Lending a Hand in Oklahoma's Tornado Recovery

We’re all familiar with the desire to do something when we hear of devastating events like those in Moore, OK this week but, for many of us, no actual steps will be taken. Why? Often, it's not the lack of desire that prevents us from doing something. It's a lack knowing WHAT to do.

This week I received an email request from our colleagues at Drand Medical to help in a project that will be a real and much-needed help to the people of Moore. Drand Medical was gathering donations from the medical equipment industry to purchase pallets of clean, bottled drinking water. They had over 40 pallets by the time they reached out to us and were hoping to send even more. On top of that, they rallied their partners at Armstrong Relocation to transport the water (two semi-trailers full) free of charge. The combined talents and resources of these companies and all those who donated make it clear that community can do more than any one of us.

Ideas like these provide the opportunity to make a difference. If you’re not sure how you can help, turn to your community, your industry, or your local non-profits and hitch your talents to an idea that’s already in motion.

GE Definium 5000 vs. Definium 8000 Digital X-Ray Rooms

We’re all used to seeing numbers in our imaging nomenclature, right? The number in a CT scanner name is how many slices it takes. The number in an MRI name is how strong the magnet is. But what does it mean when OEMs start adding numbers in the thousands to the names of their digital X-ray machines?

People ask us about these numbers often and, to be honest, we're pretty sure they're just meant to sound "advanced" or "high tech". But what we can tell you for certain are some of the functional specifications of GE’s Definium 5000 and Definium 8000 digital X-ray rooms that will make a difference if you're searching for your best X-ray equipment:

Tube Mounting Style

The X-ray tubes of these two rad rooms are mounted in two ways. The 5000 is a single-piece unit. All components are connected to a single column with the detector and tube moving around the patient via u-arm configuration. The 8000 features an overhead tube that moves on ceiling-mounted rails.

Detector Configuration

The Definium 5000 is a single-detector system. The detector is mounted inside the bucky on the end of the u-arm. The 8000 is available in single or dual-detector configurations depending on whether or not a fixed radiographic table is purchased with the system. If the no-table or mobile table version is chosen, the single detector will be in the bucky on the wall stand. If the fixed-table version is chosen, one detector will be in the wall bucky with a second below the tabletop.

Footprint

Like all u-arm configured X-ray systems, the Definium 5000 has a relatively small footprint. It doesn’t have a table or ceiling rails and its wall bucky and tube support are a single piece. This makes the 5000 highly adaptable to any size of facility, but (unless you purchase a mobile table in addition) limits the types of studies that the system can be used for.

All versions of the Definium 8000 require an entire room with ceiling rails for the tube support. Its largest version features a fixed table and a wall bucky, each with their own digital detector. This version maximizes the types of studies the Definium can be used for.

Automated Positioning

The Definium 5000 features a manual positioning system in which the X-ray technician moves the positioner into protocol positions. The 8000 offers automated positioner movement between protocols for increased workflow.

Price Range

And, of course, one of the most crucial factors in the decision between the Definium 5000 and 8000 is the price. On the secondary equipment market, a Definium 5000 currently sells for around $75,000-$85,000. The two versions of the Definium 8000 that do not feature a fixed table and a second detector sell for around $100,000-$115,000. A full-room 8000 ranges between $165,000 and $175,000.

In spite of the big jump in the model numbers attached to the Definium family and all the factors we’ve just discussed, the biggest difference between these digital X-ray options is end user placement. The Definium 5000 is a good choice for sites with less space, lower patient volume, and tighter budget constraints. The Definium 8000, in all its configurations, will be more at home in a larger facility that scans more patients.

Siemens Sensation vs. Siemens Emotion [CT Scanner Comparison]

Sensations and Emotions… Sounds like a Lifetime Original Movie, doesn’t it? Don’t worry though- the differences between Siemens Sensation and Emotion CT scanners are much more entertaining and probably won’t make you cry. Since customers often ask for our help understanding which model is best for their imaging facility, we thought it best to address the main differences here:

Slice Counts

The Sensation series comes in 4, 10, 16, 40, and 64-slice versions. The Emotion series comes in 1, 2, 6, and 16-slice versions.

System Cooling

All Sensation CTs are water-cooled and generally require an outdoor chiller. All Emotion CTs are air-cooled. This difference gives the Sensation advantages in terms of system cleanliness and overall room noise and the Emotion advantages in terms of maintenance costs.

System Footprint

Sensations have a larger foot print. Being smaller, the Emotion series is better for facilities with space constraints.

X-ray Tubes

The Sensation series comes with either a Straton tube (8.0 MHU) or an Akron Q (5.3 MHU). The Straton (on some 16s, and all 40s and 64s) is very expensive to replace, but the Akron Q (on 4s, 10s, and some 16s) costs much less. The Emotion series uses Dura X-ray tubes; the Dura 202 or 302 for single-slice units, the Dura 352 for dual-slice, and the Dura 422 for 6 and 16-slice scanners. The Dura 422 costs more to replace than an Akron Q, but still considerably less than a Straton.

Patient Volume

Given the higher heat capacity of its X-ray tubes, the Sensation series is considered preferable for high-volume facilities.

System Age

Both of these series began manufacture in 2000; the Sensation at the 4-slice level and the Emotion at the single-slice. The Emotion 16-slice version arrived a couple of years after the Sensation 16 so, at that slice count, the Sensation is likely to be the older system.

If you polled 100 users on which of these scanners is better, I suspect the results would be 50/50. Depending on your site’s specialties, space availability, and patient throughput both the Sensation and Emotion series have their own niche to fill. 3 CT Scanner Maintenance Tips to Easily Increase Uptime

Who would love to see their CT scanner running at peak performance all the time? Put your hand down (that was a rhetorical question) and read the following tips that will help bring you closer to the dream: MAXIMUM UPTIME!

1.) Address intermittent issues before they put you hard down

Intermittent error codes or failures are, in many cases, a sign of future system downtime. Address these problems before they put you hard down. This is especially important for clinics that run their system 5-7 days per week. If you can schedule an engineer to come onsite one day that the system is not in use, they could help you avoid an impending system failure.

2.) Stick to your system’s suggested preventative maintenance schedule

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it’s true: preventative maintenance (PM) is vital to your CT scanner’s uptime. Many times you may not even be aware that your system has a problem that needs to be addressed until an engineer reviews the error logs. Checking connections, testing image quality, greasing bearings, cleaning fans, and making backups of your system data are just a few things that will be addressed during a CT PM.

3.) Maintain the proper CT suite environment

Room environment is crucial to the life of many CT scanner parts. Failing to maintain proper room temperature (recommended to be kept between 65-72° F) can in many cases lead to component damage.

Humidity is another atmospheric factor that needs to be monitored. Ideally these levels will be kept within 40-70% relative, non-condensing humidity. These conditions need to be maintained at all times in the CT suite (yes, this includes holidays and weekends). It may be advisable to purchase a basic alarm system that will activate if these levels are exceeded.

Why GE Lightspeed CT?

Why are GE Lightspeed CT scanners more common in hospitals and imaging centers than any other manufacturer?

Here are three reasons:

Since its inception, the GE Lightspeed CT series has been a popular choice for hospitals and imaging centers. Other manufacturers have continued to release more and more advanced CT systems as well, but none of them has enjoyed the same ongoing success as the Lightspeed. There are three main reasons for this:

Lower cost of service

More service engineers are trained on GE systems than any other manufacturer and more parts vendors carry GE parts. On top of that, GE CTs are compatible with after-market tubes from companies like Dunlee or Varian.

Air-cooled gantries

These systems do not require a chiller or alterations to a site’s plumbing and are generally simpler to maintain than most water-cooled systems.

Resale value

Although this is largely due to the other two factors on this list, GE CTs tend to retain more of their value than other manufacturers.

The Health Connect Partners Radiology and Imaging Conference is exactly the sort of event we love to attend and talk about! Another year has come and gone.

Here are some top moments from 2013 (and the pictures to prove them)!

5) Wonderful New Location

HCP went down to Atlanta this year - otherwise known as “Hotlanta” and home to The World of Coca-Cola.

4) Growing Attendance

Kudos to the HCP Board of Advisors for putting together another great year. For some of us here at Block Imaging, it was our fifth year at the show and it has been encouraging and exciting to see the growth in attendance of both providers and suppliers.

3) “Reverse” Style

This conference is in a unique “reverse” expo style: providers set up a booth and suppliers circulate on the floor. This is a perfect chance to connect with providers one-on-one and discuss current/future opportunities and solutions that best fit their needs. Thank you to all the providers who make this a true success!

2) Networking

The networking opportunities are endless and come via hospitality suites and receptions. What a fantastic opportunity to have a little fun while building relationships!

Neuviz 64 Series CT Scanners Compared

The Neusoft Neuviz 64-slice CT scanner comes in three different versions: the 64i, the 64e Basic, and the 64e Cardiac. The three versions have quite a bit in common in terms of technical spec, but there are also some major differences that create a placement “sweet spot” for each of them.

Here's the skinny on similarities, differences, and where these systems work best:

What’s the Same?

Among other things:

What’s Different?

Tubes

The Neuviz 64i features the CTR2250 X-ray tube. This tube has a current range of 30 mA to 420 mA, heat storage of 5.0 MHU, and a cooling rate of 815 KHU/min.
The Neuviz 64e Basic and 64e Cardiac feature the CTR2280. This tube has a current range of 30 mA to 667 mA, heat storage of 8.0 MHU, and a cooling rate of 931 KHU/min.

Generators

The 64i has a 50 KW generator
The 64e Basic and 64e Cardiac have 80 KW generators

Software

64i- Standard Neuviz 64 software package
64e Basic- Standard Neuviz 64 software package with capabilities to upgrade to cardiac software

Where Does Each One Shine?

64i- All Neuviz 64 CT scanners shine in the area of pricing- the 64i doubly so. A Neusoft customer can have 64-slice image quality for not much more money than a 16-slice from other manufacturers. Part of this cost savings is attributable to the smaller tube and generator. In terms of placement, this makes the 64i uniquely suited for medium-traffic facilities who do not intend to perform cardiac procedures.
64e Basic- The 64e Basic offers a larger tube and generator for facilities that need higher patient throughput but don’t intend to perform cardiac procedures. If system usage changes, the 64e Basic also offers the adaptability to be upgraded with a cardiac software platform.
64e Cardiac- As the name implies, the 64e Cardiac is a good match for facilities that need high patient throughput and cardiac capabilities.

Ultimately, the Neuviz 64 series is intended to make the jump into 64-slice imaging more affordable for facilities of all sizes, throughput levels, and specialties. Turning Used R/F Rooms into Refurbished R/F Rooms

Purchasing a refurbished R/F room can be a big way to save money over the cost of buying a brand-new system. But, “refurbishment” is a term that can mean a number of things, depending on who is doing the refurbishing.

The following details the processes Block Imaging uses to return used R/F rooms to OEM specifications for image quality, cosmetic appearance, and overall performance.

Table

The table process begins with disassembly. All the components are thoroughly cleaned and inspected for damage. Bearings, cables, connectors, and mechanical pieces are repaired or replaced as needed. The external parts are moved to our paint booth and refinished with OEM-quality paint products matched to OEM color schemes.

The table is then reassembled, a second inspection is performed on any reused parts as they are put back on the table and the table is thoroughly tested for operations per OEM specifications.

Wall Stand

The wall stand procedure is similar to the table procedure: disassembly, component cleaning/replacement, and fresh paint are all included on the front end. Post-painting procedures are similar as well from reassembly to full testing.

Overhead Tube Support

By now, you’re probably picking up on the pattern: diassemble, clean, inspect, paint, replace broken or worn parts as needed. It holds true for the tube hanger as well. In addition, each R/F room tube hanger receives replacement high voltage cables.

After all that, the tube hanger is elevated and installed on a custom ceiling rail system to simulate the way the R/F system will be installed at an imaging site. Under these simulated conditions, the tube hanger is tested to… that’s right: OEM specifications.

Glassware

During the refurbishment process, extra care is taken with the X-ray tube. The high voltage ports are cleaned and regreased and the oil in the tube is changed. It is then tested for image noise, arcing, and correct power. If a customer would like to have brand-new glassware installed, a fresh x-ray tube can be provided upon request.

Spot Film Device/Image Intensifier

After disassembly, a thorough cleaning of all table-mounted components is performed to prevent image artifacts caused by dust and debris. Covers and handles are removed and sent to the paint booth.

During reassembly, bearings, cables, connectors, and mechanical pieces are repaired or replaced as needed. Controls are tested functionally and inspected cosmetically for repair or replacement.

Console

Computer components are thoroughly cleaned and inspected for damage. All ports and cables are checked for secure connection and repaired or replaced as needed. Diagnostics are run on all computer systems to ensure functionality and that no problems exist that could become evident post-installation. All buttons and switches are checked for proper operation as are all enabled software features.

Our refurbishment team is also careful to double-check each machine for HIPAA compliance with full removal of any existing patient data.

Cabinets

The covers are removed from these cabinets and taken to the booth for painting. After the painting is done, the cabinets are moved back to the staging bay where all electrical components undergo inspection, reseating, and, if needed, replacement.

When the cabinets are fully reassembled, they are connected to the rest of the system and the R/F room is tested as a whole. In this stage of the process calibrations are performed to set the system functions at or above the OEM-specified baseline for image quality and to comply with FDA-mandated regulations for X-ray dosage.

Ultimately, quality imaging equipment refurbishment happens with thoroughness and product expertise. Experienced engineers and a detail-oriented approach to both functionality and cosmetics ensure that you’re getting an outstanding refurbished R/F system.

4 Ways to Make Selling Used Imaging Equipment Easy

Selling something as complex and costly as used medical imaging equipment can seem overwhelming, but there are things that can be done to both simplify the process and attract better offers. The four following steps will help:

1. Start with 2

In the search for prospective buyers, select two vendors to begin with. Wasted time, effort, and miscommunication happen when a seller starts out talking to too many buyers. The world has never been smaller and having your equipment offer sent around the globe gives a false impression of supply and, in turn, a diminished market price.

2. Info, Info, Info

Document as much information about your system as you can- system photos, serial tag photos, service records, QA reports, original sales quotations, etc. The more accurate information you have, the better your chances of collecting the strongest offers.

3. The Sniff Test

Once you have some offers in hand, take a moment to make sure the offers make sense. If two offers you receive are extraordinarily distant from one another (ie. $30,000 and $115,000), ask questions or pursue a third offer to find out why one is particularly low (or even high). It's also key to make sure the offers are apples to apples and ask the following question, “Is your purchase contingent on a subsequent sale?” If this is the case, it's important to know there's some additional risk of delay or cancellation due to another party or transaction.

4. BE DECISIVE

Once you’ve established a comfort level with the company you've chosen to work with and the price and details associated with the transaction, go for it! A timely decision ensures that you solidify the sale and start the path to a smooth deinstallation and removal. Waffling is best left for the breakfast table (Though I do love waffles!!).

Prodigy – Manufactured in the late 90’s through early 2000’s and are generally purchased overseas. Value: $3,000 - $5,000

Prodigy Advance – One of the most popular options both in the US and abroad... These were manufactured in the mid to late 2000’s. Value: $5,000 - $8,000

What can I do to get the most value for my system?

Keep your equipment unit under a comprehensive service agreement (including preventative maintenance visits)
Make sure to have all manuals and backup disks available
Round up all accessories, phantoms and positioners
Have a copy of a “passed” QC/QA report on hand
Make sure the equipment is clean and includes the table pad

But what about the prices I see people selling them for online?

The two main reasons for the “gap” is for logistics, refurbishment and profit. The costs associated to inspect, deinstall, transport, refurbish, install, fill out FDA Compliance Paperwork and provide a warranty for the new owner isn’t cheap. And of course you can’t blame the reseller for trying to make a couple bucks for their effort, right?

Neuviz 16 Ct Scanner vs. Lightspeed 16 Ct Scanner

Now that we're partners with Neusoft Medical Systems USA as a distributor of their Neuviz CT line, we at Block Imaging want to take the next few paragraphs to introduce you to the Neusoft CT products we now offer.To make this introduction as informative as possible, we've decided to compare the Neuviz 16 slice CT scanner to the more common GE Lightspeed 16 slice.

Read on to see how these two systems stack up side-by-side in a few major areas.

Tube and Generator

GE: 53.2 kW generator, 6.3 MHU anode heat capacity (standard)

Neusoft: 50 kW generator, 5.0 MHU anode heat capacity (standard)

The Lightspeed 16 does come out on top in the power department, but only just. The difference in generator capacity is negligible. Users would be unlikely to experience a noticeable difference in performance with specifications this close to one another.

The same is true of the x-ray tube heat capacities. The additional 1.3 MHU of the Lightspeed gives it an advantage in terms of throughput, but not a drastic one. The scanning needs of an outpatient facility or mid-sized hospital would be met well by the capacity of the Neuviz x-ray tube.

GE: 302 sq. ft.

Neusoft: 200 sq. ft.

No contest here. If you're looking to replace an existing CT scanner with minimal site prep or renovation, the Neuviz 16 will make that easier for you.

Neither of these systems requires an external chiller. This is a big space saver as well as a budget saver in terms of site prep and renovation.

Think of shopping for a vacation package: both options can get you where you want to go, but one of them comes with a rental car, continental breakfast, and tickets to a floorshow.

Price Point

Neusoft has the edge in this regard. Brand-new Neuviz 16s are available for about the same price as GE Gold Seal refurbished Lightspeed 16s, that is, 20-30% lower than brand-new GE systems.

How to Recycle Your Used Bone Densitometer

Happy Earth Day! The perfect time to talk about recycling, right? But there's no way you're gonna fit that old bone density unit into your curbside bin.

So, what are the most responsible ways to unload your bone densitometer?

Recycling:

If you have a bone unit from the mid-late 90’s, you're not likely to get much resale or parts value. Your best option might be to contact a scrapping company. Many scrap metal companies offer pickup service and will truck the system away for recycling. Just be sure to warn the scrappers if your system has oil in its HV tank. Who knows: your kids might one day play on a slide that used to be a bone dense!

Reusing:

If you have a unit newer than 2000, there's a better chance that it has real value for patient use at another facility or as a parts system. The most commonly requested bone density units on the secondary market come from GE and Hologic. Click here for the going rates on some popular makes/models.

OEC 9800 MD: Pros and Cons

If you've spent even a little time in the world of c-arms, you know that the OEC 9800 is a very popular system that comes in a lot of flavors (9800, 9800 Plus, 9800 Super C, etc.). Each variation has some features that set it apart, but the one that's, perhaps, the most unique is also one of the least common: The OEC 9800 MD.

What? You don't know this one yet? Clearly we have a few things to talk about.

The OEC 9800 MD C-Arm:

The 9800 MD is a C-arm with motor-driven c movements, controlled via joystick (think cath lab-style). The wheels of the unit are still controlled and propelled manually, but orbital, wig-wag, flip-flop, and rotational movements can be manipulated from the workstation.

Pros:

The MD eliminates the need for an additional tech to reposition the C during procedures. This convenience can free up valuable staff for other tasks in your facility.

The joystick allows all C positioning to be made one-handed and from the same spot. In facilities that operate their c-arms in smaller rooms, this can help relieve the workflow constraints imposed by tight quarters.

Going motor-driven also offers an image intensifier (II) configuration you won't find in manually-driven 9800s. A standard 9800 Super C only comes with a 9" II. MD Super Cs are available with either 9" or 12" IIs.

Cons:

On the downside, overall movement is slower compared to manual positioning. See the video below for a demonstration of the movement range and speed.

Another con of the 9800 MD is an increase in price over other 9800s. The extra features of the motor and the joystick increase the cost of both the initial purchase and parts and repairs.

For anyone exploring the purchase of an analog pain management C-arm, one concern you'll need to address is image transferrability. Analog models don't come with the same networking features as their younger digital successors and all those shots aren't going to send themselves to your PACS server.

What, then, is to be done if there's no room in your C-arm budget for a late model system? Don’t worry- there are options available that will work with an analog C-arm.

The following are just a few C-arm accessory devices that offer solutions for image transfer and review.

DICOM Box

Some C-arm models (ex. OEC 9800) have DICOM capabilities built into them. For those that don’t, a DICOM box can convert images to a universal, transferrable format and send them to
a site’s network for storage and review.

TIMS DICOM Box

The TIMS DICOM system is a device that records imaging studies in high-resolution, DICOM video format and sends them to PACS for permanent archiving. It also allows immediate playback so the results of studies can be reviewed and discussed with the patient.

MediCapture

MediCapture devices offer image portability in a USB flash drive format. The MediCapture records images to a flash drive that can be plugged into a PC for viewing or post-processing. Depending on your needs, MediCapture devices are available for still images, video, and high-definition video.

How Much Does a C-Arm Rental Cost?

Interim C-Arm rentals make perfect sense for many reasons... especially:

If you need to test your market to know if buying a C-Arm will be a good investment for you.
If you find the C-Arm you own down for repair and you do not expect it to be up and running anytime soon.
If you are running a training or continuing education course and need a few C-Arms to demonstrate procedures.
If you have to trim a backlog of patients.
If you have money in the operating budget and no money in the capital budget.

Whatever the reason, consider the following costs to make your c-arm rental work for you.

Length of Term vs Cost

The shorter the term, the higher the cost:

Daily C-Arm Rentals - range in cost from $1,500 - $3,000

Monthly C-Arm Rentals - range in cost from $3,500 - $6,500

Yearly C-Arm Rentals - generally a discount on the monthly rental fee

The longer the term, the deeper the discount.

Keep in mind that C-Arm rentals are designed to meet a specific need like the ones listed above. If you need a long term solution, strongly consider a C-Arm lease. Regardless of the length of term, the same amount of work goes into arranging logistics (installation, shipping, etc.). The shorter the rental term the higher the rental fee because the logistical costs are not spread out over time.

Additional Rental Costs

Just like every transaction there are additional fees to consider. Almost every rental quote will also have some form of these fees:

Accessories – lead vests, injectors, or c-arm tables can all be rented at an additional cost.
Security Deposit – this fee is refundable if the C-Arm is returned in the same condition it was provided to you or it will cover damage when appropriate.
Transportation – these are charges to cover C-Arm transportation costs to and from your facility. If you need your equipment quickly an expedited shipping fee will be charged. Of course planning ahead helps you avoid expedited shipping fees. Sometimes the situation necessitates a prompt solution and these fees are unavoidable.
Installation – this covers the cost of having an engineer install and deinstall the C-arm at your facility.

Make certain when comparing quotes to observe these add-on fees. Depending on the length of term, the fees will often be embedded into the monthly rental fee, but the quote should always note if these are additional or included.

The Price Range:

Presently, the five most popular models occupy a price range between $425,000- $595,000 installed, with a 1-year parts and labor warranty. These models include:

The Differential:

If you’re reading this article, it’s likely someone recommended you research a used or refurbished GE Senographe 2000D digital mammography system as a possible replacement for your analog mammo. That’s a great recommendation and, while GE is a leading brand, there are still some key inquiries that should be raised for a successful purchase.

The following are four questions that will help you avoid confusion and conflict with users and administrators as well as keep you out of a “leaky” digital mammography deal.

Question 1: Am I dealing with a reputable mammography equipment vendor?

Here in the information age, you can find a GE digital mammography unit just about anywhere on the internet. Ebay, CraigsList, auction sites, and brokers who sell everything from endoscopes to MRIs are selling GE full field digital mammography (FFDM) units. You want to be confident that the seller you are working with is well-versed in GE digital mammography before you buy.

Can your prospective seller offer references? Will the seller be able to deliver the system within the timeframe that you need? Can you expect service after the sale? These are all sub-questions that will help you answer the bigger question: Are you dealing with a reputable seller?
