It's been a while and I was starting to feel like I was losing touch with you. I know that sounds silly because we're all connected and all that jazz, but sometimes it takes an olive branch... or some such metaphor. Consider this my "I'm sorry that I'm not around," or my "I miss y'all even though I don't say it."

This episode isn't too unlike the last one, with a few added little treats and tricks. I've done my best again to incorporate different types of music that you might not expect to hear together, and as always, done my best to share some of my favorite songs with you all. They say a picture is worth 1,000 words right? Well how much is a song worth? How much is a mix worth? For extra credit, listen to the mix and hit me up on twitter or however you normally reach out, and tell me how many words this podcast was worth to you, and why? I'm going to stop rambling directly, but not until I ask one more question... If we're all connected, can you all feel what I was feeling when I put this mix together?

My name is none other than Joe Scudda....one badass muthafucker!! Im a fixture at local dive bars, a lover of beer & I do this rap thing too hahaha

2. What started your music career?

Meeting 9th Wonder and then him introducing me to the rest of the Justus League let me see that doing the music thing was a realistic goal. Then when Littile Brother put me on the "Lovin It" record that really kicked it off and opened up the door for me.

3. What inspires you to do what you do?

Everyday life ...the fun and the struggles from it. The guy that works 55 hrs a week to feed his family inspires me! The guy in the bar having more fun than everybody and doesnt care what people think inspires me. My friends and family are a big inspiration to me also. I could write a whole albim or movie based all off my brothers!! They are buck!! Im a real down to earth blue collar type guy and thats what im drawn to write about.

4. Tell us one secret, one truth, and one lie..

Im still in love with Julia Roberts! Im notorious for driving with no license & no insurance. I hate the taste of whiskey.

5 If you could listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

•HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE•

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are a family, literally. They are the heirs to the great musical tradition of Chicago. Their father Phil Cohran trained them from age three to play hard, fast and together. They boast a fan base as wide and eclectic as Barack Obama, David Byrne, Q-Tip, Jay-Z, Erykah Badu, Jools Holland and thousands more. Now with the news that they along with Mos Def and drummer extraordinaire Tony Allen will form the new Gorillaz outfit, you realize that this is no ordinary collective.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE), a band comprised of eight brothers, all sons of Sun Ra trumpeter and songwriter Phil Cohran, have been playing since they were three years of age and have inherited a lineage deeper than most bands will ever attain. Raised on the south side of Chicago, their musical heritage is rooted in their genes. They have brothers and sisters that are professional musicians, their mothers are singers and their father, Phil Cohran, a legendary visionary and teacher has music experiences from the 1940s in St. Louis to his seminal role with Sun Ra in Chicago in the 1950s.

As Sun Ra moved to the east coast in 1960, Cohran stayed behind in Chicago to be with his family. As his children grew, Cohran worked as a musical activist and educator, which led to the establishment of the Sun Ark in a warehouse behind their family home. At night while the children slept, they would hear their father rehearsing with his band the ‘Circle of Sound.’ At six in the morning, they were awoken to practice music for several hours before going to school. From an early age they were a central part of their father’s Youth Ensemble. At night they listened to NWA and Public Enemy, and Ice Cube and Eazy-E were their heroes.

By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they concentrated on their music full time. With a mix of their jazz roots and their hip-hop sensibility, they made a living for themselves on the streets of Chicago. While performing on a subway platform, they stumbled upon their name when a man who watched them for hours, missing train after train, proclaimed that he has been “hypnotized” by their music. With their composer skills aiding them to create a sound wholly their own, the group moved to New York City where they played with Mos Def and Erykah Badu.

From a chance encounter in November of 2005, and support from numerous artists, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has released an album brimming with musical magic. Recorded on the back of the Africa Express trip to Lagos last October, during a three-day stop-over in London, with the drummer's stool shared by Malcolm Catto from the The Heliocentrics, Sola Akingbola from Jamiroquai, and the one and only Tony Allen, and other musical luminaries Flea and Paul Simenon, this album is all that is cracked up to be and more.

In May 2009, Blur and Gorillaz’s frontman Damon Alburn’s Honest Jon label dropped the Hypnotic’s first official full length studio album to accolades the music world over. With the sound, form, and structure in their musicianship and songwriting, the HBE have the ability to put on live shows that would put veteran bands to shame.

Born into a highly intellectual and creative family that exposed him to everything from classical to Motown to Jazz, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has been dedicated to music literally his entire life. At age four while on a visit to a Suzuki Program Institute his brother was attending, Miguel first was exposed to the violin and decided then and there that he wanted to start lessons. At 12 he switched to the viola and also began composing orchestral music. During high school he received various scholarships to study with some of the world's greatest musicians which led to him attending USC on a full scholarship.

Taking an unusual route for a string player, Miguel has been adamant about pursuing deeply involving and creative roles in the music making process such as composing, writing and producing original pieces. He has recorded and performed with a vast array of legendary musicians such as Ray Charles,Quincy Jones, Billy Higgins, Esa-Pekka Solonen, Stevie Wonder, John Williams, Dr. Dre and more. He has appeared on the Grammy's, American Music Awards, Jay Leno Show, MTV and BET.

In 2008 he took on the daunting task of adapting the late J Dilla¹s music to the orchestral format and made his debut as a conductor at the Timeless: A Suite For Ma Dukes concert where he directed an orchestra performing his Dilla-inspired compositions. One of the most unique qualities about Miguel is his inherent need to challenge himself and master new terrains, he has various different groups he performs with and is currently building towards touring with his own orchestra.

Madlib is one of the most ambitious and engaging figures in modern hip-hop history. An enthusiastic crate-digger and multi-instrumentalist with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib has an expansive style and deft touch for composition that makes him one of hip hop's most sought-after producers.

He began his career with hip-hop trio Lootpack, who debuted on Tha Alkoholiks' 1993 album 21 & Over; but, it is through his decade-long relationship with Stones Throw Records that he diversified his musical output. Often shying away from the limelight, many of his releases have been under various aliases.

In 2000, he released The Unseen under the guise of his alter-ego, Quasimoto. He followed up a year later with Yesterdays New Quintet, a project that infused his exploration of jazz with electronic style and hip-hop substance.

Since 2003, Madlib has put out several releases reflecting his growing versatility: Shades of Blue, a jazz remix project for Blue Note; Champion Sound with J Dilla under the name Jaylib; and Madvillainy, his partnership with MF Doom. In 2008, he released Sujinho under the name Jackson Conti a collaboration based around Brazilian percussionist Ivan "Mamão" Conti on Mochilla.

Shafiq week continues at BNB Headquarters. In addition to coppin official copies of the album, BNB has shown full support to this project. We have twittered, facebook'd, and talked up "En' A-Free-Ka" as much as possible this week because we completely and fully LOVE this album.

BNB celebrated the album release with Shafiq and friends at Turntable Lab, for a listening party and in-store. The energy was great and the free Colt 45 (lol) was flowing. I think I even saw a couple Jarritos floating around.
Wednesday night was another great one, where we celebrated at Shoes House. Shafiq was present, but tired, and played the background this go round. The album pumped through the speakers and kept the vibe circulating as House Shoes and J1 traded off on the tables. Detroit's Danny Brown rounded out the night with a classic live performance. Another great night. Shouts to Big Pooh, Big Dho, Rocio, and Andres.

Twitter is commonplace for us all in 09, but just a minute ago I was silenced by a series of posts. A list of RIP's was circulated and RT'd, stemming from BNB brother @Rhettmatic, and it kind of stopped me in my tracks. At times we RT without even thinking, but this time I couldnt even do it. The list was long. And the names included friends. And it hurt.

So I want to take a moment of silence, to honor those mentioned on the list. And those not mentioned. And for my family, and your family that has gone on before us all. Take a second, pause your day, and really cherish the memories and honor the lives of those who have touched your life that are no longer on earth.

You’ve probably heard this ad nauseam at this point, but Los Angeles is the current musical mecca of the western world. While the rest of the domestic musical climate is stuck on tight jeans, soul-less snares, auto-tune and the death of auto-tune, the city of Angels has its collective vision on the future. Shafiq Husayn, of the much buzzed about Sa-Ra Creative Partners, is the next L.A. resident to break through to the surface with his debut solo album Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka coming out on Plug Research October 6th.

Rather than present you a collection of songs made over a given time, Shafiq would like to take you on an experience. The title of the record draws on ideas of freedom and exploration, Ka means mind or spirit in Kemetic, so being in A-Free-Ka literally means a free state of mind. From the first couple of bass lines and snares, it is apparent Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka is coming from, and headed to, a different place. The urgency in the percussion of “U.N. Plan” is electrifying and there is something unnerving about the space in which “Cheeba” exists, with its haunting vocal feature from underground powerhouse Bilal. The lead single “Lil’ Girl” featuring UK newcomer Fatima is perhaps the closest the record gets to a straight-forward song, but even beneath the aesthetic sweetness of the ballad the songs lyrics cry to something more complicated, “eventually you shall embrace the last day/ time is running, better choose the fast way.”

“No Moor” plays like a musical history lesson, chronicling the hardly-mentioned Moorish history in North America. The journey that is En A-Free-Ka hits its darkest points with “All Dead” and “Evil Man,” two songs that seem to accompany each other in theme and structure. Another highlight is “Major Heavy,” a tune so sweet that if ever clouds were assigned a melody, this song is where it would happen. The ballad boasts a sung chorus by underground Hip Hop veteran Count Bass D and verses by L.A.’s Sonny Coates.

Classifying Shafiq’s music is self-defeating. The album spans the range from R&B to soul to electronic to afro-beat. There’s hardly any rapping on the album yet the sound is firmly rooted in Hip Hop aesthetics, but Shafiq also enlists the help of numerous talented instrumentalists on the album like Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner and his fellow Sa-Ra partner, Om’Mas Keith. The list of collaborators on the album is large, yet there is somehow more cohesion on this than most modern albums. It is as if Shafiq gathered a village of musicians and singers and led them with his MPC. While many are stuck looking towards the past or each other for direction, Shafiq enlists the best of the past to craft a bold new sonic future for himself and those around him. Truly a Master Teacher.

A New Screening Series Monthly at the Downtown Independent.

Mochilla is dedicated to bringing you music and visuals of the highest order. During the discussions around the successful screening of Postcard from Cali with Jim from the Independent we stumbled upon the idea of a series of Music Documentaries that are obscure, unseen and maybe just didn't have a real run.

We proudly start this series with unequivocally one of the best music documentaries I've ever seen. Still Bill is the story of Bill Withers. It is moving, inspiring and learned. It is a must see for anyone interested in music, the creative process or humanity for that matter. Bill Withers if you don't know is the creator of such soulful hits as Ain't No Sunshine, Lean on Me. Lovely Day, Grandma's Hands and Use Me. His story is unique but his sensitivity is universal.

We will have the (re)Premiere on Friday with very special guests. We will have a little afterparty on the roof after wards please feel free to bring your favorite Bill Withers record to play. There will be some drinks. And there will be very special guests.

For those who cant make Friday - the film will continue to screen on Saturday and Sunday.

We urge you not to miss this. It is an incredible achievement as a film.

NO List. If you can't find $10 to give to a man who's personally responsible for overseeing some of the best Hip-Hop projects and shows of the past 5-10 years, then go skydive in outer space.

Matter of fact, if you can't find $10 to give a man who is personally responsible for you NOT having to listen to wack shit you never heard of (because he's very good at what he does), then you can just go shave your wrists with barb wire. Be careful now...

You know what. Fuck it. Hex has been the unseen torch bearer of Detroit Hip-Hop since Proof and Dilla died. You might never have known it, and you might never have heard about the shit he has made happen, but trust that without him you wouldn't know about half the dope Detroit shit you know about, and on top of all of that shit, he is one of the most genuine, honest, GOOD people I've ever been blessed with meeting.

So if you can't stand the fuck up for good human beings, who don't push dogshit; if you can't reach in your pocket and pay $10 to support the realest nigga on earth, then fuck you, and I'll see to it that the brakes are beaten off of you promptly.
