I started knitting these yoga socks [on the left] a year ago, but didn’t finish, never quite satisfied with how they were turning out. Returning to them this winter, I ripped out the whole project and started on these leg warmers [on the right] instead. I love them, and have absolutely never been happier ripping out, tearing up, or deleting a project. Sometimes, you just have to start over.

Happy belated Thanksgiving! Mine was spent baking my grandma’s always anticipated apple pies, and re-watching one of my favorite shows, Twin Peaks. It’s been five years since I first watched the show, and it’s such a different experience watching it now. Then, I was returning from living abroad, picking out my first apartment, and just getting to know the amazing man who would become my husband.

Which pie top is your favorite?

Grandma Jellison’s Apple Pie
This makes one 9-inch pie.

crust of your choosing [I use smitten kitchen’s recipe]
6 cups apples [peeled, cored, quartered, and sliced as thin as you can]
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 TBS butter
tiny bit of milk

In a bowl, mix the sliced apples with sugar and cinnamon. Roll out the dough and line your pie plate. Fill with apple mixture. Cut butter into pieces and dot them on top of the apples. Cover with top crust. Cut slits in top crust, or cut fun designs. Brush milk over top, and sprinkle with a little cinnamon and sugar. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, and then turn the temperature down to 350 degrees and bake for 45-50 minutes. Cool on a rack, or on top of two coffee mugs that are the same height.

I’m super happy with the results of this week’s election in the US. There is a record number of women and minorities in Congress, a handful of states approved marriage equality to same-sex couples, and marijuana was decriminalized in both Washington and Colorado, something I really didn’t expect to see so soon! So I’m celebrating with pie.

Some honey recipes and mini-playlist to share. I’ve been using lots of honey lately, making things like honey & mint simple syrup and the honey caramel apples shown above. Honey & mint simple syrup recipe after the jump!

honey + mint simple syrup
recipe from Foodie Crush

1/2 cup raw honey
1/2 cup water
1-2 stems of mint

Bring honey and water to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and add the mint. Simmer for 15 minutes, and cool.

John & I went on an anniversary trip this year, where we spent several days lounging in the shade of Spanish moss and the warmth of the sand, walking, biking, and perusing thrift shops and fabric stores. It couldn’t have been more relaxing.

how to: suitcase revamp

I didn’t get a before picture of this suitcase, and the fun the previous child owner had with it. Thankfully the drawings and writing were left to the front and back, not the sides, making it pretty easy to recover. Another unplanned savior was that this suitcase has a plastic lip around the edges where I was able to hide the edge of the wallpaper.

Supplies: suitcase, wallpaper/magazines/etc., liquid adhesive, paintbrush, scissors

Steps:

1. Cut wallpaper to the shape and size of the side of the suitcase you’re covering.

2. Slide wallpaper under the plastic lip all the way around to ensure a snug fit and no trimming will be necessary.

3. Remove wallpaper and paint the liquid adhesive, covering the entire area where the wallpaper will go.

4. Starting with one corner, slide the wallpaper under the plastic lip and smooth the wallpaper down over the side of the suitcase. Rub any bumps out as the appear.

5. Let the glue dry, and go on a trip!
