Summer Savings Week with Community Ed

Summer is almost here! To celebrate, Rockwood Community Education is offering a week of savings on summer programs May 6-10, 2013. Each day, two different camps, clinics or classes will be offered at a reduced price for one day only.

The deals will begin at 9 a.m. and will be available until 10 p.m. each day. Be sure to visit the Community Education website each day to take advantage of these special savings.

St. Louis County Library Summer Reading Program

DESE Parent Survey: Services for Special Education

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is gathering information from parents who have a child(ren) who receives special education services.

Below is a link to a copy of the survey with two options for submission: online or mail. This survey is confidential; individual responses are not shared with the school district or anyone else.

All surveys should be completed by May 10, 2013.

Congratulations to the 4th and 5th graders who participated in the MCTM Elementary Mathematics Regional Contest held at LaSalle on April 13th: Maxine Hasler, Caleb Fitzpatrick, Kylie Floyd, Gwendolyn Fritts, Garrett Blum, Bryenna Walker, Julia Collins, Wesley Gernstetter, and Nolan Deane. Prop S Provides Funds for Eureka School Community

Rockwood has a $38.4 million no-tax increase bond issue on the ballot. The bond issue is titled Proposition S.

At Eureka High School, the bond issue would provide funds for the renovation of locker rooms and a security wall would be constructed for the gym-to-field area. At Eureka Elementary, the kitchen facilities would be renovated to allow the school to address child nutrition needs and better manage lunch shifts.

Pennies for Patients

Our Student Leadership Council sponsored a drive that benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They collected spare change and are proud to announce that they raised $849.04, surpassing last years amount of $692.81. Congrats to Mrs. Ruoff's 4th Grade who collected $122 and won a Pizza Party!

Prop S: What Does It Mean For Our School?

On Tuesday, April 2, Rockwood residents will be asked to vote on Prop S, a $38.4 million no-tax rate increase bond issue.

The proposed bond issue supports students by focusing on safety measures, technology improvements and updates to our current facilities.

· Safety: Provide for safety modifications, such as security cameras, door-locking systems and check-in centers at school entrances.

· Technology: Update computers and networks so students are prepared for upcoming state-mandated online assessments.

· School Improvements: Repair and renovate existing schools to maintain the district’s investment in facilities and buildings.

This referendum would not require an increase to the district’s current debt service tax rate. A four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority is necessary for passage. Election Day is April 2. Please remember to vote.

Students Celebrate Literacy

Jeff Engle’s fourth-grade class at Blevins Elementary School celebrated Rockwood Reading Week by collaborating with preschool students in Emily Nichols and Cathy Simpson’s class at Vandover Early Childhood.

For this activity, preschool students learned about story elements and created props and scenery based on The Three Little Pigs. Students had the opportunity to visit Rockwood Summit to tour its theatre and gain additional background knowledge in this area. Following this, they retold their stories and performed their rendition of The Three Little Pigs for Engle’s fourth-grade class via Lync, a videoconferencing program. Engle’s class followed this up by performing Barnyard Song for the class.

This literacy exchange was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore literature with fellow Rockwood students. Kylie Ghormley, a student in Engle's class, shared her thoughts on the activity. "I had a lot of fun doing this activity with the preschoolers," she said. "I loved performing reader’s theater for them. I am sure they had a lot of fun too. It was a good experience!" Classmate Ashtyn Kauffman added, "I thought the preschool students spoke loud and clear and that their costumes were lovely. I would love to watch them 1,000 times a day!”

Science Day is Electric

Blevins Elementary was full of excitement as students experienced hands-on science activities. All grades took part in learning today, and Kendra Sweeney’s fifth-grade class experienced the power of electricity through circuit board fabrication.

"Education is very important to our students and having the ability to learn by doing is a great opportunity for growth", said Sweeney.

Getting ready to start middle school, but not sure what to expect?

Join us this summer for the Welcome to Middle School program, where you’ll have the chance to experience what life will be like over the next three years! Visit the different areas of a middle school building while learning about the daily schedule, time management techniques, extra-curricular opportunities, lockers and more. Each day covers a new topic and provides students with valuable information to make a successful transition to middle school. Taught by certified Rockwood teachers.
