SOUTH HOLLYWOOD FILM FESTIVAL SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2102 11A - 9P 600 BLOCK OF TEXAS STREET, DOWNTOWN, SHREVEPORT, LA FREE PANELS AND FILM SCREENINGS CALL (888) 295-1226 FOR TICKET INFO. www.South HollywoodFilmFestival.com The South Hollywood Film Festival (SHFF) will take place Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 26, 2012, in Shreveport, Louisiana, 600 block of Texas Street downtown. The festival begins at Southern University-Shreveport at 11am with workshop/panels, followed by independent film screenings at 1pm. The festivities continue across the street at 5pm with the annual All-White Mixer at 4J's Java & More (all-white attire preferred). SHFF is a multi-cultural event, taking place each Memorial Day weekend in Shreveport. The SHFF will also visit other robust film industry markets such as New Orleans and Atlanta. The SHFF is the region's premiere experience for actors, filmmakers, crew and businesses seeking to cultivate a new vibrant, inner-reliant industry network. Although the festival's primary targets are filmmakers, businesses and talent with Southern US roots, the festival is open to ANYONE interested in progressing in the film industry. All ethnic groups, women and youth are encouraged to participate. It is positioned as a tool for the underdogs -- great talent (many undiscovered) with great ideas, but just don't know where and how to get started. The workshops and screenings are free to the public and open to all ages. Special invited panel guests* include ...

Alvin Batiste : Picou

In "Picou", Alvin Batiste pays tribute to Alphonse Floristan Picou (October 19, 1878 -- February 4, 1961), an important early jazz clarinetist of New Orleans. Picou's funeral procession in 1961 was one of the largest New Orleans had seen, with several brass bands and many additional musicians playing to give Alphonse Picou a send off. Many commentators said it marked the end of an era, as Picou was the last prominent, still-working musician from the very birth of jazz. A few photographs from the funeral are included in the accompanying video. Alvin Batiste (November 7, 1932 -- May 6, 2007) was a very forward-thinking jazz clarinetist born in New Orleans, Louisiana. After stints away from his birthplace - with Ornette Coleman, Ray Charles, Cannonball Adderley - Batiste returned home, where he taught at his own jazz institute at Southern University in Baton Rouge. "Picou" comes from a 1988 recording called "Bayou Magic", featuring Batiste on clarinet, Emile Vinette on piano, Chris Severen on bass and Herman Jackson on drums.

STEM Sells Workshop - Lee County

Lee County middle school students received instruction and participated in hands-on activities at the second regional "STEM SELLS" workshop presented by The Center for Rural Development and Forward in the Fifth. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The workshop, one of four planned this summer across Southern and Eastern Kentucky, is designed to encourage rising sixth- and seventh-grade students to consider future careers in STEM disciplines. Students explored their knowledge in the STEM areas, completing hands-on experiments in chemistry, physics and biology taught by University of Kentucky faculty members Drs. Carol Pickett, Eddie Demoll, Sally Shafer, and Kwok-wai Ng. Conducting sessions both inside and outside allowed students to explore STEM in a variety of settings. Clinton County teachers Erin Casada and Tim Duvall co-facilitated the sessions. The workshop was presented in collaboration with the University of Kentucky's Appalachian Mathematics and Science Partnership.
