Check Out the New Labs!

Blackbaud Labs has been ported to run entirely on the soon-to-be-released Blackbaud NetCommunity v5.5. Check out the details of how we'll all benefit from this move by visiting the new http://labs.blackbaud.com. As a result of the upgrade this RSS feed has reached its end of life and has been replaced with multiple new feeds that will help us to better organize the growing amount of information coming out of the lab. This will be the last post to this feed. So please check out the new site, subscribe to the new feeds, and keep an eye out for lots of upcoming new notes from the Lab!

A guest appearance on Labs from Michael Andrews, Distinguished Engineer at Blackbaud. Mike has posted a great white paper covering mobile device support in NetCommunity. In addition, he has posted the full source to a custom part you can use today to starting "going mobile" as Pete Townshend would say...

Infinity-powered applications will soon get an integrated, pervasive search experience. In this really short (7 minute) screen cast we'll do a high level overview and some quick demos. Kudos to Ben Rice and Paul Gibson, the architects behind this stuff. All I contributed was crazy ideas :) We're super excited about the potentially far reaching implications of this platform feature.

Blackbaud VMLab - a free, open source release

Blackbaud Labs announces the immediate FREE open source release of our powerful, internally developed, Virtualization Lab technology tool set (VMLab). Full source code is provided "as is" with no specific support from Blackbaud under the Mozilla Public License 1.1. The VMLab project exists to provide an easy to use tool for managing a virtual lab. The primary design goals were ease of use, low maintenance, and scalability. You can find out more about VMLab at http://labs.blackbaud.com

Today we'll do a short overview of the Infinity API stack and strategy. Also a peek into the labs at the "Cloud Catalog." I'm also trying a new Silverlight-based streaming format, that while not as nice quality, should stream a lot more smoothly.

As promised in the NetCommunity Open API screen cast, we have posted a number of samples that illustrate how to use the APIs in the NetCommunity arsenal. From "Hello World" to a full blown transaction round trip, this stuff should serve as a good starting point for those looking to dig in. Also, to you API veterans out there, we encourage you to post your own samples and contribute on the Wiki.

In this screen cast we'll take a quick look at the NetCommunity Open API. Available since the original release of NetCommunity, this robust, mature API is being employed
in production environments by many NetCommunity customers. In this screen cast we'll give a high level introduction to the API and since it's Blackbaud Labs, we'll attach the debugger and step through some code baby! Lastly, by popular demand we'll reveal road map information on our plans for the NetCommunity API moving forward.

An important aspect of the Infinity platform strategy is improved reach. We want to engage as many users as possible, and when applicable, via their medium of choice. What better way to demo reach than on an iPhone?

Blackbaud 2.0 - Infinity-powered mashups

From the early days of architecting the Infinity platform we have focused on embracing Web 2.0 technologies and standards. EVERY Infinity API is a web service and RSS support is plumbed into even the lowest levels of the platform. With all this Web 2.0 centricity comes the big payoff: mashups. In this short 20 minute screen cast, I'll walk through building multiple mashups, starting in Blackbaud Enterprise CRM and journeying into Microsoft PopFly and Yahoo! Pipes. I guess the Internet really is just a series of tubes! Using these powerful, and highly visual, mashup tools, we'll build some interesting little apps. We'll even do something in Facebook, since no Web 2.0 demo in 2007 is complete without featuring Facebook. Bonus points if you can count how many times I used the word "adorn"...(one of my favorites!)

If you'd like to get a chance to participate in usability studies, and interact directly with our design team, the playground is where to get started.
