<title>Civil Rights Speech: President Clinton at an Annual Convocation in Memphis, Tennessee (1993)</title>
<description>thefilmarchive.org November 13, 1993 The South witnessed two major events in the lives of 20th century African Americans: the Great Migration and the American Civil Rights Movement. The Great Migration began during World War I, hitting its high point during World War II. During this migration, blacks left the South to find work in Northern factories and other sectors of the economy. The migration also empowered the growing Civil Rights Movement. While the movement existed in all parts of the United States, its focus was against disfranchisement and the Jim Crow laws in the South. Most of the major events in the movement occurred in the South, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Mississippi Freedom Summer, the March on Selma, Alabama, and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.. In addition, some of the most important writings to come out of the movement were written in the South, such as King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail". Most of the civil rights landmarks can be found around the South. The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site in Atlanta includes a museum that chronicles the American Civil Rights Movement as well as Martin Luther King, Jr.'s boyhood home on Auburn Avenue. Additionally, Ebenezer Baptist Church is located in the Sweet Auburn district as is the King Center, location of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King's gravesites. As a result of the Civil Rights Movement, Jim Crow laws across the South were dropped. A second migration appears to ...

<title>Advancing Global Economic Development with Ambassador Andrew Young</title>
<description>Ambassador Young focuses on the future of doing business domestically and on a global scale, with particular emphasis on opportunities in previously overlooked markets. A Continuing Legacy: Reflecting on his experiences during the civil rights movement, Andrew Young inspires and challenges audiences to continue to push toward peace and justice throughout the world. Bio: United States Congressman, 1973-1977 US Ambassador to the United Nations, 1977-1979 Mayor of Atlanta, 1982-1990 Co-Founding Principal and Chairman, GoodWorks International Andrew Young has always viewed his career through the lens of his first career - that of ordained minister. His work for civil and human rights, his many years in public office as Congressman, United Nations Ambassador and Mayor, his leadership of the Atlanta Olympic Games, his advocacy of public purpose capitalism through GoodWorks International, and the establishment of the Andrew J. Young Foundation are all a response to his call to serve. Ambassador Young brings a unique perspective formed by his wealth of experience in national and global leadership to his focus on the challenges of this era. He confronted segregation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and galvanized a movement that transformed a nation through non-violence. Young was a key strategist and negotiator during the Civil Rights Campaigns in Birmingham and Selma that resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He was elected to ...

      <title>Civil Rights Remembered</title>
<description>Upwards of 30 individuals showed up Wednesday afternoon to march in "Civil Rights Remembered," the brainchild of Wesley Staedt, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Staedt, along with a group of students, went on a tour of historic civil rights sites last spring. Staedt and Courtney Blevins, a junior at UW-Whitewater, felt a march to remember civil rights was needed locally. The march occurred on the 47th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," a peaceful march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., that turned violent when law enforcement used brutal force to stop the march. Pictured above left, the group marched two by two up Main Street in Whitewater.

      <title>Worcester Voices of Civil Rights</title>
<description>Two Worcester men — one black, one white — were eyewitnesses to the nation's turbulent and definitive civil rights movement in the 1960s. Lifelong civil rights activist Esau Vance, 64, who has lived in Worcester since 1974, grew up in Mississippi; one of seven children born to sharecroppers in Indianola. For a dozen years, Mr. Vance worked tirelessly in the South for equal rights for blacks and marched from Sunflower to Indianola to meet the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at a voting rights rally in 1964. Worcester resident and Bowditch &amp; Dewey lawyer Erwin H. "Dusty" Miller, 72, was 25 when he participated in the Selma-to-Montgomery, Ala., voting rights march on March 25, 1965. A third-year law school student at Yale University, Mr. Miller was working on his thesis about the civil rights act. "Participating in the march made it come alive for me," Mr. Miller said of the civil rights movement. "It wasn't just dry academic stuff." <title>Malcolm X Supports Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.</title>
<description>Malcolm X speaks in support of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the voter-registration campaign at Selma, Ala., Feb. 4, 1965 (begins at 00:44). The footage is from NBC News and the report is dated Feb. 13, 1965, by the video supplier. Malcolm X, president of the black nationalist and Sunni Islamic Muslim Mosque, Inc. (MMI) and chairman of the secular pan-Africanist Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), spoke at a news conference in the nursery of the venerable Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church. The chapel was used for mass rallies of Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the militant Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which were working together in an uneasy alliance to organize demonstrations against Alabama's elaborate literacy tests and other discriminatory laws designed to keep African Americans from registering to vote. TAILSPIN The report begins with the conclusion of a halting, impromptu speech by Coretta Scott King, Dr. King's wife, who nervous SCLC officials asked to speak after Malcolm X unexpectedly arrived (00:36) at the invitation of SNCC members Fay Bellamy and Silas Norman, the group's Selma project director, who heard him talk at Tuskegee University the nite before. At the time, Dr. King was in jail for leading a demonstration four days earlier. SNCC's invitation for Malcolm X to address a rally of some 300 "black" students involved in the voter-registration campaign "sent SCLC officials ...

<title>Museum Matters: USC International Museum Institute and J. Paul Getty Museum Event</title>
<description>Education is at the heart of a museum's mission. Museums want to tell you things -- through object labels, audio tours, videos, brochures, websites and public programs. But is this really education? Not according to David Wilson, director of the Museum of Jurassic Technology (MJT). In a rousing discussion moderated by USC International Museum Institute director Selma Holo, David Wilson and artist Fred Wilson, who unearths and juxtaposes objects from museums' deep storage to uncover hidden stories, debated the place of audience, community and education in museums.
