I get giddy when clients ask me to review any products that involve reading. I am a public school educator and have been teaching reading for the past seven years. Before that, I homeschooled my own children for thirteen years. The greatest blessing was teaching my own children to read. If you are using the Reading Eggs workbook alongside the online program, they suggest completing the online lessons first before working through the corresponding workbook pages. However, if you are a strong teacher with a phonetic background, I think your child could get by with just using the workbook. The workbook covers 60 lessons. The workbook consists of 250 pages with certificates. Each lesson has 4 pages to reinforce learning. There are reviews and quizzes built into the workbook. I’m a strong believer that reading and writing need to work simultaneously. The workbook allows the student to write during the lessons.

My kids used to think playdoh mats were the coolest! I love to create them, too. It keeps toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten learners busy with fine motor skills and helps them with recognizing different facial expressions.

It’s not always easy to teach this concept of different social-emotional skills, so many moons ago, I thought it might be beneficial for my children to express their feelings through hands on play with these free emotions play dough mats. It really was a game changer for my own children when they were learning about their different emotions.

One of our favorite things to do as a family is to have a family game night or a family game weekend. We all get giddy going to the local game store that sells games that are not as popular as the games you can get at Walmart. I’ve already decided when I grow up I want to work at a game store.

We own and actually play all of these games. Some are oldies but goodies. The one game that we introduce to all of our friends is Five Crowns. It’s a card game that can be played with 2 players and up to 7 players. You can actually play with 2 games and play with 14 players.

The latest game we played is Munchkin Disney that is based on the original Munchkin game. Munchkin is a hilarious card game in which players compete to fight monsters, grab the loot and gain enough experience to reach level 10. Initially, all player’s characters begin at level one and must ‘kick down the door’ in a dungeon by drawing a card. Should a player encounter a monster, then they must be able to beat that monster’s level using whatever magic items or spells they have. This edition uses Disney characters.

Even though my gang adores Monopoly, I refuse to play. I detest that game. We have several different Monopoly games that they play without me.

What is independent reading?

Independent reading is where students are encouraged to choose their own reading material (fiction books, non-fiction, magazine, other media) for their pure enjoyment. This is an essential component in my opinion in building reading literacy. It allows students to be exposed to various topics of choice and increases fluency rates, vocabulary and various reading skills. There are a gazillion benefits of independent reading. But independent reading doesn’t happen by chance. Teachers must be intentional. You need to be a resource to your students. This means exposing them to different genres and topics.

(So, stay with me and read to the end if you are want to make your students engaged and lifelong learners).

One of the most frustrating tasks as an English Language Arts Reading teacher is holding your students accountable for their independent reading during class and at home. Our goal is the classroom is to simply make independent reading time a habit , not a dreaded task. Always start building up reading stamina on the first day of school. It’s never too late to start building up reading stamina. I found that it is more beneficial to have a wide variety of books for student choice than having a huge library filled with just fiction. In my opinion, less is best. If you ask you school librarian for some suggestions, I guarantee she will be thrilled to loan you some interesting books even for struggling readers that will build reading comprehension skills.  if I take a sincere interest in their reading book selection or genre they are more opt to actually take advantage of their independent reading time. I’m always looking for creative ideas on what to use instead of basic reading logs for my students to reflect on their reading achievement.

What does independent reading look like?

It looks different in every classroom, in fact, in each class. You need to

I like to hold conferences every week with my students about their independent reading choices. We talk about reading genres and I always have them make inferences about what might happen. I found they look forward to sharing their book choice with me. It’s usually only a 1-2 minute conference unless they choose to enlighten me more on their elective reading choice.

Book Group Talks

This is one of my favorite approaches with my students. I like to have two or three students share what they read to their peers in front of the classroom. I ask reading element questions and always require them to make inferences. I also love for them to rate the book on a scale of 1-5. This piques other student’s interest in the book. In fact, it’s not uncommon for all the children in their groups to start reading the same book. This works well with online reading books, such as Epic. It also encourages students to broaden their personal interests.

Passing out these independent reading log accountability sheets on Monday works well with my 4, 5, and 6-grade ELAR classes. I require them to clear their entire desk except for their reading book. They are not allowed to fill out their log during the independent reading time. Once the timer goes off, they can start filling out their reading log for that particular day. I go around the room and mark 25 points on their log for each completed day. I require my students to turn in their log for a maximum of 100 points towards a daily grade on Friday. This is an easy grade for them if they comply.

Create a Reading Dialogue with Student

I often create a dialogue with my students either on google classroom or through their reading journals. I asked them questions pertaining to the characters, settings, and other reading elements. Often they love answering questions about how they can personally relate to their favorite character in their book. I grade their journals, so if they don’t answer my question, their journal will be incomplete. This allows you to scaffold different concepts throughout the year.

Buddy Reading

It’s fun for the students to pair up with a partner. I have assigned partners and also have allowed the children to pick their own partners, both seem to work well. The partners love to read to one another. The buddy reading works best when the students are on the same reading grade levels. I have a tendency to hold buddy partner conferences to make sure they are on track.

It takes time to build the desired independent reading allotted time in your classroom. The key is to stay consistent. After a month, your students should be trained to read their reading books independently without a gazillion issues. Don’t give up!

Another tip to keep independent reading a priority is to always start your class with independent reading before direct instruction. I’ve tried all different times, and this is the only way I can stay consistent.

Dayspring Christian Academy goal is to teach students the true history of the Pilgrims from original sources through the Principle Approach method of education. I used this exact approach when I homeschooled my own children.

Each lesson begins with a short review of the previous lesson and ends with a short quiz. The lessons are about 30 minutes give or take. It is recommended that a student only completes one lesson per day. Students are encouraged to print the note taking document and take notes while listening to the powerpoint presentation. This is such an important skill that a lot of homeschool students overlook for various reasons. I appreciated how the narrator underlined the important key words to help the student to decipher important vocabulary.

Lessons may include vocabulary, time-lines, quotes, mapping, scripture, latin roots, stem activities and reasoning questions. At the end of each lesson, the author includes suggested reading resources and enrichment activities.  In some lessons, the author encourages the student to compare different versions of scripture. It’s one of my favorite parts of this curriculum.

The Pilgrim Story will not be suitable for a non-Christian. The Pilgrim Story bases all lessons on the concept that God is in charge of all men, not human leaders. I believe that this concept is going to have to be explained in greater depth as a parent. Unfortunately, this concept is not readily practiced in today’s government.

I review and create a lot of curriculum, and The Pilgrim Story is amazing to me. I certainly wished I had this curriculum when I homeschooled my own children. It can be used individually or as a family setting. For older children, I would just assign additional research or writing assignments to go along with each lesson. It’s a very user-friendly and can easily be adaptable for all ages.

It’s estimated that around 5.6 million children have anxiety, with many of them not being diagnosed. The causes of anxiety in children can stem from a variety of factors, including genetics, family environment, school stress, and life changes.

Fortunately, there are many things parents and guardians can do to help their children with anxiety. In addition to a certificate in child development behavior and mental health, there are other ways to help children with anxiety to help improve their overall well-being.

Encourage Open Communication

Creating an environment where your child feels comfortable talking to you about their feelings and concerns can help them manage their anxiety. Encourage them to share how they feel and be a supportive, non-judgmental listener. Reassure your child that it’s okay to express their feelings and explain that it is normal for everyone to experience anxiety and worry.

Teach Coping Strategies

Help your child learn effective and healthy coping strategies, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, positive self-talk, and journaling. These activities can help them feel centered and reduce the physical symptoms associated with anxiety. You may want to consider enlisting the help of a mental health professional who can help teach your child specific techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing.

Other coping skills include:

• Making lists
• Talking to a trusted adult
• Practicing self-care
• Engaging in physical activity or exercise

Develop Routines and Structures

Setting routines and providing structure can help children feel safe and secure. This reduces the feeling of uncertainty that can worsen anxiety. Make sure to include regular sleep times, meal times and time for relaxing activities into your daily routine.

Routines are vital to helping children feel better about their anxiety, especially if they are struggling with a difficult home life. As a teacher or foster parent, ensure that your routines aren’t too rigid, and schedule a time for relaxation.

Studies also show that scheduling a “worry time” can help contain your worrying thoughts to a healthy amount.

Encourage Positive Thinking

Anxious thoughts can spiral out of control, making it difficult to focus on the present or envision a positive future. Help teach your child how to recognize those anxious thoughts and replace them with more positive statements. Stay away from language that could be interpreted as negative or critical, even if your child is struggling in school or at home.

Some common phrases that could be doing more harm than good include, “You should be able to do this,” or, “Why can’t you just try harder?” Instead, use phrases such as, “It’s okay if this is difficult for you,” or, “Let’s work together and figure out a solution.”

Don’t Run Away From Triggers

Encourage your child to face their fears instead of running away from them. Develop a plan with your child for how they will handle triggers and situations that make them feel anxious. Share the steps you can take together to make the experience easier, such as role-playing or problem-solving scenarios with them.

This helps children understand that it’s not only possible to manage their anxiety but also to find ways to cope with triggers. The worst thing you can do for anxiety is to continue to ignore triggers. Doing so only reinforces the anxiety and can set your child back.

Be Patient and Supportive

Above all, be patient and supportive of your child’s struggles with anxiety. Remind them that they are not alone in this and that you are there for them. Offer reassurance and understanding as they work through the process of managing their anxiety.

It may take time for your child to learn how to manage their anxiety, but with the right tools and help from trusted adults, they can move forward in a healthier direction.

December can be a very busy month for all of us. So, as the new year approaches, I have created a fun way for your children to create and keep their New Year’s resolutions.

Magnets Can Help Children Keep Resolutions

On New Year’s Eve, my kids and I like to reflect on our New Year resolutions for the past year. More often than not, our resolutions did not last much beyond January. This happens because it is easy to forget about our resolutions and fall back on old habits. Well, this year, I came up with the idea of making New Year’s Resolution Magnets that we can stick on the fridge to help us not forget the resolutions we made.

Materials

These high-quality do-it-yourself magnets are so easy to make. All you need is a little inspiration, creativity, and imagination, as well as the following supplies:

• White or colored paper – I recommend card stock
• Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
• Glitter and/or other decorative materials for added creativity
• Scissors
• Glue
• Ruler
• Magnets

Most of these supplies are easily available at your local dollar store, and the magnets are available on Amazon in multiple sizes and shapes. I like to use the adhesive 4×6 inch flexible magnets as they provide plenty of space to decorate and write our New Year’s resolutions. These magnets can also be used to display your favorite photos from the past year, which make great gift ideas.

Step 1: Write down your resolution

While helping your children come up with practical and meaningful resolutions, simply use the free pdf file that I have created for you for them to write them on below.

Step 2: Color in the images

Step 3: Cut out the resolution

Once they have a resolution and have decorated the card, simply cut it out.

Step 4: Place it on the magnet

Next, have them stick the resolution card onto the magnet.

How to Explain New Year’s Resolutions to Children

New Year’s Resolutions may appear like a foreign language and could be lost on younger children. Therefore, it may be recommended that you introduce the concept to children around 8 years old. Grab this FREE New Years Activity Pack for Families.

The best way to help your child see the importance of making a meaningful resolution is to make it a family activity. A good time to do this is during Christmas break; and, if you have a fireplace, it may be fun to sit by the hearth and discuss the past year. Start the conversation by talking about the past year’s accomplishments and try to identify any areas of potential growth.

You can use an opening statement such as “Tonight we are going to reflect on the past year, and each of us is going to comment on a few things that we want to continue to do and those that we want to change that make us feel good about ourselves.” Give each family member time to share what they are proud of and something they want to improve.

To help your children understand how to make a good resolution for themselves, it may be a good idea to make a family resolution first. Five suggested family-friendly resolutions may include:

1. Going for a walk every night after dinner – this is a great time to walk your fur babies
2. Start a family game night
3. Start a family movie night rotating who chooses the movie
4. Exercise together
5. Find a volunteer opportunity where everyone can contribute

After you decide on one or two good family resolutions, help your child think about what resolution(s) they may want to make for themselves. Keep in mind that different resolutions may benefit children at different stages of life and that the resolution should be practical and achievable. Ask your kids what is important to them and what goals they want to accomplish in the coming year. This makes the resolution more meaningful for your child when he achieves it.

Once you and your children have developed and written down your resolutions, I suggest that you have them on display for all to see, such as the refrigerator magnets. For day-specific resolutions, such as family game nights, it is a good idea to write each resolution on the specific day of the week on a monthly wall calendar so that you commit to that resolution.

Look for my annual printable monthly calendar to track your resolutions. My owl calendar is a calendar template saved as a pdf document with one page per month. These calendars make great gifts and are a great way to track major holidays, important dates, and New Year’s resolutions.

Also, don’t forget to be a role model for your children by following through on your own resolutions.

2. Eat healthily – add more fruits and vegetables to your diet
3. Exercise – again, get outdoors
4. Read – escape into a good book
5. Do chores – keep your room clean
6. Be good to others
7. Save money
8. Do well in school – increase your grades in at least one class
9. Make new friends and work on hospitality
10. Learn something new
