Blackpool’s three piers, although all things of historical beauty and elegance, each have a unique personality and a significantly diverse offer.

We start in the south, with the adrenaline filled South Pier. Fairground rides, loud music and the smell of popcorn and hotdogs abound as you make your way to the big attractions here. Those of a faint disposition may want to stay away as Skyscreamer throws you up into the skies above Blackpool, Skycoaster plummets you freeflying across the Pier and Maxibounce offers you the ultimate trampolining experience.

Central Pier is a location where the fun of the fairground extends over water. The magnificent big wheel now graces the planks alongside family rides and interesting sidestalls. Great Promenade Show

As you stroll along New South Promenade, you will come across glittering rocks, a decompression tank and the worlds’ largest dancehall mirrorball, but what do these and the 7 other art installations have in common, and what do they have to do with Blackpool?

Each piece is a unique look at the history of this seaside resort from the glamour of the lights, the evocative sounds of the Irish Sea and even the macabre relationship Blackpool has with freak shows and circus. Artists were all commissioned to create a challenging and unique piece of art which makes visitors rethink their experiences at their favourite seaside resort.

Solaris Centre

The Solaris Centre of Environmental Excellence, situated opposite the Great Promenade Show’s Mirrorball, is a shining beacon of self sufficiency and green energy. Wind turbines stand sentry either side of the door, generating energy from the Promenade winds and solar panels help power the many exhibits featuring green ideas and many forms of art and crafts created by local groups.

Grundy Art Gallery

In this delightful little gallery in the heart of Blackpool traditional and modern are shown side by side. Just as Blackpool aims to be at the cutting edge of modern culture yet consistently doffs it’s cap to its heritage and history, Grundy has been displaying ancient and modern items from the Blackpool collection since 1911.

Brilliance

Giant arches loom over Birley Street like a giant rollercoaster during the day and at night transform the artwork, pavements and buildings into a sensory experience of light and sound. A changing schedule of programming allows Brilliance to get involved with what’s on in Blackpool from the Illuminations to Dance Festivals and Showzam!

St John’s Square

Towering over the newly paved St John’s Square is The Wave, a 10m high piece of artwork from which a diver is suspended from a mirror finish wave. Wander a cross the open public space to enjoy the dancing water flumes before sitting in one of the relaxing pavement cafe’s.

Stanley Park

Strolling around Stanley Park, from the formal Italian Gardens, through shaded wild woodlands, around the massive meandering boating lake to the exciting children’s play parks, you can while away a good few hours getting back to nature and watching the kids have good old fashioned fun on the see-saws, slides and climbing frames.

Marton Mere

This bird sanctuary is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its amazing birdlife and also supports a myriad of fauna and flora including dragonflies, butterflies, bats and orchids. Experiencing the varied nature, you would never guess that this was once the site of the town’s old tip!

Salisbury Woodland

This area has been through many changes since it was formally planted gardens, and after a number of years of letting nature take the lead and head up a team of rangers and volunteers, Salisbury Woodland was designated a County Biological Heritage site in 1993.

Snorkelling With Sharks Blackpool

Blackpool Zoo is home to the Pride of Blackpool, four adult African lions: the male, Wallace and females, Gillian, Rachel and Jasmine, a stunning grassed enclosure designed to encourage the lions to bask on the heated ‘pride rock’.

Back in 2008, giraffes made a welcome return to Blackpool Zoo with the introduction of three females from Fota in Southern Ireland, and more swiftly followed. The giraffes are doing well on the parks breeding programme and a newer addition Sonia gave birth to calf O’Grady in October. As tall as they are, Blackpool Zoo lets you get eye to eye with the giraffes in the multi viewing level enclosure.

Blackpool Zoo is not only home to living animals, but also offers visitors a trip back in time with the exciting and educational Dinosaur Safari. The aging and magnificent tortoises form the connection between the ancient and the present as you move from the lands of the prehistoric to the exciting and educational main zoo area.

Blackpool Illuminations

Blackpool Illuminations 2014 keep the resort bathed in stunning scenes of light for 66 nights during the autumn months. From the traditional to the innovative, the Blackpool Illuminations lights have been shining in Blackpool since 1879 when just 8 electric arc lamps lit up the Blackpool Promenade in artificial sunshine – a feat even more fascinating to the visitors of the day as Edison’s electric light bulb did not arrive until the following year! 132 years later, the Blackpool Illuminations continue to amaze visitors young and old with their stunning designs and massive elevated tableaux structures. There are many ways to interact with the Illuminations.

Most of the 3 million annual visitors drive through the 6 miles of Blackpool Promenade lights in their car, but there are many better vantage points to allow you to really interact with this stunning show. Blackpool Tram Tours run nightly along the length of the Promenade, and a round trip will cost you from £6 per adult for a round trip and you will get the chance to ride on an historic or illuminated tram. Open top tours come in a variety of styles from the City Sightseeing open top bus (from £7.50 per adult, family tickets available) or why not snuggle up under a blanket in a horse drawn carriages (prices vary) a very romantic way to travel through the lights!

Locals will tell you the best way to see the lights is on foot, preferably with a bag of chips in your hand! There are numerous chippies along the way offering mouthwatering fish and chips, so pick a point and wander under the warming glow as long as you like. The best starting point would be the Comedy Carpet, heading north to the massive Tableaux structures on Queens Promenade. Or why not reverse this route and finish in the Town Centre where there are numerous bars, restaurants and entertainment venues to finish off your night in style. Blackpool’s town centre has got in on the action in recent years with beautiful displays bringing the town centre to life after dark and culminating with the fascinating sound and light show Brilliance in Birley Street.

Comedy Carpet Blackpool

Bling on Central Promenade is the nearest feature to the Comedy Carpet, where white lamps and over 1 million brilliant white LED’s sparkle in jewel shapes beneath the newly decorated Tower. Blackpool Tower itself literally stands out of the crowd with its new Illuminations decoration. The ‘cake’ at the top of Blackpool Tower is adorned with multi-coloured LED’s which dance and sparkle in a variety of moving patterns. Fans of Pop Art will love the updated Andy Warhol style Local Heads, now revamped as Famous Heads with images of comedians featured in the Comedy Carpet as well as favourite Switch on Stars over the years. In addition Little Histories displays stories of Blackpool residents in colourful cartoon light boxes on North Promenade.

Blackpool Illuminations most famous designer Laurence Lewellyn-Bowen has done it again this year, bringing his classic style to the mechanical Theatre D’Amour telling the story of Blackpool’s entertainment history in the most complex feature ever built by the Illuminations engineers. Weather conditions last year meant a number of family favourite features were significantly damaged by 95mph gusts of wind, but the team at Illuminations have lovingly restored these iconic tableaux including Hickory Dickory Dock, Pirate Tableau and Noddy.

In recent years, Blackpool has come under criticism for the amount of electricity utilised in the annual display, and the resort’s Council is working hard to reduce the carbon footprint of the magical displays. The Illuminations now only use electricity from renewable resources such as wind, hydro and bio-gas,and have replaced many of the traditional lamps with greener LED’s.
