<p>Bloating is caused by undigested food in your intestinal tract. As it lays there, your body is unable to digest it properly and so it begins to ferment. This fermentation process causes gas, and it&#8217;s this gas that bloats your stomach up like a balloon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Bloating after eating is no fun. If you&#8217;re like I used to be, your stomach can blow up to a tremendous size for seemingly no reason. It also doesn&#8217;t seem to matter how much you&#8217;ve eaten, or particularly <em>what</em> you&#8217;ve eaten!</p>

<p>Stomach bloating is painful, uncomfortable and frustrating, no matter which way you look at it.</p>

<p>So how do you put a stop to bloating after eating? Can you ever eat without the worry of the terrible aftermath?</p>

<p>The good news is—yes you can! <strong>Here are 3 invaluable tips:</strong></p>

<ol>
<li>Do you have a <strong>wheat intolerance?</strong> Try cutting out wheat-based products for a week. Many people find the wheat in gluten really hard to digest. Remember though, wheat is in many different foods, such as bread, crackers, biscuits and cakes. Personally, I&#8217;ve found that bread (especially white bread, but wholemeal bread too) causes the most bloating problems with me.</li>
<li>Do you have an intolerance for <strong>dairy products?</strong> Lots of people struggle to digest a naturally occurring sugar in milk called lactose. Try cutting out milk, cheese and yoghurt for a week (tricky at first, I know!) and check if it makes a difference. I find that if I have a little dairy I&#8217;m not too bad, but a whole pizza&#8217;s worth of cheese and I look pregnant!</li>
<li><strong>Do you drink enough water?</strong> Most people don&#8217;t drink nearly enough water. Your body requires a regular intake of fresh water to digest food properly. A lack of enough water can be enough to cause bloating symptoms all on its own. Drink plenty of fresh drinking water all day, you&#8217;ll be amazed at the effect it has on your bloating.</li>

<p>While prevention is always better than cure, I know what it feels like to need some instant relief when stomach bloating strikes. For the relief of bloating, natural remedies are the best way. Natural remedies usually don&#8217;t have any side effects and are cheap and easy to take.</p>

<p>My favorite natural bloating remedy is peppermint oil. You can take peppermint oil in tea. Simply buy peppermint tea bags, pop one in a cup and pour boiling water on it. Leave it to steep for about 5 minutes and drink. </p>

<p>You can also buy <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/peppermint-oil-capsules">peppermint oil capsules</a>. These wondrous inventions offer a higher concentration of peppermint oil and work more directly in the lower intestine where they&#8217;re most effective.</p>

<p>Try also drinking fennel tea. While not as easy to get hold of as peppermint tea, fennel tea also helps relax the colon, reducing the symptoms of bloating, constipation and IBS.</p>

<p>Your bloating might be caused by water retention. Dandelion root is a timeless classic for helping the body getting rid of excess water.</p>

<p>One of the best natural bloating remedies is in fact water! Drink lots of it regularly during the day. It&#8217;s essential for a healthy digestive system and will help flush out the waste and undigested food which is so often the cause of bloating.</p>

<li><p>Try to eat high fiber food. Abdominal bloating is caused by food that has remained in your digestive system too long. It begins to ferment, which produces gas and thus bloats your stomach.</p></li>
<li><p>Get plenty of exercise. Exercise in itself speeds up your entire metabolism, so if your digestive system is sluggish for whatever reason, a good jog or brisk walk can get things moving again. I often find that my abdominal bloating problems can disappear quickly by taking some exercise.</p></li>
<li><p>Avoid foods known to cause bloating. There are lots of foods known to be culprits in causing stomach bloating that it&#8217;s difficult to know where to begin. Certainly avoid beans and dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli. Or if you struggle with bloating, try taking some <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/digestive-enzymes">digestive enzymes</a> to help things along.</p></li>
<li><p>Relax! Abdominal bloating is often caused by just being too stressed, so your digestive system doesn&#8217;t get the attention from your body that it needs and deserves. Take your time eating and drinking, and the symptoms will disappear.</p></li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>If you are regularly finding yourself feeling bloated you have my every sympathy. I&#8217;ve suffered with it for years and have only recently really found ways to stop it happening and relieve the symptoms.</p>

<p>Do you know why you feel bloated so often? Typically it&#8217;s because your body isn&#8217;t able to digest the food you eat very well. Your food is digested as efficiently and as quickly as it might so it ferments, producing gas and wind that bloats your stomach up like a balloon. This fermentation makes you feel rotten, tired, listless as well as hammering your confidence in social occasions.</p>

<p>Here are some quick tips to get you started:</p>

<ol>
<li><p>Try cutting down on wheat-based products. I find bread is especially a culprit, with white bread the worst of all. Wheat contains high levels of gluten which our bodies find hard to digest. Replace wheat based cereals with oat, rice or corn-based ones. Try wheat bread alternatives like rye or barley bread. Eat oat cakes or rice cakes with salads.</p></li>
<li><p>Try cutting down on dairy products. Dairy products like milk and cheese contain lactose, a naturally occurring sugar. Our bodies find lactose hard to digest, which can lead to feeling bloated. </p></li>
<li><p>Find out about <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-stomach/swollen-stomach-food-combining">food combining</a>. The type of food we eat at the same time as other each other can have a drastic effect on the digestive system. You might be unwittingly putting lots of pressure on your system which could be causing the problems.</p></li>

<p>While there are some reliable and effective remedies for bloating, it&#8217;s also important to understand what causes your bloating in the first place. <p>I find that drinking lots of fresh water and drinking peppermint tea are excellent remedies for bloating if you already have it. However, I&#8217;d recommend nipping the problem in the bud before it starts.</p>

<p>Make sure you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Drink plenty of fresh water throughout the day, but avoid doing so around mealtimes. Avoid too much salt and caffeine, as these are two of the major culprits.</p>

<p>Avoid processed &#8216;white&#8217; foods like white bread, white rice and white pasta. Our bodies struggle with food that has been processed in this way. Stick to wholefoods if you can. </p>

<p>Lastly, try cutting down on eating wheat-based products like bread and dairy products like milk or cheese. Our bodies can struggle to digest these foods.</p>

<p>Instead of looking for remedies for bloating, concentrate on discovering the causes of your bloating, and take steps to eliminate them.</p>

<li><strong>Do some anti-bloating exercises.</strong> Dislodge trapped wind by lying on the floor and raising your knees to your chest. Do this slowly and only one knee at a time.</li>
<li><strong>Eat lots of fresh fruit.</strong> I sometimes find that if I&#8217;m really suffering, a big bowl of chopped fresh fruit is all I need to kick-start  my system into dispelling the gas.</li>

<p>The main reason bloating occurs is due to food remaining in your colon undigested. The food ferments in your system which results in the production of gas. This gas can&#8217;t escape and so bloats up your stomach.</p>

<p>Food might be remaining in your colon because your body is having trouble digesting it properly. Some foods like wheat and dairy products contain substances that our bodies have problems breaking down. Try cutting these out and see if the problem goes away.</p>

<p>It might also be because you&#8217;ve not chewed your food thoroughly enough or washed it down too quickly with fluids.  Your mouth contains saliva which contains digestive enzymes. <p>Having a bloated stomach is one of the most unpleasant symptoms I can think of. It strikes without warning, makes you feel fat and uncomfortable and brings with it a whole host of side-effects like gas and wind that certainly won&#8217;t make you popular at parties and social gatherings!</p>

<p>Thankfully, relief for bloated stomach symptoms is easy to come by. My favorite way is by taking peppermint, either in the form of tea or in capsules.</p>

<p><strong>Peppermint</strong> is a wonderful natural herb which you can use every day if you wish, with no nasty side-effects whatsoever. It&#8217;s an anti-spasmodic, meaning it effectively calms and soothes spasms in your gut which can cause bloating, IBS symptoms, excess gas and more besides.</p>

<p>You can buy <strong>peppermint tea</strong> from many supermarkets nowadays. Pop a peppermint tea bag in a cup, pour on some boiling water (no milk required) and then drink. Within 20 minutes I usually find relief for bloated stomach symptoms.</p>

<p>Ask your doctor to prescribe <strong>peppermint oil capsules</strong>. They&#8217;re more concentrated than tea, so provide even better relief. You can also buy <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/peppermint-oil-capsules">peppermint oil capsules online from Amazon</a>.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s really important though to <strong>tackle the causes of bloating</strong> head on, rather than simply living with bloating stomach troubles. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Always feeling full and bloated? If you&#8217;re looking for ways to relieve the symptoms you&#8217;ve come to the right place!</p>

<p>I suffered from constant stomach bloating after eating (and sometimes without having eaten anything!) I discovered that bloating is usually caused by <strong>undigested food</strong> remaining in your digestive system. This starts to ferment, which causes gas to build up, which leads to the uncomfortable symptoms of bloating. Urgh.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s how I managed to banish bloating for good (at least most of the time)!</p>

<p><span id="more-777"></span> </p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Drink lots of fresh water.</strong> This flushes your system and encourages waste products to move along and out of the back door (if you see what I mean).</li>
<li><strong>Eat plenty of high-fiber whole foods.</strong> Fruit and vegetables are especially great for this.</li>
<li><strong>Go easy on the bad foods.</strong> Processed foods like white bread, white rice, white pasta are really hard for your body to digest.</li>
<li><strong>Cut down on salt.</strong> Too much salt not only hinders your digestive processes but it also helps retain water too, which leads to even more bloating!</li>
<li><strong>Get lots of exercise.</strong>  My bloating problems halved when I ditched the car and started walking a little. Even just a bit of exercise can make all the difference.</li>
<li><strong>Are wheat or dairy products causing the problem?</strong> Many people have problems digesting the gluten in wheat (such as in bread, biscuits, cakes, etc.) and the lactose in dairy products (such as milk, cheese, etc.) Try cutting them out and see if it makes a difference. It made a huge difference with me.</li>
<li><strong>Try peppermint tea.</strong> I swear by peppermint tea. Peppermint is reknowned for it&#8217;s ability to soothe and calm the digestive system, which helps you get moving again.</li>
</ul>

<p>PMS (or premenstrual syndrome) can often lead to a feeling of abdominal bloating in the 2 weeks or so before the onset of your period. While us men don&#8217;t have to go through this, you women have my every sympathy! Luckily, there are many easy PMS bloating remedies that will relieve the symptoms.</p>

<p>The bloating is caused by high hormone levels which make stools and gas move more slowly through your intestinal tract.</p>

<p>Also, progesterone is very high around the time of your period, which causes water retention. Put the two together and you&#8217;re without doubt going to be searching for reliable <strong>PMS bloating remedies</strong>.</p>

<p>While there&#8217;s no way of stopping the high hormone levels, <strong>drinking lots of fresh water</strong> helps flush waste product through your system. Drinking more water actually encourages your body <strong>not</strong> to retain water—true!</p>

<p>Take <strong>plenty of exercise</strong> too. Physical activity not only helps food pass through your digestive system, but it also boosts your circulation, which reverses some of the effects of the high hormone levels you experience.</p>

<p>These then sit in your gut, fermenting away. This causes the gas which pumps your stomach up like a balloon and makes you feel all icky.</p>

<p>One of the reasons food doesn&#8217;t easily digest is because we eat the wrong kinds of foods together at the same time.</p>

<h2>Why would that be a problem?</h2>

<p>Well, put simply, different kinds of food require different digestive secretions. Protein, for example, require different enzymes to break them down than those required for carbohydrates.</p>

<p>Therefore, eating protein and carbs together means your digestive system is fighting against itself to digest food properly. This results in undigested food sitting in your intestine, which starts to ferment, which creates gas, which causes the bloat!</p>

<h2>So what can you do?</h2>

<p><strong>Now:</strong> think of the food you eat as being part of one of 4 distinct groups:</p>

<h3>Group 1: Protein</h3>

<p>This includes foods such as cheese, eggs, dairy, fish, meat, nuts, etc.</p>

<h3>Group 2: Carbohydrates</h3>

<p>This includes foods such as grains, biscuits, bread, pastry, starchy vegetables such as potatoes, etc.</p>

<h3>Group 3: Non-starchy vegetables and fats</h3>

<p>This includes things like butter, cream, oils, salads and seeds.</p>

<h3>Group 4: Fruit</h3>

<p>All kinds of fruit comes under Group 4.</p>

<h2>What are the rules of food combining?</h2>

<p>The rules themselves are pretty easy actually!</p>

<p>Here are foods you <strong>CAN</strong> eat together:</p>

<ul>
<li>Groups 1 &amp; 3</li>
<li>Groups 2 &amp; 3</li>
<li>Group 4 (on its own)</li>
</ul>

<p>Here are foods you <strong>MUST NOT</strong> eat together:</p>

<ul>
<li>Groups 1 &amp; 2</li>
<li>Groups 1 &amp; 4</li>
<li>Groups 2 &amp; 4</li>
<li>Groups 3 &amp; 4</li>
</ul>

<p>Looks pretty tricky huh? Well, it certainly does take a bit of getting used to, that&#8217;s for sure. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Regular readers will know I keep repeating the mantra: you <strong>must</strong> find out the <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/search-bloating-relief/">causes of your bloating</a> before having a hope of being able to relieve the symptoms.</p>

<p>With stomach bloating, prevention is most definitely better than cure. Knowing what food or habits set off your own symptoms, and avoiding them, is the best way to relieve your <strong>bloated belly</strong>. </p>

<p>Having said that, sometimes <strong>you just need instant relief</strong>. I know, I know!</p>

<p>So, if you&#8217;re really suffering, here are some simple exercises I often try. They&#8217;re easy to do, aren&#8217;t in the least bit strenuous, and never fail to relieve my bloating.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t be surprised if you end up passing a little gas whilst doing them though <img src='http://bloating-remedies.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<ol>
<li>Lie flat on your back.</li>
<li>Slowly bring your left knee up to your chest. Make sure you keep your right leg as close to the floor as possible.</li>
<li>Hold your left knee as tight to your chest as you can. Count to 20.</li>
<li>Release your left knee and repeat with your right knee. Count to 20.</li>
<li>Alternate your knees for around 5 times or more, or as much as you need to to relieve your symptoms.</li>

<p>While I had a hard time trying to not to chuckle at the overly loud presenter (shouting and barking at poor Dr. Oz, the guest), the clip is otherwise really informative! With the aid of a rather graphic animation <em>(eurgh!)</em>, Dr. Oz explains 4 simple <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaxyCp0vfqc">bloating remedies</a> that everyone can try.</p>

<p>The Doctor explains that bloating is a sign of <strong>civil war in your gut</strong>, where your colon becomes irritated, starts spasming and thus creates gas.</p>

<p>He says that roughly 20% of the gas actually comes from excess air that we swallow, with the remaining 80% from undigested food fermenting. He reckons we produce around 2 liters of gas a day <strong>(though I beg to differ, I know I personally create waaaaaay more than this on some days!)</strong></p>

<p>He outlines 4 causes and their corresponding <strong>bloating remedies</strong>:</p>

<ol>
<li><p><strong>Fizzy drinks</strong> &#8211; the carbonated gas bloats you up and your body has a hard time digesting the artificial sweeteners found in many of these drinks. The bacteria in your gut then gets to work feeding on them instead, thus creating bloating.</p></li>
<li><p><strong>Fruit and vegetables</strong> &#8211; the doctor cites beans, potatoes, broccoli and bananas (among others) as being culprits. This is because they contain sugars and starches our bodies have a problem digesting. Dr. Oz says he swears by <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-beano">Beano</a> to help digest these kinds of foods.</p></li>
<li><p><strong>Gluten intolerance</strong> &#8211; more and more of us are becoming intolerant to the gluten found in many foods (even ice-cream!) Reduce your bloating by cutting out these foods.</p></li>
<li><p><strong>Lactose intolerance</strong> &#8211; even more of us are intolerant to the natural sugars found in milk and milk products. The video shows a range of lactose-reduced or lactose-free products you can use to replace those that cause you bloating issues.</p></li>
</ol>

<p>There&#8217;s a great bit near the end of the video where Dr. Oz demonstrates the effects of <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-simethicone">Simethicone</a> on dissolving and breaking down gas in the intestines. I&#8217;ll definitely be checking Simethicone out.</p>

<p>What you may not know is there are actually <em>anti</em> bloating foods that <strong>actively help reduce bloating</strong>! Amazing isn&#8217;t it? </p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a rundown of 5 of the best:</p>

<h2>1. Water</h2>

<p>Obvious, but true: drinking lots of fresh water every day contributes to a healthy digestive system—helping undigested food along its way and keeping your system moving. </p>

<p>Drinking lots of water also helps <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloated-belly-water-retention">avoid water retention</a> that can cause a bloated belly. Sounds bizarre, but keeping up your water intake stops your body holding onto excess water, plus it helps flush the excess sodium out of your body which also contributes to water retention.</p>

<h2>2. Caffeine</h2>

<p>Small amounts of caffeine—in tea or coffee—can act as a diuretic, flushing the excess water out of your body which can cause water retention and bloating.</p>

<p>Too much caffeine in itself can cause other digestive problems so <em>please don&#8217;t go overboard with this one</em>.</p>

<p>Also, try to avoid taking in caffeine with <strong>diet soft drinks</strong>—the artificial sweeteners contain <em>sorbitol</em> which is a major culprit in bloating.</p>

<h2>3. Potassium</h2>

<p>Potassium occurs naturally in many foods and is a powerful <a href="http://health.howstuffworks.com/question565.htm">electrolyte</a>. Electrolytes are basically the component parts of the salts your body needs to function properly. Potassium is one example, sodium is another.</p>

<p>Too much sodium in your body (caused by eating too much salt) can make you retain too much water, which can make you feel and look really bloated.</p>

<p>Eating foods rich in potassium is a great way to <strong>move that sodium right out of your system</strong>.</p>

<p>You may already know that bananas are packed full of potassium, but also try eating avocado, spinach, sweet potatoes and papaya too. I&#8217;m hungry just thinking about it!</p>

<h2>4. Asparagus</h2>

<p>I absolutely love asparagus, and although it&#8217;s only available locally in season for a very short space of time (usually late Spring where I live), I always make the most of it when the time comes around.</p>

<p>Asparagus is a natural diuretic, so eating it flushes your body of excess water. Plus, it&#8217;s naturally packed with goodness and is very low in calories (except when you wrap them in bacon and dip them in bolied eggs like I do&#8230; yum!)</p>

<p>If you shop around, you&#8217;ll likely be able to find asparagus all year round, imported from around the world. It just won&#8217;t be quite as fresh, tasty or cheap as it would be in season, but still worth getting hold of. <h2>5. Raw fruit and vegetables</h2>

<p>I&#8217;ve only recently made a habit of <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloated-belly-fruit">consuming a big heap of raw fruit</a> whenever I feel really bloated. Eating raw food (like fruit or vegetable salads) is proven to drastically reduce that awful bloated feeling faster than any other bloating remedy I know.</p>

<p><a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-remedies-raw-food">Eating raw food reduces bloating</a> because it naturally encourages your digestive system to push out and get rid of the undigested food which is packed into your colon, fermenting and causing gas. </p>

<p>You might well experience a little <em>more</em> bloating the first time you try it, but it&#8217;s worth persevering. Trust me!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>In my last post I urged you to try a <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-remedies-raw-food">raw food diet to reduce your bloated belly</a>.</p>

<p>Yesterday I found myself seriously suffering from a <strong>very large bloated belly</strong>. I actually felt utterly horrible—full of wind, lacking in energy, highly uncomfortable. Bleurgh!</p>

<p>I&#8217;m not sure what triggered it—I do generally seem to suffer a great deal after the weekend. I wonder if it&#8217;s to do with changes in my eating habits?</p>

<p><strong>Does anyone else suffer more bloating after a weekend?</strong></p>

<p>In any case, I decided to test the raw food theory. Here&#8217;s a quick snapshot I took on my iPhone of the lunch I prepared yesterday:</p>

<p>Basically, I popped to the local grocers, bought a huge amount of fruit and chopped it all up in a bowl. I then added some natural probiotic yoghurt and ate the whole thing up!</p>

<p>I didn&#8217;t eat the whole thing in one sitting—that would be greedy—but I did eventually (over the course of the day) polish the whole lot off. </p>

<p>I think <em>any</em> fruit will do really, but for the record I threw in banana, apple, pear, blueberries, red and green grapes, kiwi, plum and a few bits of satsuma too.</p>

<p><strong>Yum!</strong></p>

<p>I&#8217;m really pleased to say that eating all that raw fruit <strong>definitely has had a major effect on my bloated belly</strong>.</p>

<p>Within a couple of hours I <strong>felt much more comfortable</strong>, my belly had reduced dramatically in size and I generally felt full of life. Better in fact than I&#8217;d felt for ages! Even today I still feel really great.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re suffering from a bloated belly, you must definitely try eating a whole heap of raw fruit salad!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p><img src="http://bloating-remedies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/bloating-remedies-raw-300x225.jpg" alt="Raw food, juice drink and apple" width="300" height="225" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-101" />As I&#8217;ve mentioned many times, much <strong>stomach bloating</strong> is caused by undigested food remaining in your gut, which ferments and produces the gas which blows your stomach up.</p>

<p>Eating <strong>raw food</strong> (such as salad, fruit, nuts and seeds) is often recommended.</p>

<p>Fresh, unprocessed food like this is full of natural fiber which helps push undigested food along, thus clearing your stomach. It also stimulates your digestive system properly, meaning you&#8217;re much less likely to suffer from excess wind and bloating symptoms.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s face it, processed fast food is a surefire way to put the blocks on your body being able to do its job properly!</p>

<p><strong>So, you try to eat lots of raw food.</strong> If your experience is anything like mine, your bloating problems actually <em>increase</em>!</p>

<p>I know whenever I&#8217;ve made a decision to eat only salads and fruit for a while to clear my system I&#8217;ve ended up with much more chronic bloating, excess wind and even loose stools <em>(and I don&#8217;t mean the ones you sit on&#8230;)</em>.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve never really properly understood why this was the case until I happened upon this excellent video from Natasha over at <a href="http://rawradianthealth.com">RawRadiantHealth.com</a>.</p>

<p>She explains that because your intestines are already in a poor condition and your colon is clogged, the addition of fresh raw food, at least in the first few days, will almost certainly make the matter worse. This <strong>only happens while your body has chance to clear itself out</strong>, and it&#8217;s well worth sticking it out with the healthy diet until your body has had time to adjust.</p>

<p>I can attest that she&#8217;s absolutely right and it&#8217;s well worth doing.</p>

<p>She especially recommends really upping the water intake; trying not to eat raw food that&#8217;s too dry (like nuts and seeds); simplifying meals to a couple of basic ingredients and drinking lots of green vegetable juices, especially those containing celery (don&#8217;t knock it till you&#8217;ve tried it! Delicious!)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Hi everyone, and hope you all had a great weekend!</p>

<p>We had a party for a friend&#8217;s birthday and had a great time. If yours was anything like my weekend, you also maybe had an alcoholic drink or 2?</p>

<p>Most likely you&#8217;re now feeling the effects in the form of a <strong>swollen stomach</strong> and excess gas caused by bloating. I know alcohol can not only cause a swollen stomach but also a bloated face, swollen lips, puffy eyelids and even broken veins in hardened drinkers!</p>

<p>Add to that flatulence, excess gas and loose stools and&#8230; well&#8230; it can make you feel uncomfortable and unattractive that&#8217;s for sure.</p>

<p><span id="more-94"></span></p>

<p>Now, I&#8217;m prone to bloating anyway (as you might well be too, if you&#8217;re visiting my blog) but it&#8217;s a problem that can affect many people who drink alcohol, even in small amounts.</p>

<h2>Why does alcohol cause a swollen stomach and bloating?</h2>

<p>As is often the theme in my posts, bloating can be caused by a range of different factors. In the case of drinking alcohol, the bloating can be caused partly due to weight gain from the extra calories and partly due to excess gas caused by fermentation.</p>

<p>Here are <strong>5 reasons</strong> why alcohol can leave you bloating and feeling miserable:</p>

<h3>1. Too many liquid calories</h3>

<p>There are lots of calories in most alcoholic drinks—empty calories that have no nutritional value.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s a theory that calories consumed in liquids don&#8217;t trigger your brain&#8217;s <em>&#8220;Stop, I&#8217;m full!&#8221;</em> sensors anywhere near as well as solid food. Therefore, it&#8217;s much easier to carry on drinking and taking in calories long after your body would have told you to stop if you were eating the same amount.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s easy to see how you might generally bloat and put on weight from drinking too much, just from the sheer amount of extra calories taken in. </p>

<h3>2. Alcohol stimulates your appetite</h3>

<p>Drinking alcohol can really trigger hunger, especially late at night if it&#8217;s a while since you ate a decent meal. The problem is that you often end up eating <strong>fatty, greasy food</strong>—the sort of food you might not otherwise have deemed healthy had you not been drinking.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s face it, most of us have found ourselves at one time or another in a fast-food takeaway shop after a night out, I&#8217;m sure!</p>

<p>The problem is that this sort of unhealthy greasy, fatty food can be really hard to digest at the best of times. For us guys with bloating problems, this can really make life difficult the next day.</p>

<h3>3. Late night digestion is tough on your body</h3>

<p>Tied into my point above: often you might head off to bed with a full stomach after drinking. You then end up spending the whole night with a <strong>stomach full of undigested food</strong>. This food then begins to ferment, which is one of the prime causes of excess gas and bloating.</p>

<h3>4. Coping with the toxins and wheat or grain</h3>

<p>When we drink alcohol, we load our systems up with toxins which our bodies then have to work really hard to process and get rid of. The extra work our digestive systems have to put in can in itself cause bloating and gas.</p>

<p>However, also the large amounts of <strong>wheat and other grain content</strong> can lead many people to be intolerant to many alcoholic drinks, without them even realising. Many people have similar problems with the grape content in wine too.</p>

<p>The toxins from alcohol, added to these &#8216;intolerant&#8217; substances, impairs your body&#8217;s ability to digest more complex food. Your system has its work cut out dealing with it all. This causes a huge build-up of sulfurous gases in your gut wall, which leads to a painful swollen stomach.</p>

<h3>5. Candida yeast feeds on alcohol</h3>

<p>Bloating in many drinkers is caused by the presence of live yeast (called <em>candida albicans</em>) in the intestines. You may not even know it&#8217;s there, but candida loves to feed on alcohol.</p>

<p>If you have an undiagnosed overgrowth of intestinal candida you could inadvertently be making your bloating symptoms far worse, without even realising it.</p>

<h2>How to reduce bloating caused by alcohol</h2>

<p>Knowing the reasons why alcohol causes bloating is a major step in reducing the symptoms. I have <strong>4 clear pieces of advice</strong> if you&#8217;re suffering:</p>

<ol>
<li><strong>Drink less alcohol</strong> (or even cut it out completely if the symptoms cause you real trouble).</li>
<li><strong>Eat well beforehand</strong> &#8211; drinking on an empty stomach definitely leads to more bloating and gas production than if you drink on a full one.</li>
<li><strong>Drink more water</strong>. Try to have a drink of water after every couple of alcoholic drinks if you can.</li>
<li><strong>Take probiotics</strong>. Regularly eating probiotic products (such as probiotic yoghurts or drinks), both before and after drinking, can help restore the balance of enzymes and &#8216;good&#8217; bacteria in your gut which is destroyed by alcohol.</li>
</ol>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I&#8217;ve talked a lot on this blog about bloating being due to excess gas caused by fermentation of undigested food. That is often the case, true.</p>

<p>But as you might know all too well, the causes of bloating can be various and complex.</p>

<p>One <strong>major cause of bloating</strong> I haven&#8217;t touched on is <strong>water retention</strong>. This is where your body retains too much water, giving you a bloated feeling and appearance. Same basic symptoms &#8211; <em>feeling of being full, appearance of being overweight</em> &#8211; but from a completely different cause.</p>

<p>Do you suffer from water retention? Is it likely to be <strong>the cause of your bloated belly</strong>?</p>

<p><span id="more-88"></span></p>

<p>Often women suffer from water retention more than men. Women can retain excess fluid due to changing hormone levels, especially during menstruation. As you know, I have no experience personally, but I can assure you my partner knows all about it!</p>

<p>Other times your bloated belly could be a result of a range of different health conditions, or possibly due to taking certain medications.</p>

<p>Further still, you might be retaining water due to simple lifestyle choices, which are thankfully easy to fix.</p>

<p>Want to lose the excess water and feel less bloated? Here are 5 top tips:</p>

<h2>1. Drink lots of water</h2>

<p>Huh? Did I just suggest adding even more water to the equation? Yep, you heard right! </p>

<p>It&#8217;s obvious if you think about it. Your body only has your best interests at heart. It&#8217;s tempting to think you should put <em>less</em> water in if you already have oodles of the stuff bloating you up anyway.</p>

<p>But your body starts to panic if it doesn&#8217;t get enough water and so keeps store of the precious little it can get. Try to deprive your body of too much water and it goes into survival mode, conserving as much water as possible.</p>

<p><strong>The result:</strong> water retention and stomach bloating.</p>

<p>If you want to stop your body retaining water, <em>give it all the water it needs</em>. Drink lots and lots of it throughout the day. Keep yourself hydrated, and there&#8217;ll be no reason for your body to try to keep hold of too much of it.</p>

<p>And in any case, drinking lots of fresh water also helps flush your body of toxins which in themselves can cause bloating and digestive problems.</p>

<p>Drink up!</p>

<h2>2. Get more exercise</h2>

<p>Exercising more is always a good thing. However in the case of banishing excess water it&#8217;s especially beneficial.</p>

<p>Exerting yourself leads to sweating, which is the body&#8217;s way of getting rid of excess stored water. This brings your overall body water weight down and has the added advantage of generally making you look more toned and healthy. </p>

<p>Less bloat, flatter stomach? Start exercising!</p>

<h2>3. Cut down on your salt intake</h2>

<p>Even if you don&#8217;t put much extra salt on your food, you&#8217;d be surprised at just how much salt you probably eat every day. Hidden away in packaged foods, tins and cereals, this salt is most likely a major contributor to your bloating problems.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s particularly the sodium content in the salt that is retaining water.</p>

<p><strong>What to do?</strong> Look for low sodium salt alternatives. Buy the more expensive sea salt, rather than standard table salt (it&#8217;s more expensive but it contains less sodium and you need less of it to get the same salty taste). Gradually cut down on the amount of salt you add to food.</p>

<p>Most importantly, keep a watchful eye on the amount of salt in packaged foods that you buy.</p>

<h2>4. Eat more vegetables</h2>

<p>Eating lots of veggies will naturally reduce your water weight. Sounds good! Some vegetables are particularly diuretic (meaning they naturally get rid of water) so seek out leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and onions.</p>

<h2>5. Seek out foods that have a diuretic action</h2>

<p>Some foods naturally contain high levels of potassium, which has the superb effect of balancing your internal levels of sodium which gets rid of water. </p>

<p>Bananas are high in potassium and easily available. Also try eating melons, oranges, lemons and coconuts too.</p>

<h2>6. Try dandelion root</h2>

<p>A natural herb, dandelion root has been known by the bodybuilding community for years as a very effective diuretic.</p>

<p>It safely strips the body of excess water without nasty side effects. It is known to dramatically reduce the feeling and appearance of bloating and is well worth a look.</p>

<h2>I hope that helps</h2>

<p>If water retention is the cause of your bloated belly, there are some very simple steps you can take to rectify the situation. Drink loads of water, cut down on your salt, get some exercise and eat wisely.</p>

Called &#8216;<a href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/expert_advice/article7080531.ece">How to deal with&#8230; Bloating</a>&#8216;, it shares the different viewpoints of 3 different kinds of health professionals.</p>

<p>I think a mistake people often make when looking for bloating relief is to only focus on one area, as if one single issue is the cause.  For one person, that might be just food intake. For another, it might be to worry about wider health issues. This article—rightly—shows 3 different viewpoints.</p>

<p>I&#8217;d go so far as to say that everyone should take a fully holistic view of their bloating problem as the article suggests.</p>

<p><strong>The GP/Doctor</strong> takes a look at a range of environmental factors, ranging from food intake to general lifestyle habits. They warn that the mysterious IBS may be the cause and even, in <strong>very rare cases</strong>, that bloating can be an indicator of cancer.</p>

<p><strong>The dietician</strong>, of course, focuses on the role of diet in bloating. They especially advise eating small meals regularly and not to load the body up on too much food (including fiber) that it can&#8217;t handle all at once. Interestingly, &#8220;<em>When your stomach is relaxed it&#8217;s the size of a clenched fist, so a sandwich will fill it up</em>&#8220;—I did not know that!</p>

<p><strong>The health psychologist</strong> warns against getting too hung up on bloating symptoms. They advise relaxing, getting out and socialising and how often the tension caused by worrying about digestion can further exacerbate bloating. I can personally attest to that one very well indeed.</p>

<li><strong>Too much salt.</strong> <em>The American Medical Association</em> says that Americans eat way too much salt. Excess salt can be the cause of all manner of health problems but it definitely can lead to the big fat belly bloat.</li>
<li><strong>It&#8217;s what you eat.</strong> Paying careful attention to <em>what</em> you eat is vitally important. Eat protein based food to make you feel fuller for longer, while avoiding the bloating.</li>
<li><strong>Sorbitol is evil.</strong> Ok, ok, I&#8217;ll concede: Sorbitol isn&#8217;t evil. However, this sweetener found in &#8216;low sugar&#8217; foods and drinks <a href="http://www.foodintol.com/food_intolerance/hot_ibs.htm">does cause major problems with digestion</a> which can lead to IBS, bloating and a whole host of other digestive issues. Avoid.</li>
<li><strong>Relax!</strong> Being stressed forces our bodies to not only deposit fat round our belly areas but also contributes to food remaining undigested, which leads to bloating. Chill out and take it easy!</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Hey everyone. Hope you&#8217;re all well and enjoying my tips and advice on reducing bloating. Feedback so far has been amazing and already 100 of you are visiting this blog every day. Quite a journey considering I only started the blog 3 weeks ago! </p>

<p>I thought it would be a good idea to put together a quick &#8216;bloating checklist&#8217;, a sort of <em>if-all-else-fails</em> cheat sheet you can just glance at at any time to make sure you&#8217;re on track to prevent your bloated stomach occurring.</p>

<p>Without further a-do, here is my <strong>quick list of &#8216;Bloating dos and don&#8217;ts&#8217;</strong>. Want to prevent abdominal bloating happening? Just follow these simple steps each and every day:</p>

<p><span id="more-46"></span></p>

<ol>
<li>Drink lots of fresh, <strong>still water</strong> throughout the day.</li>
<li><strong>Chew</strong> your food properly. Make sure you chew every mouthful thoroughly before swallowing.</li>
<li>Avoid <strong>drinking too much whilst eating</strong>. However, sipping water with a meal actually helps the digestive process.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t <strong>talk while eating</strong>. You&#8217;ll just swallow more air at the same time.</li>
<li>Eat moderate amounts at <strong>regular times</strong>.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t <strong>chew gum</strong>.</li>
<li>Avoid drink <strong>fizzy drinks</strong>.</li>
<li>Avoid eating <strong>fatty foods</strong> and don&#8217;t eat very <strong>spicy food</strong>.</li>
<li>Avoid <strong>dairy</strong> such as milk, cheese and cream. Many people are intolerant to lactose without knowing it.</li>
<li>Avoid <strong>beans and nuts</strong>. These are nasty gas producers at the best of times!</li>
<li>Avoid <strong>green leafy vegetables</strong> like cabbage and broccoli, and cut down on onions and garlic.</li>
<li>Watch your <strong>coffee and tea</strong> intake.</li>
</ol>

<p>Remember: you may not see results immediately, so don&#8217;t expect your bloating to magically disappear just because you laid off the soda for a day. It takes your body time and patience to adjust.</p>

<p>In my experience, consistency is the key—formulate a plan of action and stick to it for at least a few days.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Sorry about the lack of posts for most of this week. I&#8217;ve been lucky to be away travelling this week with my family, on a boat trip to the lovely European city of <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/belgium/flanders/bruges">Bruges</a>. </p>

<p>We had a great time! We had overnight ferry journeys there and back plus a couple of days in Bruges itself.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, I was sorely reminded how my <strong>bloating</strong> and general stomach problems seem to strike with a vengeance whenever I&#8217;m away from home. Does this happen to you too?</p>

<p><span id="more-42"></span></p>

<p>Why are we bloating sufferers more prone to bloating when travelling? It could be for many reasons, but I suspect it might be to do with the change in routine, different mealtimes and altered eating habits.</p>

<p>It got me thinking: when travelling, what are the best bloating remedies for when the dreaded bloat strikes?</p>

<h2>1. Try to eat at regular times</h2>

<p>I tend to have bloating problems when I eat at unusual times. When we were travelling this week there were times when we had quite a wait till mealtimes. There were also other times when we ate a couple of meals soon after each other. If you&#8217;re prone to a sensitive stomach anyway, this is a recipe for instant bloating.</p>

<p>As far as possible, try to <strong>eat at regular times</strong> when travelling.</p>

<h2>2. Don&#8217;t eat too late</h2>

<p>On our recent trip we&#8217;d been busy all day, sight-seeing and doing the whole tourist thing. We didn&#8217;t get back to hotel till around 7, and then had to spend more time wandering around looking for something to eat.</p>

<p>By the time we&#8217;d finally eaten we were so hungry that I simply ate too much at once. Added to this, we then walked back to the hotel on a full stomach and went straight to bed. </p>

<p>Eating dinner late means that you go to sleep while your body is <strong>still trying to digest your food</strong>. This leaves food undigested, causing fermentation and bloating. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s not easy when travelling, but try not to eat too late if you can at all help it.</p>

<h2>3. Watch what you eat</h2>

<p>It&#8217;s easy (and often necessary) while away from home to rely on quick, fast food. This sort of food is often <strong>low in fiber</strong> and can be <strong>greasy and salty</strong>. Eating this way definitely leads to bloating!</p>

<p>Make a real effort to <strong>eat something fresh and raw</strong> a few times a day. On our recent trip, I made a conscious decision to eat a salad meal on the ferry home, which did wonders for me. I almost instantly felt less bloated.</p>

<p><strong>My tip:</strong> as difficult as it is while away from home, try to keep up the fiber and fresh food intake.</p>

<h2>4. Take a probiotic</h2>

<p>Probiotics are great for returning the balance of friendly bacteria to your stomach. Probiotic products are easy to get hold of, such as in yoghurt drinks, and they&#8217;re usually small and portable too.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re travelling, try to take a probiotic drink or two each day. Your stomach will thank you for it.</p>

<h2>5. Carry your favorite bloating remedy</h2>

<p>I know from fellow bloating sufferers that everyone has their favorite bloating remedies. For me, it&#8217;s <strong>peppermint oil</strong> capsules. I almost never leave them at home if I&#8217;m travelling anywhere. </p>

<p>Because travelling can upset your digestion, it&#8217;s doubly important to know you can get some bloating relief when you need it most.</p>

<p>I popped a couple of <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/peppermint-oil-capsules">peppermint capsules</a> after each meal and it definitely helped relieve my bloating symptoms.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>Way, way back—I&#8217;m thinking as far back as 15 years ago or so—I went to see my doctor, complaining of terrible bloating, excess horrible wind, generally feeling really sluggish&#8230; you know what I&#8217;m talking about.</p>

<p>As doctors are prone to do (or at least the ones I&#8217;ve had in the past) he didn&#8217;t particularly try to <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/search-bloating-relief/">identify the causes of my bloating</a> problem. He just gave me a remedy to relieve the symptoms.</p>

<p>Now usually, this might have been a nasty medical remedy. However, he prescribed peppermint oil capsules, instructing me to take a couple of them with water right after eating.</p>

<p>I&#8217;d never heard of the benefits of peppermint capsules as <strong>bloating remedies</strong> before but I willingly gave them a try.</p>

<p>Ugh! My first experience of taking them was horrible! I actually remember the bloating getting <em>worse</em> rather than better, I suffered from incredible burning heartburn (which I&#8217;d never had before) and the dire smells I went on to create later that evening&#8230; well. I&#8217;ll spare you the details!</p>

<p>So with that, I decided peppermint just wasn&#8217;t for me and threw the rest of the capsules away.</p>

<p>It was only many years later, after another 10 or more years continuing to suffer with bloating, that I read <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-remedies-book">an excellent book</a> about the benefits of peppermint oil in relieving stomach bloating. At that point, my bloating problem had flared up again in a big way and, willing to try anything, I bought some peppermint capsules from a health food store.</p>

<p>You can buy 2 different types of capsules. The cheaper ones are <strong>soft gelatine coated</strong>, while the more expensive ones are <strong>enteric-coated</strong>.</p>

<p>I went for the cheaper ones first. I can wholeheartedly say that my experience second time around was <strong>much</strong> better. No heartburn. Almost instant relief, my stomach churning and bubbling calming right down within 30 minutes. </p>

<p>The only problem I found was that I didn&#8217;t like the intense cold sensation in my stomach nor the really strong taste of peppermint in my mouth that seemed to repeat on me for hours.</p>

<p>Not deterred, I tried the more expensive <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/peppermint-oil-capsules">enteric-coated capsules</a>.</p>

<p><strong>My advice:</strong> if you do decide to try peppermint oil to relieve your bloating (and you really should), I <em>strongly</em> recommend buying the enteric coated type instead. The coating isn&#8217;t as easily digested so they only begin to work once they&#8217;ve reached your colon and lower intestine, which is where they&#8217;re most effective.</p>

<p>With the enteric ones I get no major peppermint taste and they really do work more effectively. I can go from severe bloat to calm, flat stomach within the hour. Marvellous!</p>

<p>In a later post I&#8217;ll write a bit about how peppermint actually works to relieve bloating, but I think I&#8217;ve waffled on enough for this post.</p>

Really great to have had so many encouraging comments, and nice to know I&#8217;m not alone in being a &#8216;bloater&#8217;!</p>

<p>I presume if you&#8217;re here you experience a bloated stomach sometimes? I suffer with it too, in fact I have done for pretty much all my adult life actually. One thing I&#8217;ve learned is that if you&#8217;re looking for <strong>bloating relief</strong> it pays to understand the underlying causes.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve personally found most benefit in prevention rather than cure (although sometimes a blessed cure is all you need, I know!)</p>

<p>Stomach bloating is caused by gas. <em>Ok so far.</em> And that gas is caused by undigested food in your gut which has begun to rot and ferment <em>(this is the part I get a bit queasy&#8230;!)</em></p>

<p>For  whatever reason, undigested food is reaching your gut. It then sits there, ferments like crazy (without even asking you), thus creating gas, which causes the evil bloating.</p>

<p>Hmmm&#8230; So why doesn&#8217;t food get digested properly in the first place? Why does the bloating occur?</p>

<p>Well, it could be all kinds of things actually. You might only actually suffer for one or two of these reasons. This isn&#8217;t meant to be an exhaustive list, but it might give you some ideas of where to begin looking:</p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Intestinal gas</strong>—caused by good old-fashioned indigestion!</li>
<li><strong>Trapped wind</strong>—caused by wind being unable to find the emergency exit&#8230; <em>joke!</em></li>
<li><strong>IBS—or Irritable Bowel Syndrome</strong>. I’m sure you’ve heard of that one before.</li>
<li><strong>Dysmotility</strong>—otherwise known as slow digestion.</li>
<li><strong>Candidiasis</strong>—a fungal yeast infection, usually nothing serious and easily treated.</li>
<li><strong>Coeliac disease</strong>—an over-reacting immune system triggered by gluten-containing food such as wheat-based products like bread and biscuits.</li>
<li><strong>PMS</strong>—Pre-Menstrual Syndrome <em>(now I’m definitely sure, as a man, that this doesn’t apply to me&#8230;)</em></li>
<li><strong>Food intolerance</strong>—your body not taking kindly to some of the things you throw in there, often caused by wheat or dairy.</li>
<li><strong>Poor diet or eating habits</strong>—eating the wrong things in the wrong way (usually too quickly without chewing)</li>
<li><strong>Bacterial imbalance</strong>—where your gut doesn’t have the proper balance of ‘good’ bacteria <em>(they’re not all from the wrong side of town you know!)</em></li>
<li><strong>Stress</strong>—so stressed that your whole body is thrown out of balance and has other things to worry about than digesting your food properly.</li>
</ul>

<p>Over the next few weeks I&#8217;ll be looking in more depth at some of these. In the meantime, if you&#8217;re urgently looking for bloating relief, think about whether any of these might apply to you.</p>

<p>I only started <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com">this blog</a> on bloating remedies the other day—cheerily promising to share all my wonderful tips on stopping unpleasant stomach bloating—when today I&#8217;ve been hit by one of the worst bouts of bloating and wind I can remember.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not fair!</p>

<p>Funny thing is (except, again, it&#8217;s <em>not</em> actually funny&#8230;) I&#8217;ve tried everything in <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/bloating-remedies-book">the book</a> that I know, but nothing has seemed to work. That&#8217;s the weird thing about bloating, I find: some days (weeks, even!) there will be no sign of it and then out of the blue it arrives, with seemingly no cause, like a particularly unwelcome visitor standing at the front door.</p>

<p>Does anyone else get this? Tell me it&#8217;s not just me?</p>

<p>I can&#8217;t think today of anything that might have led to being a cause of the awfully painful bloated stomach and flatulence I&#8217;ve experienced today (and apologies to my family for the awful, erm, odours I&#8217;ve occasionally created too&#8230; sorry for being a little gross&#8230;).</p>

<p>Not really had any alcohol over the weekend, no coffee, couple of cups of tea maybe, plenty of fluids. Had quite a bit of exercise (did a 3 mile run on Sunday), don&#8217;t <em>think</em> I&#8217;ve been bolting my food down. Certainly avoided dairy products, I think.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve pulled out all the emergency bloating remedies too today. Tried drinking loads of water, drank 4 cups of peppermint tea AND had a few rounds of peppermint oil capsules too.</p>

<p>So, feeling pretty miserable and grumpy now (though quite a bit better for having a good whinge about it here!)</p>

<p>Does anyone else have days like these when all else fails? Do you have a secret weapon you pull out in case of emergency? I&#8217;d love to hear your ideas.</p>

<p>So what causes this bloating? Pretty simple actually: it’s trapped gas in the small intestine that&#8217;s produced by undigested food fermenting. It causes excess wind, stomach pains and a generally horrible uncomfortable and unpleasant feeling.</p>

<p>You’ll be pleased to know I have <strong>13 excellent bloating remedies for you</strong>! These have all really worked for me over the last couple of years.</p>

<li><strong>Eat slowly</strong>—eating too quickly stops your food being digested properly on the way down;</li>
<li><strong>Don’t drink while eating</strong>—flushing your food down stops your body being able to do its proper job of breaking food down;</li>
<li><strong>Cut down on dairy products</strong>—lactose in milk and cheese is known to cause many a human being problems (milk is made for baby cows);</li>
<li><strong>Cut down on wheat products</strong>—gluten in wheat, especially too much of it, can cause excess gas and bloat;</li>
<li><strong>Avoid some fruits</strong>—apples, peaches and pears are typical culprits;</li>
<li><strong>Eliminate gas-producing foods</strong>—stuff like beans, cabbage, onions, artichokes, asparagus, brussel sprouts and broccoli certainly make me gassy; </li>
<li><strong>Avoid antibiotics</strong>—take too many of these and you destroy the ‘good’ bacteria which digests food;</li>
<li><strong>Watch the sugar and salt</strong>—avoid too much of these in processed food, and knock the fizzy drinks on the head too;</li>
<li>Get some <strong>peppermint oil and peppermint tea</strong>—my number one bloating remedies! Swallow the oil in <a href="http://bloating-remedies.com/peppermint-oil-capsules">capsules</a> and drink the tea in, er&#8230; tea! Love it;</li>
<li><strong>Cut down on tea and coffee</strong>—the caffeine irritates your stomach, causing bloating;</li>
<li><strong>Eat lots of ginger</strong>—a wonder herb that boosts digestive fluids and waves goodbye to flatulence and nausea. You can buy ginger capsules and tablets these days which make it easier to take;</li>
<li><strong>Get more exercise</strong>—being active keeps your body’s internals in tip-top shape;</li>
<li><strong>Drink lots of water through the day</strong>—but not while eating of course&#8230; <em>(see #2 above)</em>.</li>
</ol>
