I think it’s scary for a lot of the same reasons that Slender is scary. It’s kind of interesting to see game designers get down to the raw gameplay elements of what makes things scary, you know?

It’s the anticipation. It’s not some nebulous or hard-to-define concept like “setting the tone.” It’s very cut and dry, black and white. The pure essence of why something like Nightmare on Elm Street is scary. The game tells you that there is a monster, it is coming to get you, and you’re helpless to stop it. Either hide or die.

Slender would be nothing without its music cues. Every note you pick up, another layer gets added to the music. The intensity gets increased. And the louder the music gets, the more you know that any second now, you’re going to turn around and it’s going to be there waiting for you.

FNAF turns that concept on its head while still retaining its ldeals. Instead of not looking at the monster, it explicitly tells you to keep very, very close tabs on the monster, because if it gets too close to you, then you die. But then it very intentionally limits your ability to see the monster. Or, er, uh, monsters, as it were.

I also really dig the subtle back story stuff, but some of it feels a little too subtle, I guess. Again, it goes back to what I was saying when I was talking about J.J. Abrams – I don’t want to go digging too deep for your stuff. Don’t tease me with a story and then not tell me how it ends. FNAF kind of does that, especially as the games go on.

I will say that for as positive as I sound about the game, I don’t actually like it, really. I own the Android version of FNAF2 (which as I understand is missing some visual effects from the PC version), and I’ve never felt like making it past the second night. The original FNAF was probably a bit too simple for it to be much fun, so FNAF2 makes you juggle like 8 plates at the same time and that’s not fun either. And the scares definitely aren’t fun. Just loud. And sudden.

The whole game series is like waiting for a very annoying bomb to go off in your face, or something. Calling it a “jump scare simulator” is a bit reductive, but if we’re being honest, it’s not that reductive.

I think FNAF4 needs to be the last one. I think the market is reaching critical mass on how many of these games in such a short span of time can be supported. I mean, jeeze, it hasn’t even been a year since the first FNAF, has it? I’m all for striking while the iron is hot, but you can also hit it so much that the iron’s been stretched too thin to strike anymore, you know?

What I really want is a good Vampire Hunter D game. Either by From Software or by Platinum.

I guess there was a VHD game for the PS1, but it doesn’t look great and does not seem to be fondly remembered.

When you remember that From Software made games like Otogi, combined with the modern Dark Souls sensibilities, could finally bring to pass the idea that From Software could make a REALLY AWESOME CASTLEVANIA GAME.

And Platinum because in a perfect world, Platinum makes every character-action game.

I’ve heard that the Vampire Hunter D manga has a LOT of stuff that was never even touched on in the movies, so hopefully a potential TV show would be pretty cool.

factsinallcaps:

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND JOHN ADAMS ONCE HAD TO SHARE A BED IN A CROWDED INN, AND SPENT A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME ARGUING OVER WHETHER OR NOT THE WINDOW SHOULD REMAIN OPEN DURING THE NIGHT, AND WHETHER AN OPEN WINDOW WAS A HEALTHIER WAY TO SLEEP OR A SUREFIRE WAY TO GET SICK.

I wonder who was of which opinion

FRANKLIN WANTED THE WINDOW OPEN, ADAMS WANTED IT CLOSED.

I wonder who won.

FRANKLIN, BY TOTAL KNOCKOUT. HE KEPT EXPLAINING WHY FRESH AIR IS ACTUALLY GOOD FOR THE BODY UNTIL ADAMS GOT BORED AND FELL ASLEEP, ALLOWING FRANKLIN TO DO AS HE PLEASED RE: THE WINDOW.

#‘close the window ben the draft is intolerable’#‘FRESH AIR IS NOT INTOLERABLE JOHN. FRESH AIR REJUVENATES THE BODY AND MIND JOHN. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS INTOLERABLE JOHN. THIS IS WHY NOBOD#Y LIKES YOU JOHN.’

This is legit. One of the more vivid pieces of information that’s stuck
with me all these years from History class was that
Benjamin Franklin was known for getting nude and opening all the doors
and windows in his house to have an “air bath.”

Back then, nobody bathed with water. People who had fallen in to rivers and spent too long swimming in lakes would often catch colds, so it was thought that, rather than blame the frigid temperatures, it was the water itself that carried sickness. Baths did happen, but usually only once every year. Spending too long in the water was to be feared.

Benjamin Franklin really did think fresh air had cleaning properties and health benefits. At the very least, it probably helped get rid of all of that body funk everybody had.

You recently linked to one of your old blog posts about Adam Orth defending the Xbox One's "always on" tendancies. This kinda made me want to ask you: What do you think of him returning and making Adr1ft, a game "inspired by" those experiences?

I think he was a big dumb idiot at a company with more money than sense.

A lot of people at Microsoft were taught a lesson for that. Some, like Adam Orth, Don Mattrick and Phil Harrison even straight up lost their jobs.

Actually, according to The Verge, most if not all of the original Xbox One launch team has left the company. The Microsoft of today is desperately trying to right the ship and steer it away from the sins that those guys committed. Look, you guys!! Backwards compatibility!!!!

And for some of them, it was a very public affair. I’d argue that Adam Orth was basically tarred and feathered (or as close as you can get on the internet) for what he said.

But some of that was going on two years ago. A lot of people have learned a lot of things from what they said and did.

I try not to hold grudges. I don’t suggest anyone else hold grudges, either.

But… well, he’s saying it’s inspired by that experience? Really? I admit, I don’t see the connection, outside of the navel-gazing concept of “Oh you are disconnected from the world, maaaan! Just like the Xbox One without an internet connection!”

I mean, guys in his situation usually try not to bring attention back to their dirty laundry. “Hey, remember when I said that really dumb thing? I’ve made a game that’s a tangential metaphor for that! That’ll be $14.99, please!”

And, like, looking up the LA Times article on Adr1ft…

Yet out of the ashes have come “Adr1ft,” a narrative-focused game that’s directly inspired by the social-media-driven disaster. “Adr1ft” is about loneliness, about the fear of messing up and the hope that one can emerge from a catastrophe stronger than before.

Why is there a numeral “1” in the title? “One is the loneliest number,” said Orth. After the blow-up, Orth become something of a recluse, and nearly every aspect of “Adr1ft” is in some way related to his experiences.

When talking about artsy stuff, I really try to avoid using the word “pretentious,” because it’s really easy to get yourself in to trouble when saying that. But the fact that that’s the big relation to him being a goon on Twitter? That’s just grasping-at-straws enough to be defined as pretentious in my book. The weight of an ego bears down upon me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool looking game, but if he’s trying to push it as this big empowering thing, this great moment of triumph because he stuck his foot in his mouth….

I’m probably going to have more than a little trouble seeing past that.

azookara:

blazehedgehog:

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that a Super Mario 64 level seems to work so well in Sonic Lost World.

On one hand, it’s cool that it can handle a smaller, slower environment like that. 3D Sonic games haven’t really had the type of intricate control that would fit in with that gameplay style in a while now, and that should be considered a benefit.

On the other hand, it’s exactly like I said in my review: Sonic doesn’t need to be Mario. Mario is Mario. Sonic needs to define himself, not bite his rival’s style. Should Sonic be able to successfully fit in with a Super Mario 64 level? No more than Genesis Sonic would be fun in a Super Mario World level, I’d reckon (read: he wouldn’t, there’s not enough sloped surfaces).

Idk, I think if Sonic Adventure’s basic gameplay style was put in this, it’d fit just about as well. Also take note that while this stage has it’s flat areas, Mario 64 and Sunshine aren’t shy of using slopes where necessary, and this stage is no exception (at least in the case of sharp ones).

I think it’d be really fun with that gameplay, although possibly too easy to fall off every now and then.

You’re kind of missing my point, though. Sonic is a rollercoaster you can control. Think about rollercoasters, for a second. Once you climb the hill at the start, everything else is exclusively momentum-based. All of the hills, all of the loops, all of the corkscrews. It’s all momentum.

That’s Sonic. Except in a Sonic game, it’s this big huge multi-tiered rollercoaster and at any point you can stop, turn around, and explore the other tracks.

It doesn’t matter if a Mario game has slopes or not. The Super Mario World example was just the purest form of saying “These two gameplay types are mismatched.” Even if you put Sonic in the slope-iest New Super Mario Bros. stage, it’s like putting pickles in a peanut butter sandwich. Different tastes, different ideals, different goals. They are not interchangeable in any way shape or form.

Sonic is not Mario, Sonic should not be Mario. That’s missing the point as much or more than Sonic 4 did.

Do you think Rise of Lyric would have fared any better if it was not actually connected to Sonic in any way, shape or form? By that I mean, if say, the game was mostly the same, except instead of Robotnik, Sonic, Amy, Knuckles and Tails, it was jus a brand new IP with new characters in the same "style" fitting their role with similar dialogue and all that. Also replacing the Rings and the other "traditionally sonic things" and replacing them with similar not sonic things?

Well, I mean, ultimately, detaching the game from the Sonic franchise would have also theoretically detached it from the deadline of launching with the TV show. The game would’ve also likely launched on PS4 and Xbone instead of getting forcibly squeezed down to fit on the Wii U at the last second.

Those two things were the biggest hurdles Big Red Button faced while developing Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and they were hurdles imposed upon them by Sega.

Take Sonic, and by extension Sega, out of that equation and that game has a much better chance of getting an appropriate amount of love, care and polish.

So…. yes, definitely.

If you mean would the game have fared better if it was exactly the same in every single way (bugs, slop and all), just with different characters… then… no, probably not. As bad as the sales of Rise of Lyric were, at least it had the Sonic brand name on it. If BRB launched a sloppy, buggy 3D platformer on the Wii U with an unproven IP, then sales would’ve been way, way worse.

I’d say the Crash Bandicoot reboot probably fits in to this category. I remember playing a demo of that first one… Crash of the Titans, I think? And thinking it wasn’t so bad. Obviously, it must not have been, because they went ahead and made a sequel in Crash: Mind Over Mutant.

And then that franchise died. And has stayed dead. RIP in Peace.

At first I couldn’t figure out why Ross was reviewing a game like Battleforge. Normally he reviews off-kilter games, and something about this seemed kind of… generic?

But then the video review “ends” at around the 8-10 minute mark and keeps going for another almost 25 minutes as Ross notes the fact that you can’t really play Battleforge anymore because EA took the servers down, and uses this as a beach head to talk about doing this to games like this is effectively silently assassinating them.

My favorite part:

“99% of game companies that have shut down a server go with the final option: Go Fuck Yourself. This is my least favorite option, but game companies pick this one SO reliably. Like, ‘if you give a panhandler a whiskey bottle, will he take a sip?’ It’s that level of reliability. I wish Go Fuck Yourself wasn’t the industry standard for online games, but Go Fuck Yourself is so ingrained in the culture now. Like, sometimes it feels impolite, or naive to seriously suggest that we shouldn’t be fucked.”

If you’ve read my blog in the past, you know this is a subject I really hope more people continue to push back on this.

Takashi Iizuka just really liked the Chaotix. I remember an interview around the time the game came out where he said as much, and that they were “his characters” now or something, like he owned them.

I recall it seemed kind of rude, like he was disregarding their original creator by claiming them as his own work. Personally, I like the old Chaotix better (especially Vector).

New Vector is too short, wide, and beefy. I spent a couple of days throwing together a simple menu instead of having that dumb April Fools thing with the cheat codes.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m on about, this is a fangame I was working on from about 2009-ish. As I repeatedly say in the included material, I don’t know if I’ll ever finish it. But here’s a nice and tidy build that anyone can play and probably enjoy for the most part. It constitutes everything I’ve done on the game since 2009, and trust me, it’s not much.

It’s about 19mb and comes in two flavors:

FLAVOR 1: SonicForever_2015_Beta.7z

FLAVOR 2: SonicForever_2015_Beta_self-extracting-zip.exe

The second one is a self-extracting executable, just in case you don’t have 7zip installed for some reason.

I’ll probably go about spreading this around to other places later, right now I should probably get my clothes in the dryer and hop off to bed (yes, at 8:20pm, I have errands to run tomorrow and I am sleepy.)

I am avoiding Dragon Ball Super until the dub hits. I didn’t even
know it had started airing in Japan until last night when a friend
started talking about it to me.

And y’all just can’t avoid posting
tons and tons of screencaps so I’m probably going to know every single
thing that happens in this series before I ever officially watch it, so I
guess I’ll say right now: thanks for that, tumblr. And twitter. And the
internet in general.

Normally I’m pretty good at avoiding
spoilers for things I don’t want to know about but sometimes y’all get
SO EXCITED about something (like, say, the Final Boss from Super Mario
3D World) that even *I* can’t avoid it.

So, y’know… thanks in advance. :p

Still looking really good. I’m loving the old time-y heist feeling. It’s almost got kind of a Lupin quality to it. Like, the charming bandit.

Igor being the warden is interesting. He’s never really seemed like the antagonist before, has he? I don’t have much experience with Persona games besides Persona 4.

I mean, if nothing else, Igor seems like the one who sets you off to fight the big bad of the Persona games. So does that mean you’re actually working for the big bad in 5? I mean, that sounds like the sort of twist they’d do, given all of the SMT games are about getting friendly with evil demons.

But yeah, still looks great. Though I’m curious what, if any, differences between the PS4 and PS3 versions will be, or if the PS3 version will be canceled outright.

Well, I mean, like 95% of it is ripped assets. I know people have extracted levels and models out of Sonic 2006, and by now maybe even they’ve cracked the animation format.

I would assume all that would be left to do was to assemble it in the appropriate way – light scenes properly, and code everything so that it works the way that it should.

It’s actually not very hard if you’re comfortable enough with the software/creation end of things. Watch some gameplay footage in slow-mo and study when, where and why things happen.

That being said, it is definitely impressive just how exactly he nailed things. Most people don’t have an eye for detail like that.

I don’t even know where that information would come from. There’s big chunks of comics I’ve missed where things like that might have been explained, but without getting too deep in to spoiler territory, Super Sonic has Shadow’s ability for Chaos Control, which has basically become the ability to control time and maybe even reality itself (this is what I’m not sure about).

So I guess the idea is it doesn’t matter how strong or fast you are, because Super Sonic will always be one step ahead of every single move you could possibly make. He doesn’t have to be faster, because he can just freeze or even rewind time.

Where to jump in on Archie? Gosh. They publish archive collections that cover specific story arcs, but with the Ken Penders stuff and everything else I don’t know what state those are in anymore.

For the longest time, I told people to start at issue #224. That was, for a while, where the modern plot points really began in earnest, but again… Ken Penders had a lawsuit that erased like 40% of the active cast of the comics.

So, really, it might be better to start at #247. That is right at the tail end of a lot of stuff and it starts setting up the Mega Man crossover. The Mega Man Crossover segues directly into what we have today (which is actually currently leading in to the second Mega Man crossover). You’ll have a good 20-30 issues ahead of you, but they’re like 20 pages long each so it’s not really a big deal.

Sonic is on Comixology, and I think Archie has their own app, where you can buy and read comics, too. Of course, there’s also probably ways to read them elsewhere on the internet if you want to be a dirty thief. :P

I drew this for my niece during my stay in Nevada at my Brother's place. n the back, I wrote a short, simple apology for invading her bedroom during our stay (since that’s where it was decreed I’d sleep).

They’re of some of her pets. The focal point is obviously Twister, a tabby who strutted around the house like he owned the place. Tensions were high between him and their newest addition, a stray cat who answered to the name “Kitty.” Kitty and Twister occasionally got in to fights while we were there, but by the end of it, they were starting to act more friendly towards one another.

If you go back and look at the photos I posted, you’ll actually be able to spot these two. She also specifically asked if I knew how to draw guinea pigs – which, uh, no, I didn’t, really. Thankfully she had a coloring book laying around with some cartoon-y guinea pigs for me to at least get a basis to work from.

I really like the way it turned out! I colored with pencils I bought from the Dollar Store. And, since it's a physical drawing I gave to her, this is obviously just a photo I took of it before I left.

Final submission for this morning. Had to sit through some computer stuff recently, so I broke in a new drawing pad with these things. Problem is, the paper's too big for the scanner, so some of it ended up getting cut off. I could've fixed it by scanning the sheet of paper multiple times and stitching it all together, but... eh, effort.

Rude 'n' Tude and Professor Lab Rat are characters for a game idea I had once, and Parappa... well, I'm proud of what a dumb pun that is.

If you haven't watched it, you can see it here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0biOg…

I've had some requests for the neckbeard's shirt, or something similar.
Wow, I meant to post this ages ago when Two Best Friends Play were still doing Yakuza 4. Then I forgot about it! Primarily because 2014 has been a REALLY SUPER CRAZY BUSY YEAR FOR ME, HOLY CRAP. Mostly just doing videos for my Youtube channel! And launching a website! And opening a Redbubble store! And aaaahhhhh!

I got the idea for this in like, March, didn't draw it until May, and then it just kind of sat on my HDD at 90% complete until right now. I'm not even sure I like this picture anymore, it's been so long! But I still don't really have time to make it look any nicer!

New video, new chance to draw something, right? I even went so far to do (quick, sloppy) digital coloring on these.

I'm not entirely sure why Retro Studios picked an all-white version of DK to be representative of the Super Guide. He looks more gray in the game itself, making me think it's actually an old man, but here I was definitely going for a Super Saiyan vibe or whatever.

The video these pictures come from is over here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLh-d…

New video, new chance to draw something, right? I even went so far to do (quick, sloppy) digital coloring on these.

Look at me, getting in to rudimentary animation!
New video, new chance to draw something, right? I even went so far to do (quick, sloppy) digital coloring on these.

This was the first picture I actually drew. Took me forever to get DK's proportions right, and in the end I drew his eyes wrong and had to fix that when I colored them. The original pencil sketch of this also has a fur texture drawn on to the image itself because I didn't expect I was going to color them digitally. Getting the fur right in the final, colored image was really hard, too.

The video these pictures come from is over here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLh-d…

New video, new chance to draw something, right? I even went so far to do (quick, sloppy) digital coloring on these.

This was suppose to be a more detailed scene; the original pencil sketch had a vine or a tree root in front of DK that he stubbed his toe on. Given that the picture was on screen for maybe a full second, I didn't want any extra elements confusing what was going on.

The video these pictures come from is over here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLh-d…

So when I made a big, long, ridiculous, almost 30-minutes-long Game of the Year video for Youtube, I needed to talk about a Mario game on a platform I could not capture video from. So, I relied on artwork. Here's a selection of that.

I really don't like how the 3DS turned out. But I've never been good at rigid structures, I guess. So, I relied on artwork. Here's a selection of that.

I tried sketching both Mario and Wario before starting any of this, and I liked how Wario turned up in my warm-up sketches more than how he ended up here.
Out of the blue, somebody submitted a question to my tumblr ask box asking me to "plz draw bacon". I'm not entirely sure what they wanted, exactly, but I took this as an excuse to draw Bacon from Cucumber Quest.

Unfortunately, I don't think the creator of Cucumber Quest, Gigideegee, likes me very much (some of her friends have even blocked me on Twitter despite me basically never interacting with them), so I'm not sure she appreciates the gesture. But whatever, I drew this because it would be fun, not because I was trying to impress anybody.

This is the first picture I've inked and colored (by hand!) since March of last year, so that's something.

I probably should've alerted you guys to this (but I honestly forgot), but I ran a charity livestream about a week ago where me and a friend played through all of Sonic 2006 in a single sitting to see who could beat the game faster than the other. I won.

We didn't expect to get tons of money, so while we had "reward tiers" that went up to $600, we quickly ended up having to think of stuff for $700, $800, etc. Somebody in our Skype call said for $900 we'd all draw Sonic with a beard, for some reason (you had to be there).

It was said we’d all draw Sonic with a beard right then and there, but in the end only Brian Belida (Squiz) did his, and only partially.

Because everybody was going to draw theirs right then and there, I was excluded from the festivities but vowed I would draw it anyway. So here’s that. It started out as just a beard but then I got in to kind of a dwarf mode and gave him an axe. And then a little viking helmet. Then shoulderpads and a cape.

Inked by hand, colored by hand (with regular ol' Crayola Colored Pencils, as usual).

This was my April Fools day image for TSSZnews.com this year. The idea was that Sega and Telltale games had partnered together to create a Sonic game in the old LucasArts SCUMM engine (Day of the Tentacle, etc.), based on the Archie Comics series. The reason they went back to the old SCUMM engine was explained away as "We're riding the retro fad like Capcom did with Mega Man 9." I even went so far as to try and replicate Tracey Yardley's art style, but it didn't really come through once I shrunk it down for the sprite. Doesn't help that either I draw crookedly or my scanner scans crookedly, either.

I'd link to the story, but unfortunately my boss deleted all of our April Fools stories without telling us, and I didn't bother to save all of the dopey phony press release stuff. A friend came up with a great name for a Telltale employee I was "getting quotes from". She was called Stella and her full name was actually an anagram of "Telltale Games".

I even made up five bogus episode titles, which were, as I recall:

"A Blast From the Past"
"The Grass is Always Greener"
"The Secret of Angel Island"
"I Am The Eggman"
"Endgame"

The third episode was intended to be a riff on "The Secret of Monkey Island". The general idea I had was that the game would start with a recap of the Saturday Morning Cartoon and over the course of the season would update everything to be more in line with what the story is like in Archie Comics today. Of course, in my bogus story I went so far as to say Sega and Telltale were already talking about Season 2 for this series and were even in talks to Adventure-Game-ize other Sega properties, most notably Shenmue.

You know what's great? The fact that April Fools essentially lets me write stupid fanfiction like this and not feel like a huge tool for doing so.

I wrote a big ol' blog about other game hoaxes I've done over the years, if you're interested in reading:

[link]

It has been forever since I inked anything by hand. I think the inking pens I used on this are actually like two or three years old and this is the first time I've ever actually done anything with them.

With all this talk of "Project Needlemouse" and a new Sonic game on the horizon, I couldn't help but draw the blue guy again. It makes me feel guilty to draw him, because I drew him SO MUCH growing up and that seriously makes up like 80% of my gallery here.

But whatever. Rather than go for my regular "style" I actually looked at official classic Sonic artwork and tried to ape that a little bit. I doubt you can tell.

Regular printer paper, drawn with a mechanical pencil, inked with "STAEDTLER" pigment liner, colored with regular ol' Crayola Colored Pencils.

These are screen captures from a video I submitted to a Gametrailers video contest. The idea of the contest was to create something scary and videogame related. I chose a motion comic, because that would be quick and easy to do (you only had 2 or 3 weeks). The video itself can be seen here:

[link]

The grand prize was $500. I didn't win, but they ended up giving me $50 anyway (even though there was no $50 runner-up prize to begin with).

I thought about submitting it here but knowing how strict DeviantArt is with "theft", I'd probably get in trouble for using sounds and music from Half-Life and Left4Dead.

This "motion comic" got me to draw more than I probably have in years. Getting the idea and storyboarding it out took a while and in the end I had to sit down and draw 12-18 hours a day for three days solid to get all the art done. It took another four or five days to get it in to Sony Vegas and "animate" it.

The pacing is kind of crap in the video itself, but I worked right up to the deadline, basically. There was nothing I could do to improve the pacing short of ripping everything out and starting over, and I didn't have time for that.

Original Storyboard

Character Sheet

High-Res Artwork

A little over 24 hours of work for this one.

I've been meaning, just out of curiosity, to try and make a "High-Def Game Screenshot" for a while now. I even started experimenting with something like this related to Shantae, but when the downloadable Rocket Knight game was announced, I seized my chance.

Sparkster himself and the wolf enemy were drawn by hand (while looking at a sprite sheet), scanned, and then colored with vectors.

The crystals are 3D models that I made in Milkshape 3D.

For the background, I took a few screenshots of the SNES Sparkster game and then traced over specific tiles with vectors. It was mainly to get the tile-size right, so none of what I traced is 1:1.

Some of it's kind of sloppy, but... I don't usually do videogame tiles, especially at this resolution.

For my Halloween webcast this year. Featured audio AND video (separately, of course)

And it was a total bust. Last year, I think I topped out at around 65-70 listeners total, and this year I managed a paltry 18 listeners. I think I had a single viewer on the video stream. It was a real, real downer.

This was artwork I did for an "animated" bumper for the video stream. Maybe I'll see if DeviantArt will let me upload the bumper; apparently they're very restrictive on what videos they let up on the site.

This was a mascot design I entered in GameFunk Mascot Design contest. Dunno how much more inspired it is than what they chose, but the winner certainly is pretty generic as far as I'm concerned. I mean, that was one of the first things that popped in to my head when somebody says "funk", though that's probably what they were looking for. When they announced the deadline was extended from March 21st to March 31st and said you could do more than one entry, I drew something very similar to the winning picture and judging by the comments on their blog I was not the only one.

[link]

They said they wanted something marketable, so I went for the cute mascot. I mean, c'mon. Doesn't Funky Monkey just scream "You want a cute plushie of me to hug"? Currently, Funky is competing for the runner-up prize of $50. Vote for me, if you want:

[link]

Grand Prize is a $3,099 Alienware XPS PC. It'd be totally awesome if you'd vote for me.

This is the longest I've ever spent coloring any one picture. I worked on it for over a week solid. Generally, from sketch to completion, most pictures take me 8 hours on average.

This probably was closer to 20-30 hours.

For an earlier design of The Graveyard Shift website. The idea was that the entire website would be done in flash.

I've only just started learning flash, so rather than half-ass it I decided to scale it back a little bit. The end result is much cleaner, though I'm a bit dissapointed I didn't use this guy. I didn't even do any lineart, first - something that's kind of out of character for me.

I'm surprised. This doesn't even look like something I drew. Just a few weeks ago I was discussing with some friends about how worthless I think gory slasher movies are. And then I go and draw this. I wasn't even very proud of it until I threw some filters on it. The blood in particular was only supposed to be a little splatter on his mask that grew out of control. This was the first time I colored something in the freeware image editing software, Paint.NET.

Floating around in the back of my mind sometimes is the idea of remaking an old Quake 1 mod that I thought sounded cool. It was called "The Horror" - also known as "Horror Show". The concept was simple: One player was chosen at the beginning of a map to be a chainsaw wielding maniac with tons of HP; everybody else in the map was a survivor and had to face off against the maniac, just like a classic horror movie.

I like that sort of idea. I think that, if worked on enough, it could be really fun to play. What if it was more than just a chainsaw wielding maniac? What if there were different classes of monsters, each with specific strengths and weaknesses?

Too bad I can't model. Or map. Or code.

Or have the patience to learn any of the above. Hm.

Presenting "Chip Hardcheese in the Second Dimension".

Everything you see here is 100% original sprites, folks. Nothing ripped or edited from any other source. You're actually looking at nearly a solid week's worth of work. The big guy with the gun took twelve hours of work alone and he doesn't even animate.

In actuality, this is for a mock-up game I'm creating for a video I'm producing. With any luck, the video will help me get a new PC.

My mind is already constructing possibilities of this as a real game. The storyline, the level premises... etc. But doing everything in this way is really, really hard work. I'm so used to working with pre-animated sprites and everything; this is a major wake-up call.

Then again, having the sprites to do the projects I want to do has always been the major stopping point for me. All the projects I've done that are the closest to being completed are generally the ones where sprites are easy to come by.

But, really, who knows.

If you care, those are Pirate Ninja Zombies, there, with the big guy being the King Pirate Ninja Zombie.

...

Whenever I type "King Pirate Ninja Zombie" it really just feels like I'm throwing random words together.

ALSO SHUT UP ABOUT HIS BLASTER I KNOW, IT'S A HOMAGE HOLY CRAP

Solid Snack is a parody of Solid Snake.
So, here I am again. Like I took a stab at drawing Silver (then, self-named "Horny the Hedgehog"), I am taking a stab at drawing the latest character to appear in Sonic 2k6, and I'm naming him Amethyst for the time being.

As usual, this is probably waaaaay off model, but there aren't any clear, close-up shots of him.

This was a quickie. Took about 20 minutes for the sketch. I didn't ink it, and it took a little over an hour and a half (ish) to color.

Hardcore Gamer Magazine's monthly fanart thing might actually force me to sit down and finish an entire picture once a month. GASP! This is what I'm entering for July; No idea if it'll show up in the magazine itself, but at least I get 100pts for entering - which I can then use to buy stuff from their store! It's almost like drawing to earn real money.

Had the sketch for this laying around for almost two weeks (I drew it like, July 2nd), only just now got around to coloring it. Took me the better part of... five hours? six? to color it. Of course, I also goofed around quite a bit in between coloring to give myself a break.

Turned out fairly nice!

For the unaware: This is Silver the Hedgehog, from the next-gen Sonic game. Since we now know his official colors, I have colored him with them.
I was THIS CLOSE to sending this to scraps.

This is one of those things that started out as some useless little doodle but ended up looking halfway decent once I was done with it. I did it while listening to Chrono Symphonic, a lovely site that's orchestrated select pieces of Chrono Trigger music as if were the soundtrack to a feature-length motion picture. Quite a lot of the music is simply lovely.

Music is such a great motivational tool. I should use it more often.

Somebody told me that, today, Knuckles was 12 years old. I didn't bother to fact-check because I'm lazy and besides, it's an excuse to draw an oekaki. I got kind of bored around the time I started to color it, so if the coloring looks a bit lazy.... it is.

"Shouldn't that be fearless? Uh-oh."

A bit 'o Bubsy fanart, drawn for a secret reason that honestly few people know about, and even fewer could guess if they didn't already know. Recent things have come to light in this secret thing that make me rather dissapointed, which should be all those who are "in the know" would need to know to understand what I might be getting at.

Shadow of Chaos is a parody fangame I'm doing that openly mocks the upcoming PS2/Xbox/Gamecube game, Shadow the Hedgehog. In it, Shadow learns Sega is creating the game, Shadow the Hedgehog without his permission and sets off (riding a red Vespa) to discover all sorts of strange oddities are at hand; including zombies, a clone army, and at the heart of it all - the man himself, Yuji Naka.

The line of text here is from one of my favorite movies of all time, Army of Darkness. It's a horror/comedy/fantasy, and the third movie in the Evil Dead Trilogy. It's absolutely cheesy as hell (and plays to that factor quite well) and I love every minute of it.

Always a joke I like to toss around, this was spurred by the recent Shadow the Hedgehog videos and discussion thereof in #srb2. The joke, if you need it explained to you, is generally because Knuckles' new voice actor in the Sonic games voices Yugi in Yu-Gi-Oh.

Dissecting a Hedgehog

DeviantArt does not give you enough room to write titles. The full title is:

Dissecting a Hedgehog: An In-Depth Analysis of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Before MarioWeen exploded in popularity, this was my primary claim to fame. It was printed in the magazine The Gamer's Quarter, something anybody who has an unhealthy obsession with videogames should be reading. It was printed in the first issue. I was actually offered a permanent position on their staff, but I don't consider myself intelligent enough to really maintain writing articles like this.

This article takes almost every ounce of practical knowledge of the Sonic series and spills it everywhere. It took no less than six months to write, and even now, I don't feel as though I said everything I had wanted to say. I cut off a bit at the end an wrapped up an ending for the magazine deadline, but it was mainly self-indulged egotism, something I'm not prone to do - and it embarassed me. So, off it went.

The Gamer's Quarter has been featured on SlashDot, Chatterbox Videogame Radio, and everything inbetween - including MTV news. And, it seems, in almost every one of these, my article is among the ones they would mention (not to toot my own horn, of course)

Be careful. It's a long one. This bad boy clocks in at a whopping Ten Pages. It was, I believe, one of the biggest articles in the first issue. It's going to take awhile to read, and hopefully, when you're done, you'll be wiser for it. Trust me, it's good for you.

Me and Ice Dragon team up once again for a picture. He's lucky we're good friends. Normally I charge money for this. If people still want to pay me money for these things, hey, I'm not going to argue with them.

So. These are his (original) characters from something he's been working on - although he's talked about using these characters in Rising Stars of Manga, so I don't think I can reveal anything about who they are. I'm also submitting this at full resolution! So, you 56kers, I apologize for the pain you are experiencing. Stuff to know:

- Ice said he used a combination of Flash, Streamline, and Photoshop to digitally ink this picture
- I used Paintshop Pro 7 to color it. It's about 28 layers.
- Took me about three days total to color, at about 3-4 hours per day.

My name is Ryan Bloom. I was born on July 6th, 1983, in Denver, Colorado. I did not know my father growing up as he was somewhat abusive towards my mother. I have a brother, who is a whopping 14 years older than I am - making him nearly old enough to be my dad. In the absence of my real father, my brother has infact taken care of me much in the way a father would, and I am sure he does not realize how thankful I am for that, even if we don't talk as much as we should anymore.

Videogames are pretty much it for me; they have been a part of my life litterally ever since I can remember us having an Atari 2600 when I was 3 years old. I would very much like to break into just about any sector of the videogame industry; most notably something involving game design, art, or even game journalism. It is my dream job. As of now, I made "fangames" (also known as "doujin games") released for free on the internet. My biggest claim to fame in this sector is a fangame known as "Super Mario: Blue Twilight DX". As far as gaming journalism goes, I write a lot of reviews and submit them to websites that allow public user reviews, but I have been printed in a magazine known as The Gamer's Quarter for my article, "Dissecting a Hedgehog: An In-Depth Analysis of Sonic the Hedgehog", in which I basically go nuts with my Sonic fanboy-ism and describe over a series of ten pages why the series was successful in the past and why the series in the present seems to be missing the magic that made the Sonic series so amazing in 1991. I have also won fanart contests, most notably I got "HGM Fanart Pick" in Hardcore Gamer Magazine in Issue #7 (February 2006).

I am a typical overweight basement dwelling Geek. I dropped out of Highschool in 2001 after depressingly flunking my Freshman, Sophmore, and Junior years for reasons I still do not understand to this date. My Mom thinks I suffered some sort of trauma in middle school, which was pretty rough for me (The friends I had during that period of my life were awful people; I was the punching bag of the group and I was too much of a loser to stand up and tell them to stop until Highschool), but I figure I probably just have a learning disorder; I seem to learn better via hands-on training than I do reading from text books. Always planning to get my GED, I never have - always postponed to "next weekend" or "next month" for various reasons, most beyond my control. After five years of postponning, I fear I have forgotten too much from Highschool to pass, even though I took my pre-GED directly after I dropped out and learned I scored high enough to pass.

(Edit 04/11/06: Now with more whoring!)

So. I wanted to draw... something. This started out as a person running. Then I erased the legs and "saw" (on a stick figure) somebody holding a sword and a shield, so I went for that. That morphed and became Link from Zelda, but then I drew breasts on it and the whole thing just kind of fell appart, so I decided some random elf girl.

So! Here we are.

It might be hard to see the "forest", the scanner didn't pick much of it up... I drew it really lightly.
