The pockets create insulation and are the secret to the shade’s energy efficiency and ability to hold room temperature steady.

Honeycomb blinds are probably the most energy efficient blinds to be had. They insulate in a way similar to the way a jacket insulates your body in the cold outdoors. I think of them as “putting a jacket on my cold windows.”

Cellular Shades, Honeycomb, Blinds, Window Treatments, Window Covering, Blinds To Go

These Side Track Cellular shades may be just what you need to seal off energy leaks along the sides of your windows if you live in a really cold climate. They achieve an amazing 65% reduction in energy loss! Think of how much that can lower your energy bill!

I’m also impressed by these vertical honeycombs. In the past, verticals didn’t provide all that much insulation. But with these, you get a huge boost in energy conservation, plus great looks … and with minimal stacking space.

Now the shade is finished and – Oh, my, is it ever starting to look good! But it isn’t finished yet. It needs to be turned, the board attached on top, the rings need to be attached, and the cords need to be inserted.

To get all that started, the shade must first be turned. There’s a technique to turning it, watch carefully how Terrell does it. Do turn it gently or you might displace the lining and secret structure.

Once again, the shade is laid out on the table, but this time with the right side out. It is carefully measured – but Terrell has figured out a quick and foolproof way to do this that always comes out right. I am loving the way she’s doing it. My first Roman shade was a disaster because of this very problem. I followed the directions in the book, but things did not come out even. I hate it when that happens.

Turns out that’s a common problem. But Terrell has figured out a way around it – that completely avoids the problem of the rings and lift cords not matching up. How I wish I knew this earlier!

Terrell then strings the cord through. It’s super-easy the way she does it! (Again, how I wish I saw this a few years ago when I was making my ill-fated first roman shade. I must have re-read the instructions a hundred times and they totally confused me! And then my cords tangled – what a mess it was!) You won’t have any of those problems if you do it this way.

If you’re planning on going through all the videos in the series before starting, that’s smart. That way, you’ll have a better idea of what fabric and materials to buy, how much to buy, any other supplies that you’ll need and approximately how much time you’ll need to delegate to the task.

Sewing Roman shades is fun! It is a total thrill to see your concept take shape and form – from an idea in your head to hanging in the window! This is what it means to be creative! By task, I simply mean you can have a better idea of how to schedule your time.

So watching the videos first is a great idea. And don’t forget, you can turn your computer on and watch the part of the videos you need to know, then pause and go do that section of your Roman shade, then watch the next section, etc. If you get confused, you can go back and watch the same section over and over, so you can feel guided all the way.

In Part 2, the front fabric and lining is cut – be sure to add enough fabric for your bottom hem, the top fold-over, and the side seams. Remember to use drapery lining with ultraviolet blocks, so your shade fabric is protected, rather than plain muslin. Follow Terrell’s instructions for cutting the lining, pinning it and sewing it.

Many people are afraid to try making their own Roman shade. They think its difficult and complicated – but it’s not! Making Roman shades is actually quite simple if you have the least bit of sewing experience… and good instructions.

If you’ve never sewn anything before – it’s probably advisable for you to bone up on the basics before trying a shade. Find a YouTube video, TV show or library book that covers things like how to use a sewing machine, how to cut fabric, explains what a seam is, how to sew two pieces of fabric together, etc., Then sew an apron or a small curtain. It won’t take long and will give you the practice and confidence you need to sew your own roman shades.

I’ve scoured the internet for videos on making a roman shade and came up with some good ones. Let’s start with Terrell Sundermann’s series. Terrell has come up with lots of innovations and ways of putting together Roman shades that makes it easier and more fool-proof.

Let’s start from the beginning – here’s part 1:

Wood blinds and shutters are among the most popular window coverings sold in America today. However, these two products are also some of the most expensive. Faux wood blinds are about 30% cheaper than the wood blinds, and yet look very much the same, control light equally well, and come in the same styles. They still offer natural wood’s rich, subtle colors and unique textures. Plus, they don’t warp or bow.

This is important if you need to put blinds in a damp environment where real wood could easily get damaged. Faux wood is considerably more resistant to moisture and wetness than wood. Because they are less porous, warping and cracking almost never happens with faux wood blinds. Water just beads up on the surface, instead of soaking in. They don’t mildew from moisture, either, or warp or bow. This makes them a much wiser choice for a shower, small bathroom, laundry room, or in areas above a sink.

Aside from moisture, they fare very well in other durability tests. Because they are more pliable and don’t scratch as easily, they stand up better to wear and tear from children and pets as well.

What Are Faux Wood Blinds Made Of?

They are made from a combination of polymers, adhesives and veneers to re-create the look of real wood, without actually being wood. They can have a grain pattern imprinted or painted on them, or have a wood-looking veneer on the surface. This makes them heavier than real wood and not quite as strong per pound as real wood.

Today’s finishes are so advanced that you really cannot tell the difference between faux wood and real wood blinds. Many times, faux wood can be matched to nearly any real wood so it can fit in perfectly to your decor. But if you want to buy them off the shelf, you may be stuck with the colors and finishes in stock.

The Biggest Disadvantage

If there is one big disadvantage to faux wood blinds, it would have to be their weight. On smaller windows, this is normally not an issue. However, on larger windows, pulling up all the slats of a horizontal blind can take two hands and a great deal of muscle power and may not be suited for the elderly or those with medical conditions. It is less of an issue with vertical blinds as they move from side to side rather than up and down.

This suggests that it might be better to chose faux wood blinds for smaller windows and/or damp areas, and choose real wood horizontals for larger windows. Definitely go with faux wood in damp areas, because wood blinds would simply be ruined very quickly, losing your investment in them. With vertical blinds, weight is not a problem, so either wood or faux would work.

But there is no need to worry about any lack in quality or appearance in today’s faux wood blinds. They look just like the real thing!
