It is neglected because my grannies are so busy: one is working with her personal blog and the other is working in odesk. But no matter what, I’m still going to share what happened on March 9, a very special day for my dad.

My dad Pino turned four years old. Way ahead the event my grannies were talking about what to prepare while I’m just listening and waiting if the plan will materialize because I like experiencing the result than making plans.

“Happy birthday to me! But where’s the FOOD.”

Everyone was in a good mood early in the morning. They greeted and sing for my dad and urged us to do the same. After my human family had lunched, they were busy cooking, walking back and forth, and cleaning—I just presumed that what they are doing have something to do with the celebration—and most importantly the food.

I was excited that I stood on the chair all the time following their every move. I was getting more thrilled when they brought our dog bowl to the kitchen which means two things—for cleaning or for serving food. Then my bowl was dropped—inside is long, spaghetti covered with sauce full of Lycopene. Happy b-day daddy! Yummy, the spaghetti is firm and the sweetness and sourness of the sauce blends well. I cleaned (licked) my bowl so as not to waste anything and to keep it clean.

<img 0"="" alt="askal sniffing a spaghetti border=" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_ewnNjI0ehCAqNQLRyQK1itOxL_F22B0x6pf5UmIOlt-YOQboDfs_o0JoygFzezrJNkwJ8DUObTn9DyfbPj9576xBjFYoaGx-z5F-UeKbypiRTDwQy4g862CVFBf0TtIInzLtsZJdNtk/s1600/Aspin_and_spaghetti.jpg" />

”Tada! Spaghetti for the birthday celebrant.
(IC, on the background, also had the al dente treat, though she doesn’t have a present for Pino.)”

Afterwards, I thought we’re done with the celebration. My grannies left because they went to church for Ash Wednesday. They have smear of ash on their forehead when they went home and have bought a cold treat for us—ice cream. We just had the coffee flavor, no chocolate—even in birthdays, not even dad. We gloat together; coffee is yummy anyway.

”Yum, I wish ... yum … for more birthdays to come and … yum … yum … spaghetti.”

In behalf of my Aspin family, I like to thank my earthling family for a yummy treat and that they didn’t forget my dad’s special day. And to our dad without you, Kermit, Buchie, and I wouldn’t be here enjoying the spaghetti and ice cream.

Can’t wait for your next b-day! And you’re invited in my coming first b-day this May.

I'm Now a Lady!

I’m still an Aspin. What the title means is, after nine months and ten days, I am now “in hit.” At first I left little drops of blood on the floor; these evidences lead to the discovery of my granny—the baby is now a lady. And it’s not good news!

By now, the “alert mode” in the house is activated. At all costs, my human owners wouldn’t let any male pooch comes near me because there’s a strictly-imposed rule in our house after Buchie and I were born: no more puppies! They wouldn’t leave me alone outside; my great grandparents (my owners’ parents) are their helping to guard the “blossoming lady!”

They are grateful for one thing though, Buchie, my sister, is not yet in hit, so all eyes are on me. What if all treats are for me? How I wish from the bottom of my coat!

True Value Hardware, Another Dog Supply Depot

A few weeks ago, my sister and I had a trip in True Value, a hardware store, at Trinoma Mall. We didn’t go there for any home-improvement project. I read on the net that like Ace Hardware, True Value is somewhat a pet store for having an array of selections of dog, cat, fish, and bird supplies which are affordable and imported.

If you’re looking for its location in Trinoma Mall, you can ask the concierge. The easiest way to find it is when you’re in the center of the activity ground where events are held; look for Red Ribbon. Beside it is a path leading to more shops, one of which is True Value located at the left side.
The hardware store isn’t that huge compare to Ace Hardware found in SM Annex, North Edsa but on the contrary the former has lower price for dog supplies (I don’t know about the rest because I only looked at the prices of canine items.) My sister bought only important things.

Stainless Steel Dog Bowl

Stainless dog bowl at True Value; inset photo at Ace Hardware.

True Value has many stainless dog bowls you can choose from. We picked the one with embossed bone and paw design for Chuchie. Surprisingly it’s cheaper than Pino’s bowl bought at Ace Hardware though they have the same size and rubber at the bottom. Larger and colored (e.g. red, green) bowls are also available. I recommend stainless steel dog bowl because it is durable and easy to clean. And even after prolong use, yellow stains do not build up.

Jolly Nylon Dog Collar

Purple and pink collar for Kermit!

I don’t know how Kermit did it, but she succeeded in ruining her collar bought in a pet shop near a local market. We choose a violet with pink dog collar made of nylon because of its durability. (Chuckie’s collar was handed down to Chuchie.) It has a bell that keeps on ringing when Kermit moves—I know if she’s awake even when I’m upstairs.

Bonnie’s Choice Dog Chews

It is similar to Muffy found at SM Supermarket. Other than the label showing the name, it doesn’t have any more information unlike Goodies Munchy Treat. Nonetheless, the woof family loves it very much.

Skippy Dog Food

Skippy is the latest addition to the Aspin family’s choices. Its flavors are beef and chicken with beef. The meat is softer than Pet One Dog Food Adult Beef Stew Choice Cuts but both have somewhat the same price.

Sulfodene Ear Cleaner for Dogs and Cats

Among the items my sister purchased at True Value, Suldofene is the most expensive—approximately Php 350.00, a price lower than buying online. This is the reason why from SM North we needed to walk a bit far to reach Trinoma. My sister is looking for an ear cleaner for a long time for Pino. When I mentioned about another hardware store in a mall, she convinced me to scour the mall and fortunately True Value didn’t let her down.

If you’re visiting this store for the first time you might want to stick to your list; otherwise you’ll be tempted to buy more than you plan—blame it to variety and affordability. Among the items, I examined more are the different sizes of dog beds which look quite the same in Amazon. I’ll definitely have to save for it.

What surprised me most is the tick remover for pet—too pricey for a small, simple grooming device. I also found plastic and mesh dog muzzle and shampoo that my sister is eyeing for. I can’t recall all the items; you just have to see it for yourself. Now, I and other pet owners have two hardware stores found in Manila to visit for the satisfaction of demanding pets.

Gone but Not Forgotten

Today, a day after Valentine’s Day is the 1st year death anniversary of Chuckie, the apple of the eye of our family. He left us three months before the birth of Chuchie and Buchie, the new members of our family that bring happiness as well.

Yet we still remember, from time to time, everything about Chuckie: his stubbornness, his tender hug, and his mischief.

No matter how many four-legged pals we have, he’ll never be forgotten like the Aspins that came and went long before him.

Haru, in his early age, succumb to sickness that is still a mystery to us. Our family has found new owners for him, and like us, they too were saddened by his too-soon demise.

Kring Kring

It’s funny to think, yet as a kid it didn’t matter to me if I sound like a telephone ringing every time I call our dog Kring Kring. We didn’t have a phone at that time, but if I would pick between them—I would rather have a barking telephone.

I think our family had five dogs that have gone to heaven already along with Chuckie. I tried to look for photos but only found Kring Kring.

Even without photos as a reminder, what matter is that they all have left an imprint full of PAWsitivity in our life.

For that we are truly blessed and grateful!

Enjoying my stay as a roommate.

My favorite activity—sleeping! But before having sweet dreams, I had few photos taken by my earthling grannies as a remembrance for my first sleepover in their room.

It’s nice lying on the wooden floor, old yet shiny and warm for my sensitive coat. I wonder what floor wax do they use and how often they have to scrub it? What matter is, I for a single day became their newly-bathe roommate. (What if I take a bath every day, will I be allowed for a woody sleep over?)

Water every day! I'll stick to occasional slumber party. Anyway, I don't want to be disturbed by my human owner typing and surfing in wee hours. Enough sleep is important for the proper development of my body.

And among the delectable choices the Adult Beef Stew Choice Cuts, a wet dog food, is their favorite.

I felt like singing “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Hakuna Matata.” Fortunately, he still barks like “arf, arf” and not “growls” like a lion in the savanna.

Chuchie’s Big Moment!

Today you’ll witness a rare event as Chuchie shows her prowess on the keyboard.

Ladies, gentlemen, and doggies let’s give a round of applause to the musically-inclined Aspin.

What a cutie!

Jonas (our deceased dog) gave birth almost four years ago to her second litter composed of four puppies, two females and two males. My mom gave us permission to keep a male puppy. Several weeks after I saw one who was growing beautifully: hes’s huggable, adorable, almost like a teddy bear everyone loves. I named him Teddy—yet a relative who lives next door adopted him.

With four puppies to choose from my sister picked a black puppy that she perceived to become furry later on. She has high hope while I have doubt. I thought the puppy is not the ideal one to adopt, an underdog I must say. Frustrated with her decision, I teased her about choosing a rodent and even encourage her to pick a less-looking-rodent puppy even if it’s a female.

But no matter what unpleasant remark or mocking the little one gets—she was determined to keep him at all costs. The lucky fellow found a friend, a saver, through my sister.

The Change of Heart

I admit, I immediately judged the poor puppy. To make up for the wrong deed, I came up with a name for him. Fairy tales are the best source in naming a dog: IC was almost named after a famous character, while the unnamed, cherished pup fetch a short-yet-suitable name. It’s so easy to guest. I’m telling no lie; otherwise, my nose will elongate, a funny punishment. Still clueless?

Pinocchio! I took only the first four letters: Pino that is also based in Pinoy because her mom, Jonas, is an Aspin (asong Pinoy or Filipino dog).

Fortunately, my sister treated him well in spite of not resembling a teddy bear. She gave everything he needs: Pino is well fed, received vaccinations. And when she’s going out, we are tasked to feed him on time, and sufficiently, though most of the time I gave more than enough, because he looks as though begging.

He eats different treats that my sister bought online. (I somewhat envy him because we haven’t bought anything online for ourselves; window shopping on the net is all we do.) Pino is pampered with love and attention of my sister. They are thick as thieves; inseparable beings. No wonder Pino loves my sister more than anyone in the house. There are times that he wouldn’t obey us, but if my sister gave a command he follows instantly. He’s like a son to her that everyone in the house refer to Pino as “your son” when we complain to my sister about Pino’s mischief.

Pino is the center of attention in our family. It’s the benefits of having one dog. But it didn’t take long—as many rivals came one after the other.

Fatherhood and Green-eyed Monster

Today, I no longer liken him to a rat. Pino has grown with a resemblance to Teddy, his brother. There color differs yet both have furry coat. Together with IC, He had fathered to eight puppies that I didn’t judge by their look anymore: furry, chubby, resembling a rat or a bear, all of them deserve love.

We like having them around and Pino is getting the hang of fatherhood. But there are times when we play with them and he would immediately come near as though he’s saying “What about me, have you forgotten me?” So a quick pat on the head, I supposed, tell him that we still love him. Jealousy becomes more evident when we have more dogs. They seem to vie for attention.

And Pino who used to be the only dog insists himself even more to her mom that when my sister is sitting, Pino would sit on her lap just like when he was a young, carefree puppy. Even if he’s too big and heavy my sister doesn’t complain—not for more than five minutes.

Many things have changed as he grows. Yet he still prefer to sleep in my mom’s room whenever he pleases. He still loves to eat, and he’s still the son—the apple of the eye of my sister.

The moral of the Pino’s mini-biography is not to judge a puppy by his look. Ask Pino. He surely wouldn’t lie unlike Pinocchio and say, “Look at me now. Big and furry and no longer an underdog.”

New Year With a Bang(s)

New Year, New look. Pino is the only dog in our home who gets (elaborated) haircut. My sister assumed this task acting as though she’s expert in this field. The problem is, the victim wouldn’t sit still. He would even use his paw to fend off her mom’s hands. But my sister is persistent and determined.

Better view!

A straight cut there, a slanted cut here, then a quick comb—voila—Pino has a new bangs to be proud of.

Better look?

What else can we do but to laugh, and Pino, as though knew he’s being mocked move away from the detractors. Seeing his new bangs is like seeing a new side kick of Dora. Boots can now step aside. But I can’t say muy bien to my sister, but she did her best. Like what they say practice makes perfect. I don’t know if other aspin in our home would volunteer to be her next victim. I bet Pino is shy a little to parade his new look.

Aspin Einstein!

Looks like Teddy needs some combing with the brush beside him. Nonetheless he’s eager to explain the Theory of Cuteness:

E = m(c x c)
It’s that simple. Who would have forgotten the happy ending of the story? Will IC, the Snow White of our household, found her prince charming and live happily ever after?

Young IC, white as snow.

The Unexpected Guest

If I’m one of the seven dwarfs, my name would be “Sleepy” yet I was just as startled as any of the dwarfs when the unexpected guest arrived in our home—a small white puppy peeping from inside the plastic bag carried by my uncle. The puppy is now known as IC whose mother was born in our house and was later adopted by my uncle, who is a seafarer.

So IC was born and grew up not in a castle but in a barge that guides the immense ship docking in the pier. My uncle told us that she loves to go swimming, a hobby she can’t pursue. Because they are no longer allowed to keep dogs, my uncle decided to give her to us—rather to me. (Wondering why? So do I.)

It happened almost three years ago in the month of January, the time of the year we celebrate IC’s birthday since my uncle can’t recall how old is she when she left the barge and embarked on the journey to land.

A New Family

Didn’t I say that IC was given to me? At that time Pino is the only dog of our family and he was owned, and therefore, the responsibility of my sister. I was happy in taking part in caring for Pino, yet I wasn’t eager to have one.

So when IC came as though delivered by a huge bird like in cartoon, I’m the most eligible candidate—according to my sister and parents. (They used to encourage us before we have 5 dogs.) Though she’s all white, she’s not as shaggy as Pino. But the thought of her ending up on a plate, as “azocena” or dog meat, is too bothersome that I accepted the responsibility.

Indeed, life is full of surprises; in just a day, I had accepted a duty—of a lifetime—that I wasn’t asking for.

The first task, I had to accomplish other than nurturing her is to give a name. Inspired by her all-throughout-white coat, I thought of “Snow White” yet somehow I settled for IC derived from the cold, clear ice. But there’s no ”cold treatment,” maybe at first.

As days went by, she became part of our family. She thought me many things as she was growing up. In fact, everything I know in taking care of dogs, apart from what my sister taught me, is the result of “trial and error” methods I had to go through as a newbie dog owner.

Unlike Pino who you wouldn’t notice if he’s been out all day or haven’t taken a bath in a week, IC looks as if her coat is used in dusting. My mom reprimands me if IC appears shabby. But when she has taken a bath, everybody in the house notices her spick-and-span look and touches her all day, even the next, as long as she’s white as a snow.

When I accepted the job, I wasn’t fully aware or unmindful of what I get myself into. Having her is not a joke. Patience and diligence are among the values I have reaped till this day. Time went fast, my puppy has entered another journey—motherhood.

Affairs of the Heart
IC found her prince charming: Pino. Together, they have a family of their own.

First litter:
We’re all excited. Chuckie stayed with us. (2 dogs + 1 = 3 dogs)

Bungy, female

Chuckie, male

Santi, female

Second litter:
We hope that there will be another Chuckie, and it did come true, as Dyna was born. Kermit stayed with us because of the unusual condition of her hind feet. (3 + 1 = 4 dogs) My parents were complaining, yet still loving the growing woof family.

Cotto, male

Dyna, female

Kermit, female

Third litter:
4 – 1 (a dear puppy has gone to heaven) = 3 dogs. A number that can make my mom celebrate—or not.

We had planned, not to have more puppies, but our failure gave birth to Buchie and Chuchie (3 + 2 = 5 dogs). My parents are on strike. Perhaps, it’s their fate to walk on earth, to see the sun rise, and to make us busy all the more.

None is a copycat of IC: white coat and liver nose. If there was, I’ll name him Rudolph, the pink nose doggie.

Fourth litter: its not going to happen, for the next five years or not anymore. No more puppies.

Happy Ending?

IC is taking a break from motherhood. Perhaps she should resign because we also need a grand vacation from our work in what I like to call “puppy all-day care center.” All our relatives, neighbors, and friends wanting to adopt puppies of IC and Pino will have to look somewhere else.

IC is single again and receiving a regal treatment. Occasionally she sleeps in our room. It’s evident that she’s recovering from three consecutive litters: she’s getting bigger; she’s looking better. (Her hair that dwindles every time she gave birth has grown.)

I don’t want to imagine anymore what would have happened to her if she weren’t adopted in our family. Instead, like a storyteller, I’d like to say just as in the story “Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs,” and they live happily ever after.

2011: the First New Year of the “Chies”

At the age of seven months old Buchie and Chuchie welcomed 2011 on the last Friday evening and had spent Christmas in our household with their family. It’s just sad that Chuckie wasn’t there to celebrate with us; 2011 supposed to be his second New Year—but that was the only tear-inducing part of the celebration—the rest is all about fun, fun, fun.

Early that day, the Aspin family for the first time took a bath one after the other. Usually my sister and I divide them into two groups: first is scheduled for a certain day, second the following day. Later I bragged to my parents that they are all looking and smelling good, enough for them to stay inside the house as 2011 is about to come.

Yummy Morcon not to be missed in Media Noche!

Since Christmas we allow them to indulge on what our family managed to prepare for the occasion. They had their favorites: pansit, popcorn from Goldilocks (only for them) and mocha cake. (The black forest is strictly for human consumption no matter how pitiful they look at us as we eat, especially the chocolate chips with gusto.) Buchie and Chuchie discovered another favorite of their family—the luscious, sweet, meaty, Morcon which Pino managed to have more because he patiently sat beside us as we eat. May be he was more like guarding the food and would stop us before we devour it all.

Kermit under her fortress—sofa.

We were having fun until such time the deafening sound of firecrackers started. We humans can smile as we gaze in the fireworks coloring the sky, but to animals its sound is nothing but a menace. This issue made me worried because I don’t know yet how Buchie and Chuchie will adapt. Will they be like Pino who remains calm and sleepy or be like IC who trembles, crouch under the sofa? Fortunately, though they are much closed to their mom, they emulate their courageous dad in dealing with the pesky noise-and-air pollution-in-one. Kermit, on the other hand, found shelter and security under the sofa, yet going out occasionally if she thinks treats are up for grab.

When 2011 arrived, I didn’t urge them to jump because I don’t believe in the superstition that you’ll be taller by jumping in New Year’s Eve; besides if it’s true I don’t want them to grow anymore. Their current height is ideal—we like them just the way they are.

The first four days was over. For the rest of the year there will be many changes. I’ll try to impose the old-yet-hard-to-do New Year’s resolution to IC—losing weight by dieting and exercise. I’ll regularly watch dog TV and practice what I’ve learned including the dog tricks—I’ll patiently teach them. (I do appreciate them doing the “sit” when told to but I know they can do better than that.)

Overall, I wish them to be healthy. The “Chies” and Kermit occasionally have lack of appetite. But a change or giving one of their favorites—is the best, quick remedy. Their parents, though getting older, are fit. And for this blog I’ll try to have its make over done at the end of the month.

Much to do in 2011: New Year’s resolution to make or break and more blogging. May Aspin gains more respect. May Filipino dogs make the higher leap in the Year of the Rabbit.

Shaggy Smiley

In a rare event, I convinced myself to go out last Sunday; my sister and I accompanied my mom and aunt to their “senior citizens’ day out” in Luneta Park. From there we part ways and head to SM Manila on foot, a good exercise for the lower extremities.

Beef Stew for adult and Beef and Rice for puppy.

Many items are on sale but I didn’t find one for my “inaanak” nor for myself. So we went to Ace Hardware to see their assortment of dog supplies. I guess visiting such or similar store has become a habit that started when I went to its branch in SM Annex, North Ave. where I bought a plastic dog muzzle (busal) for Pino.

On the shelves I spotted Pet One wet dog foods on sale. Compare to foreign brands, Pet One’s regular price is cheaper (40%) yet we were able to save more with the rebates. Chuchie and Buchie can enjoy the Pet One Beef and Rice Choice Cuts and the rest of crew can have Beef Stew Choice Cuts.

Because, I’m not familiar with the brand Pet One, I search the net. The company specializes in dog food: wet, dry, and gourmet; all are made in the Philippines, so that explains the affordability. With the quality, Chuchie and the gang, I guess have approved as they’ve cleaned their bowls so well—nothing was left, not even a nugget of beef.

The more affordable and luscious the product is the happier are the pet owner and most especially the drooling pooches.

Back to the shelves. I think it’s worth mentioning that you can also find dog clothes, beddings (if it’s on sale, my sister would have bought it too), and other supplies. If you’re looking for a dog muzzle, at Ace Hardware, SM Manila, you can choose from wire, cloth, and plastic dog muzzle.

So when you decide to stroll in Manila, you can explore, too, this has-it-all hardware store and don’t’ forget to buy a “pasalubong” or treats for your four-legged pals.

Meet My Huggable Uncle

Teddy, Pino’s brother, is the uncle of Chuchie; he was adopted by my cousin who lived next door.Fortunately, I can visit him any time and last Sunday I deliberately visited to take photos. I didn’t have a hard time because he sits when ask and didn’t shy away from my camera (a dog w/o photophobophobia). What makes it funny is that he loves to be photographed. May you enjoy his photos as much as I did in our photo shoot.
Teddy here is proud to show off one of his tricks—paw shake. I think the other trick is sitting. But now, I have another reason to visit SM Annex—not for gizmo but for pooch necessities.

At the lower ground floor of the mall, I found Ace Hardware, a store where you can find anything you need for home improvement. So what was I doing there?

My sister asked me to buy dog muzzle (busal) for Pino because he’s having the annual vaccination. Her favor was coupled with an advice, that is, to see if I can find it in Ace Hardware.

An affordable Muffy blue dog bowl.

Before going there, I went first to the best two places to look for pet supply in North Edsa: first at the supermarket at Landmark (beside Trinoma Mall) where I found many cat and dog foods, few collars, and other pet supplies. Next stop is the SM Hypermarket at the Block where I bought a new dog bowl to replace what Chuchie torn. Bio Research is on my mind. But I opted not to take a look because the last time I went there, only few dog supplies were available; and I can’t remember seeing a dog muzzle in the store.

The last option is Ace Hardware. To my relief, I was able to find dog mask of different sizes. I didn’t hurry in choosing the one which will fit Pino, because I don’t want to go back again just because it’s too small or too big. I think I’m done hunting for that day.

Medium size plastic dog muzzle.

Plastic dog muzzle of different sizes were mixed with collars on the lower shelves. Such arrangement made me think that those items are on sale, yet I might be wrong about it. Still I suppose it is affordable (less than Php 150) and wouldn’t break easily. Inside the store, two-high shelves are filled with dog and cat stuffs: collar, bowl, food, and toys.

I first doubt my sister about her notion of Ace Hardware as a pet supply store as well. Because I wasn’t too weary scouring and I myself want to prove her claim, I went to the store and didn’t regret trusting my sister.

Now I not only know where to go if my computer needs an upgrade but also for my four-legged pals. And about the dog muzzle, my sister had Pino try it on—what a perfect fit—my effort is not wasted.

I used to have long walks in malls if items are on sale but when we have our furry pals, things have change. I still love going to malls, yet in terms of their needs—my sister and I pitch in to buy what they must have, whether on sale or not.

Mystery Hole?

Can you guess what it is? Look closely. First clue, it’s not a mouse hole. Second, I don’t think rats prefer to chew on plastic.

Make a guess.

Time to reveal the mysterious hole.

The culprit is not a rodent but a mischievous Aspin by the name of Chuchie. She ruined her mom’s bowl. I thought she was just playing with it, but the holes—small and big—proved otherwise. She did it again—being a pioneer—but this time, in ruining the bowl; I hope others wouldn’t follow her lead.

I better make sure to take her bowl right after she eats and keep her paws from reaching the one in sight, especially her dad’s bowl bought a few months ago; otherwise, I shouldn’t be surprised to see more mouse holes.

Buchie the “Unwanted”

Before IC’s third litter was born, their fate has been decided. Chuchie is deliberately and instantly owned by my sister because she resembles Chuckie, our Aspin puppy who died a month before his first birthday, while Buchie became the “unwanted,” especially by my parents for a primary reason: we have four pooches including Chuchie to keep us busy. Though my sister and I wanted her to stay with us and most importantly with her parents and siblings. We admitted ourselves that our hands are full already. But we did succeed in convincing our parents to let Kermit stay for good, so I the thought of, perhaps, successfully doing the trick twice for Buchie lingered in my mind.

Unwanted Features

Every time our relatives and friends see Pino, IC, and Chuckie (see their family tree) they enthusiastically express their interest of adopting future puppies provided that they are “balbon” (furry), a quality that turns an ordinary looking Aspin into an attention-grabbing pure breed dog, as in the case of Chuckie. Such discrimination should be suppressed through the advocacy of PAW’s “Aspin is in.”

We thought at first we wouldn’ have difficulty finding a family to take care of Buchie because she and Chuchie resemble the physique of Chuckie when they were born: chubby, shaggy, and with huge paws. But then as days passed, they changed considerably—too different—a far cry from what my friends and relatives thought of as an “ideal puppy” for adoption. To make it worse, I discovered a mass above her tummy. It could be a threat to Buchie’s health, but ironical it is probably one of the reasons how Buchie found a home sweet home.

Staying for Good

In instances my parents insists of giving away Buchie to anyone who wants a puppy, I readily express an argument: the mass of Buchie according to our research on the Internet is detrimental at some point. Tthe vet, who examined her when they had an anti-rabies vaccination on the city veterinary office, further supported my claim. According to the vet, if the mass grows bigger, surgery is the only option. A quite scary prognosis!

On the contrary, the mass serve like the magical stone that gives power to Darna; as in Buchie’s case, it gave her the power to stay permanently in our house. That makes them 5 men’s best friend living with us. (I think we also need such fictitious stone to give us power, especially my sister and I who are hands-on in looking after their welfare. Having all of them is tiring yet rewarding in many ways: I’ve learned many lessons only them (their kind) can teach to mankind.

More Good News and Changes

Fortunately, I can’t feel the mass anymore perhaps it has served it’s purpose. (Because of her condition, my parents pity Buchie so much that they gave her a home). How does she look now? Her colors (white and tan) are the same as Kermit only lighter. And if you’ll look closely, you’ll notice her eye is bordered with black making the other eye look smaller. An optical illusion that we until now are being fooled from time to time. And her coat is shorter and thinner than Chuchie.

Regardless of her appearance, she was endeared to our family especially to IC, her mom whom she loves to hang out with contrary to her sister. Buchie also developed the habit of eating anything. While body massage, is a vice she must have inherited from Chuckie. But I’m happy that she doesn’t forget the sit command that she easily learned after teaching her several times.

No matter what she look or how many habits or vices she develops or how many tricks she can perform, Buchie is now a member of our family—much loved—no longer unwanted.

Animal Cemetery in the Philippines

Scratches on the furniture, chewed shoes, and uprooted plants are some of the mischiefs along with the good deeds of our dogs are what is left to us when they—depart for good—or to ease one’s longing, we can say they’ve accomplished their job.

Pertaining to such dreaded-to-be-discussed topic is a good news for pet owners, especially residing in Manila, that calls for celebration: the proposed animal cemetery in Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

We owe it to Rodolfo N. Lacsama, the Manila City Councilor of District 2; he proposed an ordinance to have an animal cemetery in Manila either in North or South Cemetery. Finally, somebody from the government step up for the welfare of our loyal companions who are protected through the Animal Welfare Act which served as the stimulus of the author for his proposal.

According to Lacsamana, having a cemetery for animals can encourage proper treatment to animals, like cats and dogs, the common domesticated pets in the country.

Many pet lovers, I’m sure, can’t wait for the proposal to materialize as soon as possible. While waiting, people can resort to other alternatives. I found an old article from Inquirer while looking up on this topic, so I’m adding up another tidings to this post.

PAWS to the Rescue Even for the Last Time

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society is located in Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights in Quezon City, at which part of the land was turned into cat and dog cemetery.

The area is devoted for the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center wherein cats and dogs are being taken care of, but people kept on asking a resting place for their dearly-departed pets. The PARC management at first accommodated individuals who don’t have burial ground since they live in condominiums.

In exchange, pet owners must pay a minimum donation of Php 500 and if you want to have your own message engraved on the memorial wall, Php 2,000 (for each tile) is added. The proceeds are used in the operation of PARC.

All are for the benefits of your pet that you can visit, and the dogs and cats that are given the best care because of the donation.

A Nearby Haven

The last resort, if for some reason (one’s pet is neither cat nor dog) you can’t bury your pal in the cat and dog cemetery in the PARC, is to look outside your house. You can bury your beloved pet in the backyard where you can pay a visit anytime. This option is economical and in my opinion can help the owner in coping with his lost.

I experienced myself burying a dog in the backyard when Chuckie died last February, a month before his supposed first birthday; his demise is too soon for us. But as days go by our family is able to move on and are now too busy with Chuchie and Buchie, the new addition (and perhaps the last, for now) and source of joy of our family.

While they are still around, we are preoccupied of taking care of them that we fail to think or prepare for their departure nobody knew when to take place. The establishment of animal cemetery in the Philippines will definitely ease one’s mind and help to cope through the toughest day in the lives of the deceased pet and his grateful owner who experienced unconditional love whether in brief or for a long time.

We can send them off with goodbyes but we still have the responsibility to make sure they are treated well for the last time.

Resources:

Animal Cemetery Proposed (Manila Bulletin)
Typically when I receive something wrapped like a gift or package I would shake and guess the content several times before opening, but in this case, mystery was stripped off—I need not do my old habits. It contained dog deworming tablets for Chie and the rest of Aspin family rather should I say for the intestinal worms whose days are numbered inside their hosts’ intestines.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

Zipyran

On a second thought, I could have had a guessing game because the dewormer (specifically Zipyran) comes with something that can make Chuchie excited and stand up on her hind feet—free, bone-shaped treats! We are not expecting such gift from the online purchase, but I still believe that some things in life are free. Yehey! Even the worms will love it too, if they still make it after the assault of dog deworming tablets.

Fair share of goodies: 1 for each 5 Aspins

The content is revealed but I’m sure you’re asking where it came from. A flashback prior to the delivery is what we need. The mastermind of eliminating the parasites is my sister who found ways to earn online and eventually tried buying on the Internet. She ordered Zipyran in Pet-tastic, an online shop for dogs here in the Philippines.

“Give me, give me!”

It is the second time she bought from Pet-tastic. The good customer service and fast delivery makes her a somewhat regular customer that is perhaps the reason why yummy treats (according to Chuchie) were included or maybe because it’s an early Christmas gift. Either way our pooches wouldn’t say no for treats, and I as well, especially if it’s free. Pets wouldn’t care about the cost of their meal; on the contrary, owners are very much concerned so any dog food that has a discount or complimentary would help no matter how little.

As of now, they already had dog worm treatment Two weeks later there will be another bout between Zipyran and remaining parasites so as to eradicate the population of the latter.
As I approached her, she acts as if I wasn’t there; normally she would run towards me and stand in her hind feet.

What came over Buchie, is that a new trick?

She’s so quiet, behave, and busy. Beef bone is all to blame. My dad gave Buchie her first bony treat that is taken from our lunch “Nilagang Baka” or beef stew. Typically my dad would give them bread to munch; he do so because he actually don’t have much choice: our dogs are all ogling, sitting which means they are ready and waiting, and barking as if complaining when my dad refuse or take too long to give the tidbit.

In those times Buchie is her same old self: trying to get people’s attention, asking for a reward, and staying close to IC, her mom. But when she had beef bone she goes crazy over it.

Busy as a bee!

There’s no stopping her. She chewed it as hard as she could. (I can tell by the sound she made.) Afterwards, it broke into two.

You can’t have it all, just one at a time.

I moved the bone closer to me so as to take a good photo whenever she drops the huge part; she then engrossed herself with the little bone, then move back to the bigger one. She’s head over heels infatuated with her new favorite.

There’s no way of breaking their bond.

Nilagang Baka / Beef Stew

That’s what I thought at first. Soon after, Buchie left the beef bone—wet and hurt. Poor fellow. Buchie is back to her old self again—she then came near her mom, eyeing for the leftover she consumed as well. It must be Buchie’s day because she’s the only one who had a bony share of our lunch. My dad is not playing favorites with our furry pals, and so am I; Chuchie and the rest will have their own hard-to-chew treat and experience brief infatuation when we have “Nilagang Baka” again.

Tip:

We only give cooked beef bone because it is stronger than pork or poultry that would easily break into splinter, as they have no match for the sharp teeth and tough jaw of dogs.

Kermit’s First Season

I’m happy for Kermit because she made it—her first season has ended and passed, that means she has zero possibility of pregnancy. What a victory for us! Our teamwork has paid off. Since we discovered the unusual condition of her hind feet, we have decided that though spaying is not an option—she will remain—forever single, through our effort that is put to the test afterwards.

Several days after her first birthday, male dogs in our neighborhood come near her sniffing the scent that serve as an invitation to her first season. I first noticed her being “in heat” when I saw drops of blood inside her condominium (the term we use to our dogs’ kennel just for fun). From that period, I seldom take her for a walk too far from our house. And if I did, our trip is a quick one; and when dogs were in sight or dare to approach Kermit I drove them away acting like a personal bodyguard, a position that lasted only a few days because females first season is less severe and shorter than the succeeding one.

I’m done with Kermit but relaxation is still not within my reach—IC, the matriarch, is in season later on. “Brace yourself,” is what I told my sister and myself. The tough task of guarding is ahead of us—I’m sure of that.

Bowl of Knowledge:

Female dogs reach sexual maturity at about eight to twelve months. And for the first time they will go into season. Within two to three weeks they are “in heat”, so don’t be surprised if your female pooch will have many suitors—some might become loyal as female dogs usually go into season twice a year.

Chuckie the “Great”

Today is All Souls Day; prior to this day many spooky story or movies were shown that everyone had enough already so I wouldn’t write anything relevant to Halloween for now. The creepy joke is as far as I can go in this topic. Instead, I decided to write a tribute for a friend, a companion, and a family.

Chuckie the “Great” is the apple of the eye of everyone in our family. Though he is a Filipino dog, one wouldn’t have a clue, a quality he inherited from his father and a little from her mom. It’s not just his western look that made us fall in love with him. He has unique personalities. I’ll take you back in his journey in life: the joy, misadventure, and hardship—how hard he fought till the end and how we are living without him by our side.

Happiness Comes in Black and White

When my first dog IC had been in her first season in 2009, that is, she was matured enough to give birth, our family was about to receive a gift—that we’ll all love. Pino and IC has produced three cute puppies; one of them is a puppy covered with black and white markings, the quality inspired me to come up with the name Chuckie, a brand of chocolate drink that has a mascot of a cow. The truth is we all think of him that way. “Don’t give away that cow,” was what my mom said when she first and every time she looked at him. The other puppies in the first litter of IC were also adorable, but I guessed we were all enchanted by Chuckie, from the very start.

Favoritism is inevitable when Chuckie was born. We couldn’t help it because he possessed the endearing qualities of each of our dogs, in appearance and temperament: furry, loyal, and loving. Later he developed a unique habit that we were amazed and bewitched to comply with his bidding. As soon as he saw us approaching he immediately rolled and lay on his back exposing his tummy—which means we have to rub it either with our hands or feet (if I’m too lazy to stoop or sit on the floor). My mom who first claimed ownership of this fastidious dog, always smile or laugh and like us has no choice—but to do the tummy-rub-rub service to our permanent customer. That’s not his only vice, he also wants to have a massage; but this time, unfortunately, I was the only one who obliged or have the heart. It’s not just his back but also head that I massage gently. What is so funny about it is that we started while he was sitting on the floor yet he ended up lying on the floor with eyes half awake and motionless body. But I don’t have all the time to keep him in such state; sometimes Chuckie gets up as soon as I stop or he lie still until sleep wins over as I make the noiseless escape.

Closeness and Longing

As he grew, the more he was endeared to us, especially to my sister who loves to carry and to cuddle him. Her closeness has ensured me of having someone to look after Chuckie because I had to recuperate after a surgery. For about a month, I moved with pain and difficulty that gradually subside in the succeeding months. During those times, my sister became more closed with Chuckie while attending to Pino (his dog), IC, and Kermit.

I did miss my fussy customer; all I can do is to give her a pat on the head or rub on his back. Every time he wants to sit on my lap, I have to move away or have my sister do it for me. In a few months I can go back to work as his massage therapist—it’s the thought I kept inside my head so as not to feel sorry about him being rejected. But a tragedy, we never imagined to happen to our favorite pet.

Cupid Broke Our Hearts

Chuckie loves to run in the morning yet loves to lie on our marble floor for the rest of the day. He is such a home buddy puppy. Even with lack of penchant for outdoor, we didn’t expect him to be sicked. Once he first had loss an appetite for food then recovered, he occasionally feels ill the following months. A scenario that frightened us though we didn’t showed. Yet at the back of our mind we knew that it is a hint to a dreadful day we never wished to come—yet—after Valentine’s Day—it did arrive as Chuckie left us for good.

We are saddened by his demise, but the feeling didn’t sink in to us yet that day because we were preoccupied of finding his a resting place—even for the last time we wanted to give the best care we can provide. Because of the tragedy that is a nightmare to all dog lovers, I realized how important to have a dog cemetery in the Philippines, much even better a pet cemetery for the departed companion of animal lovers in the country. My sister and I had bury a puppy in the backyard before IC and Pino were born; but it was different back then because we haven’t spent much time with Haru before he died. More memories, more pain. Our neighbor who is also our relative dug the ground filled with huge stones. It’s the only spot where Chuckie can lie for eternity.

The succeeding days that turned into months without our beloved Chuckie were the difficult moments for all of us in the house. My mom occasionally and vocally express how she miss Chuckie watching her quietly while preparing a meal for them and how she long for the moment she would take him out for a walk. Whereas my aunt argued that we should never have another dog; my mom second that notion. Grieving is inevitable if you have a dear dog that someday will leave and all that remain are good and bad memories. I understand how they feel but I don’t agree. I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to be happy with a companion because of fear of losing. The important thing is the joy brought about by the relationship though without common language has flourished and found a home in our heart and in our mind.

His paw reaching for your hands might mean his asking for a treat. His barking might mean he wants to go out or just merely getting your attention. All these gestures and more are summed up one in one word: LOVE!

May you rest in peace Chuckie! I now have a new costumer who is named after you—Chuchie.

And to all grieving and coping for a pet loss, you don’t have to get over, forget them, or fear finding another creature in need of care. Don’t let fear overcomes love that you can pass on to other creation of our Heavenly Father, even to a dog resembling a cow.

They are like gifts wrapped not with colorful wrappers but with coat of different markings and thickness. Amidst diversity, they are full of joy and surprises for everyone!

Aspin's Unusual Trip: The Chase

You might want to read the first part before proceeding or if you’re into Halloween then don’t forget to read the last paragraph on this page--anyway it’s just a joke.

Going Home

The drizzle of rain forced us to leave after an hour, but I managed to urge my sister to take our Aspin puppies for more walk (that’s how much I’m proud of them). I wanted them to make the most out of our trip. Everything went well till we saw ahead probably a mixed-breed dog; we immediately turned and moved towards the gate. The dog was far when we turned our back on him then we heard a bark—coming from that same stray dog behind us. My sister managed to scare him away. He must be a male because he followed us so as to get closed to our beautiful puppies (that’s just a theory of mine). When we arrived at home, I can tell the Chies were saying “Home sweet home,” because they lay comfortably on the floor and quickly fell asleep. They might be so tired of walking and seeing many things: cars, jeepney, people, and a dog they are not familiar with.
