At this stage, Wonthaggi is forecast to be a maximum of 32 degrees on Saturday.

Therefore we will change of Saturday Equestrian start time due to possible uncomfortable heat conditions.

All Rings will move forward one hour.

HARNESS RING will immediately follow allowing for a short lunch break Section one in Ring one.

Bass Coast Summer Agricultural Show kicks off this weekend after years of trying to get back on its feet due to the pandemic and lockdowns.

There is a great write up in this week’s South Gippsland Sentinel Times about Saturday and Sunday’s show activities. This blog article is to clarify exactly what you will find happening on both days of the show.

It will be held at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve this weekend on Saturday, January 14 as a one day show. The show is slightly modified this year.

While organisers are still very mindful of COVID, they want to celebrate how far they have come and feel optimistic for the future.

And to make the show even better this year, the Wonthaggi AP & H Show Society Inc were awarded a grant to support free entry for children, through the Victorian Government’s one-off investment in the Children Entry COVID Recovery Grants program.

The entry for adults and teenagers is $5 but cash only. Children under 12 are free.

There will have a big focus on kids, with a carnival and show bag trucks returning. There will also be plenty of food and coffee trucks, To make it even more appealing for families, there will also be an animal nursery. The donkey show is also very interesting, they come in all shapes and sizes, The mules can be as big as horses.

The Alex Scott and Staff Equestrian Exhibition will be returning much to the delight of crowds (Sunday to feature Equestrian only).

“Supporting COVID recovery and free entry for children to Victorian Agricultural Shows ..................

We are delighted at Wonthaggi AP & H Show Society Inc to have been successfully awarded a grant open to Victorian Agricultural and Pastoral Societies to access funding to support free entry for children to shows and field days and boost public COVID recovery.

The funding has been made available through the Victorian Government’s one-off investment in the Children Entry COVID Recovery Grants program.

Agriculture Victoria Executive Director, Policy and Programs, Sarah-Jane McCormack, said the program ensures regional and rural shows come back stronger than ever.

“For the past two years, most of the state’s agricultural shows have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 and these grants help organisers return to pre-pandemic attendance and revenue.” “Free entry for kids makes it easier for families to come along and see firsthand best on-farm practices and to immerse themselves in learning experiences to better understand agriculture,” said Ms McCormack.

Regional and rural shows are a fixture of Victorian society, building community spirit by celebrating agriculture in a fun, entertaining, educational and inclusive environment.”

For us here this will be such a game changer in the Bass Coast area as the social fabric of our area is feeling the effects of the cost of living and a day out for the children is a lovely thing to do. We have also reduced the cost for adults to enter our Show. We can’t ignore our community.

We truly appreciate this initiative by the Victorian Government and look forward to our Show in January

At this stage we will be holding horse events over 2 days and on Saturday we will also have a Poultry Section, carnival/sideshows and a Ute Show.

Unfortunately, we are not able to hold a PAVILION section at our show in 2023. This includes the following sections - Cooking, Craft, Photography, Flowers, Garden, Produce etc .

We are considering something through the year at a venue in the town for what would have normally been held on Show day in the Pavilion space.

Two years on since the outbreak of Covid the Society is being realisitic about what we can achieve, with reduced volunteer numbers and heavy workload to put on a show, we are going to do the best we can to put on a great outdoor Event in January.

We are excited and pleased to announce that we will be holding an Equestrian Only show at the Woolamai Racecourse, Trew Road, Woolamai, on 20th March 2022.

UPDATE 13 MARCH 2022 - ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY Pre Entries close Friday 18th March.

Strict Covid Rules will be in place.

COVID – condition of ground entry

As a condition of entry competitors, essential supporters, event officials, service providers and volunteers must read carefully and sign a form agreeing to abide by the following measures at all times whilst attending the Woolamai Recreation Reserve on Sunday March 20 2022

Failure to comply with the following COVID – 19 rules will result in removal from the grounds. Subject to DHHS announcements an equestrian competition may take place under the strict conditions.

ALL OF THE BELOW CONDITIONS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE BUT AS OF THE DOCUMENT BECOMING PUBLIC THE FOLLOWING APPLY. WE WILL KEEP UPDATING AS TIME GOES ON

To promote a safe competitions environment Wonthaggi and District AP and H Society Inc have put the following in place :

• Persons who are sick or unwell or displaying any sign of sickness must not attend.

• No general public and non registered spectators permitted. Essential services personal permitted

• Unless Covid number restrictions are eased by the time of the Show we will be running at a maximum number allowed on the grounds.

• Social distancing (1.5m) must be maintained at all areas.

• Please use the QR code provided at the front gate. An attendee's register including name, mobile phone number and time arrived at the venue must be recorded for every person in attendance.

• Temperature checks may be undertaken at entry

• All persons over the age of 12 years must wear a mask in line with the current DHHS guidelines

• All ribbons, sashes, rosettes and garlands will be handed to exhibitors for them to attach to their exhibits or self.

• Floats and trucks must be parked at least 4.5 metres apart.

• Show classes cannot exceed 10 exhibits. If more than 10 exhibitors present for a class it will be split into 2 heats.

• Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the venue.

• No sharing of equipment or utensils. Equipment must be cleaned after use.

• Toilets and common areas will be cleaned throughout the event period.

• Please place your rubbish in the bag provided and take it home with you so as to avoid unnecessary contamination of rubbish bins.

• There must be no more than 100 people in any marshalling area, event officials not to be included in the count.

All competitors and attendees must be registered prior to the event

please read the entry form in full, complete it and sign where requested.

• No refund on entries on the show day

• Supporters vehicles allowed – Occupants to be listed on Exhibitors entry form and waiver completed

• Please keep up to date with the changing government directives

• If we are unable to run due to Covid, full refunds will be issued, less a fee ( $5.00)

After discussions with Committee members, our insurance company and other stakeholders, the Committee of the Wonthaggi and District AP&H Society Inc has reluctantly made the difficult decision to cancel the January 2021 show in the interests of public safety.    

We would like to acknowledge and thank the Bass Coast Shire, all of our sponsors, supporters, volunteers, and Committee members for their ongoing support.

We are looking forward to a very welcome physical and economic recovery of our community and a Covid-19 free Show on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of January 2022.

The impact of the devastating bushfires in Victoria, particularly those currently in East Gippsland cannot be ignored .

In an effort to assist those affected by the bushfires, we will have collection points around the ground on show weekend for donations.

This valuable money will be sent to a bone fide agency for allocation where needed.

Secure tins with unique Show identification will be placed around the Show ground next Saturday and Sunday.

We will post further information in a couple of days with more information to come on our blog and Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The impact and cost of fighting bushfires in our state cannot be underestimated. Rebuilding is a massive job and will take time and money.

Fans are installed in the poultry pavilion and cages are fitted with water receptacles in case of hot weather.

We even have classes for farmyard fowls so they don’t have to be pure bred .

We also have classes for eggs too. The competition is HOT in our egg classes.
