Yet Another Black Man Shot By Police!!!

Yet another reason why we must attend the National Black People’s Day of Action & Build the National Afrikan People’s Parliament.

A young Afrikan man was gunned down by the police in highly suspicious circumstances on Friday 17^th February, in Forest Hill, where this Year’s National Black People’s Day of Action rally and conference is scheduled for March 2, 2012.

Known only as George to the public, the 25 year old Ghanaian allegedly attempted to break into a car and then attacked 3 police officers with a knife, causing them to call for armed back up. After discharging four rounds of taser of 50,000 volts each, the police claimed that this had no effect on him, necessitating pumping five rounds of lethal bullets into him. Mercifully, he did not die, but was rushed to hospital fighting for his life.

It seems incredible that 4 rounds of taser could not disable a man when one is often more than sufficient; or for that matter, that several police officers, with batons, trained to disarm suspects, could not subdue him without resorting to a shoot to kill policy.

This assumes of course that there is any truth in the police’s story. Mark Duggan, shot to death last August, was falsely accused of shooting at the police first, when he was not even armed. Smiley Culture allegedly stabbed himself through the heart twice; a feat said to be physically impossible by medical experts. The question is, “How long shall they kill our young men while we stand aside and look?”

We have no unity, no organisation, no representation! As a result of this the state abuses us and kill our young men with impunity. It is time we unite and organise around a national agenda designed to promote preserve and protect our best interest; especially our children and young people’s. It’s time we unite, organise and build the National Afrikan People’s Parliament.

in New York City recently finalized arrangements for a permanent
meeting space for Occupy Harlem GA at Mt. Calvary United Methodist
Church in Central Harlem.

FILM & DISCUSSION on the Life of

AMILCAR CABRAL

The New York Chapter of the National Association of Kawaida Organizations (NAKO) presents its monthly community education forum. This month will feature a film and discussion centered around the African theorist and leader "Amilcar Cabral" from Batafa, Guinea. Cabral was assassinated January 20, 1973 by forces of Western imperialism.

Amilcar Cabral, one of the founders and leader of the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde), is revered in the historical memory of many who study the pathfinders of liberation struggles. While colonialists were beginning to negotiate dismantling their visible and oppressive holds on different African nations, Portugal was trying to tighten its hold on Guinea-Bissau. Cabral along with his supporters organized themselves to develop their political thinking and actions, as well as what Cabral called the "re-Africanization" of their minds.

Some of the quotes that emerged from the "Black Liberation Struggle" are from his theoretical observations, such as, "....always bear in mind that people are not fighting for ideas, for the things in anyone's head. They are fighting to win material benefits, to live better and in peace, to see their lives go forward, to guarantee the future for their children."

"We must practice revolutionary democracy in every aspect of our Party life. Every responsible member must have the courage of his responsibilities, exacting from others a proper respect for his work and properly respecting the work of others. Hide nothing from the masses of our people. Tell no lies. Expose lies whenever they are told. Mask no difficulties, mistakes, failures. Claim no easy victories...."

This program will take place at The Afrikan Poetry Theatre (APT), Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 3pm to 5pm. APT is located at 176-03 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica, Queens, New York 11432.

Admission is free, suggested minimum donation requested is $5.00 (but no one will be turned away).

BIO: Grammy-winning sensation Chrisette Michele has ascended to R&B royalty in a remarkably brief period of time. Signed to the Island Def Jam Music group in 2006, she has since produced three groundbreaking albums, all of which show off in grand style her brilliant voice, which she uses to seamlessly weave soul and pop into a truly enchanting blend. She garnered a Grammy Award in 2009, and hasn't looked back, releasing her latest album in 2010 and making her Blue Note debut in 2011.

Michele has been surrounded by music since she was a small child. This 29-year-old singer, songwriter, and composer has been blessed with an old soul and a deep appreciation for the harmonic and stylistic foundations of her music, which fuses pop, soul, and R&B together with a touch of jazz. She had even finished an album's worth of material before even trying to get signed. "I've been creating songs since I was 12, so I knew I needed the right musical blend in order to stand out from the many other performers trying to get a deal."

Though already a fan of gospel and classical, it wasn't until Michele was seventeen that she also developed a passion for jazz. "When I was still in high school a teacher introduced me to jazz singer Astrud Gilberto, and afterwards my life was all about jazz," she remembers. Majoring in music at Five Towns College in Long Island, she credits the nurturing sway of her teachers for where she is today. "My professors taught me how to a professional and to be serious about my music," she says. "They taught me how to put the music that I dream about at night on paper in the morning."

Those dreams Michele put to paper are now in the ears of countless fans. After India.Arie and Kem enlisted her as an opening act upon hearing her sing at the Village Underground, she was soon signed to the Def Jam label and released her critically lauded debut I Am in 2007. The disc fetched Michele her first Grammy Award for the song "Be Okay." 2008 found her collaborating with The Roots and embarking on a nationwide headlining tour with fellow soul singer Raheem DeVaughn. She enjoyed the critical success of her sophomore album Epiphany in 2009. The disc debuted at No. 1 on the Soundscan and Billbord charts, selling 83,000 copies in its first week.

Let Freedom Reign, Michele's latest effort, dropped in 2010. The album is charged throughout, a blissful marriage of fiery spirit and artful musicality. In an age of disposable tracks and thoughtless compositions, this album is the poignant counterpoint. "This moment I'm in the midst of is about doing whatever it is to bring freedom into your life, to make freedom your reality," muses Michele on her latest project. "Let Freedom Reign is a mandate to the people who are listening, a challenge ... to create freedom and truth in their lives."

Ms. Michele recently headlined The Blue Note Jazz Festival at Town Hall with the legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Best Buy Theatre in New York City. Chrisette Michele's new single, will be released in early spring, with CD to follow.

History of WATCH NIGHT:There are two essential reasons for the importance of New Year's Eve services in African American communities, congregations, etc. Many of the Watch Night Services in Black communities that we celebrate today can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as "Freedom's Eve." On that night, Americans of African descent came together in churches, gathering places and private homes throughout the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had become law. Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and according to Lincoln's promise, all slaves in the Confederate States were legally free. People remained in churches and other gathering places, eagerly awaiting word that Emancipation had been declared. When the actual news of freedom was received later that day, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God.

But even before 1962 and the possibility of a Presidential Emancipation, African people had gathered on New Year's Eve on plantations across the South. That is because many owners of enslaved Africans tallied up their business accounts on the first day of each new year. Human property was sold along with land and furnishings to satisfy debts. Families and friends were separated. Often they never saw each other again in this earthly world. Thus coming together on December 31 might be the last time for enslaved and free Africans to be together with loved ones.

So, Black folks in North America have gathered annually on New Year's Eve since the earliest days, praising God for bringing us safely through another year and praying for the future. Certainly, those traditional gatherings were made even more poignant by the events of 1863 which brought freedom to the slaves and the Year of Jubilee. Many generations have passed since and most of us were never taught the African American history of Watch Night. Yet our traditions and our faith still bring us together at the end of every year to celebrate once again "how we got over." and the continued fight for "REAL" Freedom.

He was also co-founder of the Broadwater Farm Defence Campaign in 1985 and recently stepped down from the community panel monitoring the investigation into the death of Mark Duggan, who was killed by police in August. Superintendent Leroy Logan MBE has been with the Metropolitan Police Service for over 28 years. He is currently Olympic Policing Co-ordination Team and is a former Deputy Borough Commander of Hackney in London. Supt. Logan is also a founder Member and Past Chair of both the National and London Black Police Associations and is currently on the Executive of the London association. In 2007 he founded Reallity, a social enterprise that works towards building capacity and capability in young people through faith based mentoring, working in partnership with likemended statutory / non-stautory organisations and individuals. Afrika Speaks with Alkebu-Lan this week continues with an examination of racism and corruption with the UK police force. Listeners will recall that part one dealt extensively with the case of the wrongly imprisoned Cardiff 3 and the recent collapse of the £30m trial of 8 former South Wales police officers who undertook the original investigation and were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The trial was halted, when it emerged that some key evidence was either “missing” or destroyed. This event is only the latest episode of questionable practice that seems to run through the UK police service. In fact, according to a 14/02/10 Guardian article by Sandra Laville “the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA)is assessing the scale of corruption within the British police after concerns were raised by senior internal investigators.”

If the SOCA assessment is ongoing it will presumably include the suspension in Mosiah (Aug) of Cleveland Police's chief constable Sean Price and his deputy Derek Bonnard as a result of their arrest pending an investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption in the service. The same investigation also prompted the resignation of the Chairman of the Cleveland Police Authority, Cllr Dave McLuckie.

To illustrate the fact that that corruption is not limited to the provinces, the biggest recent casualties were the UK’s top policeman, Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson and Assistant Commissioner John Yates who both resigned in July in the wake of the ongoing press/phone hacking scandal and the questionable relationship they had with senior officers the News International group. In spite of Stephenson’s declaration that: “I and the people who know me know that my integrity is completely intact.” He was unable to whether the storm caused by his association with Neil Wallis, former deputy editor of the now defunct News of the World (NOTW), later hired as a PR consultant for the MPS, who was arrested as part of the new investigation into phone hacking. For his part, Yates became increasingly under fire for overseeing a woefully inadequate 2009 review into the original 2006 phone hacking investigation in which he suggested that no further action be taken as well as his failure to take adequate action against officers who were known to have illegally accepted bribes. One victim of the NOTW hacking, former Army intelligence officer Ian Hurst was damning of the MPS: “Fundamentally, what lays behind this whole cesspit - not since 2006, it predates it by many years before that - we're dealing with institutionalised corruption. It's endemic within the Metropolitan police and that has to be dealt with."

A few weeks after Stephenson’s resignation Bro. Mark Duggan was shot and killed by police marksmen. Not untypically in cases of Afrikans dying at the hands of the police, a campaign of misinformation ensued (aided and abetted by a willing media and assisted in the early stages by the Independent Police Complaints Authority - IPCC) that characterised Duggan as a notorious gangster who engaged the police in a gun battle. The reality is that Duggan had no previous convictions, the only shots fired were police shots and no forensic evidence has been that he was carrying a gun.

The IPCC facilitated a community panel to monitor the investigation into the killing but has this been rocked by the recent resignations of two of the three panel members - Stafford Scott, organiser of the Tottenham Defence Campaign, and John Noblemunn, chairman of Haringey Black Independent Advisory Group. Scott and Noblemunn quit over their assertion that the taxi that Bro. Duggan was travelling in before he was shot was removed from the scene and returned before investigators arrived. But IPCC chairman Len Jackson rejected these claims as “inaccurate, misleading and more importantly, irresponsible” and risk “undermining the integrity of public confidence” into the investigation.

However , “Integrity” and “confidence” may not be notions the Emmanuels, still grieving from the March death family member David (aka Smiley Culture), would align to the IPCC in the wake of their investigation into his death. The IPCC regarded the four officers at the scene when the 1980s music star allegedly stabbed himself through the heart during a police raid, as witnesses rather than suspects and thus were never formally interviewed. Indeed, according to IPCC commissioner Mike Franklin, the investigation “found no evidence that a criminal offence may have been committed. The investigation [also] found there were no individual failings which, for the purposes of the [Police (Conduct) Regulations 2008], amounted to misconduct,” even though the singer was handcuffed after the stabbing took place. Merlin Emmanuel, the reggae star’s nephew, said his family has reacted to the IPCC findings with "anger, resentment and resilience" and accused the body of treating them with "contempt." The family have also only been granted access to a summary the IPCC report, rather then the full report, on the instruction of the coroner.

Although Stephen Lawrence was murdered at the hands of a racist gang of young thugs, rather than MPS, there is a widespread perception that his killers are still at large because of its “institutional racism.” The current murder trial of two the mob, Gary Dobson, and David Norris is largely due to the emergence of new DNA evidence linking them to Stephen Lawrence. But the possibility of a conviction being scuppered by the police again reared its head in late November. Police forensic scientist Yvonne Turner admitted in court that she inadvertently labelled the clothing with the case number of an unrelated robbery, meaning some case records had been difficult to find for up to two years and stated: "I wasn't concentrating and I wasn't focused at the stage when I wrote the case number in." She also confessed that the errors in her notes were "very irregular." This could be a costly admission given that the defence case is based on claims of contaminated evidence.

Even away from death and imprisonment, the Afrikan community’s encounter with the police has historically been characterised by racism - from Notting Hill in 1958 (or even 1976), Brixton 1981 to the present. Yet it wasn’t until the publication of the McPherson Report of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry in 1999 that the host community had to confront the fact that the police were “institutionally racist.” It was a situation that caused the MPS to claim that fear of being called racist subsequently hindered them from doing their job effectively. However, the facts have never borne this out as the stop and search rates of Afrikans, for example, have continued to increase even as the proportion of these stops leading to arrests has declined.

It could be argued that those best placed to assess the progress of the MPS in the area of race relations are those on the inside. The Metropolitan Black Police Association is one such grouping and even they have had their challenges over the years that have caused them in the past to boycott MPS “ethnic minority” recruitment drives and which led the then Chair, Alfred John, to proclaim in February last year the force was still racist, “Without a doubt. There is no two ways about that.” Since then a report commissioned by the Mayor of London into racism in the force has been published including 10 recommendations which, it asserts if implemented, if accepted and acted upon, “all officers and staff will benefit and that the MPS itself will become stronger and more effective.” It is not clear the extent to which any of the recommendations have been accepted or implemented and if they were what impact it would have on the community.

So tonight we ask the question again:

Is the British Police Force

Corrupt and Racist? Part 2

Is Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson’s integrity “completely intact”?
Why were police officers who illegally took bribes not severely dealt with?
Or is corruption “endemic” within the MPS?
Were Stafford Scott and John Noblemunn right to quit the community monitoring panel?
Or were their actions “irresponsible”?
Have their resignations “undermined the integrity of public confidence” into the investigation?
What was the level of public confidence in the IPCC before the investigation?
Was the IPCC investigation into the death of Smiley Culture satisfactory?
Why were the police considered witnesses rather than suspects?
Why have the family been denied access to the full IPCC report?
Will police practice again scupper the chance of Stephen Lawrence’s murderers being convicted?
What do the police have to do to be punished for bad practice?
Have any of the recommendations of the Mayor’s review into racism in the MPS being accepted or implemented?
If not, why not?
If so, what impact as it had?

If you don’t already know we are ecstatic to announce the coming of our
Natural Hair Expo, here in Harlem. Stephanie and Kayce are here to bring a
service to our natural sisters & brothers here in Harlem. As new Naturals we ran
into many obstacles when it came to knowing how to treat our hair. The purpose
of this event is to talk about the beauty of natural hair and to educate people as to
how to care for it is our goal. Though workshops and vendors we believe that we
can provide a valuable service to our community members.

Of all places, Harlem needs to have an event of this nature. Being populated
with so many different cultures and different textures of hair, some people are not
familiar with how to care for there natural hair textures. From Locks, twist, braids,
Afros, Curls etc. We want you all; so we are reaching out to you, the educator, and
the entrepreneur to help our vision come true. We want you to come out and show
case to our Harlem Naturals what options they have when it comes to their hair.

last 9 years about 350 engaging scholars, students, activists, writers,
community and cultural workers, primarily concerned peoples of the global
south, resident in the imperial north, have found it informative,

Our speakers will address the terrifying racist murderous assault and
plunder being practiced by the capitalist supremacist aggressive West and
their allies against Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia and the rest of Africa,
as well as the state deployment of terror in Colombia. Who are the global
terrorists? Who are the democracy-toting mass murderers? Who stands to
gain? And at what loss? What are the lies being circulated as truth?

This will be a full intense involving day with much more to learn than the
deceptions the mainstream capitalist press continues to present to the
world as truth.

A Call for a National Dialog on Black Left Participation in the OWS Movement

Over the last two years, the Black left unity network (BLUN) has engaged in a process that focused on reaching out to Black worker activists in the labor movement, and other core social movements that organize and mobilize the Black working class. We have looked for opportunities such as building support for the Hurricane Katrina survivors and organizing and promoting a Reconstruction movement as a strategic flank of the U.S. anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist struggle, using Survivor Assemblies as popular democratic forums; promoting a Thank You Cuba campaign to challenge attempts to isolate Cuba and socialism as a racist regime; and participating in the Human Rights movement to help ground it in mass bases of resistance to help shape and influence its demands and anti-imperialist political character.

While there is much more needed in developing the BLUN as a unity process; a major aspect of the process must be that of forging Black left unity within the context of trying to unify and give a working class and internationalist perspective based in concrete demands to the struggles and upsurges that originate from or may have an impact on the Black masses. Therefore, with the emergence of the OWS as an national phenomenon with developing organizational expressions in various cities across the country, members of BLUN have taken the position that it is important to develop a process for addressing the questions that have quickly surfaced related to the political character of this movement and the role and participation of Black, Latino and Native forces.

BLUN along with the Labor working group of US Human Rights Network, will host a call on Thursday, October 20, at 3pm EST. Some of the questions that will be discussed include:

1.      While our communities are weakly organized, disconnected from the occupation motion, how might the occupy wall street be used to organize our communities for fundamental social change in the interests of the Black masses? Or can it?

2.      How can the Black left help to build alliances between the Black and Latino working classes in particular and with workers of color in general to begin forging Black and Brown working class unity as key to driving a popular agenda and mandate for radical social transformation in this period?
3.      How can Black left forces direct this anti-capitalist sentiment and energy of the OWS to increase the existing fight backs in the labor movement and the Black communities?

4.      Since labor is an important social force in the capitalist system, how can Black workers influence and help to mobilize the character and content of labors involvement in the OWS?

5.      How can the Black left become a force in helping to promote U.S. accountability to the UN Human Rights Conventions as a transitional program toward internationalizing the OWS movement?
