Redefining African-American Identity

Date: Sunday April 22, 2012 Objective: The objective of this digital panel is to deconstruct the meaning of the identity labels Black, African and African-American by examining the complexities within each identification marker, their underlying culture and the history surrounding each. We will then examine how identity relates to political and economic empowerment and if the economic future of the descendents of enslaved Africans is linked to the development of strong identity ties with itself. Panelists: Professor Baruti Katembo: a mathematician, is the author of the 2001 book Elephants in a Bamboo Cage and several other publications about optimizing resource use, potential, and cultural leverage in Pan-African communities. His new book, released in March 2012, is entitled Scattered Assets: How African-Americans and Other Resources Can Shape 21st Century Pan-African Empowerment. Formerly, he served as a mathematics faculty member at Edward Waters College and also directed the College's faculty think-tank, the Ujuzi Group. Peronearl "Winston" Robert Jackson was born the second child of Robert Jackson III (Gloria) and Verdon Kaleo Ashlly-Simpkins on Saturday, January 30, 1965. He passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida of natural causes after an extensive illness. However, he continued to work and show love and support to his family and friends. Peronearl loved soul music, the company of good people and a nice sunny day at the beach. He attended Mayport Junior High and graduated from Fletcher Senior High School. His college education was pursued at Florida State College at Jacksonville as a computer science major. He left FSCJ and was recently accepted into Edward Waters College. He had a life-long love for learning. Winston had one son he loved dearly, named Jason Jackson and a grandchild he doted over named Kaleb Jackson. He is survived by siblings: Robert Jackson IV, Leroy R. Jackson (Kim), Paul R. Jackson, Eric R. Jackson (Sevin), Opio Lumumba Sokoni (aka Shannon R. Jackson) (Kafi), Ernest R. Jackson (Tangela), Diane R. Jackson, Mary R. Jackson, Grace A. Jackson, Lamar Jackson, Barbara Jackson-Harrel. He also had two great nieces and a host of caring cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, friends and admirers.
