A Parisian Surprise

During my recent trip to Paris, I was greeted with a wonderful surprise—it snowed… and it wasn’t just a dusting! Usually, winters in Paris are not quite as cold as they are back home in New England, but this January, Paris had other plans.

Snow in Paris isn’t an every-year occurrence. You might hear of a light sprinkle now and then, but never in all my years traveling to France have I seen the city truly blanketed in white as it was this year. In fact, a friend later told me they hadn’t seen snow like this in nearly 15 years.

I first saw the snow after a quick rendezvous in the 8th arrondissement, when I stepped outside into what felt like a winter wonderland! Because Paris isn’t used to snowfall, much of the city’s transportation went into a bit of a tailspin. So, I decided to walk home to the Left Bank, and I’m so glad I did.

A Winter Wonderland

The scene was magical. People were out everywhere, savoring this rare and fleeting moment. I took it all in as I walked, marveling at the beauty of the city I love so much, now softened and transformed, covered in white.

What struck me most was the pure, unfiltered joy that filled the streets. Children were making snowmen, tossing snowballs, and laughing without a care. There was a shared sense of wonder, as if the entire city had paused together to enjoy something magical. I caught myself smiling the whole way home, thinking I had never believed Paris could look any more beautiful! But somehow, it did.

Milestones

This past year we celebrated several meaningful milestones including the exciting unveiling of a container filled with French treasures and our very first French Fête at the shop, surrounded by fellow Francophiles.

We also hosted two unforgettable trips to France—our Antique Buying Tour as well as our first Parisian Experience Tour—each one filled with discovery, laughter, and lifelong memories.

We loved bringing floral artistry to your screens with not one, but two segments on WBZ‑TV and were deeply honored to be featured in publications we admire so much, including Northshore Magazine and Yankee Magazine, just to name a few. See our media page for other Les Fleurs press features.

I also had the pleasure of being featured on the Classic & Curious Podcast, sharing stories, inspiration, and a lifelong love of all things French.

And to top it off, our Parisian apartment was featured on Homeworthy, which felt incredibly special.

Book Happenings & Workshops

Behind the scenes, so much creative work was blooming as I began Book #2 with my publisher, Rizzoli. Traveling through Provence and Burgundy shooting photos was an experience that filled my heart and creative soul.

2025 brought the first French Blooms wall calender (for 2026), which is still available on our website!

French Blooms book signings and floral demonstrations continued in 2025 at the Talbot County Garden Symposium in Maryland and the Sasqua Garden Club in Southport Connecticut, to name a few.

I was thrilled to be invited to teach floral masterclasses at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston during their Art in Bloom event, and then at the Cal-a-vie Spa in Vista, California during their Garden Week.

We also hosted beautiful local gatherings with Studio Carta and Ivy Paperie.

And on a very personal note, one of the most joyful moments of the year was when our oldest son got engaged to his love! A reminder that while business milestones matter, it’s family and love that ground everything we do.

Am I forgetting things? Most likely. But that’s the beauty of a full, meaningful year—it overflows.

The holidays have always held a special place in my heart, from the traditions passed down through my family to the little rituals I’ve created over the years as a shopkeeper, mother, and designer. Many of you have asked how I decorate and celebrate Christmas at home so I thought I would share a few of my own Christmas traditions…

When do you start decorating for the holidays, especially as a busy shopkeeper?

If you know me, you know the shop is always decorated early. We start changing over the store long before December, with all the Fleurettes helping out to get the shop ready for our annual Holiday Open House in early November.

My home is usually last on the list, but my goal is always the same: get it done before the boys come home from college and where they live. Nothing makes me happier than having the house ready for them, warm and inviting.

What fragrances say “Christmas” to you?

Fresh greens at the shop, simmering citrus on the stove, beeswax candles, and paperwhites blooming… honestly, all of it.

During the holidays, I try to bring as many natural elements as possible into my home, including fresh garland strung throughout the house, and fresh pine and eucalyptus wreaths I make each year to hang on my kitchen windows. Nothing says Christmas like the scent of fresh-cut evergreen, beginning at the entryway and continuing throughout the house.

Family Limoncello

Is there a French holiday tradition you follow at home?

Although France has my heart in many ways, Christmas is when my Italian roots shine brightest. Each year we make my nono’s (grandfather’s) limoncello recipe. We start on Thanksgiving night by peeling the lemons, then we have a bottling party the week before Christmas. This year I think we’re up to 75 bottles! We give them to loved ones and friends, sharing a bit of our heritage, truly made from the heart.

Maybe that’s my French side too…celebrating with good food, good drink, and good friends.

Traditional Italian Christmas Eve

What’s one Christmas tradition from your childhood that you still carry with you today?

As a child, the Italian side of my family always celebrated Christmas Eve with the Feast of the Seven Fishes. It’s a sacred tradition I continue with my family, and it is—without question—my favorite night of the year. Everyone gathers at our home, and we laugh, sing, dance, and cook into the wee hours. It’s loud, joyful, and full of love…just the way it should be.

Continuing this ritual brings me right back to my childhood, watching my mom, aunts, grandmother, and grandfather in the kitchen, feeling that warmth only family can give.

What does Christmas morning look like in your home?

Christmas morning is always a slow, cozy, stay-in-your-pj’s kind of day. After our big night of celebrating, we usually wake up late, make a big brunch, and open gifts with the fire roaring. It’s exactly the kind of New England Christmas I always dreamed of having with my family.

What is your favorite holiday tradition with your customers or community?

That would have to be our annual Holiday Open House! The preparation is a team effort and a bonding experience with all the Fleurettes, and the outcome is always worth the work.

I love seeing familiar faces returning year after year for our Open House, whether looking to design a table centerpiece, put together a special gift basket, or decorate a tree with glass ornaments and ribbon. Hearing stories and watching people walk through the shop with that spark of joy remind me exactly why I do what I do. It’s more than retail; it’s about connection.

What is your favorite way to slow down and savor the season, even during the busiest weeks?

Even when the shop is bustling and life is full, I try to carve out little pockets of calm with a quiet cup of tea in the morning before the shop opens, a bit of yoga when I wake up and again before bed, or a good book on the couch, “unplugging” at the end of the day. It is these tiny rituals that keep me grounded so I can give my best to everyone around me.

Traditions make Christmas memorable, but the simple act of being together is what matters most. We’re all so busy going in different directions but at Christmastime, everyone comes home. For me, that will always be the greatest gift.

A Creative Friendship Born in the Most Unexpected Moment

It’s funny how the universe works.

Have you ever met someone and felt an instant connection, and wondered if it was just a coincidence, or maybe karma that brought you together? That’s what happened with watercolor artist and illustrator, Ann Kissane Engelhart.

I first “met” Ann many years ago during the lockdown, when her artwork suddenly appeared on my phone. Maybe I was scrolling too much on one of those long days… or maybe it was a little nudge from the universe. All I know is that I instantly felt that familiar spark. It was my admiration for her talent and our shared world of artistry that pulled me right in; I loved her work from the very first glance.

A New Collaboration

After the holidays last year, I kept thinking about her. I had long imagined collaborating with an artist whose work felt both French and deeply poetic, someone who could capture the charm of the garden world I adore. So, I finally reached out… and I’m so glad I did.

For our first collaboration, we created the new French Garden Collection—a limited series of hand-painted ceramic ornaments designed exclusively for Les Fleurs, which we began carrying in our shop this holiday season. Every ornament is hand-painted by Ann with such intention and care, making each piece truly one of a kind. What’s nice about the flat profile is that they can also be hung on a mantle or window, displayed like little works of art!

The Iconic French Greenhouse

One particular design stands out for me: the French greenhouse. It reminds me of the many châteaux I’ve visited over the years—with old glass windows, timeworn ironwork, and that sense of history tucked among the trees. I loved it so much that we even incorporated a greenhouse into our Les Fleurs logo, and sprinkled it throughout our branding. It just felt right… almost like a little piece of my heart captured in her artwork. And yes…I’ll definitely be hanging one on my own tree this year.

A Little More About Ann

In one of our conversations, Ann shared more about her creative path. Here’s a bit of her story…

• She has wanted to be an artist for as long as she can remember.

• She studied Fine Arts and painting at Queens College (CUNY), continued both undergrad and graduate work there, and later completed post-graduate illustration studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

• She has taught art at every level—from elementary school to high school, and even taught watercolor painting at St. John’s University. Today she offers workshops and teaches in her home studio on Long Island.

• She is currently working on her 12th illustrated children’s book.

• She paints on porcelain and vintage ceramics using a French brand of paint which becomes permanent when fired. She began making ornaments two years ago and created this French garden-inspired collection exclusively for Les Fleurs.

It has been such a joy to collaborate with Ann. What began as a quiet moment during lockdown—a simple scroll—turned into something really special.

Setting the Table

There’s a particular calm that settles over the house when you’re setting a Christmas table—right before everyone arrives, when everything is still and waiting. That’s the feeling I wanted to capture with this tablescape design—something soft, wintery, and a little nostalgic.

Of course, the floral centerpiece is always my starting point. For this table, I gathered winter-white blooms such as roses, anemones, and a few stems of delphinium, and mixed them with bits of evergreen. Red berry branches trail across the table, adding a hint of holiday color without overwhelming the soft palette.

An embroidered tablecloth brings texture to the table with a sense of heritage. If you have special linens passed down from your mother or grandmother, this is the perfect moment to bring them out, adding subtle memories to the celebration.

The vintage French ironstone plates might be my favorite detail. Their faded red toile transfer designs bring a gentle warmth to the winter whites, and they feel right at home on the embroidered tablecloth.

finishing touches

The finishing touches include tall taper candles to add height and draw the eye upward. Silver and crystal pieces scattered throughout the table aren’t there to make a statement; they simply blend in and bring a little shimmer when hit by the light. Finally, at each place setting, a tiny glass tree brings a playful moment which guests always seem to notice.

Holiday Decor Ideas

With our shop filled with autumn florals and tabletop items from France, I was inspired to style a French tablescape—on a vintage farm table, of course!

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or family gathering, here are a few table-setting ideas to add warmth and embrace the essence of the season. Think warm, earthy tones, with a variety of tableware, napkins and candles. Mix and match coordinating pieces for your own unique design.

Read on for ideas on how to recreate a similar fall tablescape at home…

1. French Ironstone Terre de Fer

I’m always searching for antique pottery in France, and French ironstone terre de fer is one of my favorites. The old-world craftsmanship and charming designs with botanical motifs, landscapes, and birds make these pieces truly unique. Learn more about terre de fer in this blog post.

While I used one plate style on this table, you could add interest “mixing and matching” plates with different patterns. Use a collection of plates, platters, and tureens in coordinating colors to add a whimsical feel to the table.

2. Antique French Silverware

Throughout the brocantes in France you can always find an assortment of vintage and antique silver-plated forks, knives and spoons. My favorites are those with monogram engravings, telling a story from long ago. To verify if a utensil was made in France, look for makers’ marks on the front “bowl” or blade, where French silversmiths often pressed their hallmarks and the silver content. No matter the pattern, mixing silverware is a fun way to add interest to your place settings.

3. Linen Napkins

The natural look of linen underneath silver flatware can add a rustic French-country feel to a place setting. For this table, I chose linen napkins with fall leaves and botanical designs in a warm color palette. A mix of linens in solid neutrals or bright fall colors would also work. Napkins are an easy way to get creative, tying them with twine or using fall-themed napkin rings!

4. Taper Candles

Candles always add a warm glow to a table. As you can see, I used a variety of taper candles with different shapes and textures, in similar tones of rust and orange.

5. Limoges Porcelain

For contrast to make the warm fall colors pop, I added a crisp white element to the table. While vintage white ironstone pieces would have been beautiful, I decided to use candle holders and bowls in white porcelain, handcrafted by French artisan Alix D. Reynis. The simple designs of these pieces make them perfect for any occasion, decor, and color scheme.

6. Glassware

To add a glass component to the table, I chose vintage goblets from France with a frosted texture and an art deco bubble-glass base. For a more formal design, mix and match multiple glasses for water and wine at each place setting. Using tinted or clear glass stemware to reflect the candle flames will enhance the glow at the table.

7. Floral Centerpieces

Of course, being a florist, I had to add lots of blooms! Whether a gorgeous statement piece or simple scattered blooms, flowers always add the finishing touch to a table. For this long table, I created multiple floral centerpieces featuring our locally-sourced dahlias and hydrangeas from my garden!

More fall decorating inspiration in the blog…

When I was in Provence this past July, I had the pleasure of visiting Moulin Castelas, an olive grove nestled along the southern slopes of the Alpilles. You may wonder why I’m telling you about it now. Well, it’s because the fall season is actually the best time to visit!

Artisan Craftsmanship

From mid-October to late November, the olives are harvested and turned into oil. It’s the best time to visit because you can watch the entire process unfold. There’s a fascinating, almost hypnotic rhythm—from the moment the olives are picked, cleaned, and crushed, to the pièce de resistance, when the golden oil flows into the stainless steel tanks.

A Bit of History

The story of Castelas began in 1997, when the owners Catherine and Jean-Benoît Hugues fell in love with a grove of old olive trees. Today, Domaine Castelas spans over 110 hectares and produces oils under the prestigious AOP Vallée des Baux de Provence.

AOP stands for Appellation d’Origine Protégée, a French certification that guarantees the product is locally grown and crafted according to traditional methods. In other words, you're tasting the real deal: olive oil that’s deeply rooted in the land where it originated.

The Tasting

After viewing the process of making the oil, the visit would not be complete without an olive oil tasting, and trust me, it’s worth lingering for the experience. I was amazed at how different each of the oils tasted. There are bold, tapenade-like blends and light, fruity ones which could be drizzled over ice cream!

Beyond the tasting room is their boutique, where they offer much more than a vast variety of olive oils. They also sell several lines of bath & body products made with their Provence olive oil, and kitchen items made from olive wood, both of which we carry on our website!

Shop Provence Olive Oil & Olive Wood Products at Les Fleurs

In an atelier tucked away in a quiet Parisian courtyard, Cécile Viarouge tenderly arranges a set of timeworn ceramic plates. Each one is delicately floral, softly faded, and deeply storied. Through her work as an antique dealer and decorator under the name Blanche Patine (White Patina), Cécile has not only revived interest in 19th-century French ironstone (terre de fer), but she’s also become one of its most devoted guardians.

With her first book, Terre de Fer: Collections de Céramiques Françaises, Cécile opens the doors to her universe. When she first began researching ironstone out of personal curiosity, she quickly realized how little had been documented. Books were scarce, reference materials even more so. So, she created her own book—a visual archive and a love letter in one—so that all she’s learned over the years would continue to live on.

A Chat with Cécile

We sat down with Cécile to talk about how her passion for terre de fer began, and why these humble handmade ceramics still matter today.

Can you share how you became an antique dealer?  

I studied art history and came from the art market world. I used to work in a gallery. I’ve always had a deep love for objects just as they are, for their stories, their memories, knowing who made them, where they come from, and trying to understand all those things.

What drew you to terre de fer specifically?

It all started about ten years ago. I’m also a painter, so I have a genuine love for the decoration on these ironstone pieces, the floral motifs, as well as the raw, natural feel of the ceramic. I’m also drawn to their imperfections: the little misalignments in the design, the faded prints… Those flaws completely charmed me.

At the time, no one was interested in ironstone. When I first began, I was one of the first to really speak about these pieces. Where I found them, people were throwing them away. There was truly no interest in them. But I completely fell in love and decided to become their “maman,” to care for them and share them with the world.

If people were throwing them away, what made you think these pieces were going to come back? We’ve certainly noticed an increased interest in transferware pieces over the last couple of years.

There’s definitely a kind of global trend happening now, it’s incredible. Hundreds of antique dealers are now drawn to these pieces. But there’s a mix of approaches, and that’s what makes it beautiful. Each of us brings our own sensibility to it. People now come to me specifically for my sensibility, my little eye for these pieces. I’ve become something of a decorator over time.

Can you tell us a bit more about the French ironstone manufacturers?

In my shop, I focus exclusively on French ceramics. Initially, this type of ceramic originated from England, but by the end of the 18th century, French manufacturers had begun producing it for a wider audience. It became everyday tableware, used both for simple meals and more elaborate ones.

Everyone owned some, from working-class families to the bourgeoisie and even the aristocracy. At the time, all French manufacturers were producing ironstone to suit different markets and customers.

You can see it in the quality of the glaze, the clay, the details in the design, and, of course, the manufacturer itself. For instance, pieces from Gien or Creil & Montereau were mainly intended for the bourgeois class, while pieces from Saint-Amand were more accessible and affordable. So not all ironstone is necessarily of great elegance or rarity.

Is there a motif or manufacturer in particular that you love?

I really can’t choose, and I get asked that a lot lately. People will say, “If there were an earthquake and you could only keep one piece, which one would you save?” But it’s impossible. I genuinely believe each piece is a little treasure.

That said, I do have a real fondness for certain manufacturers, like Jules Vieillard, or the houses of Gien, Creil & Montereau, Choisy-le-Roi, and Salins.

It’s easier for me to say which ones I feel less drawn to. For example, Saint-Amand often has a whiter base and slightly less refined patterns. Same with Sarreguemines. But as for a single motif I love most? I just can’t narrow it down.

Provence is one of the most beloved regions in the South of France—and it’s easy to see why. With its rolling lavender fields, golden stone buildings, sun-drenched landscapes, and timeless villages that seem pulled from a postcard, it’s a place that stirs the senses and soothes the soul.

In early July, I had the chance to return to Provence to shoot photos for my second book. While I can’t reveal more about that project just yet, I couldn’t resist sharing a glimpse at the beautiful landscapes and picturesque villages from the trip. Read on to learn about five of my favorite villages—each one full of charm, character, and that unmistakable Provençal magic.

Lourmarin

Lourmarin is full of character and color. Visit on a Friday to experience its bustling market where locals sell everything from seasonal produce, olives, herbs de Provence, ceramics, and soaps. After a walk through the market, take a stroll into town where you’ll find lively cafes and quaint boutiques. Be sure to stop by Franc 1884, a charming shop where they make stunning lavender wands, which make for elegant souvenirs!

The village is also home to several art galleries. During my last trip, I picked up a painting by Thierry Marchal, a modern-day artist who captures the beauty of the region in his work. You can learn more about his Lourmarin gallery at Galerie Marchal. 

Gordes

Perched dramatically on a hilltop, Gordes is one of the most iconic villages in Provence, and for good reason. The views overlooking the Luberon valley from the top are breathtaking, especially as the sun begins to dip.

Wander along the narrow and winding cobblestone streets lined with inviting boutiques and art galleries. It’s one of those places where getting lost is part of the charm.

Isle sur la Sorgue

Known as the “antique capital” of Provence, Isle sur la Sorgue comes alive on weekends. During its famed antique markets, you'll find numerous courtyards filled with hundreds of vendors and vintage treasures. I always recommend visiting on a Saturday or Sunday when the markets are in full swing.

The old water wheels along the Sorgue River canals are another sight to see as they turn slowly, giving the whole place a gentle rhythm.

Saint-Remy

It’s easy to see why this village remains a favorite among travelers and locals alike. Saint-Rémy blends Roman ruins, winding streets, and a vibrant art scene. It was once Van Gogh’s stomping ground, and there are walking tours to the many places he painted throughout the town. There's also a lovely olive grove called Moulin Castelas, which is just 10 minutes away and worth a visit.

Eygalières

Tiny, quiet, and tucked away in the heart of the Alpilles, Eygalières feels like a kept secret. What I love about the town is that it hasn’t been overtaken by tourism. In the summer, you’ll often hear live music drifting through the narrow streets where many local artists open up their studios. During my last visit, I grabbed a bite at Bistrot Aubergine, a cozy spot that serves fresh, seasonal dishes. I highly recommend it!

Gilded Secrets of the Opéra Garnier

Have you ever had the chance to visit the famous Opéra Garnier in Paris? If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it on your next trip to Paris. Merely stepping inside will leave you speechless, with its grand marble staircases, ornate chandeliers, stunning frescoes, and rooms dripped in gold leaf. The grandeur of its lavish interior is a reminder why Paris has long been considered the capital of elegance. In the meantime, here’s a peek inside. I’m sure you’ll see why it’s a must in my Paris Guide.

On our Paris Experience Tour this April, we had the rare opportunity to explore the interior of this magnificent building, beyond what the typical tour entails. On our private tour, we were taken underground, behind the stage, and into the costume workshops where hundreds of costumes are still made by hand. Some things are best left a mystery—we'll save those behind-the-scenes secrets for our future guests!

Today, we're sharing some of the stories you can experience when visiting the public areas.

A Young Architect with a Grand Vision

Opéra Garnier's story began with an unexpected choice when Emperor Napoleon III launched a design competition to build a new opera house in 1861. Out of 171 entries, a little-known 35-year-old architect named Charles Garnier was chosen for the task.

His vision was bold, theatrical, and radically modern for its time. Prior opera houses (which were candlelit and made of wood) had an average lifespan of just 15 years as they would often burn down. Garnier set out to change that, using stone, steel, and innovation to create a structure that would last centuries.

The Marble Stage for the Audience

The Grand Staircase was more of a stage, rather than just an entryway from the foyer to the theater. Its gleaming white marble and sweeping design made it the ultimate runway for Parisian society during the Belle Époque. Operagoers didn't just attend to see a performance, they came to be seen, with outfits meticulously planned and entrances carefully timed. Private staircases and opera boxes were assigned based on social standing. The spectacle began well before the curtain ever rose!

The Golden Foyer of Fashion and Flirtation

At intermission, guests would ascend to the Grand Foyer. Gilded from floor to ceiling in gold leaf and adorned with frescoes painted by artist Paul Baudry, it rivaled the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. This was where society mingled, flirted, and again showed off their attire. The opera itself was almost secondary to the social performances unfolding in the foyers and corridors.

Whether you're visiting solo or joining us on our next Paris Experience Tour, I highly recommend stepping inside the Opéra Garnier. As you walk through its grand hall, it’s easy to imagine the rustle of gowns, the whisper of gossip, and the music floating through the air.

Flower-infused ice

Summertime means gatherings, and no matter the occasion, I always love to share a little piece of my garden with my guests. Today I’m showing you another way to use flowers to elevate your event—with floral ice! Simply follow the steps below to learn how to make edible-flower ice cubes for your cold refreshments or to fill an ice bucket when chilling wine and champagne!

Whether hosting a garden party, brunch, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon drink, a flower garnish adds instant charm to a glass. Depending on the flowers you choose, they might even infuse a hint of flavor! I once left a few cubes to melt in my lemonade, and a couple of hours later, I came back to a slightly purple, lavender-tasting drink—it was so lovely!

What You’ll Need

• Distilled water, or boiled and cooled water (for crystal-clear cubes)

• A silicone ice cube tray

• Edible flowers (I used lavender and pansies for their vibrant color and delicate shape)

Step 1: Prepare the water

If you’re using tap or filtered water, I recommend boiling the water and letting it cool before freezing to remove the air bubbles and give your ice that clear, glassy look. This step is optional, but it makes a big difference. Otherwise, you can use distilled water, right out of the bottle, for similar results.

Step 2: Add the flowers

Gently place your flower face-up into each well (section) of the tray for the prettiest presentation, noting that most flowers will rise after adding water.

Step 3: Add water

Once your flowers are in place, fill the wells with your distilled (or boiled and cooled) water.

Step 4: Freeze

Pop the tray in the freezer and let it sit overnight. The next morning? Voilà! The little frozen gems will be ready to float in your favorite drinks.

Pro Tip:

Pansies and lavender aren’t just beautiful—they’re edible and safe for drinks and food. Just make sure they’re pesticide-free and labeled for consumption.

Last week I had the absolute joy of stepping into what felt like a little pocket of Burgundy, nestled in the hills of Southern California. I was invited as a guest speaker for Garden Week at Cal-a-Vie, a luxury health spa and retreat center, which I can say was truly unlike any other. I was honored to have the opportunity to offer floral design demonstrations and hands-on workshops with the wonderful guests who share the same love of flowers! I honestly couldn’t wait to tell you about the experience.

But first, let me paint the scene…

de Bourgogne

Cal-a-Vie is a 200-acre property which has been lovingly transformed over the past two decades. It has a deep connection to France, with several centuries-old buildings that were actually imported from Dijon (Burgundy), and meticulously reconstructed on the property. Even the interior spaces were designed with furniture and decor flown in from Europe and France!

Historic Buildings

On the expansive property, there’s a 16th-century chapel where guests meditate, a 400-year-old orangerie* that now hosts events, a 16-acre vineyard, and a historic parish house that serves estate wines. It’s like someone transported the romantic soul of the French countryside straight to California. I’m not exaggerating when I say every corner of it was breathtaking.

*An orangerie is a building similar to a greenhouse or conservatory, used to protect citrus trees grown in cooler climates.

Floral Workshops

During Garden Week, we hosted multiple floral demonstrations, book signings, and floral design workshops. One of the highlights was a beautiful luncheon where I designed an arrangement in an antique yellow French confit pot!

The surrounding energy throughout my experience was calm yet inspiring, offering the perfect environment for creativity. There’s something magical about arranging flowers in a space where the architecture and atmosphere naturally set the mood, whispering stories of history and beauty.

A Romantic Peony Arrangement in a French Urn

There’s something magical about combining your favorite blooms with a beautiful vessel—especially when the vessel is a stunning antique urn from France and the blooms are freshly cut from your own garden! With peonies in full bloom, I couldn’t resist creating a lush, garden-style arrangement to celebrate the season.

In the tutorial below, learn how I built this soft, whimsical bouquet using foraged greenery and seasonal blooms. Scroll down to watch the step-by-step video and gather some inspiration for your own floral creations.

Materials You’ll Need

• Your favorite container (I used a French antique stone urn)

• Chicken wire

• Shears or floral clippers

Step 1: Prepare Your Container

Before starting my arrangement, I added chicken wire to the urn in a loose ball shape to create a structure for the blooms. I also used a small vase inside the French urn, but this is optional, depending on whether the container you choose holds water.

Step 2: Forage Your Greens

One of my favorite parts of arranging is starting with greenery. For this arrangement, I went foraging in my backyard for vines and branches to form a natural, romantic base. If you have access to a garden or wooded area, I encourage you to snip a few stems—it adds a wild and effortless charm.

Here’s what I used:

• Clematis Vine

• Bridal Wreath Spirea

Note: be sure to strip the stems of your greenery and florals by removing any leaves below the waterline, and re-cut the stems at an angle before placing them into your container filled with room-temperature water. To extend flower life, you can add a floral preservative or follow the flower food recipe on our website.

Step 3: Add Supporting Florals

Once the greens were in, I began layering in vertical blooms to add movement and height while starting to create the overall shape:

• Lavender Lilac Blossoms

• Baptisia (False Indigo)

• Foxglove

Step 3: Peonies

The stars of the show are, of course, the peonies. For this piece, I selected three of my favorite varieties which I grow in my garden:

• Belleville Peony

• Blush Queen Peony

• Dolorodell Peony

Step 4: Finishing Touches

To bring the whole piece together, I added a few additional blooms wherever I saw spots that needed a little something extra:

• Scabiosa

• Garden Roses

The Story

Founded by Carine Pechavy in 2019, Maison Pechavy celebrates a century of her family’s wood-trading heritage. Inspired by the French art de vivre—especially the rituals surrounding firelight and gathering—Carine has created a line of home goods that are equal parts elegant, practical, and environmentally thoughtful.

The Collection

Fine Taper Candles

The “fine taper candles” are handcrafted in Provence using the ancient “plunge” method which gives them a thin conical shape. Like the other candles we carry, they’re smokeless and eco-friendly. The candles come in a box of 10 with varying soft color palettes meant to go with any décor.

We love the elegant look of adding a few different tapers to a table, in the same way we like to use an assortment of small bud vases.

Matches

A perfect blend of form and function, these matches are made from natural, untreated poplar wood with tips tinted in gorgeous hues to match the design of each box. Both the standard and long versions come in display-worthy boxes—ideal for styling on a coffee table or beside the hearth. They also pair beautifully with the coordinating fine taper candles, or our other varieties of candles for a thoughtful gift.

Scented Matches

The scented version of the long matches are already a store favorite, featuring Maison Pechavy’s signature fragrance with subtle notes of lavender and patchouli mixed with the woody scent of poplar.

Candle Holder Adapters

The solid brass candle holders can be used two ways—set flat on a table or riser, or used as an adapter so you can still display your favorite standard-sized candlesticks! We chose to carry the simplest design to add style to any tablescape, from rustic to modern.

As the gardens begin to wake, I find myself pausing, reflecting on the quiet strength and enduring grace of mothers.

Mother’s Day has always felt like more than a holiday to me. It’s a moment to recognize the deep, often unseen threads that connect us: the hands that tied our shoes, folded our laundry, and tucked us in at night; the voices that reassured us when we doubted ourselves; the love that guided us into becoming who we are.

I think of my own mother—her soft presence and her steady way of making a house feel like home. I remember the scent of her perfume, the hum of her voice as she moved through the kitchen, the way her garden always seemed to bloom with effortless beauty. She taught me how to notice the little things, how to arrange flowers, how to find my way through the world with quiet strength even when I struggled. She gave me roots, and wings to fly.

I also think of the many ways we mother as women—in friendships, in creativity, in tending to others, in building beautiful lives out of ordinary days. Whether you are a mother, long to be one, miss your own, or have found mothering in other forms, this weekend is for you too.

Antique French mirrors are a favorite at Les Fleurs. We’ve long adored their timeless elegance—from gilded frames and delicate detailing to the soft, timeworn patina and perfectly imperfect foxing. These mirrors are more than just functional objects—they’re heirlooms, steeped in history and romance.

Whether placed above a mantel, leaning casually in a hallway, or reflecting candlelight in a dining room, there are so many ways to incorporate them into your home. So today, we thought we’d share not only a little inspiration, but also a bit about the styles and history behind these treasures.

A Quick History of Gilded Mirrors

Like old furniture and architecture, the design styles of antique mirrors from France have distinctive characteristics, from the opulence of Baroque to the simplicity of Neoclassicism.

The list below includes design styles which have evolved through different historical periods in France. While the list is not exhaustive, it includes the most common ones we come across.

Baroque (1600–1750)

Lavish and dramatic, the Baroque style is defined by its ornate detail, grandeur, and formal elegance. Think sculptural frames, cherubs, and cartouche motifs.

Louis XV / Rococo (early to mid-1700s, France)

Evolving from Baroque’s formality, the Rococo style introduced a lighter, more whimsical touch. Characterized by graceful curves, asymmetry, and flowing "S" and "C" shapes, this style evoked movement and charm. Decorative elements often included shells, scrolls, and acanthus leaves.

 Louis XVI / Neoclassical (late 1700s–early 1800s)

Louis XVI mirrors reflect the influence of Greco-Roman antiquity. Clean lines, fluted columns, and balanced proportions. Common motifs included laurel wreaths, ribbon bows, flower baskets, and classical garlands.

Louis Philippe (1830–1848)

Understated yet elegant, Louis Philippe mirrors are known for their softly rounded shoulders (top corners) and minimal ornamentation.

Napoleon III (mid to late 1800s)

With the Second Empire came a return to opulence. Napoleon III mirrors embraced boldness, often showcasing elaborate carvings, dark gilding, and a blend of historical revival styles, making each piece rich with decorative detail.

Inspiration

There’s nothing quite like a gilded mirror on a Parisian mantel! During our last visit to the City of Light, we found ourselves constantly enchanted by the interiors: aged marble fireplaces topped with antique mirrors, vintage candlesticks, fresh blooms, and an air of understated elegance. The look is effortless: a mirror casually propped, layered with lived-in charm. It’s this balance—old and new, ornate and simple—that makes French style so timeless.

In the beginning of April, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of passionate Francophiles to Paris for our very first Paris Experience Tour! The week was filled with creativity, inspiration, and connection—some guests were discovering the city for the first time, while others brought their seasoned expertise and love for all things French. Here's a glimpse into some of the highlights from this unforgettable adventure. 

Garden Walks

We wandered through not one, not two, but three spectacular French gardens: from the grand, manicured grounds of the Château de Versailles to the romantic paths of the Jardin du Luxembourg, and finally, to the lush, glasshouse-filled Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil. Each stop offered a unique take on French garden design.

A Baking Demonstration in Versailles

While in Versailles, we had the joy of joining pastry chef Molly J. Wilk at the Boutique Royale for a baking demonstration. Molly guided us through the art of making madeleines and macarons—two quintessential French treats. We’ll definitely be recreating her recipes at home!

Behind the Scenes at the Opéra Garnier

It’s safe to say that our visit to the Opéra Garnier was a group favorite! On the tour, we got to step behind the scenes of the iconic landmark for an exclusive look at its private salons and backstage spaces. We learned about the opera's rich history, grand architecture and even got a peek inside the costume department. Every corner, filled with painted ceilings, mosaics, and opulent chandeliers, dazzled with beauty and drama. It truly felt like stepping into a dream.

A Perfume Workshop at Fragonard

One of the most sensory-rich experiences of the tour was our perfume-making workshop at Maison Fragonard in the Musée du Parfum Fragonard. Guests learned the basics of fragrance composition and crafted their own signature scent and eau de toilette to take home. It was a beautiful way to connect with French heritage and take home a truly personal souvenir.

Antiquing in Paris

No Parisian adventure would be complete without a bit of treasure hunting! So, between the tours and workshops, we spent time exploring Les Puces de Saint-Ouen and a street fair. Our guests delighted in discovering vintage textiles, timeless homewares, and one-of-a-kind keepsakes—each piece with its own story.

Floral Workshop at L’Arrosoir

To round out the week, guests took part in a bouquet-making workshop at L’Arrosoir, Paris’s oldest flower shop. Surrounded by blooms, we learned the techniques behind classic French floral design and created our own arrangements to celebrate the end of a magical tour. We left Paris full of inspiration, with new friendships and unforgettable memories.
