I had a fabulous beauty shoot recently with my friend who just happens to be a great photographer, Marvin Joseph. I have known Marvin for 16 years!! We go way back to my college days at Howard University. He has been there photographing some significant moments in my life including my wedding, my kids and my early foray into the world of makeup. We have worked together many times, so I was excited to collab with him again on this beauty shoot with beautiful Brianna. My goal with this shoot was to capture some really tight beauty shots using color. I particularly wanted to focus on the lips because I had several new lipsticks from MAC (thanks to their Back 2 MAC program) that I couldn’t wait to use. I kept the eyes soft on Brianna and popped the lips with Dare You (first pic), a gorgeous deep brown red with cremesheen, and Morange (second pic), a bright orange which I toned down by mixing it with Jazzed, a cremesheen coral, which unfortunately is discontinued. Sophisticate’s Black Hair

One of the reasons I enjoy being a makeup artist is because of the other talented, fabulous professionals I get to meet and work with. A few months ago, I got the opportunity to work with natural hair care stylist extraordinaire, Angela Walker of N Natural Hair Studio in Silver Spring, MD. Angela is an amazing stylist, (you must check her out) so it truly was a privilege to see her in action. We worked together on a photo shoot shot by Keston Duke, and I learned recently that some of the pics were featured in Sophisticate’s Black Hair November issue. Special thanks to Angela for hiring for the job.

Master Class with Billy B

There are many makeup artists whose work I really like and Billy B is one of them. I had the pleasure of meeting him some years ago when I took a class he was teaching in New York through the Powder Group. He also asked me to be his model for a red carpet look demonstration. To say I was psyched to have him BEAT my face would be an understatement. This was one time where I wanted to break all the rules and sleep in my makeup! LOL! But I reluctantly washed it off when I got home that night. I learned a lot from him during the class and enjoy following his work. So check out his latest colorful eyeshadow tutorial on Beautylish.

Clean Beauty Inspiration for Fall

Enjoyed an article I read recently on Beautylish about clean beauty looks for fall. And the pictures that accompanied it were great inspiration. Clean beauty isn’t to be mistaken for the no-makeup makeup look. The writer describes it well:

“…clean beauty is all about precision and definition in the right places, enhancing whatever natural beauty someone has, and them some.”

Champagne at Sunset for St. Jude

I will be sipping for a cause and dining for charity tonight and Wednesday to help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in finding new treatments for childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

The “Champagne at Sunset” event and fundraiser will be on the rooftop of the W Hotel, 515 15th St. NW, Washington, DC from 6:00-9:00pm. There will be live entertainment, open bar, appetizers by Jean-Georges, sushi bar, and an exclusive art exhibition by Len DePas. You can also bid on silent auction items from celebrities such as Adam Levine, Lady Gaga, Paula Deen, Chef Thomas Keller, Katy Perry and Dave Matthews to name a few. And on Wednesday, Sept. 19th, J&G Steakhouse will host a private dinner from 6:00-9:00pm with guest celebrity Chef Christophe Eme, the youngest French Chef to be awarded Two Michelin Stars. He also appeared on Iron Chef America. The dinner will be an intimate six course French dining experience with select wine pairings.

Nicole Miller Bridal Trunk Show

I had the pleasure of hanging out with the lovely ladies at Nicole Miller in Tyson’s Galleria for their bridal trunk show over the weekend which featured dresses from the designer’s 2013 spring collection. The show also debuted the bridal veil collection (reminiscent of 1940s Hollywood glamor with simple lines, Grecian detailing and embellishments) which isn’t yet available in stores.

I’m absolutely loving the dresses from this collection. They’re form-flattering, romantic, chic and classic. And the eye-catching backs will definitely have any bride turning heads.
