My amazing sister wrote these beautiful words for my son when he was still growing inside me…before we knew he was a boy, before he changed our lives forever. Each week, I would update her on his progress…”This week, he is the size of a berry,” I would say…”This week, the size of a plum…”

My baby boy turns two years old this weekend, and my head and heart simply cannot believe it.

Happy Birthday, my beautiful boy. Happy Birthday.

I love Scrabble…always have, always will. At present, we have no less than four different versions of the game in our home, including the iPad app and the fancy schmancy Onyx Edition. Did I mention that I love Scrabble? It turns out, I am not alone in my love, as evidenced by all of the amazingly creative Scrabble reincarnations that are out there. I am especially smitten with some of the ideas for the home; sweet, customizable, and with a generous helping of nerd. Just my style.
I love him for reasons far too numerous to even attempt to list. One of the many things that I love about him is that he notices things…when I get my hair done, when I try a new lip color, when I am wearing something new. Interestingly enough, this thing that I love about him is also the thing that drives me crazy about him. He notices things…like when I am wearing something new. Every. Blessed. Time. I suppose that it goes without saying that this endearing little quality of his gets me in trouble on a fairly regular basis, because if I am wearing something new, I bought something new. Again.

I have often wondered if I would prefer a completely oblivious mate, and therefore shopping without immediate repercussions, but have settled on no…the trade off is worth it. Until this week, that is. This week, his skills escalated to a level that I didn’t believe possible. Imagine, if you will…we are in bed, reading, chatting, catching up after a long day. Suddenly, he looks up…”Do you smell that?” he asks. “Smell What?” I reply. “It smells like new shoes” he concludes, and looks straight at me.

I have been caught red handed. The beautiful new Jeffrey Campbell Boots that arrived this afternoon and were immediately stashed in the back of my closet have been sniffed out. It is official…my husband can now smell when I go shopping. Awesome.

Sadly, the Summer season has officially come to a close, but happily, one of its most vibrant trends has carried into this one…with a twist. The brightly colored pants that found themselves all over the runways and the well-styled over the past several months have evolved into muted jewel tones, perfect for Fall. Accompanied by basic, understated pieces, they offer a beautiful punch of color, and keep your look current yet classic.

As a family, we try our best to buy (and consume) as much organic as possible…especially now that we have little ones to think about. Admittedly, this isn’t always as practical (financially and otherwise) as one might hope….I often find myself wondering if my trips to those wondrously intoxicating (and expensive) organic grocers will be in lieu of say, our little monkeys’ college educations. I kid. Kind of.

That’s why I was very happy to come across the above. The EWG recently published its most up-to-date best and worst lists in terms of pesticide laden fruits and vegetables, and estimates that we can reduce our exposure by 80 percent simply by knowing which foods typically have the highest pesticide residue, and therefore should be bought organic. As some of the worst offenders also tend to see the most action in our home, I am happy to know that our organic efforts really are worth it…and to have a good guideline for prioritizing while wandering the produce department.

I was first formally (or informally) introduced to ZARA many moons ago while visiting my sister who was studying in the South of France. It was a shopping experience like nothing I had ever witnessed before…women literally stripping down to their birthday suits instead of having to wait in the lines for the dressing rooms that serpentined the store. It was at that moment that I took a mental note…clearly, there must be something good going on here.

Years later, I still think of ZARA for fashionable yet reasonably priced pieces for Mama and (as I recently discovered) for her Mini as well. And though you won’t find me stripping down in the storefront, (this is best for everyone, I promise) you will still find me dropping in on the rare occasion that I am able to do my shopping in store instead of via the internet. Which brings me to my point…and it’s a good one. Starting today, ZARA is now available for purchase online.

Woohoo!!! Happy Shopping…and keep your pants on!!

I certainly don’t need a licensed professional to figure out why…If I took a minute to self-diagnose, I could easily attribute this funk to a fair amount of stress and a sizable dose of pregnancy hormones, the combination of which has left yours truly in need of a serious pick-me-up. As I haven’t been able to shake it on my own, I am hoping that a little bit of fashion therapy will help.

One of last Fall’s trends that has carried into this one should do the trick…I mean, seriously, don’t we all need a bit of sparkle in our lives every once in a while? I am thinking yes…definitely yes.

It is far too early to start thinking about the Holidays, but I recently came across an idea that was far too good to wait to share. Now that I have a (growing) family of my own, I often think about the traditions that my family shared when I was a child, and those that I would love to see live on. Perhaps even more meaningful, the ones that we would like to begin…the ones that our little ones will remember when they have little ones of their own. This one has definitely made the list.

The idea is simple. All of those amazing little things that happen throughout the year…a sweet moment, a hilarious musing by a two year old, a difficult time that you got through together, a reminder of why you began this crazy journey together in the first place…write them all down as they happen and keep them in a jar. Then, as a family, read them together on New Year’s Eve.

Sometimes the simplest ideas really are the best…and this one just got me. We have officially begun adding to our jar…and I can’t help but think of how the beauty of this idea will compound when our little ones can add to it as well.

If you are anything like me, this post is probably not for you. And…if you are anything like me, it probably should be. If you are not anything like me, congratulations…and I mean that. You take your time making purchases, do not buy on impulse, and are rarely motivated by the “I must have this right now because it is absolutely fabulous” factor.

Either way, the above is a great guide for when to buy and when to wait in order to get the most bang for your buck. Btw, I am currently debating whether or not I should share this with my husband for fear it will be used against me.
