1) What is a “bespoke”, “custom-made”, or “made to order” headpiece?

All the bridal hair accessories, hats and features featured on my website are handmade for customers as and when they are ordered, sometimes with a slight twist or adaptation, this is my standard service.

I also offer a designed from scratch service too, “Bespoke”, also referred to as made to order or custom-made.

Often “off the peg” is too much of a compromise for a special occasion. As a bride, a mother or the bride or groom or attending a special event you want to look and feel your best.

For some this is as uncomplicated as creating the clients vision, for others it can be more complex. This may include particular requirements, such as needing to look taller, coping with fine hair or hair loss, lack of confidence with head wear, styling with short hair, concern about glasses, finding something “age appropriate”, the list goes on, and this is where bespoke really comes in to play in a special way.

Concerns or worries I need to consider or reassure on? Wearing a hat or fascinator has become something many of us seldom do, in this day and age. Some ladies embrace the opportunity with gusto whilst others are really intimidated and overwhelmed by the prospect.

Forgive me if this seems a little nosy but it really helps me get to know you, your plans and your personality to ensure that I’m making the right piece for you.

The process is the same as in the earlier diagram.

In case you scanned past the bridal section, I’ll repeat, If we don’t meet in person or video chat, I’ll be requesting a photograph. It helps so much to see who I’m making for.

Whatever you are ordering, if there are any particular materials to match, I can send samples or you if appropriate and pictures are available at appropriate stages and before the item is sent. I tend to find that if you haven’t got a fabric swatch, reels of cotton work well.

4) What are the timescales for ordering Bespoke? How long should I allow?

Lead times vary, I prefer to schedule my workload around your dress fitting and hair trial dates but we can chat about this in more detail later. If you need something in a hurry just ask and I'll see what I can do. Payment is due prior to despatch.

Please be aware that some bespoke orders may require additional time for sourcing non stock materials, which may often be purchased from abroad so we may need to allow for this, in general as soon as you are ready to order the better.

5) What is the cost of a bespoke design?

It will be comparable with any similar pieces on the website as a rough guide. Certain specialist materials may cost more which would have to be factored in but I don’t charge a premium for the service itself.

6) I’ve seen a design I really like, could you make it?

No. This would be against the original designers' copyright and would be both unethical and illegal. If you have a specific idea in mind this can be used as a source of inspiration but no copies of other people's work will be undertaken. Wherever possible I will refer you back to the original designer.

7) What happens if I don’t like a bespoke piece?

Don’t worry, the process is collaborative and we can meet or exchange pictures whenever you want or as is required. If something needs changing I change it, simple. It’s your wedding day or special occasion and it has to be right, I understand that.

As a rule (and I can’t think of a time I’ve had to break it), there’s no additional charge for sensible changes and reasonable alterations. If though you buy a new dress and change the colour then it goes without saying it’s a new order, I can’t offer a full refund on a piece custom-made that nobody else would purchase.

5 Top tips for reviving damaged hats and fascinators

“Help, how do I fix my squashed hat or fascinator?”

It’s a question I’ve been asked a few times. How many of you have got hats and fascinators lurking in boxes that are too bashed or squashed to wear, but that you just aren’t ready to say good bye to them yet? I’m betting quite a lot of you. Perhaps you picked one up second hand with the thought that you could adapt it but you just haven’t got around to it?

Well this could be just the blog post for you. I’m trying something a little different this time and instead of giving you copious amounts to read I thought it would be easier to just show you so I’ve created some videos instead. I’m not big on the whole makeup for camera thing, I’m a little bit more take me as you find me so apologies in advance.

Before we get started, the important bits

I’ll preface this post by stating that…

1) These are not necessarily the “Pro” techniques, but they are using things that you’ll be armed with the equipment you’ll have at home, no particularly fancy tools or gadgets, as you’ll see.

2) If your hat is particularly precious, valuable or sentimental then speak to a professional.

3) Follow the instructions and take care with steam, I don’t want anyone scalded.

4) Don’t apply too much steam to items that are fixed together with hot glue gun (sadly most mass manufactured things are) as too much will cause the glue to weaken and materials to come loose. You can identify hot glue as it is very hard and opaque.

5) Clean hands are essential, you don’t want dirt and oils seeping in to and staining materials.

I must stress here, not to apply too much steam so that it causes the flower looses all shape, as this can’t be regained, easy does it. Ensure that you support the fabric whilst it cools if necessary.

Please take care with the steam and remember what I said about hot glue, not too much steam if in doubt. Ensure that you support the feather whilst they cool, if you lie them on a top to cool, they’ll end up flat on one side.

Mother of the bride – Wedding hat etiquette

Hats aren’t as big a deal nowadays as in times gone by when women wore hats day in and day out, when they were well versed in the dos and don’ts of millinery rules. I find this so sad, not because it’s bad for business (it isn’t really as plenty of ladies still want to dress up when the occasion permits) but because I just loved the style of bygone eras. I’m not sure whether you’ve watched “The Marvellous Mrs Maisel” on Amazon Prime? It’s very entertaining but if you are like me, it’s a rich visual feast of 50’s fashion and millinery, I can’t help but drool!

Anyway, I digress. What I’m here to help with today is a whistle stop tour of 5 things any self-respecting mother of the bride may want to know, to avoid a sartorial faux pas.

SHOULD A MOTHER OF THE BRIDE WEAR A HAT OR FASCINATOR?

My answer to this question is to keep your choice occasion appropriate. What does this mean?

Is it a large traditional church wedding?

A brim will almost certainly be the correct choice, whether that is a traditional crown and brim hat or a saucer.

Is it a small intimate wedding?

A fascinator or simply saucer is most likely to be the best choice in this instance, anything more could easily detract from the bride.

Is the wedding after 4pm?

A cocktail hat, pill box or button hat, or fascinator is likely the right option in this instance. Etiquette dictates that this isn’t the time of day for a large brim, also from a practical point of view it will throw you face into shadow as light will be sparse, it is also likely to be at odds with a more evening oriented dress code.

WHICH SIDE OF THE HEAD SHOULD A MOTHER OF THE BRIDE WEAR A HAT OR FASCINATOR?

I think there are two answers to this question.

THE TRADITIONAL

Traditionally a lady wore her hat or headpiece to the right. The origin of this tradition is alleged to date back to the polite custom of a gentleman accompanying a lady by walking to her left. This allowed her face to remain visible for him and allow conversation unimpeded. The tradition of the gentleman walking to the left is alleged to date back to the days when knights wore swords strapped to their left, ready to draw with their right hand. Had a lady walked at her knights left it would have clattered against her. Arguably in a line up if every lady wears their headpiece to the right (not exactly applicable to hats) it make kissing easier but this traditional formality is increasingly becoming extinct.

THE REALITY

Those days of chivalry are long since departed and although I’m a lover of traditions, I think (as do a good number of leading milliners) that there is more flexibility and choice. I believe that if a lady is investing good money in having a headpiece handmade for her, that at the very least , it should be made to be as flattering as possible to her, the side that suits her best is very much part of it.

WHAT SIZE OF HAT IS APPROPRIATE FOR A MOTHER OF THE BRIDE?

Traditionally mothers of the bride wore larger head wear than the mother of the groom, this reflected their financial contribution to the event in the days when the bride’s parents footed the bill. This tradition is still around to some degree but for the most part couples are funding much of the wedding and grooms parents are often making significant contributions too so this should no longer have a real bearing. As a mother of the bride you should wear what makes you feel confident and it goes without saying that guests should never dress to upstage the wedding party.

WHAT DOES ETIQUETTE DICTATE ABOUT WEARING A HAT INSIDE?

Men should ALWAYS remove their hats inside. Ladies hats are an integral part of their “ensemble” and should not be removed indoors.

WHEN SHOULD A MOTHER OF THE BRIDE TAKE HER HAT OR FASCINATOR OFF AFTER THE CEREMONY?

Traditionally a mother of the bride will wear her hat from the start of the proceedings through until the end of the wedding breakfast (the formal part of the proceedings). That said ultimately it is your choice what you decide to do but I would recommend at least until after the photographs have been taken. The lull between the meal and any subsequent evening celebrations is the ideal time to go and refresh, titivate your hair as required and re-emerge ready to party. All well behaved female guests who are abiding by the dictates of good etiquette will leave their hats in place until such time as you decide to remove yours, this it has to be said can provide scope for mischief if you know Aunt Gladys hates wearing hats and you love yours.

Wedding tiaras – Top 10 questions answered

Should I wear a wedding tiara with or without a veil?

There are no fixed rules, this is your day and you should do it your way. For me the decision should be guided by two main factors

a) By the ceremony venue, in a religious setting (particularly a higher or larger church) then veils are generally a must for that part of the day, even if whipped off quickly afterwards.

b) By the dress, if the dress is hugely detailed and elaborate you may not want to cover it up or if the dress is heavily textured with floral appliques it won’t sit smoothly. If the dress has a high neck and sleeves, it could just leave you too swaddled and fighting for breathing space.

I recommend deciding the most important factor for you. If the veil is crucial then select your headpiece around it, or perhaps when you take the veil off you add the hairpiece in its place. If you’re in love with your tiara try it with your dress at a fitting and try on different veiling options, you’ll soon know what looks right and how you feel.

How do I choose a tiara?

The most important answer here (for me at least) is to be guided by face shape, then look at the materials and detailing within the flattering shape. When you have a piece made for you this is much easier to control and ensure that you get what you really want.

Long or oval face

– Ensure that the tiara wraps round your head at least a little, if it is the same width as your face it will make your face appear much longer. By ensuring it wraps around the head it appears much more flattering.

Square or round face

– Ensure that the tiara is not narrower than the face, otherwise it will create the impression of a much heavier jawline.

Prominent nose

– Avoid a tiara that comes to a point in the middle, it creates the illusion of enlarging the nose, the effect is more visible in photographs than in the flesh, test with a quick selfie if you need to, you’ll see what I mean if you compare it against a different shaped one.

Small face with petite features

– Don’t overwhelm a small face with a towering tiara that completely overwhelms. It doesn’t need to be big to show up. The tiara’s visibility can be enhanced by the hair style but I’ll come to that later.

How do I wear a tiara? Where should I position it?

Well who better to tell us than the good people at Tatler Magazine. They describe how if you place your thumb in the dimple of the middle of your chin then place your index finger between your eyes at eyebrow level, then carefully lift your hand so your thumb moves to where your index finger was and where you index finger now sits is where it should be positioned.

A good tiara will have the detail sloping forwards if the band is placed on a level surface, this means that when the band is place properly, at a diagonal angle, the detail will stand up correctly.

How should you wear your hair with a tiara?

That depends entirely on length and your style. The one key thing is wear it in hair that hasn’t been washed for at least one day, otherwise it will be sliding out before you get down the aisle.

Can you wear a tiara in short hair?

Absolutely, Princess Diana did all the time, and so can brides. Tiaras are not the preserve of long haired ladies.

What sort of up do hairstyle with a tiara?

It’s your day so do it your way. You should look like the best version of you on your wedding day, not like some weird impostor who you’ll never resemble again. If you are a sleek and chic kind of girl then go for the polished look, be that a beautifully crafted low chignon or something a little more beehive for height. A small tiara sat against a higher hairdo will have more impact than if the hair is sleek to the head. If you’re curly haired or much more relaxed, embrace it. Meghan’s up do was definitely more tousled and modern looking and no less beautiful.

Can I wear long hair down with a tiara?

That really depends on the style of your day. In snootier circles it used to be preferred but then again look at Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge on her wedding day. I think the key is to take the side pieces to the back so that it sits better, the band is covered and securing pins or grips can be covered. It also stops the face from being too overwhelmed.

Should I match my wedding jewellery to a tiara?

Yes and no. It should certainly compliment but matching invariably cheapens the look, unless you are wearing the family diamonds. If you are wearing a tiara, earrings generally don’t need to be too big or chandelier like. A small dangle works as it is usually softer and more flattering than a stud. Be careful of a necklace (not referring here to a pendant) and a tiara as it can frame the face too much, you can end up wrapped in a big oval of bling, which if that’s your thing then great but I’d generally recommend just one statement at a time.

Tiara vs Headband?

I think this year we are starting to see the two merge as a trend with the halo style tiaras now available. They are a more contemporary take for the modern bride as opposed to the more fairy tale variety. Try an assortment on and see what works for you. Don’t forget that I offer a sample service so you can try at home, with your hairdresser or at a dress fitting.

What are your other top tips for wearing tiaras?

Cover when spraying hairspray to prevent damage and dulling, if possible add last.

If needs be elastic can be added around the back to help secure, particularly a heavy piece that risks rocking forwards

Don’t bend or reshape “cast” tiaras as the plating is likely to crack and flake and stones lost. You are alright with any of my handmade ones, they will withstand gentle flexing to ensure comfort.

When the band is going to be on display, ensure it is matched to your hair colour by covering in a complimenting velvet ribbon. I offer this service.

Don’t try and attach your veil to your tiara. They should be worn separately so the veil can be removed, and also so that the veil doesn’t drag the tiara out of place.

I’m predicting a significant return of the tiara this year, in fact the last few bespoke bridal commissions I’ve had have all been for tiaras, that hasn’t happened for a long time. They’ve never really gone away but have been generally favored but those seeking a more fairy tale look, this time there are more fashion forward contemporary options in the mix too. Having watched trends come and go for not far off twenty years I’ve generally got a good nose for these things. 2018 saw the weddings of Eugenie and Meghan, both of whom wore exquisite tiaras from the Queen’s collection and definitely created a huge resurgence of interest in this style of bridal headwear, which tends to take 18 months or more to be seen worn by brides as most plan their ideas long in advance. This combined with the arrival of the headband in 2019 has firmly established the popularity of the symmetrical headpiece was opposed to the side tiara alongside hair vines that have dominated for years. Style Challenge - Keana, Gina Bacconi. Black tie wedding mother of the bride advice

I’M A MOTHER OR THE BRIDE, WHAT SORT OF HAT, FASCINATOR ACCESSORIES SHOULD I WEAR FOR AN BLACK TIE WEDDING ?

It’s that time of year, the clocks have changed and the dark nights have arrived. It’s also the time of the year that many brides opt for “black tie” weddings, queue the annual stream of slightly befuddled mothers of the bride wondering what on earth to wear as the hat option that they’d have anticipated wearing isn’t going to work.

WHAT ACCESSORIES SHOULD I WEAR WITH THE KEANA DRESS BY GINA BACCONI?

The dress I’ve selected this time is the Keana dress by Gina Bacconi, a label much favoured by a lot of my clients for their wearability, comfort and style. They don’t scream “mother of the bride” in a Quality Street wrapper kind of a way (think frilly stand up taffeta collars, a little like the twisted strawberry cream wrappers). The additional bonus is that a lot of these dresses will re wear to other events.

Anyway, back to the Keana dress, it is available in red, royal and midnight blue but I can never resist a red dress. The cape detail is great for covering the upper arms that many of us loathe, the ruching at the waist is flattering and the split in the skirt is on trend but not too revealing so as to cause any embarrassment. The fabric is a silky jersey that will hang beautifully and not crease.

STYLING OPTION ONE

A FASCINATOR FOR THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE OR GROOM

If the black tie wedding is a big event with lots of guests present (who will all be very dressed up too) then I’d recommend considering an elegant fascinator. Not necessarily the type you’d wear during the day but on with some sparkle incorporated and something that you’d be likely to keep on all night. With a lot of guests milling around you need to be visible, by that I don’t mean in a limelight stealing way, however you need to feel appropriately crowned for the scale of the occasion.

HEAD PIECE - MIA OR ODILE

The Mia fascinator would fit the bill perfectly. It is a very elegant sculpted feathered headpiece, nipped neatly in the middle with crystal detailing though this could be exchanged (and frequently has been) for a diamante brooch. You could colour match or contrast, I’d probably vary my recommendation depending on your hair colour. It’s light and easy to wear and works equally well with short hair or long hair both up or down. The Odile would work for all the same reasons but offers a smaller, lower alternative.

STYLING OPTION TWO

A SPARKLING HEADPIECE, COMB OR PINS FOR THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE OR GROOM

This is something I’m generally resistant to for mothers of the bride as I always worry that it’s straying too much into bride or bridesmaid territory but in this instance it can be the perfect finishing touch. A side tiara, a strategically placed comb or pins would all be perfect solutions. The side tiara is the most flexible for short hair or hair to be worn down, to be worn with hair up, then the band could be covered in velvet. I would steer away from a “headband” as the flatten the hair a lot and can look a little too young but not in the right way.

HEADPIECE - CARLOTTA OR PETITE CARLOTTA

Either of these options would work perfectly, depending on how big a headpiece you wished to wear.

HAIR COMB - ALEXANDRA OR KELLY

Both these combs would be great options, depending on what size you favoured and whether you liked pearls. There are many other combs to choose from, these are just 2 of many I could have selected.

HAIR PINS - CRAWFORD OR CARLOTTA PINS

As with the other options above either of these would work, it’s purely down to personal preference.

STYLING OPTION THREE

STATEMENT EARRINGS FOR THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE OR GROOM

An event such as a black tie wedding is the absolutely ideal opportunity to dazzle in gloriously sparkly earrings. Such an elegant understated dress provides the perfect foil for going all out with stunning earrings.

EARRINGS - DENVER, MANHATTEN OR GEMINI

Where do I start? There are so many gorgeous options available, I’ve select just 3 pairs for your consideration but you really should go and take a peek at the others two. This is all of course a matter of personal choice, I’d recommend nothing too small if these are your key accessory but beyond that it’s whatever you choose.

This isn’t a dress that needs many accessories, its simplicity is its elegance. There is already crystal detailing around the neckline so I wouldn’t recommend adding a necklace into the mix if you go for statement earrings or a side tiara headpiece.

I don’t think I remember over the past 25 years, there being a wider variety of choices available to brides, than they can find now, this can only be a good thing. It’s great as modern brides are independent women, keen to reflect either their own personal style or embrace their bridal vision, either way the sheer volume of options available to them mean that this is possible, they don’t need to morph into an old fashioned stereotypical bride.

If you scour the online fashion blogs and wedding magazines as they review, analyse and critique the latest looks from the just passed New York Bridal fashion week, you’ll find probably 20 or more key looks, this reinforces my belief that the range of choices has never been better.

WHAT ARE THE KEY BRIDAL TRENDS FOR 2020?

WHAT ARE THE 2020 BRIDAL ACCESSORIES TRENDS?

Trends come and go but there are many stalwarts here to stay (at least for now) including:

Pockets - Who doesn’t love a dress with pockets?
Lace - Although there is a lot more heavier, more geometric or crocheted lace around not just the finer gauzy weight.
Jumpsuits -I think these are here to stay though the designs may vary as time passes, the time of brides being solely dress wearers is past.
Separates - This must surely be a permanent fixture from here on in, with their mix and match flexibility and in some cases re-wearability (if that’s a word) they are a great option.
Hi Low Hems - I’m not sure I’m a fan of this look (the lining needs to be right for it to look good) but they are still a firm fixture on the catwalk, from mini to train, to the more subtly dipping hemlines.
Low Backs - Great if you’ve good skin, minimal back fat and no boobs to support.

I could go on but instead I’m going to look broadly at 5 key trends and discuss how I’d recommend accessorising them, so here goes, in no particular order.

VOLUME - SLEEVES, SKIRTS, TIERS & RUFFLES

Volume, be that voluminous skirts, big sleeves or both. Old fashioned romance is firmly on the menu with this trend, and I for one love it, probably because it appeals to my inner little girl who dreamed of big dresses.

ACCESSORIES RECOMMENDATIONS

For me up to date styling on these dresses is key for the modern bride. You don’t need to don a “tiara” in the traditional sense just because the gown has “Princess” overtones, albeit modern ones. I’d strongly recommend the more modern Halo style tiaras and headbands to bring the look in to the new decade.

HIGH NECKLINES - HALTERNECK, VICTORIANA, 70’S

There are a lot of high neck dresses appearing in collections, sometimes the look is very demure, sometimes revealing but after a few years of very low plunging necklines their return will be welcomed by many who didn’t embrace that hard to wear look.

BRIDAL ACCESSORIES RECOMMENDATIONS

There are exceptions to every rule, but for me the rule of thumb with high necked wedding dresses is to keep the accessories on show at the front to a minimum, or at least pared back. The bride should always be the key focus and her face and look can easily become overwhelmed with too much “clutter” at the front. I’d recommend a fairly simple earring, obviously no necklace and a comb or pins at the back. There are no size restrictions here, this really comes down to your own preference.

OFF THE SHOULDER & BATEAU NECKLINES

There aren’t as many strapless dresses around as we saw a few years ago but the off the shoulder look is everywhere. Whether you prefer the softly draped, exquisitely structured or crisp neat plain cut off the shoulder look there is something for every one.

BRIDAL ACCESSORIES RECOMMENDATIONS

These off the shoulder looks offer a far wider choice when it comes to accessories styling. The lower necklines leave the brides face more room to be the focus so you are free to play around with larger or longer earrings, front facing headwear like halo tiaras, or the softer hair vines centrally placed, to the side or around the back. I would generally recommend against a necklace with this style of dress as the beauty of it is in the neckline the dress creates, there is a length and grace to the neck that a necklace would bisect and create the illusion of shortening and widening it, as well as “cluttering”. I’m not here as a hair stylist but unless a dress is very relaxed as the 2nd one in the grid, I’d go hair up, or at least swept away from the face for the beautiful grace. As a note of caution, I’d be wary of the heavy padded embellished headbands with this style of neckline as they’ll draw a heavy outline around the face when set alongside a strong neckline, the look could be quite hard.

FEATHERS

Feathers started to appear last season and I wondered if they’d be a quick flash in the pan but they are here in force this time, whether as a sparingly used trim of covering an entire skirt or gown. They are certainly an opulent and luxurious look.

BRIDAL ACCESSORIES RECOMMENDATIONS

I’ve been mulling this over and for me there are two key options for this trend. If you are going all out and going to embrace a feather embellished gown then keep the accessories bold, glamorous and feather free. You could opt for a glamorous headband, hair pins or the earring only route.

If you love feathers but don’t want to go all out on a feather gown, then a feather headpiece is the obvious solution to embrace this look. I have a new collection of feather headpieces in the making for launch early next year so for now I’ll share a few existing options.

The other way to wear the feather trend is with a bolero or wrap. These are available in a wide range of styles and colours for accessorising your look.

TEXTURE & APPLIQUES

Texture has been around for a long time but the appliques are getting a little bolder, often not covering the entire dress or skirt but added perhaps for a statement neckline. They can be incredibly pretty and romantic but I do sometimes think if not used carefully they can appear to add a couple of dress sizes to the wearer, rarely a look sought by brides on their big day.

BRIDAL ACCESSORIES RECOMMENDATIONS

Pretty much anything goes, it’s about balancing the texture and reflecting the vibe rather than making a match so I’ll try and give a few pointers.

If there is a large corsage details (particularly near the face) as in the 1st and 7th images, don’t try and reflect it in your accessories, this is the key focus apart obviously from the bride so simple understated earrings are enough, with perhaps some pins.
If the look is glamorous as in image 6, then embrace the glamour with sparkle in the form of a halo headband, sparkly comb, statement earrings or pins, stay away from florals or texture.
If the detail is very delicate as in images 2, 3 and 6 then small applique embellished combs or pins would work to continue the detail through, almost as if you’d been sprinkled with confetti petals. They are best made bespoke to compliment your gown.
If the dress is very much a “fashion” choice such as images 2, 4 or 8 then embellished headbands would work, be they beaded or the padded type embellished with beads or florals (think Miranda Kerr style wedding headpiece). Having watched Maleficant 2 the other day I now suspect that pastel pinks, blue and pistachio hues (as seen in New York) may be very much present.
If full on florals is your thing then a floral fascinator could work well with a dress like no 8.

OTHER STRONG TRENDS THIS SEASON WORTH A MENTION ARE:

suits and tailoring (with trains thrown in for good measure)
high splits which I think remain the reserve of the confident and
exposed corsetry on show as the focal point of the dress, rather than beneath the surface of the fabric.

These trends don’t have any specific accessories requirements to take into consideration though as they are both big statements in themselves for the most part they don’t require statement accessories as there is the risk of the wearer becoming secondary to the outfit, always a big no for me in terms of bridal, evening wear and red carpet is an entirely different matter.

What is By Harriet all about?

I take it for granted that everybody who happens across one of my social media posts or briefly clicks on my website will of course know what I’m about, what I do, why I do it, why I’m good at it etc. Bonkers really! I don’t really remember ever stating it out clearly so why on earth would anyone know so here goes.

WHAT IS “BY HARRIET”?

By Harriet is my business and my passion. It started as a side hustle hobby when my now nearly 19 year old son was a toddler and became my full time business and income following maternity leave with my daughter, now almost 14.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

There are 3 key elements to By Harriet. The first two, bridal and millinery, were there from the very start. I made a tiara (my own) and then a fascinator (with a lot of jewellery along the way too). My handmade orders are pretty much a 50/50 split. As such I’ve never really known what to class myself as. Although I’d studied art at A Level and was a fairly competent seamstress I’ve had no formal training in my “craft”. I’m self-taught and so imposter syndrome took hold and even now I struggle to say I’m a “milliner”. I don’t think there is a title for a bridal accessories maker and “designer” always sounded pretentious and grandiose. The third element I mentioned is selling pre-made pieces that I buy in to retail but more about that later.

WHAT SORT OF BUSINESS IS “BY HARRIET”?

I’ve tended to link myself to the “Wedding Industry” (I do hate that term but it is what it is). I think it’s because wedding shows gave me an instant access to brides and their mothers whereas I’m not sure where I’d have begun from a purely millinery standpoint, I find the world of fashion is just too big and scary to contemplate. I love the theatrical, dressing up, statement making and attention grabbing, but in reality I’m quite a contradiction who lurks happily makeup free, in yoga pants and a sweatshirt (if you’ve seen my Instagram). I’m more about keeping it real in my day to day social media behind the scenes stories rather than the deceptively curated world of Insta perfection.

I started much the same as most of the hand makers of accessories, I liked making pretty things, so I’d say primarily By Harriet is a handmade small business. It’s always been a ridiculously competitive sector with a high turnover of small businesses but I’m proud to stand alongside a number of other talented creators I respect hugely, whose businesses have endured by focusing on individually hand making beautifully crafted quality pieces for their clients.

RANT ALERT

I never really do this but I need to purge, I need to explain what By Harriet isn’t first of all, for you then be able to appreciate what it is. Scroll down to below the indent to avoid should you wish, I’d completely understand!

A lot of new accessories brands pop up, with brides to be, thinking it will be a fun way to earn some money and good luck to them, the best of them hopefully go on to thrive (trust me, it’s not that easy). Many others however, (way too many) surface that purport to be hand crafted but years of experience and insider knowledge mean I (and other industry peers) can instantly recognise the pieces as being from Alibaba and DHGate, mass produced Chinese wholesalers. Etsy and Not On The High Street are also awash with these cheap imports masquerading as “Designer Handmade”, it makes my blood boil. I suppose I could admire their marketing chutzpah, it’s certainly never been my strength.

I could disappear way too far down that infuriating rabbit hole so I’m going to have to stop myself getting too side tracked, suffice it to say such “Designers” actively give the “Wedding Industry” a bad name. They are misleading brides who believe they have a handmade design. Their pricing leads brides to have unrealistic expectations about the cost of handmade, as they may sell a piece for £90 that costs them £7 (very realistic example of these types of traders pricing practice) but for a small creative business to buy such materials and make a comparable piece it may need to be retailed at £150+ with minimal profit after labour, packaging and overheads. That has to raise some serious questions. I’m not saying that such products shouldn’t be sold, it is a personal choice for each bride, however if you shop in a designer artisan boutique because that is important to you, you don’t expect to be sold Primark products. Speaking of which, Primark are selling some moon and star hair slides at £1.99 a set , the same pieces are being sold by multiple others in the industry for over £20 a set and way beyond, buyer beware!

All that said, I don’t obsess about this for hours now like I used to, it wasn’t good for me. I tend to keep my head down and focus on what I do, not others. I can’t change others behaviour, all I can do is just ensure that I’m able to proud of mine.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT HANDMADE “BY HARRIET”?

As I was saying before I digressed, I just liked making pretty things and became pretty good at it, but over time that has changed. I still like making “pretty things” but I’ve discovered a real flair for understanding and knowing what will suit individual clients and their particular occasion, be that accessories for a bride or millinery for a mother of the bride (or groom), wedding guest or race goer. Some of this is undoubtedly as a result of years of experience, much of it though is a deeply rooted gut instinct that I didn’t appreciate I had, but that now continually becomes more and more finely honed.

Over the years I’ve encountered ladies of all ages, shapes and sizes. As they say variety is the spice of life. I’m inherently a problem solver and this variety has allowed me to deploy this practical bias with my strong instinct.

I’ve worked with alopecia suffering brides, ladies recovering from chemo with very sensitive heads, and wheel chair bound clients who don’t want to be lost under the brim of a hat and excluded from the merriment above them.

I love working with frustrated older brides who don’t want to dress as a “princess” bride but rightly, would rather embrace the woman they are now, it’s great to be able to walk them through options they didn’t realise they had, then seeing pictures of them looking radiant afterwards.

I love working with tom boys or ladies who haven’t a clue where to start and helping them find something that works for them, designs that don’t try and morph them in to stereotypical brides or mothers of the bride.

I like showing ladies who feel they can’t wear hats and headpieces with glasses or short hair that they can, it’s simply the case of trying the right designs.

I love helping ladies discover that they do suit hats or headpieces after years of believing they didn’t, they just hadn’t tried the right things.

I love ladies who have a strong vision of what they want and striving to make that vision a reality for them, especially ladies going all out for ladies day at the races.

I’m honest with people. If something isn’t going to work or suit someone I’ll tell them (even if it means the potential loss of a sale) and offer a reason and a better alternative suggestion. I believe most women prefer this friendly frankness rather than being flattered in to spending on the wrong thing.

I see some clients in person but many I never meet other than via email, phone and Skype. Whether I meet them in the flesh or not it is equally important for me to get a proper understanding so that I know what I’m creating for them is the going to be right. Don’t just take my word for it, I love these quotes from past clients, they mean so much and I love looking at them when I’m having a confidence wobble.

WHAT ABOUT THE THIRD ELEMENT, THE READY TO WEAR?

Years ago I used to do jewellery parties as a way of taking along my millinery pieces to display and advertise, whilst earning money, rather than paying out on pointless advertising (it costs hundreds and honestly doesn’t work). I found some good suppliers along the way and often sold jewellery to clients who visited the studio. I also sold the ready to wear pieces when I did the National Wedding Shows (I don’t now but that’s another blog post) and over the years expanded to include pieces that ladies were asking for like the feather wraps and boleros. I’ve added most of them to my website but there are still more to come, in particular the hair accessories.

WHY SELL PRE-MADE ACCESSORIES WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR OWN? I HEAR YOU WONDER

Well it comes down to that old practical thing again. I’m realistic, I’m financially “cautious” (half Scottish, half Yorkshire) and I’ve been there, done that and got the t shirt when it comes to weddings. I had 5 bridesmaids and it costs money. I’d happily make you anything you wanted to pay me to make but I don’t really feel that I can make many bridesmaids options at a “sensible” price point.

I don’t charge a premium because something is bridal, my costs are based on a simple forumla of materials, labour, etc, so there is no easy way to make cheaper pieces for bridesmaids (I’m not the most brazen business woman you’ll meet). In my studio I’ve a number of great bridesmaids ready to wear hair piece options that won’t break the bank, over the next month or so I’ll be adding them to my website too. I’m contemplating some sort of discount system for multiple purchases of the same item as I do that at the studio, you’ll have to stay posted or DM me if you want details before then.

DOESN’T THE RETAIL ELEMENT CONTRADICT MY EARLIER RANT?

I NEVER ever misrepresent these pieces as handmade or as my designs, I’m explicit in this. My biggest issue is with the misrepresentation of what the product is, the lack of integrity. I don’t charge excessive mark ups on these items either they are sold at a fair and competitive price. that said I don’t have the buying power of the likes of Debenhams.

SO WHY SHOULD YOU CHOOSE OR RECOMMEND “BY HARRIET”?

I make quality products served with knowledgeable and practical advice, beautiful things for real people, and I want to continue doing so for as long as I can.

I’M A MOTHER OR THE BRIDE, WHAT SORT OF HAT OR FASCINATOR SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR AN AUTUMN WEDDING ?

WHAT WILL SUIT THE GRACE TIE FRONT SHIRT DRESS BY BOMBSHELL?

Apologies for repeating myself but the dilemma remains, “What should I put on my head?”. The dresses and outfits are generally an easier choice, after all we wear clothes every day but headwear is a different matter. In these posts I try to demystify the process.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Katya Wildman, the brains and power house behind “Bombshell”. As a costume designer and stylist to celebrities and TV she totally understands ladies and how to dress them, particularly the hour glass ladies. Using this insight and flair, she now expertly creates beautiful dresses that cover up, balance and flatter to make the wearers feel fabulous, and to top it all, they are all British made. I really think they make the most perfect Mother of the Bride dresses. The piece I’ve chosen for this post is from her occasion wear wedding range but a lot of her other less formal dresses would be equally fabulous for less “formal” weddings.

THE DRESS

Grace Tie Front Shirt Dress - Bombshell

“Inspired by Grace Kelly and Dior dresses of the 50’s. This shirt dress is both flattering and elegant. The set in sleeve line brings in a contemporary silhouette. 3/4 turn back sleeves and a stand up collar and a button through front with a concealed placket front. Princess lines sculpt and visually raise the bust and the beat tie front flatters the tummy area. The skirt leaves the hips at just the right place and we have added a netted underskirt which adds structure but not volume which means the skirt doesn’t project too much. STYLING OPTION ONE

SCENARIO - LARGE WEDDING OR FLAMBOYANT CLIENT

For their autumn wedding, this Bride & Groom have decided that they want to go all out, there are a lot of guests and the venue may be quite grand, I’m imagining a grand country house. An event like this needs a headpiece that will be visible, that ticks the “Mother of the Bride” box but that will also be comfortable to wear. With a lot of guests milling around you need to be visible, by that I don’t mean in a limelight stealing way, however you need to feel appropriately crowned for the scale of the occasion.

HEAD PIECE - CASSANDRA

The Cassandra hat just exudes autumn opulence. It is a spectacular feathered creation sitting on a beret base, secured by a comb and hat elastic. I’d recommend keeping this palette of natural feathers but introducing emerald or gold highlight feathers. I wouldn’t recommend colour matching the silk as I believe it could be too much of a solid colour block and overwhelm the wearer. I also don’t think you can top the beautiful sheen of a luscious silk so you shouldn’t try, I’d recommend complementing it instead, anything else could look too matte or almost a cheap shine in comparison.

STYLING OPTION TWO

SCENARIO - LARGE WEDDING BUT PETITE CLIENT

The scenario is as described above but in this instance the wearer is quite petite or less flamoyant.

HEADPIECE - KELLY

This is an apt choice given the name, must be a destined match. The Kelly is a great design in that it creates an illusion of size with the reach of the statement feathers comparable with the width of a large brimmed hat, however the central base and feathers are actually very neat and quite petite so they don’t overwhelm the wearer. It has been an unbelievably popular fascinator that I’ve made so many different variations of, it’s popularity never wains and no two are ever the same. I think the champagne and gold tones with the natural pheasant would compliment the dress beautifully.

STYLING OPTION THREE

SCENARIO - MEDIUM or SMALLER & MORE INTIMATE WEDDING

I could imagine this dress being worn at a very smart medium sized wedding with around 60-80 guests, not for anything more informal or smaller. This would be a mother of the bride who want's to reflect the elegance and style of the dress but not over do it as this beautiful dress is a such statement itself. She may be one of the few ladies in head wear, but she also wants to dress up for such a special occasion.

HEADPIECE - BERENICE

My final choice is again based around the beautifully autumnal feeling pheasant feathers, perfect with the opulent emerald. As I suggested with the Cassandra, emerald or even gold highlight feathers could be added. As with the Kelly as the weight is low to the head it sits securely with no rock and is very easy and very comfortable to wear.

Whatever your choice I believe comfort is key to any mother of the bride headpiece. You want to be able to put it on and forget it for the day. There are too many hugs, kisses and photographs, helping with your daughters dress, drinking champagne and juggling your clutch bag, you don’t need to hang on to your hat too.

This isn’t an outfit that needs many accessories, the high collar, cuffs and bow are detail enough along with a headpiece. I’d recommend simple pearl earrings and not much else, I’m assuming you may well be wearing a corsage. I’d suggest keeping shoes and bag to a soft light gold or pewter in a simple classic court. I’ve fallen out with nude heels, they initially seemed like a good idea but they can look clumpy if you aren’t careful to get the right shade and colour.

Boho Babe Collection, exquisite romantic hair accessories

BOHO BABE - Designed For The Modern Boho Bride

I’m excited to introduce the new “Boho Babe” collection. This is perfect if you are seeking a timeless romantic hair embellishment, pieces that provide a wide flexible range of styling options and are easy and comfortable to wear. You may have seen one of the designs before (an early hit), it’s been lurking for a while awaiting it’s companion pieces, I glad to be able to share it officially now

INSPIRATION

So where did the idea come from? Hair vines aren’t new. I won’t even try and pretend otherwise. I’ve created them in a couple of past collections, these are a little softer and more subtly elaborate. These pieces aren’t so much about being a statement all of their own, rather they’ve been designed to complement beautifully dressed hair, luscious lace dresses and gently complete the bridal look. They’ve been designed to be worn flexibly. You could re position after removing a veil or changing your look daytime to evening. If you want hair accessories that are visible but not going to overwhelm you then these are perfect for you.

THE DESIGNS – Romantic hair vines & hair pins

The collection as designed, is created with a range of Swarovski crystals and pearl, seed beads, porcelain flowers, fabric flowers, glass pearls and dainty filigrees. Should you wish the colours can be changed to your requirements, (materials permitting) or mounted on a headband so that they can be worn in short hair. Matching hair pins mean that you can dress a loose plait with pins in addition to a vine, or your bridesmaids could wear the matching pins. One of the pieces will event convert to a sort of bib necklace so you can wear it again after your wedding should you wish. There are samples of all the pieces available to try if you are unsure about your design choice.

PHOTOSHOOT

This shoot was a completely new departure for me, working with new people, it felt a little strange spreading my wings but it wasn’t a scary move. I’d met the really lovely Catherine the photography wizard behind Boho Chic wedding photography a number of times, and I love her absolutely beautiful work. We’d chatted at length before the shoot and discovered a lot of shared passions for period costumes (particularly the 1930’s) and we’re both committed foodies.

Catherine introduced me to April Sky, a truly gorgeous strong, and beautiful lady. April was an all round star as both makeup artist and model (both her professions though mainly a make up artist). She’s based around Manchester and Cheshire and I can highly recommend her to brides in that area.

Other than that we kept things simple, we shot a few millinery pieces and the “Boho Babe” pieces in Catherine’s Yorkshire studio, and made time for a yummy lunch too (big thanks to Mr Boho Chic). It’s hard work but fun this business, though no where near as glamorous as the final pictures. I’ve been selling these cover ups for years now, and I’ve learned a lot about which options work best for different brides so I’ve distilled my top tips and observations here for you to ponder, of course I’m more than happy to chat through at greater length should you wish.

FEATHER BOLERO - BRIDAL COVER UPS

Best dress style

Gowns with a fuller skirt
Gowns with a detailed embellished neckline
Gowns with straps (though works equally well without)

Pros

It’s always going to look balanced on photographs, it isn’t going to slip out of place. There’s nothing worse than your photographer capturing THE perfect picture of you and your partner, you know, the one that you’ll have on the wall, the one that becomes your favorite, but then you spot that your wrap has slipped out of place and looks wonky, then every time you see the photograph you want to dive in to rearrange it, to complete the perfection. A bolero stops that from happening.

A bolero can work to create a gorgeous hour glass figure when worn in conjunction with a fuller skirt. The perceived width it can add to the shoulders is balanced by the lower volume and enhances the appearance of a more cinched waist.

A great range of colours offer plenty of choice for bridesmaids.

It will keep you warm, of course.

Cons

Boleros aren’t a great fit with Asymetrical dresses, that said I’m sure there’ll be an exception to the rule. There can be just too many different lines going on, fighting for attention and detracting from you the wearer, it is better not to let the neckline become cluttered.

If you are wearing a column dress or a very slim fitting dress a bolero can (not always) make you appear top heavy, particularly if you are more triangular (sorry I don’t mean any offence, it is just the clearest way to describe it) like a swimmer with broader shoulders or a larger bust, the look can be unbalanced and appear top heavy.

Best dress style

Strapless gowns
Gowns with an Asymetrical neckline
Off the shoulder gowns, Bardot neckline.
All skirt widths but particularly suited to column dress, mermaid or slimmer skirts

Pros

Wraps offer far greater flexibility in how they can be worn, compared with the boleros. They can be fastened centrally or to the side, worn on or off the shoulder.

They can be styled with a simple hook and eye fastening or a bow fastening added for a statement. A brooch fastening or clasp can make a real statement.

Wraps can provide warmth without creating shoulder width (providing the way you wear them, suit the neckline or your dress).

A great range of colours offer plenty of choice for bridesmaids.

It will keep you warm, of course.

Cons

Wraps can slip quite easily and move round. If this happening will risk spoiling your look I’d suggest pinning in place discreetly. The last thing you want is it looking wonky in photographs.

FEATHER JACKETS & CAPES - BRIDAL COVER UPS

Best dress style

Most dress styles, these cover ups are a next layer to the outfit rather than an additional detail added to the dress.

Pros

Pure cosy luxury.

Great as a prop for outdoor photographs and creating a different look.

They will keep you very warm, of course.

Cons

They add a lot of volume, so need styling carefully.

FLOWER GIRL CAPE - CHILD BRIDESMAID COVER UPS

Best dress style

Pros

Happy little girls, they love the dressing up and they stay cosy too, win win!

Cons

Non I can really think of.

Actually, the pompom ties could be too much of a distraction if they decide to use them for playing “Conkers”, the ties could however be replaced with hook and eyes or a button and loop.

THE MOST COMMON CONCERNS ANSWERED

In my experience most ladies have got a range of surprisingly common concerns when it comes to choosing their accessories. I’d like to offer some reassurance that there aren’t any problems in over 15 years, I’ve been unable to solve, I’ve answered those I hear most regularly but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have a different worry.

1. WHERE DO I START? THERE’S TOO MUCH CHOICE, I FEEL OVERWHELMED

This is a very real problem and I completely understand. My website probably doesn’t help as my range of designs is huge, however you don’t have to sort this out alone. I’m here to help, just give me a ring, make an appointment or we can chat on Skype and I can help you narrow down the options and find the perfect piece for you.

2. I WEAR GLASSES

That’s absolutely not a problem, you don’t need to morph into a different person for your special day, or stumble around half blind. We’ll work together to find the best design for the look you want.

3. I DON’T LIKE WEARING HATS

I completely get that, they aren’t something we are used to wearing in this day and age and they can take some getting used to. It could be though that a hat isn’t right for you. Perhaps a fascinator or cocktail hat would be better, or if not a stunning piece of statement jewellery instead. I’m here to help, listen and advise. I’m not here to force you into something that you are going to look and feel awkward in.

4. I’VE GOT SHORT HAIR

That’s fine, the rule book that says brides must have long hair doesn’t exist. There are loads of options to rock your perfect pixie cut or beautiful bob, just ask and I’m here to help. There’s a blog post that addresses this concern directly, there’s a link at the bottom.

5. I DON’T LIKE HEADBANDS, THEY HURT

You are so right! There are a tremendous number of headbands out there that seem to have been explicitly made for torture purposes rather that securing a hair accessory. Mine don’t, I’m happy to send one for you to try, I’ve converted 100’s of ladies but not to worry, there are plenty of other options we can talk through.

6. I’M AN OLDER BRIDE, I DON’T WANT TO LOOK LIKE MUTTON DRESSED AS LAMB

Absolutely, I hear this all the time. There is simply no reason why you should when I have so many gorgeous options for you. I help 100’s of older and second time around brides who don’t want “Princess” or “Boho Babe”, and rightly so. I believe a bride should always look the best version of herself at that point in time, and celebrate with style. Get in touch and I can definitely help.

7. I’VE VERY FINE HAIR, OR I’VE SUFFERED HAIR LOSS. WHAT CAN I WEAR?

Don’t worry, there are still plenty of creative options open to you and I’ve helped plenty ladies with different versions of this dilemma. Alopecia sufferers, cancer patients, or just simply very fine haired ladies, I’ve been able to help them all. If you need help, reassurance or advice, just get in touch.

8. HELP, I GET MARRIED NEXT WEEK

9. HATS DON’T SUIT ME

I’d be a wealthy woman if I had a pound for every time this was a conversation starter. It’s true, not everybody does suit a hat but there is something that will suit you, you just haven’t found it yet. Birdcage veil top tips and your questions answered

YOUR BIRDCAGE VEIL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The chances are you’ll never have worn a birdcage before and as such you are bound to have a few questions. The following are some of the questions most commonly asked, both to Google (or other search engines) and direct to myself. I’ve kept the answers brief and to the point but I’m always happy to chat further if you want to know more, just get in touch.

So, here goes …

HOW TO WEAR A BIRDCAGE VEIL?

There are lots of answers, mainly determined by how you plan to wear your hair. If your hair is up then a comb can easily be secured, If you have short hair or are wearing your hair down then a headband would be more secure.

HOW DO BIRDCAGE VEILS WORK?

Birdcage veils generally are available in one of two ways. They are an integral part of a design, or simply a plain birdcage veil with no added embellishment that can be worn in conjunction with another piece.

HOW TO SHAPE A BIRDCAGE VEIL?

A well made birdcage veil shouldn’t need shaping, that should be determined by the way it is cut and made. If you really aren’t happy, if it is one from By Harriet, return it for alteration, if sourced elsewhere I would suggest using bobby pins to secure in a better shape.

CAN YOU GET A DETACHABLE BIRDCAGE VEIL?

The answer to this question really depends upon the design. Sometimes the veil does need stitching in place as part of the style or the embellishment is too small to cover the separate attachment, in this instance I’ve sometimes made a second piece the same without the veil to substitute when the veil is removed.

HOW TO WEAR BIRDCAGE VEIL AFTER CEREMONY?

One of the most asked questions. If you’ve paid for a veil and it’s part of your styling you won’t want to take it off straight away but you won’t want it getting in the way. If you are wearing a longer birdcage veil here is a quick tip. Fold the birdcage veil back inside itself in half and secure it with a couple of bobby pins, get a bridesmaid to help. Doing this will create a shorter version of your look. DON’T fold the veil backwards, you’ll look like you’ve been through a wind tunnel and it will detract from any embellishment.

HELP, SQUASHED BIRDCAGE VEIL? IRONING A BIRDCAGE VEIL?

Once you receive your birdcage veil I’d recommend not storing it in the box, it is better sat where it can stay in shape. If it has flattened then your first option is to waft it in kettle steam (carefully) though if your headpiece has silk flowers be careful as too much steam can cause them to loose shape. This will generally be enough. If it needs a little more and you are very careful, a VERY cool iron can be used. Be careful as most birdcage veils are synthetic and thus the fabric can misshape or melt easily.

WHAT IS A BIRDCAGE VEIL WITH TWO COMBS?

These are most commonly known as “Visor” veils. I must admit I avoid them at all costs as I find they never fit quite right. To stop them sliding down (as the fabric is fairly soft) they need to be pretty close to the face which can result in eye lash tangle, or too loose and they can sort of sag. They are a great editorial look but way less practical in reality.

WHAT LENGTH BIRDCAGE VEIL SHOULD I HAVE?

I generally offer 3 different lengths. Eyebrow skimming that can comfortably be worn all day, nose skimming that can be folded back (as above) when you are ready but won’t stop you having a glass of fizz, it won’t pick up lipstick either! Finally there is chin length for full on impact and as with the nose length, can be pinned under to a shorter length.

DO YOU MAKE COLOURED BIRDCAGE VEILS?

Absolutely, everything is made to order so pretty much name your colour and I’ll sort it!

WHAT ERA IS A BIRDCAGE VEIL?

I’m a lover of historical dress and this answer isn’t strictly correct in those terms. Now a days it is interpretation of styling. I offer a wide range of birdcage veils, one with bows that are “cute” with 50s wedding dresses, elegantly structured feather ones perfect of either a 20’s or modern bride and one’s with more traditional combs or side pieces that work with more classic bridal gowns for girls who don’t want a big veil. I think the real answer is to wear what you love and ask me for advice if you are unsure.

CAN I WEAR A BIRDCAGE VEIL WITH SHORT HAIR?

Totally, I think they work brilliantly on a pixie crop, they can really add a feminine touch or soften a look if required. I’d make it for you on a velvet covered headband that toned to your hair colour so that it would sit discreetly in your hair.

WEARING A BIRDCAGE VEIL WITH GLASSES?

Of course you can, the only caution I’d urge is to weigh up the weight of the veiling fabric used to check that the balance is right against the glasses, I’m happy to chat this through direct as everyone has different glasses, from rimless to full on horn rimmed 50s one.

Creating statement millinery headpieces for the races

A slightly more indulgent post today, though I hope it helps you get to know me, what makes me tick, and maybe inspires you to trust me with a commission for your dream creation.

I love creating for clients, brides, mothers of the bride and groom, wedding guests and race goers alike. I love finding out about them and their specials days, what they will be wearing, understanding their personalities enough to ensure that what I am creating for them is going to be the perfect fit. This sort of work is hugely satisfying, knowing you’ve made someone happy, may have helped with confidence and realised the design in their imagination.

This possibly should be enough but there’s always are little nagging voice at the back of the creative brain that wants to play and work for myself too. Working as a creative every now and then I need an opportunity to let my hair down and experiment, with new materials, shapes, or techniques. It’s a chance to grow and develop and test myself. It pushes me outside of my comfort zone and the results may vary in success but they are usually well received (or end up dismantled and recycled). Creating for race going, fashion loving ladies is the perfect excuse to create.

Often times these experiments lead to a more restrained iteration appearing in my collections, ideas come from so many different places, through art, fashion, theatre and cinema from the late 1890’s to the 1950’s (wildly diverse eras though they are that fall in that period) tend to be my inspiration triggers. I’ve always been a bit of a contradiction. I’m shy but attracted to the theatrical and statement making. I’m drawn towards classic and traditional styles but then also the really abstract and wow.

Sometimes these pieces are in response to a request from a client but with a brief that is pretty loose and gives me fairly free reign to concoct to my hearts delight. I love these clients, though I’m not sure I could handle every client being like that, I’m frightened the ideas might dry up. This “playtime” keeps work fresh and helps me to continue loving what I do, which means not just me but all my clients benefit too, so win, win.

I’m in danger of waffling here though I did warn you this one may be a little more self indulgent that normal. Today I’d like to share some recent(ish) creations that fit this bill. I’ll be waving good bye to one of them next week though I need to create myself a similar replacement ready for my hire collection. I’m gradually building a collection of such pieces for when I formally launch the hire element of my business, though it has functioned unofficially for several years now.

As a general rule of thumb, I’ve found that when my husband “Hates” something rather than being oblivious to it, (he’s very accustomed to lots of strange things happening around him) I’m on to a winner. Each time I’ve posted such a piece I’ve had so much love and positive feedback and enquiries about it.

I THINK IT’S BETTER TO CREATE A STATEMENT THAT PROVOKES A REACTION, THAT CAN BE LOVED OR LOATHED, RATHER THAN SOMETHING SAFER, NICE BUT NOT MEMORABLE. DO YOU AGREE?

One last thing, again I’m being a contrary Mary. I love creating statement pieces but not if they stray in to novelty. I’m not sure if there’s a definition for where this invisible line is drawn but in my head I know where I see it. For me, a design needs to be coherent and “work”, not just be the biggest, the loudest, a collection of materials in matching colours piled together or the gimmicky type often witnessed at Ascot, such as a giant cup or tea or sandwich. It’s just a personal thing but that’s how I tick.

Which Side To Wear A Fascinator

Which Side Of My Head Should I Wear My Fascinator?

I’m going to try something a little different this week, I’m pushing my technical boundaries and integrating video, so that I can demonstrate more readily than just by writing. It would be great to get your feedback afterwards, I’m not psychic or a mind reader, but I do want to ensure that what I’m sharing with you is helpful and relevant.

The following advice is applicable whether the headpiece is a side tiara, birdcage veil, fascinator or asymmetrical headpiece.

SO, ARE YOU THINKING OF COMMISSIONING A HEADPIECE?

One of the first questions I will ask you, is…

“WHICH SIDE OF YOUR HEAD DO YOU WEAR YOUR PARTING?”

WEARING YOUR HEADPIECE

Once you’ve received your fascinator, please ensure that you wear it the correct way around. Below are two photographs that I hope illustrate this point.

In the first photograph you can see me wearing a fascinator the way it was intended to be worn, the detail is all facing the front.

In the second photograph I’ve worn it on my parting side but all the details are now facing the back of my head.

Had this piece been made for me to wear it would be a mirror image so that all the details face the front and it sits correctly on my parting. This is the advantage of having something custom made to order for you.

It’s more than likely that the events you are wearing something on your head to attend are going to be special days and the cameras are going to be out in force (whether we like them or not). You want to ensure that if you are going to be caught on camera that your headpiece is working in your favor.

Not only will you look a little daft wearing a headpiece back to front, it is utterly soul destroying to receive images (on rare occasions) from clients whom I’ve spent hours or days working hard and creating for, only to see it worn back to front on the special day. From a selfish perspective it doesn’t show my handiwork to it’s best advantage but as I’ve said, that’s selfish, what matters more is that it hasn’t showcased the client to their best potential.

Victoriana Jumpsuit, Phase Eight - Bridal Hair Accessories Styling Advice

I’M A BRIDE WEARING A JUMPSUIT FOR MY WEDDING, WHAT SORT OF HEADPIECE OR FASCINATOR SHOULD I CHOOSE ?

WHAT WILL SUIT THE VICTORIANA JUMPSUIT BY PHASE EIGHT?

Hello and welcome back to the second of my bridal style challenges. This time I’ve selected the Victoriana Jumpsuit by Phase Eight at a bargain price of £199.

I’ve noticed a shift in recent years with many brides opting for affordable high street bridal outfit options and accessorising them with pieces that can be worn again. It’s a regular event, talking with a bride who’s opted to invest in a pair of Jimmy Choo’s or Manolo Blahniks that they can wear repeatedly after the day.

I’ve selected three different ways to accessorise this jumpsuit. In my head this bride would be fashion conscious, stylish and happy to make things personal, rather than conform to a traditional bridal look. She could be any age, its more about the attitude.

This time I’m not going to make the suggestions based on different scenarios as I feel that the difference lies in personal choice rather than the type of wedding. A bride opting for a jumpsuit will already have a unique take on her day, and I’m making the sweeping assumption it’s more likely to be a more urban city vibe.

THE OUTFIT

VICTORIANA BRIDAL JUMPSUIT – PHASE EIGHT

Our best-selling Victoriana “Jumpsuit, redesigned for contemporary brides. Featuring statement frilled sleeves and a flattering waist tie, this smart wedding jumpsuit is finished with a detachable vintage-inspired belt, and an elegant V-back.” Phase Eight

I’ve got to confess that for me this belt just doesn’t work with this outfit, it’s missing the edge and style that the rest of the outfit has and would look far more at home on a conventional waisted bridal gown. I’ve nothing against the belt itself, however I’ve suggested alternatives that I think could change the look.

STYLING OPTION ONE

HEADPIECE – MOHINI – MODERN MUSE COLLECTION

The Mohini pearl headband is definitely for a fashionista bride, someone who is a statement maker and confident in her style. There are a range of colours it can be made in but I’ve based the styling around the gold sample. The velvet colour is selected to tone with the bride’s hair colour and hand stitched in place so that the piece wears seamlessly in the hair. I’ve found two belt options here, each would work well, both have the metallic thing going on but everyone’s tastes are different. These Kurt Geiger sandals are definitely and investment you wouldn’t regret, they won’t date quickly and are wearable time and time again. I think the chunkier heel works well with the solid wide leg trouser.

STYLING OPTION TWO

HEADPIECE – METROPOLIS – DIVA COLLECTION

The Metropolis is all about modern and stylish. There are three Metropolis headpieces to choose from, this one, a simple headband and a larger statement piece, any of which would work equally well. As with the Mohini, the velvet ribbon is altered to suit. This piece is entirely hand beaded so any alterations you wish can be made. In all honesty I couldn’t promise to make it 100% identical though I’d do my best. Metropolis has all the sparkle of “bridal” but design wise is a complete opposite. I think the belt options are far more suited to a modern fresh look, they are wearable again after the wedding, as are the shoes. I think they reflect the colours and tones of the headpiece well but I really chose them as they look comfortable (in so far as high heeled sandals can be).

STYLING OPTION THREE

HEADPIECE – ADELE – JOLI CHAPEAU COLLECTION

I think the Adele provides a chic option, with the veiling adding a nod to identifying the wearer as the bride. It’s not to angular so sits well against the ruffles over the shoulders. This could be made in any colour your wish. You could stick for all ivory but I’d be sorely tempted to use a colour block contrast. I’ve selected a contrasting belt and (with much hesitation as everything inside me is screaming don’t match too much) selected some matching shoes. I’ve selected the shoes as I think they’d be a great option for a tall bride with a shorter groom, I talk to a lot of brides with this concern. I’ve also chosen the sandals as I’d love to see clashing and contrasting highlights. What colours would you choose?

THE OTHER DETAILS

JEWELLERY

No necklace required with ruffle shoulders, high neck and a headpiece. Possibly a cuff as long as it sits comfortably alongside the belt. Earrings, keep simple and not too big, unless you decide against the whole headpiece thing and then I’d go for it.

HAIR

These pieces will wear with any hair cut, short of long. If it is longer, I’d recommend an up do to draw the hair away from the face and create an elegant or fresher look. Long hair a high neckline and a headpiece could swamp your face.

DO YOUR PLAN ON WEARING A BRIDAL FASCINTOR FOR YOUR WEDDING?

ARE YOU UNDECIDED BETWEEN A BRIDAL FASCINATOR AND A TIARA (OR HEADPIECE) WITH VEIL ALTERNATIVE?

LET’S LOOK AT SOME OF THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU

Have you decided what you plan to wear in your hair for your big day or is it still a matter for debate? Perhaps I could help you weigh up your options if you may be considering a millinery headpiece rather than the traditional hair accessories worn with a veil. I don’t just make tiaras, headbands, hair combs, hair pins, hair vines etc. Using my millinery skills I offer a beautiful range of bridal fascinators, cocktail hats, decorative birdcage veil headpieces and statement headwear.

WHAT TYPE OF WEDDINGS OR BRIDE SUIT A BRIDAL FASCINATOR?

Before answering this question I should clarify that there are exceptions to every rule, every bride is an individual but for the purposes of blog posts like this I can only speak in broader terms. Ok, with that disclaimer out of the way, here goes.

In my experience there are broadly speaking, 5 different types of brides and weddings where the bridal fascinator works well and suits the wearer and occasion perfectly. Let me introduce you to some of my past clients to illustrate.

THE CITY BRIDE

Manhatten has got to be the ultimate city wedding destination, what a fabulous back drop. Have you ever been? I loved it but would love to revisit. The Jardin fascinator was the ultimate romantic finishing touch for this stunning bride and her Suzanne Neville gown.

The Petite Jardin was the perfect fit for this beautiful Italian bride for her intimate promenade wedding in Verona (the home of Romeo and Juliet). Gorgeous and romantic but also practical and comfortable for her to move around in and wear outdoors.

This uber elegant lady chose the Diana birdcage veil headpiece for her chic and stylish city wedding in Rome. Such a stunning elegant understated gown was a perfect foil for the dramatic veil, just perfect.

The Petite Jardin was also the fascinator of choice for this lady for her city wedding, I think it was in Sheffield but the memory isn’t what it was. It would have been wrong to cover the cowl back, and back necklace with a long veil, the birdcage veil headpiece works perfectly.

This beautiful bride ordered a bespoke fascinator for her wedding. She wanted a piece that echoed her coloured sash and gold jewellery and referenced her Sinagpore roots, for her elegant wedding at the Hurlingham Club in London.

Although you can’t see in this black and white photograph this brides knee length dress was stunning. It featured a vibrant coloured purple fabric on the reverse of the ruffle which was reflected in her flowers. She chose the Vivienne fascinator in ivory to complete this stylish city look. I think she looks stunning an remains a firm favourite of mine after all this time.

Finally, the last city bride selected the Nina birdcage veil bow fascinator, it was chic, sassy and stylish and perfectly fitted the vibe and look for her cool but fun urban wedding.

THE VINTAGE BRIDE

These brides all rocked 50’s inspired vintage tea length dresses and I love the way they are all so different and individual. It proves that whether you are at a pretty barn accompanied by your pup in the west country or rocking your stuff in front of Anish Kapoor’s Bean in Chicago, collapsed on the steps of a town hall or at a summer garden party wedding, the birdcage style fascinator definitely contributes to the fun of the day.

Clockwise (if on a PC or a slightly different order on a mobile but I’m sure you’ll suss it)…

The Milly spotty bow birdcage veil, next, the Nina bow birdcage veil, third the Betty veiled pill box fascinator and finally the DIana birdcage veil.

THE OLDER (OR 2ND TIME AROUND) BRIDE

Whether you opt for an ivory gown or a smart outfit for your wedding, it is your wedding day whatever your age and the circumstances and most brides still want to wear a headpiece but for my “older” (I’m not saying old) brides a tiara and veil option is just plain wrong. They invariable haven’t got long hair to dress with combs or pins, and they are often more confident in themselves and a bridal fascinator headpiece provides the perfect finish. They can transform pretty and girly in to ladylike and elegant.

Clockwise…

The stunning lady in lilac flew in from Dubai (I think it was) for a smart city ceremony in Edinburgh. The lady in orange opted for a very small and intimate affair in Brighton, just themselves and 2 guests. The lady in peacock and tweed had smart ceremony in the beautiful university town of Cambridge. Their fascinators all elevated their already smart outfits just that step further to mark the occasion. The elegant lady on the steps with the beautifully fitted lace gown opted for the veiled Belle to complete her look. The lady in the Ian Stuart gown sported this bespoke pill box base veiled bridal fascinator to perfection, just the perfect balance of elegance and sass. Finally the lady with the tiered dress married at a beautiful country house in New Zealand, proving fascinators really can be worn successfully anywhere.

THE QUIRKY BRIDE

I love the sheer variety of brides I get to meet in this line of work, every one is different. I don’t conform to the business rules that dictate to my niche customer, I want every customer to be able to live their dream and play a part in helping them. The lady on the carousel opted for an Odette feather fascinator to wear in front of her short veil, perfect for her fun and colourful celebration. The lady in period costume happened to be an old school class mate. She wanted a sumptuous elaborate fascinator for her carnival themed wedding in Venice (she fell in love with the place when we both visited on an A level art history study week). I wish I had a colour image to share as they were magnificent. The other two ladies opted for the Papillon butterfly fascinator, from my millinery collections, remember any of these can be adapted to bridal, not just those in my bridal collections. Both their days scream fun, individuality and joy.

THE JUST BECAUSE IT WORKS BRIDE

H’mm I hear you say, not strictly a category but bear with me.

Ok, so I need a catch all. These ladies really have very little in common, except to say they are brides who have their own clear identities and personalities and for whom wearing a bridal fascinator was the perfect choice.

Joanna had a bespoke headpiece made from off cuts of her bespoke gown with floral motifs to reflect her dress detailing.

This stunning bride in Brazil opted for a full and lavish fascinator, the light fabrics kept is wearable and balanced the voluminous ruffled skirt on her tiny frame.

The feathered headband oozed vintage style for the bride on the vintage bus, her wedding was at one of my teenage haunts, up on the hill tops above the RIpponden valley, it’s had a serious face lift since my Saturday nights there.

Navy blue feathers to compliment Sophie’s navy blue feather wrap and midnight navy gown for her intimate autumnal lake district wedding were just enough.

The veilied Belle with the traditional strapless gown demonstrates perfectly that a tiara and veil aren’t the only option, the fullness of the fascinator reflecting beautifully the fullness of the skirt.

Last but by no means least this stylish London bride selected a statement bespoke fascinator to complete her look. The exquisite lace and detailing in her dress would have been lost under a veil but the scale of the wedding demanded something that made an impression.

I’M A MOTHER OR THE BRIDE, WHAT SORT OF HAT OR FASCINATOR SHOULD I CHOOSE ?

WHAT WILL SUIT THE INES DRESS BY L K BENNETT?

The great dilemma that faces most of my millinery clients is simple… “What should I put on my head?”. The dresses and outfits are generally an easier choice, after all we wear clothes every day but headwear is a different matter. In these posts I try to demystify the process.

L K Bennett dresses and shoes have always proved to be very popular with my clients so for this week’s post I’ve selected a dress from their new collection for late summer, early autumn. Although it is long sleeved, the fine light fabric won’t be too hot.

THE DRESS

INES - L K BENNETT

“In an American vintage archive print from the 1940s, meet the Ines dress. Crafted from a light and luxurious silk-blend fabric with gold jacquard spot detail, this feminine style has a round, gathered neck, long, sheer sleeves and a floaty midi skirt.” L K Bennett

STYLING OPTION ONE

SCENARIO - SMALL & INTIMATE

The Bride & Groom have decided that they want the wedding to be a small affair with just close family and friends (20 or so guests), an increasingly popular option currently. Working with lots of mothers of the bride I understand that this creates a dilemma, it is your daughter’s wedding and a day when you want to make a real effort for her but also balance this with respecting her wishes for the day. This means keeping the details appropriately special without stealing the limelight. In all likelihood, aside from the bride you will be the only other person in a headpiece.

HEADPIECE - ODILE

The Odile headpiece is understated, elegant and provides just that touch of detail. It is easy to wear on a band (my bands are comfortable and adjustable to ensure that). The feathers are given that extra special lift with the addition of bead tipped stems. The Swarovski crystal and pearl detailing set the design apart from a small high street piece.

I’d make on gold wire and probably recommend going for the red or mustard tones as the dominant colour, dependent on the wearers colouring and preferences.

STYLING OPTION TWO

SCENARIO - MEDIUM SIZED WEDDING OR PETITE CLIENT

The Bride & Groom have decided that they want the wedding to be a medium sized wedding, 60-80 guests, or alternatively I’m catering for a a very petite lady who needs to be careful with her choice of head wear so it doesn’t overwhelm her. As with the small wedding this means keeping the details appropriately special without stealing the limelight. In this instance there maybe more people wearing headpieces but you don’t feel that a full blown traditional hat is you, or appropriate.

HEADPIECE - ARABELLA

The Arabella cocktail hat is perfect for all ladies but doesn’t overwhelm petite ladies who could also wear it to a bigger event. Pheasant curls, coque (the ones with diamond cut ends) and hackle feathers are styled elegantly on a sinamay base with narrow sinamay ribbon detail. The addition of the beading gives a special finish and the beads can compliment the clients jewellery choice if required. It’s neat, fashionable and won’t overwhelm the wearers face, despite being worn forwards.

I think it would be best in one of the contrasting colours and use the blue as a highlight if the client wanted the blue, I prefer things to compliment rather than be too “matchy”.

STYLING OPTION THREE

SCENARIO - LARGE WEDDING OR FLAMBOYANT CLIENT

The Bride & Groom have decided that they want to go all out, there are a lot of guests and the venue may be quite grand. This calls for a headpiece that will be visible, that ticks the “Mother of the Bride” box but that will also be comfortable to wear. In a sea of heads you need to be visible, not in a limelight stealing way but so that you feel appropriately attired to the scale of the occasion though not so much that you do a “My Fair Lady” and block guests view at the ceremony.

HEADPIECE - TIFFANY

The Tiffany headpiece is perfect for all ladies for a bigger event (or those who love to make a statement at a smaller one). Pheasant curls in abundance make this a real statement but one that is easy and comfortable to wear. Practical (that doesn’t look like practicality) is key to being able to both look fabulous and just get on with enjoying the day. The addition of the beading if desired would give an even more spectacular finish. I’ve made this recommendation as despite being worn forwards it won’t overwhelm the wearer. I personally feel that when an outfit has a high neckline it’s best not to box in the face too much that it is lost as the focus. This matters less at the races when it’s all about the hat but at a wedding, it’s all about the people.

As with the Arabella, I think it would be best in one of the contrasting colours and use the blue as a highlight if the client wanted the blue, I prefer things to compliment rather than be too “matchy”.

THE OTHER DETAILS

JEWELLERY

I tend to find that mothers of the bride have existing sentimental jewellery that they wish to wear so my only comments on this would be that this dress doesn’t need a necklace due to the high neckline. At a very dressy event if could carry some large short string pearls possibly but I think for a lot of ladies with the patterned colourful fabric it could be too much. A pendant and chain would be lost. A bracelet won’t be visible with the long sleeve. Earrings will of course work but I’d be tempted to keep to some sort of stud or only a short dangle that just lips the edge of the ear.

HAIR

These pieces will wear with any hair cut. Generally I find that mothers of the bride have shorter hair but if it is longer, I’d recommend an up do to draw the hair away from the face and create an elegant line. Long hair a high neckline and a headpiece could swamp your face.

SHOES

These are very much a personal choice but I’ve selected several pairs from the L K Bennett website that I think would be fabulous.

Modern Muse Collection, Timeless Modern Tiaras

MODERN MUSE - Designed for the Modern Fashion Conscious Bride!

I’m excited to introduce the new “Modern Muse” collection. If you’re a style conscious bride seeking new, contemporary designs then look no further. These designs are absolutely on trend but won’t date in your wedding photographs as time passes either. They have been carefully created as both modern and timeless pieces that aren’t a disposable fashion fad. They are perfect for both rock chicks and modern princesses (think Meghan) alike.

INSPIRATION

This collection started with idea that emerged from a good natter with makeup artist and friend, Victoria Farr. We were talking all things bride style and identified a lack of choice in contemporary tiaras for brides who want to embrace being modern women on their wedding days, rather than conforming to stereotypes. Victoria has many very style conscious (not fashion victim) brides. They are confident in their skin, fashion aware, discerning women. Beautiful as they are, flower crowns and whimisical wispy hair vines aren’t for everyone but a quick look online at current inspiration reveals a market awash with them. I wanted to create something bolder (but not scene stealing – the bride herself should do that herself), edgier (but that could still be romantic), grown up (though not completely detatched from the “inner girl”), fashionista friendly (but still timeless so that your wedding photographs don’t scream a certain year) and this is the result, we hope you enjoy!

THE MUSES

Muse definition? It means a person — especially a woman — who is a source of artistic inspiration.

The collection is named “Modern Muse” after the 10 inspiring beautiful ladies that have modelled for me (and Victoria on shoots) one is Victoria herself (she didn’t know that was going to happen). These ladies are all strong independent women all forging unique lives for themselves, each uniquely talented and all an absolute pleasure to work with. They are professional musicians (pianist, violinist, singer), business women, a teacher, a designer, mothers, a blogger, a florist, international makeup artist and so much more besides. They’ve lived in Latvia, Australia, Tanzania, New York, London, Newcastle and of course Hull, definitely inspiring ladies.

THE DESIGNS – Modern Headband Tiaras

The collection comprises of diamante and pearl edits. The pieces are all headband tiaras designed to be worn on an Alice band so that the tiara is worn halo style, rather than tilted on an angle as a conventional traditional tiara. All the pieces are mounted on hair bands carefully covered in hand stitched velvet ribbon, providing both additional comfort and a “Luxe” premium finish. The ribbon can be match (fairly closely – a wide variety of colours available) to your hair colour, all you need to do is to indicate on the order form if you order on line or discuss with me if you order direct. There are samples of all the pieces available to try if you are unsure about your design choice.

HOW TO WEAR? WHAT HAIRSTYLES WILL WORK?

This collection is particularly flexible, not in terms of where and how it can be worn, but they will wear with absolutely any hair style I can think of, Pixie cuts, hair up or hair down and everything in between. They can be worn with a sleek centre parting or a fringe, perfectly coiffed flawless hair or loose and natural locks. Possibly bob length hair worn down and sleek is the least suitable match but even then there are possibilities.

PHOTOSHOOT

It was another outing for the "Dream Team", yes, you know the script by now.... incredible photographer Ally Byrom and fabulous make up artist, Victoria Farr (read my other "Design story" posts to find out more). I don’t know where my business would be without these two fabulous women!

Sophie Allen was our model, she’s such a professional, uber cool, lady to work with and an all round gorgeous girlie! Perfect for our fresh, “unbridey” bridal look.

It was our third trip to Saltmarshe Hall, an elegant 19th century coutry house on the banks of the river Ouse in East Yorkshire. It stands in 17acres of beautiful grounds and gardens, which looked pretty through the windows but sadly we didn’t have chance to explore this time, typically the weather was gorgeous, just because this was an indoor shoot.

It was our second opportunity to raid Hayley’s collection of exquisite Rolling in Roses dresses, we chose the Talitha gown with the amazing lazer cut sleaves. She also has an incredible range of original vintage wedding dresses for your delectation in her York boutique, Glory Days. The utterly fabulous (and I don’t use that term lightly) Chenca of Ritva Westenius London, kindly supplied her bias cut slipper silk “Ibiza” gown which fit Sophie like a dream.

We were accompanied by my “helpful assistant”, daughter Frances who was a great runner and cartwheeler throughout.
