita remembers “feeling very powerful.” They are clearly close; Dorothy has often accompanied her to awards shows, as have her siblings, including her acting-mad little brother, Peter. In Morocco, hearing that Dorothy fretted that her daughter wasn’t eating enough, Lupita spelled out I Love You with her Ksar Char-Bagh breakfast fruit and sent it to her as a charming freeze-frame iPhone video on Mother’s Day.

At fourteen, Lupita secured her first legitimate role, playing Juliet with the Phoenix Players, Nairobi’s “vibrant semiprofessional theater,” and experienced the same thrill when the performance brought the audience to tears at the end. “That was when I realized that I really loved this thing called playacting.”

Lupita’s father has a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Chicago, and, like many middle-class Kenyans, Lupita was expected to continue her higher education abroad. So in 2003, at the age of 20, she began taking classes in film and African studies at Hampshire College in Massachusetts—an experience that she found to be “a major culture shock” after her self-described “very conservative” schooling in Kenya. “I felt like I needed rules,” she says, “but in the end, it taught me that I am very self-motivated—I can make my own rules!”

While at Hampshire, Lupita went home to Kenya and managed to finagle herself into working on the set of The Constant Gardener, which was shooting there. She met its star Ralph Fiennes and confided in him her passion to act. He firmly told her not to pursue it as a career unless it was something “I couldn’t live without”—advice that, as she admits, “gave me pause.”

In Kenya, as she notes, acting “wasn’t a viable career path; it’s not necessarily seen as a prestigious profession.” Expectations ran high: Her cousin Isis Nyong’o (a former VP and managing director of the African operations of InMobi, the independent mobile advertising network) has been cited by Forbes as one of Africa’s most successful women.

After undergraduate studies, Lupita returned home to Kenya, and she experienced something of an existential crisis before having “this vivid image of myself at 60, looking back at my life and really regretting that I hadn’t tried to be an actor. That was the dawn that I needed to start pursuing this.”

She applied to Yale; if it didn’t work out, she would return to production. She had already written, directed, and produced a documentary for her Hampshire thesis project: In My Genes, about a friend’s experience living with albinism in Kenya, where the condition is considered a bad omen and those born with it are subject to discrimination—and worse (“I traveled all those thousands of miles just to learn about my next-door neighbor!” says Lupita).

Without a theater library in Nairobi, Lupita reverted to her Juliet, and to high school pieces to perform for her Yale application, which involved auditioning on one day and waiting to hear whether you were going to be called back a month later.

During the interview, she was asked when she was planning to return to Kenya. “After callbacks,” she replied. “They laughed, but it was true. I had to make that call, and that was of course very scary and presumptuous, but I was not going to sell myself short.” Lupita was accepted but delayed her arrival to appear in Shuga, the groundbreaking Kenyan soap opera that was produced by the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, in collaboration with the Kenyan government, intended to promote “responsible sexual behavior and tolerance.” (It was aired in 46 African countries and subsequently in over sixteen more around the world.)

When she finally arrived at Yale, among so many dedicated students, the experience was revelatory, even if the schedule was unforgiving—“In one day you’re playing five different characters,” and between class and rehearsals she was often studying from 9:00 in the morning until 1:00 the following morning. But even so, as she prepared for her final-semester showcases (presented in New York and Los Angeles to a packed house of agents, managers, producers, and casting directors), she was also working on an audition tape for the role of Patsey.

By his account, Steve McQueen had already seen “thousands” of actresses for the role, but when he saw that tape, as he told Vogue, “It was like looking for a piece of glass on a sandy beach and finding a jewel. . . . She has this aura about her.”

Working with his cinematographer, Sean Bobbitt (“They are like tango dancers,” notes Lupita), and filming her scenes in an almost documentary way, McQueen (who won Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize in 1999 as a video artist) potently captured that aura onscreen.

“I was really nervous about seeing myself in 12 Years a Slave,” says Lupita, “because it had been such a profound experience in all ways. I remember it being one of the most joyful times in my life—and also one of the most sorrowful. I didn’t want my experience to be a vain one. But I will say that when I watched it, my heartstrings were pulled so tight for Solomon that I couldn’t go into the ego trip. I cried—I mean, I was inconsolable. I wept for an hour after the movie.”

Lupita’s tears were the beginning of a journey that led to her Academy Award. “I had already gotten the nomination, which was truly, truly astounding, and enough,” she remembers. “Even in my dreams of being an actor, my dream was not in the celebrity. My dream was in the work that I wanted to do.”

When her name was read out, the experience was, as she recalls, “very confusing, very numbing. I was just repeating my name in my head, so I didn’t know whether I had said my name or they had said my name! And then my little brother screamed, and time was suspended and it was just noise in my head.”

As Lupita gathered those voluminous silk georgette pleats of her custom Prada skirts, she remembers that all she could think was “Don’t fall on those stairs” because, as she drolly explains, “it’s not cute if you follow Jennifer Lawrence—it’s not cute if you’re the second one!”

“People are still filling me in on what happened after,” she adds. “My mother says I cried during the speech; I don’t believe her.”

Those waters do indeed run deep: She was memorably poised, her acceptance speech a model of erudition. “When I look down at this golden statue,” she said, “may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

So it was that Lupita appeared to spring into our lives fully formed, both as a consummate movie actress receiving her profession’s highest honor and as an intriguing fashion star and superlative beauty icon. She is quick to note that her “red carpet” self “is just one aspect of me; it doesn’t represent the entirety of me, which I am at peace with.”

She keeps her private life just that. “The safest thing is when I’m indoors in my world,” she says, which for the moment is an apartment in Brooklyn. When she isn’t cooking at home (“I like to cook whole fish. And I make some mean salads”), she is enjoying the borough’s unpretentious restaurants and bars.

The complicated question of how to follow Lupita’s dream debut is one that has clearly been exercising the actress and her management, who recently confirmed that she will be providing the voice for Raksha in Disney’s live-action/CGI hybrid revisiting of The Jungle Book. The news that she’d also been cast alongside Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie in J. J. Abrams’s Star Wars: Episode VII, out Christmas 2015, meanwhile, sent the Internet into a collective frenzy. “I’m going to a galaxy far, far away,” Lupita told me with a laugh as the announcement was made in early June.

In the meantime, she says, “I’m really hungry to get back onstage. It flexes muscles that you need to do the more subtle film work.” She is particularly keen on the writing of the actor-playwright Danai Gurira and loves her plays Eclipsed, about the Liberian civil war, and The Convert, set in southern Africa, about the birth of Christianity on the continent. Like her boyfriend, K’naan, she is very engaged by the myriad issues confronting their homelands. She recently signed on to both coproduce—in partnership with Brad Pitt’s Plan B and two other partners—and star in an adaptation of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed novel about the African immigrant experience, Americanah. “The book blew me away,” she tells me. “This was a project I wanted to work on, and I pursued it with all my being. It’s an unabashedly romantic book, really inspiring and uplifting. I found myself in her pages.”

On top of all that, she has a yen for some more Shakespeare. “I thought I’d had my fill at Yale, but . . . oh, boy, I guess there’s nothing like the Bard!” she says, laughing. “I absolutely adore Twelfth Night.” She adds that in the future, Cleopatra and “Lady M” are top of her wish list.

As a child watching Star Wars for the first time, Lupita was intrigued by R2-D2 and C-3PO. “They just resonated with me,” she says. “Being able to convey emotions with just a few digital sounds—it speaks of good storytelling.” That storytelling is still holding her in thrall. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to be working in these fantastical realms,” she says. “They’re worlds away from 12 Years a Slave, that’s for sure—but that kind of diversity is what dreams are made of.”

AS the issue of who takes over from Dr. Bukola Saraki as the next governor of Kwara State gathers momentum, a female group, comprising students from various higher institutions of learning in the state, has vowed to walk the streets of Ilorin unclothed if Senator Gbemisola Saraki failed to contest for governorship in 2011.

The group also said that it would go on exile if the senator refused to contest.

The group, under the aegis of distinct Ladies of Gbemisola Saraki Forum (DLGSF), while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, on Sunday evening, stated that the senator should come out and declare her intention to contest for the position.

According to the Coordinator of the group, Miss Bola Babs, whether the senator is from the family of Saraki or not is immaterial to her political ambition, “after all Dr Olusola Saraki, who is the father of both, has the final say over the matter of who becomes the governor of Kwara.”

Her words: “For sometime now, we have been drumming it to the ears of Senator Gbemisola Saraki to go out and represent the women folk come 2011 but she has not answered us. We want her consent to become the next governor of this state yet she has refused to answer us.

ope o! hopefully Ms saraki will lead the way - fortunately it is misses and not mamas that will be doing the baring this time around

If saraki can pull this through, he would have confirmed himself as the all time godfather of kwara. From Islamic viewpoint, for which Ilorin is known, a female governor will be a difficult "market".

Since Kwara is one of the northern states that support zoning, I expect my broda GEJ to exploit this vulnerability in saraki agenda and win some reasonable votes which would have been difficult under a united kwara.

there is a fellow teh guy seems to be leaning towards, and it is not the daughter

even bukola is clearly against it.

it appears that the daugher and her mum are the ones pursuing this agenda

as to other contestants not endorsed by saraki - forget it - the man has teh state locked down . and one has to give him credit where due - without the traditional methods of ballot box stuffing, violence, intimidation etal

Unfortunately, she is well entitled to go for it! na democrazy after all, i think she might just settle for deputy, that's if her term at the senate is done already i don't see her anywhere else if the senate party is over

All these womenn from teepeeah's generation will not cut it and no police will waste his time arresting them for obscenity and to be honest, it will not qualify for obscenity if no bystander is arooused.

When are they protesting? I hope the Gbemi woman will be part of it. I will take a leave from my office and relocate to kwara.

If Kwara state property of Saraki family. That Bush senior and Bush junior were president in US was as a result of what they can give.

What has Bukola don't in 8 years that make him outstanding. And who is Gbemi and what has she done' the only time I heard of her is when armed robber attacked her house in Abuja. I have not seen her contribute in senator floor. I assume she is there to make up the number of senators.

I think the proposed protest promises to be a vast improvement over the Ekiti version. This one is going to be done by real girls and should easily qualify as a tourist attraction.

silly people if they like they can walk unclothed from Ilorin through Ajase ipo, Offa, Omunaran, Shaare, Pategi, Lafiagi, Kiama, kosubosu and other towns in kwara state, the will of Kwarans must prevail, we are tired of the way Saraki is marginalizing us, Kwara state is too big for a man to decide in his sitting room what our future will be. If you are a Kwaran you will understand what i mean , I am a proud Kwaran but due to the kind of marginaliztion we are subjected to in the southern Kwara(mostly christian and Yoruba origin) ,we clamor for the split of Kwara, due to constant and persistent clamoring from the people of the Kwara south they(kwara central , Ilorin precisly) begin to beef us, due to some saboteur among us they are leaking all our secret to them, go over the number of notable commissioners in Kwara you will see that most of them are from Ilorin( who claims 3 frm the five local govt from kwara central) while the largest senatorial area (kwara south suffers) , although the southern Kwara has always been the only threat to the ruling Kwara south thanks to the bunch of dumb(sitting and accepting to be marginalized) that call their self Kwara north , There is no element of Federal character( or we say state character) since this third republic, from 1999-2003(Mohammed Lawal , Kwara Central), 2003 till date (Bukola Saraki, Kwara Central) so when is it going to be the turn of the Northern Kwara and the southern Kwara? the only spoke man from the north( Isa bio Ibrahim) had been silenced by his appointment as the sport minister while the one people believe to have been speaking for the people of the kwara south( Alhaji Shaaba Lafiagi) is also a member of the kicthen cabinet of Saraki, but as far as the people of Kwara south no one is there to help although we hold the position of the deputy Gov but nothing good hasnt come from Elder Joel Ogundeji , we need revolution in Kwara, and has you've deduced from my writing above you will see that i am agitating for the right of the Kwara south cos that is where i belong and i am saying that , this is our time no matter what anybody say,

Because for too long many of the Black Race have abused, dishonored you, degraded and denied you your crown, Queen of Queens,Queen Mother of the Black Race, Black Beauty Supreme! From you all the beauty of the Black Race springs forth.In fact all the world’s beauty springs from you,Mother of all beauty of all the races of the world! Your Black midnight,licorice,dark black chocolate,beauty, is Blackness concentrated in your beautiful “Black-blueberry”{3} face!

First in the order of creation is always given respect by Afrikan tradition. The 1st wife, the 1st elder, the 1st kingdom, the 1st original inhabitants, of the earth-all are considered with honor. So it should be with Black Beauty-our darkest -skinned Sisters are the 1st Mothers of the Universe-Black as a color came before all the many tones of brown,red,yellow and white. But for too long our Dark-skinned Queens have not been given the respect and place of honor they deserve. IN FACT THE WHITE BOY HAS INTIATED the cycle of reversing the true order of things by turning upside down the pyramid of Beauty, and placing white-light on top and relegating the most beautiful Black-skinned Beauties to rock bottom!

So Black people have been taught well how to deny our most

beautiful one her crown, taught how to reject our Blackest, most Afrikan features, full lips and nose and mouth and woollest hair, for the weaker characteristics of the white race. Shame on Black people! When will we wake up to this Black Beauty concentrated, from whence all our lesser beauty comes. When will we give the crown of crowns,the throne of thrones, to the Blackest Queen of Queens?

Most of us who suffer from”mulatto-mentality” and “yellow fever”, as Fela, our great Nigerian Musician calls it, will go on and on about what about us lighter queens-aren’t we/they beautiful too, yet you/we should be aware that such queens have gotten all the play in the past and that even in Black Egypt one of the reasons for its downfall was the allowing the lighter ones of the race, to place themselves above the rest of us in the name of lightness and pride of light-closer/to/whiteness. So if we’re yellow,to light brown/red, then we should give respect where respect is due and not live off of the artificial white thrill of having “white features” as if it is an advantage. Where would you be without your BLACKEST great Grandmother? We should honor the Blackest part of ourselves, thus giving us true pride of Blackness, not verbal signifyin’ but real testifyin’ that BLACK is beautiful! If the Blackest, most Afrikan-featured Sister isn’t respected as the Supreme Beauty of the Race,the Black woman’s beauty is not really respected at all for what it really is(only in terms of how closer to white we look). We all reflect the strengths of this concentrated beauty in ourselves, all the manifestations of how Blackness can present itself are seen in our faces. Down to the milk-lightest of us, our Blackness is what dominates us whether physically or mentally. But the Mother is greater than the child and so the Blackest is greater than all the other tones of the Black Race. If we don’t respect our Blackest Queen, we don’t respect our True Black selves. We must have a Black value for BLACKNESS in features and skin tone. We must have a Black Standard of Beauty based on the Black-skinned woman. ALL PRAISES DUE TO OUR BLACK-SKINNED QUEEN-MOTHERS!
