This is Reboot’s very last day. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know so many of you over the past two years and I wanted one last time to thank you for your support and enthusiasm for my lockdown blog. I leave you with my favourite two tenets for living healthily, in the hope that they will inspire you similarly and successfully guide you towards a fit and happy older age.

First, ‘You’ve only got one body. And if you don’t take care of it, no one else is going to…’.

So, step up and take back responsibility for your own health. Educate yourself. Learn how it works, understand that mind and body are fundamentally interlinked, and how to recognise when things are out of kilter.

Second, ‘Your body always whispers before it shouts’.

Life-changing illness doesn’t simply arrive from nowhere. The signs and signals that something is not as it should be are usually there months or years beforehand. If you ‘listen’ to your body you will pick up issues long before they land you on your doctors doorstep. Take the appropriate steps early on and you can sort most things before they blow up into something more serious.

And what to do when you realise there’s a problem?

I wrote my two books, ‘Reboot your Health’ and ‘Reboot your Brain’, to point you in the right direction. They are, I hope, simply and clearly written; comprehensive DIY manuals offering non-invasive, scientifically proven ways to get yourself back on track, back to balance. Useful references in times of trouble.

The end of this particular journey...

It is 2022, and time, I think, for me to head in a new direction. I am going to take a break from researching and writing RebootHealth and wanted to thank you all so much for following my musings and investigations over the past couple of years and participating so enthusiastically with your questions and suggestions.

It has felt as if I have found a collection of new friends and I now seem to know many of you well, despite never having met in the flesh. I have loved hearing your comments and feedback and it’s been a fascinating experience watching my audience grow and learning from scratch about all sorts of things I knew nothing about - new technology, social media, marketing and setting up online shops. I have had so much fun, and learnt a lot along the way and I hope you may have found some of my research useful too.

During my investigations and endless reading of fairly dry and often tedious research papers, I came across something that, connecting all the dots, it seems to me might be ground-breaking, and perhaps ultimately life-changing for those with longer term health problems. Which is what I want to investigate in greater depth over the coming months.

I may well be on a wild goose chase, but one thing I do have, after forty years of investigating natural, non-invasive health solutions, is an extensive knowledge of what is out there, and a pretty good idea of where to look and how to at least attempt to string together the dots that I sense might be waiting to be joined.

What such a journey needs, however, is time, and uncluttered brain space. Hence the decision to bow out now.

3-Steps to Clearing Acne: What works

UK statistics show that around 95% of us, between the ages of 14-30, will suffer from acne. Acne can leave devastation in its wake, both physical and emotional. We all know what, at its most extreme, it looks like - raw angry red skin on the face, and often back and shoulders, covered with lumps and cysts, pustules and nodules, black heads and white heads.

And what to do about it? Often very little seems to make a difference - only the agony of time passing, until it has run its course.

I suffered badly as a child, and had to endure years of awkwardness and embarrassment that today could probably be sorted in a matter of months. My doctor then had nothing to offer, other than reassurance that I would grow out of it at puberty.

Which I didn’t.

At which point he prescribed the dubious drug Roaccutane, recently in the press yet again for its links to suicide, which even back then they knew triggered terrible side effects. He warned me of possible blindness, and suicidal feelings, but guaranteed it would clear my skin. On consideration, I decided bad skin was the better of the three evils, and following the media reports last week, that may well have been the right decision. Remarkable that it is still the pharmaceutical drug of choice for acne sufferers all these years later.

Alongside brutal damage to your skin that leaves scars that may take years to disappear, acne can also trigger a deep scarring of the psyche, a loss of social confidence and a lowering of self esteem during those crucial formative social years that can echo through the decades and may take far longer to fade than the physical marks acne leaves behind.

This is a brief overview of some acne clearing possibilities; effective approaches to reducing skin inflammation and improving texture and scarring. Each of us will have different triggers for acne flare ups, so, as ever, it’s not a one size fits all approach, but instead a question of working out your individual issues and adapting your lifestyle and habits accordingly.

Step One: Check for imbalances

Your GP or naturopath can help you to identify any imbalances in your system - nutritional, hormonal or emotional - and sort them out for you.

Hormones. Get your hormones checked.

Hormone levels are different in each of us - they ebb and flow according to your age, your health and what is going on in your life and environment. These hormone tides move differently in men and women and as they rise and fall, can adversely affect the state of your skin.

Puberty frequently brings uncomfortable skin outbreaks in its wake. Your menstrual cycle is affected by hormone levels and can trigger unaccustomed skin flare-ups and additional sensitivity. Decades later, menopause is often accompanied by that same sensitivity and occasional spurts of the acne you thought you had left far behind you. And men, though few seem to register the fact, get menopausal too, so again, look to the hormones if your skin starts playing up for the first time in years.

Top tip: Get your GP or a naturopathic doctor to do a hormone test for you. Rebalancing your hormones may calm your skin.

Probiotics: Get gut gardening

The key to fabulous skin lies in the quality and diversity of your gut bacteria. The vast majority of microbes hang out in your stomach, in your colon and small intestines. But they are also found all over your skin and the health of your gut is often reflected in the condition of your complexion. Your gut garden needs regular attention to keep it happy. Toxic metals

Have you ever considered that the rashes and spots you repeatedly have to deal with may be down to the effects of toxic metals, an onslaught your complexion simply can’t handle?

We are exposed to heavy metals from a variety of sources: copper pipes, aluminium saucepans, mercury from dental fillings, fish and water, cosmetics, pesticides and the air that we breathe and yet metals are one of the few things that the body cannot get rid of on its own. They can rapidly overload your system, and the symptoms may show in your face.

Top tip: Ask a naturopath or nutritionist to run a toxic metal test for you. If you have high levels in your system you may have found one of the causes of your skin issues. They will advise you how best to eliminate the metals.

Cut the Sugar; change your diet

My grandmother always told me my acne was simply down to an over consumption of chocolate and biscuits. The vast majority of many people’s daily diet these days is drenched in sugar, hidden in the processed foods we eat or flagrantly flaunted in the cakes, sandwiches and doughnuts of our increasingly coffee shop lives. She put me on a strict anti-sugar diet and it certainly made a difference in the short term.

And research backs her up. We eat far too many carbohydrates, trans and saturated fats, sugar and dairy products in the standard Western diet, all of which can create excess oil production in the sebaceous glands and trigger the inflammation that contributes to the uncomfortably red patches that can cover both face and body. Clear out the sugar and you will clean up your skin.

Emotions

What - or who - is getting ‘under your skin’? Last but definitely not least, consider any difficult emotions that may be continually present in your day-to-day life. Very simplistically, emotions release chemicals that flood your body on a daily basis. Rage, anger, guilt, betrayal - all of these may be contributing to the flare up of your acne. Mind and skin are closely connected and its also worth examining whether thoughts, feelings or events from long ago may be linked to the state of your skin. Resolve the emotional flare-ups in your life and you may well find it resolves the flare-ups in your skin.

Step Two: Reboot your skin

Step one is to take the unhelpful stuff out and get your body back to balance. Equally important is Step two - adding in the ‘good stuff’ that will calm and revitalise your skin.

Eat right to feed your skin

You have probably heard the oft repeated phrase ‘You are what you eat’ and nothing could be truer for your face. The Emotion Code: Is this the easiest way to clear emotional trauma?

Very few people understand that unresolved emotional trauma can damage them irrevocably. Wipe them out physically. And I mean those words literally: never underestimate the power of negative thoughts and feelings and the serious effects of difficult to deal with past events on your present day health.

You can eat every organic lettuce out there, train for hours each day, detoxify your environment and deep breathe till the cows come home, but ignore the emotions you have buried within you at your peril. Emotions unresolved can ultimately be the death of you. Pay them attention, however, and deal with the past and you will set yourself finally free.

I can hear you harrumphing here - melodramatic - ridiculous, you may say. But of all the things I have learnt, over all the years I have studied, this is the understanding that I value most. If you are suffering from serious illness, the first place I would urge you to look, is in the pain-filled memories of days gone by. It is there that your healing will begin.

Questions to consider

What is still unresolved? Who caused you suffering and pain? What trauma have you never been able to face? What feelings have you suppressed and what thoughts and truths blanked out? The deeper you stuff them down inside you in a vain attempt to silence their messages, the harder they struggle to emerge. Think of the energy you use up keeping them down in the dark, trying to forget or avoid the difficulties of the past.

But how do you deal with them?

Some things feel safer simply buried - put away, never to see the light of day. Who wants to go through it all again? Who wants to spend years working it through with a counsellor? What is the point? Nothing changes the past you might think. We are all skilled at suppressing our emotions, more today than ever before, because in our fast moving lives it hardly seems like there is time to feel them in the first place, let alone deal with or process any issues.

And the answer?

You can’t change what’s happened certainly, but you can definitely change the effect it has on you. And so I would like to introduce you today to The Emotion Code, a nothing short of brilliant method of clearing the pain of trapped emotions. Permanently, and in a matter of minutes - and best of all, entirely by yourself, in the privacy of your own home.

The Emotion Code was developed by an American doctor, Brad Nelson, who believes, as I do, that emotions get stuck within the cells and structures of our bodies, trapped in the trauma of the moment. He describes them as energy balls, building up inside you until they are finally released by being simply felt and acknowledged.

His process is simple and based on the understanding that everything we have ever experienced is stored in the subconscious mind, much in the same way as information is stored in files on a personal computer.

He has put all the information together in a book that shows you first how to find the emotions that need to be set free and then exactly how to release them. All you need to begin to clear the pain of the past is his list of emotions, charted in a series of rows and columns; a magnet to run up and down the governing meridian that runs from your upper lip, over the top of your head and down to the top of your spine; and a basic understanding of how to muscle test, which he teaches you in the book.

Odd certainly, but please don’t judge before experimenting yourself. Grade the event or emotion you choose to work with before you start out of 10, with 10/10 being the most painful measurement. Grade it again later in the day after you have released it and note any change.

I have read a wide variety of books on similar subjects, offering ways to clear mental and emotional stress. Some of them work well, others less so. This one, though the concept seems too simple to possibly be effective, walks its talk. Often the simplest ideas are the most powerful. And as a kinesiologist, trained to check the muscle responses of the body, I can clearly quantify the difference before and after once the stress has been removed. As each trapped emotion is released the body grows proportionately stronger. Each emotion takes around a minute to clear, and as they leave your body, you can sometimes physically feel them go: a tremor that shudders slightly as it is set free. Some more intensely than the rest.

The subconscious mind is called that because it sits ‘sub’ - underneath - your conscious mind. And that’s where the memories of everything that has ever happened to you are stored. With muscle testing you can ask your body when a particular emotion first got trapped, at what age, or by what person. If you have a physical pain or problem, you can check if there is an emotion attached to the pain, and in clearing it, reduce the intensity. Emotions can weigh heavy. You feel lighter afterwards.

Covid 19 lung damage? An extremely expensive Christmas present!

Those of you who follow this blog regularly will know my enthusiasm for hydrogen water generators, particularly powerful allies in the hunt for better health. If you see bubbles rising to the surface of your glass, you can see the generator is working, pumping out the hydrogen and therefore, attached to the same machine with a cannula, it will be similarly, if invisibly, pumping. ‘Simples’ after all, as the lovely Meerkats might say.

So, on paper and according to the science, definitely a wonderful thing. I was feeling slightly post-covid lethargic before I started and now, two weeks later after using it daily while I work, much more energised. Is that solely down to the hydrogen molecules? I don’t know - but as I haven’t done anything different from usual, I suspect so.

How not to get sick when you fly

Doesn’t it drive you mad? You’ve been healthy for months, not a cold or a sniffle or cough in sight. You've avoided Covid; you are finally free to leave the endlessness of lockdown behind you and venture abroad for the first time in months but it's the getting there that feels so tricky.

You take your short flight – or a long one – off on holiday to relax and restore, and what normally happens? (We are talking here about the old days, less dangerous somehow than in these new coronavirus days). The very next morning you go down with something horrible and spend the first four days of your longed-for break in bed coughing your heart out. Sound familiar?

2 Essential oils that protect against viruses and bacteria

For a less expensive but powerfully effective antiviral, try an essential oil, and rub it on your hands and around your neck and face before you take off. Wearing an essential oil diffusing necklace around your neck will also help protect you from viruses and bacteria in crowded airports and packed out planes.

The anti-microbial activity of essential oils has been well studied. Researchers at Metropolitan University of Manchester found that essential oils (Tea-Tree, Patchouli, Lavender, Geranium and Citricidal) quickly killed and inhibited the growth of three different strains of MRSA bacteria. They studied the oils singly and in combination and also, as the results were different in each case, whether the vapour or direct contact was most effective. Oregano oil is one of my personal favourites, and research scientist DrJean C. Lapraz reported that he couldn't find any microbe that could survive in the presence of the essential oils of cinnamon or oregano. Other recommended oils for flu's and viral infections include bergamot, lemongrass and thyme.

Professor Griffon, Director of the French Police Toxicology Laboratory conducted texts to assess the antiseptic effect of a blend of essential oils on airborne microbes. He left a number of Petri dishes in an open room for 24 hours. Microbes from the air settled in the open Petri dishes and formed colonies. He then analysed what had grown in the dishes and found 210 colonies of various microbes including harmful moulds and staphylococci. He then sprayed a blend of essential oils into the air in the room. Within 30 minutes 206 colonies had been killed and only 4 were left, none of which were harmful.

I have spent the past couple of years (as we all have) searching for the ‘best’ and most practical mask out there. I’ve tried so many. All of them, including my early picks in the first few months of the pandemic, had good points that were more often than not counteracted by the bad. Some of them looked ridiculous, even though they protected fabulously against the smallest of infectious particles. Some smelt weird; or they pressed too close to your face and made your pores sweat, whilst also managing to fug up your glasses. None of them could be rated at 100%. Most didn’t really reach 60% on my score card and they are now lined up uselessly inside my hall cupboard looking like some slightly worn Tracy Emin artwork. Expensive failed experiments that I can’t quite bring myself to bin.

Mask fundamentals

Whereas masks used to be items of ridicule, worn only by Japanese tourists worried about pollution from the germs of foreign lands, now they have progressed to become a ubiquitous fashion necessity for every one of us. Not only should they look good, but they need to protect you properly from the threat of bacteria, viruses and covid - all invisible, airborne particles that infect you principally through your nose and mouth.

Airborne viruses are aerosilised, caught up in the molecules of the air itself and so minuscule in size that if air can get through your mask, so can a virus. Masks do very little to protect you from viral infection but what they can definitely do is reduce the amount of viral particles you breathe in - your ‘viral load’ - and they will protect you from stray travelling airborne droplets from a virally infected person, protecting them, at the same time, from any infection you may be carrying.

3 Manuka honey

‘Just as we like to say that 60 is the new 40, by the year 2030, the age 90 will be the new 40’.

I came across this quote recently, from Dr Michael Roizer of the Cleveland Clinic in America – and it stopped me in my tracks. Does that mean he thinks we will be regularly living to the age of 180 (correct me if my maths is dodgy!). It’s woken me up in the night regularly since - because I don’t know about you, but my teeth, eyes, hair, muscles, bones and skin are already definitely on the decline and I am about to be ‘only’ 60. None of me, one hundred percent, could possibly stagger along for another 120 years! A facile worry I know, because presumably they will be able to whip out our teeth, eyes and hair and replace them with something new…but bones, skin? And what about my brain? It’s the stuff of horror movies.

But as we are on the subject of teeth this month, it got me seriously thinking about how to keep mine as long as possible. I’ve written before about the dangers of the bacteria in your mouth. It’s the overgrowth of bacteria in our mouths that creates the tooth-related issues - the receding gums, cavities and bad breath. Toothbrushes, however sonic, can only do a certain amount and those mouthwashes are generally hideously chemical, which doesn’t do you much good long term. I hate flossing with a passion even though I entirely understand it’s an essential if you want to get to the gaps in between. I just haven’t yet found a way to keep my teeth clean that isn’t too time-consuming, boring and that I give up on after a week or so.

Could this be the most exciting innovation in tooth hygiene in our lifetime? In my opinion, yes. Indisputably. This French-made toothbrush is nothing less than revolutionary. In concept, in shape and in technology.

It is, as its name suggests, shaped like a Y. The upper ‘U’ part is plastic and shaped to encompass all the teeth, whatever their shape and size, in either the upper or lower jaw. You simply clean your top teeth, and then reverse the ‘U’ to start work on the bottom.

No more flossing

The ‘U’ is filled with thousands – 35,000 to be precise - of tiny plastic ‘teeth’ that vibrate when you turn on the switch, allowing you to clean all your teeth simultaneously, cleaning off plaque, destroying the bacteria filled biofilm and cleaning - miraculously - those irritating gunk-filled gaps between your teeth. You are instructed to chew lightly up and down as the machine whirrs, with a couple of ‘move your jaw to left and right’ commands thrown in for extra thoroughness. The instructions say you will notice the difference in a week but I would say you see the difference straight away. Your teeth feel cleaner, and far smoother than usual. And gazing in fascination in my magnifying mirror, there was zero need for an additional flossing helping hand. Clean and shiny all round.

The minuses

So now for balance, just so you are warned, here are the couple of things that threw me off initially.

The ‘U’ is cumbersome and bulky in comparison to the lightweight unobtrusive single head we are all accustomed to, and the first couple of times I used it, I found myself gagging, like you do when they put those rubber moulds in your mouth at the dentist. But the mind soon gets used to it and by day 3 I was a pro.

The Y-brush is certainly not cheap. But then neither are any of those Phillips sonic toothbrushes and neither is the cost of correcting gum disease, or having a root canal, so the £110 it costs is possibly a price worth considering if it postpones the terrors of dental surgery?

My major complaint - and I am only in week one, so this may be something I manage more successfully ongoing - is that I struggled to manage the on/off button. If you press with the wrong amount of force, you simply move from mode to mode without switching the brush on. My husband, however, had it sorted in seconds, so this may well be a male/female thing - or more likely just a ‘me’ thing!

The biggest problem of all?

This is the tricky part. It’s almost impossible to get hold of one. French/British relations have been off and on for centuries. Brexit sent things spiralling in the down direction, and now, with Boris’ latest under the radar AUKUS deal that has apparently knocked £57 billion off France’s economy over the next 5 years, alongside his cancelling of a £1.2 billion order for the French Valneva vaccine, it may just be that UK buyers are far down the toothbrush waiting list.

I thought it would be a cinch. Logged on to Amazon.fr, who confirmed the sale with shipping to the UK, deducted the money and then 3 days later emailed to say they couldn’t ship to the UK after all. To-date they haven’t returned my money either.

I wrote directly to the company, asking for a link in case any of you wanted to buy directly. No reply.

I don’t know anyone in France, so in the end I resorted to the extremely helpful friend of a friend who agreed to lend me her address for Amazon and then kindly posted the Y-brush directly to me. Not exactly simple, but some things are worth fighting for and for me, this is one.

I am sorry not to be more helpful about making it easier for you. All I can say is get one if you possibly can and once you’ve overcome the unaccustomedness of it all I hope you will be delighted.

Certainly the periodontitis bugs in your mouth with be severely traumatised. And who can ask more than that!

Teeth problems? It’s all about your microbes

Bleeding mouth, plaque overload, receding gums, sensitive teeth? Join the 70% of us that will – or are already - suffering from periodontal problems. On average we each have around 500-600 types of different bacteria multiplying happily inside our mouths, behind the closed wall of our lips. Only 10% of those, however, are harmful to us in any way, and only three, based on scientific research, are linked to more serious teeth issues.

Streptococcus mutans is the worst of that bunch, which feeds on the residual food matter that gets stuck between your teeth after you have eaten. It thrives on any sort of sugar, natural or processed, and excretes a form of lactic acid that destroys the enamel that protects and strengthens the tooth’s outer wall.

Tooth problems are not down simply to the effects of sugar. Sugar is a secondary problem. The number one slot goes to the bacteria themselves, the rogue invaders breaking down the enamel on your teeth and destroying your gums in the process. It really is that simple. Control the number of bacteria and you will sort many of your teeth related issues.

Bacteria and their biofilm habitat

What is a biofilm? And why do we not hear more about it when it seems to be THE key to successful dental hygiene. Even the word ‘biofilm’ sounds like something out of a horror movie. A thin slimy coating of invisible slickness that covers all of your teeth, inhabited by billions, if not trillions, of minuscule invaders. Multiplying daily. Fed by sugars.

We tend to take the state of our mouths entirely for granted - and yet we really shouldn’t. Treponema denticola and Porphyromonas gingivalis are the harmful bacteria that inflame your gums, causing them to recede, exposing the bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth firmly in place and finally attacking the nerves deep inside. Lift up your upper lip and look closely. It’s not something we tend to do and you may be in for something of a surprise. Possibly not a nice one.

Are your gums red or swollen? Do they bleed when you brush them at night? Are parts of your teeth that used to be nicely covered by the gum now on show? Wobbly teeth? You may have periodontal problems that need serious sorting.

‘Brush better; floss more’ is usually the cry of your frustrated dentist

Who amongst us has seriously lasted longer than a day or two, however good the initial intentions? Tooth hygiene is simply not fun and takes up far too much time spent more happily digging in the garden, hanging out with friends or catching up with Instagram or Facebook posts.

But tooth decay is a sign your mouth is under attack. And those bacterial marauders don’t play fair. It’s all-out war, not mutual side-by-side cohabiting, and unless you pay attention, in the long run you don’t stand much of a chance.

So what to do and don’t?

Dental Don’ts

Don’t use fluoride: Tempted by the smiling pretty dentist on the TV ad? Please don’t invest in a fluoride filled toothpaste brand owned by one of the ’bought up the world’ household names that seem to have an advertising budget the size of Brazil. As she tells you it will strengthen your enamel and whiten your teeth, alongside a whole host of other miraculous benefits, be wary. Fluoride is a known carcinogen, and the very last thing you should be putting into your mouth on a daily basis, let alone twice a day, every time you brush your teeth. It is highly toxic: to your brain, your kidneys, your bones, your thyroid and your pineal gland.

Mull over the mouthwash issue: Please read the label, and remember that everything you put in your mouth moves rapidly into your bloodstream. Commercial mouthwashes are full of chemicals, and some of them, Listerine in particular, of alcohol that dries out your mouth, allowing the entrenched bacteria to multiply exponentially.

Brush softer: Too abrasive with that toothbrush and you can damage your gums even further. Brush carefully, slowly and thoroughly. Each of your 32 teeth has five sides to focus on with brushing and flossing – front, back, sides and upper surface. Don’t miss half of it by skimming over the surface and missing the trickier to access areas.

Dental Do’s:

Microbe control is the only answer. There is no doubt about it. If you want happy, healthy teeth into your older years, you simply have to spend the time, and brush each and every tooth regularly each and every day. Consider that you have entire colonies of bacteria overrunning your mouth. Crowd control is what it’s all about. Make dental hygiene a daily habit and spend 5 minutes or more ‘toothbrush time’ to keep their numbers well in check.

1 Tongue scrape: First thing in the morning, before you swallow down the night’s bacteria build-up with a glass of water or a cup of tea, get tongue scraping. The white film that sits on top of your tongue is filled with bacteria. Spend at least 30 seconds scraping, and spit it out. Don’t swallow it down. I like this tongue scraper.

2 Get Brushing: Your toothbrush is your number one tool for sabotaging that biofilm. It takes at least two minutes to clean all the surfaces of your teeth thoroughly and correctly. Not too hard – even a soft pressure will do the job. And make sure it’s the last thing you do at night.

3 Buy a sonic toothbrush: These are electric toothbrushes that give off transonic waves which wipe out the fimbria, the tiny filaments that microbes use to attach to the enamel of your teeth. Phillips Sonicare and Braun make good quality products.

4 Floss, floss, floss! Take another minute each day to clean out those difficult to reach areas between your teeth. Reduce the opportunity for a bacteria sugar feast.

5 Invest in an air irrigator - This is the most fun you can have with tooth cleaning. It’s basically flossing with water and air and it’s quick, easy and thoroughly satisfying. Aim the waterjet between your teeth rather than at the gum. Work your way round each tooth and the whole procedure should take you less than a minute. 6 Find the right toothpaste: It doesn’t seem to make logical sense to have the sugar substitute Xylitol in a toothpaste that’s meant to protect you against – sugars! But science shows otherwise. Jannesson (2002) found that over a six-month period, using a 10% Xlylitol content toothpaste reduced the levels of cavity-forming bacteria in test subjects' saliva and plaque. Unlike ‘real’ sugar, xylitol isn't converted in the mouth to the acids that eat away at your enamel.

7 Add in a herbal dental powder or mouthwash: Oregano oil has been shown to help with bacterial crowd control. Add two teaspoons to some warm water and rinse. It’s that simple! Why you may need an anti-flu (or anti-covid?) nebuliser this winter

As Covid-19’s next wave looks likely to be heading our way this winter, consider adding a nebuliser to your coronavirus medicine cabinet. You have around 5 days from the point of infection while coronavirus replicates and multiplies in your nasal passages before spreading through the rest of the body. These five days are the window for knocking any virus out and the best way to sort them is with a nebuliser and a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide.

What is a nebuliser?

A nebuliser is a machine that aerosolises liquid, using either a clear plastic face mask, or a plastic re-useable mouthpiece. It allows you to breathe in specific solutions or prescribed medicines as a super-fine mist, allowing them to penetrate deep into your lungs, reaching even the most distant and most minuscule areas of your airways, your sinuses, throat and oesophagus, which is where viruses primarily replicate and multiply, rendering them inactive and effectively wiping out any foothold a cold or flu virus may have claimed. I keep a counter-top version at home, and have a small handbag sized version for travelling abroad.

There are numerous different versions on Amazon – or we have a travel version in our shop on the site though these are less powerful than the countertop plug in types.

Why would I want one?

I suppose, for me, this is my coronavirus security blanket. This would be my first port of call the second I noticed some sort of weakness in my chest. You know that short period of time before you go down with that irritating winter cold or more serious flu-like symptoms and usually reach for your vitamin C or echinacea? This coming Covid winter I feel I need something that will zap a bit harder, a bit more immediately, and a nebuliser in the cupboard simply makes me feel more in control of my destiny. Which more likely than not may be entirely ridiculous, but it’s deeply comforting in these uncertain times. Emotionally supportive, just knowing it’s there.

On a practical level, nebulisers have been safely used for years. You may already have been recommended one by your doctor and they are available in most clinics (though so much easier to use one in the comfort of your own home without exposure to everyone else’s germs and illness).

They can reduce breathlessness; they ease wheezing and that ‘tight chest’ feeling, loosening and dispersing any build-up of phlegm and mucus, keeping your airways clear so that you can breathe.

What can I put in a nebuliser?

Usually, a single teaspoon of liquid is sufficient for a single treatment.

Saline solution: This is the liquid used most frequently. It helps open your airways and thin secretions, making it easier to cough up mucus from your lungs. That lovely word ‘expectorate’ that conjures such phlegmy images! You can make it yourself, or buy it ready made in the chemist. Check the level of salt in it with the pharmacist, adjusting according to your specific issue. At the first sign of a cold for example, you could reach for a 0.9% salt content saline solution. This will moisten your airways and help dislodge bacteria and viruses. The words ‘isotonic’ or ‘physiological’ should be written on the packet, meaning that the solution has a salt content similar to that of your own bodily fluids and shouldn’t therefore irritate your lungs in any way.

3% or 6% solutions rather confusingly have a salt content of 1%, which liquefies mucus lodged in your lungs or sinuses, making it easier to cough it up and out.

Hydrogen peroxide:

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful anti-inflammatory which will reduce any inflammation in your lungs caused by a virus. You can buy an inexpensive 3% solution in any chemist and dilute down with saline solution. Hydrogen peroxide consists of a water molecule (H20) with an extra oxygen atom (H2O2) and it’s this extra atom that creates a substance that can break through the virus’ protective outer shell and de-activate them. This is why, at the first sign of any symptoms, a short 5 minutes nebulising of hydrogen peroxide will reduce your viral load and may fend off infection entirely.

The body produces huge amounts of hydrogen peroxide naturally but when your immune cells get overwhelmed, they need help to reduce the chances of any looming viral infection. Medical professionals recommend diluting hydrogen peroxide down to 1% but if you find this irritates your nasal passages, start with a weaker solution as below and build up slowly over time.

Easy to do weak dilution: Take half a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide and mix with 14 teaspoons of saline which will get you to approximately 0.1% strength which is a safe and effective dose. Keep in the fridge, and use a teaspoon at a time.

The American doctor, Dr Mercola, suggests the following recipe to achieve 0.1% of food grade hydrogen peroxide suitable for nebulisation.

Dr Mercolas ‘recipe’:

1 Make your own saline: Take a ½ litre glass jar and fill with purified or distilled water (NOT tap water). Add one level teaspoon (and he suggests a metal measurer to get a precise amount) of sea salt and dissolve it in the water. This turns the solution to normal 0.9% sodium chloride or saline which is the same consistency as that in your body.

2 He suggests using 12% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Take ¾ teaspoon and put it into your half litre of saline.

This will give you 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Put the solution in the fridge and label it. It should last you 3-4 months at least.

I would stress here that nebulised hydrogen peroxide should be used only when you feel you may have picked up a viral infection, at the start of any symptoms and only for a few days at a time - and never on a day-to-day basis as a preventative measure.

When you notice viral symptoms, nebulise immediately with hydrogen peroxide every hour initially, for five minutes, reducing to every 4-6 hours as you feel better.

How to get rid of ‘Old Person’ smell

Have you ever walked into an older person’s house and registered that underlying, catch- in-your-nose distinctive background scent? Slightly musty, fusty and a little bit sickly sweet. A smell of dust and deterioration; stale and grassy, the unkind odour of age.

I had always presumed it was to do with not washing clothes that had sat in unaired cupboards for far too long; the odour of old coats and shoes and cardigans sitting in a cramped and dusty space that the occupant no longer had the time, strength or inclination to sort any more.

But it turns out I was wrong, and that there’s an entirely scientific name for the condition; the catchy sounding word ‘nonenal’ is the term scientists use to describe the very particular stale smell that is generated as cells age and deteriorate, and air and bacteria react with the skin’s natural oils. It comes out of your pores, and rubs from your body onto chairs and sofas, sheets and beds, which is why it’s not just the person, but also their surroundings, that take on the distinctive odour.

In a study carried out by The Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia in 2012, published in the journal PLoS ONE, a group of donors were asked to sleep for five nights in unscented t-shirts fitted with underarm pads. These were then cut into four different pieces and placed in glass jars for a separate group to assess. The body odours were collected from three different age groups, 20-30, 45-55, and 75-95 years old, and the testers were given glass jars with the pads in nine different combinations and asked to identify which belonged to the older participants. They also had to guess how old the owner of each pad might be. Tricky no? But apparently not. They all, repeatedly, got it right.

The accuracy and precision of these results is likely to be down to a left-over evolutionary skill, buried deep in our DNA, that allowed our ancestors to analyse (through smell) the body chemicals a potential mate was giving off. This would vary in composition and strength as they got older, helping suitors find partners of a prime reproductive age and avoid sick or unhealthy mates.

We all age, day by day, and there’s not a lot that can be done about that displeasing fact. Smell is an integral part of living; it guides our experience and understanding of the world we live in every bit as much as the other senses. We love the smell of a young baby; can identify the forceful odour of a teenage boy, and sometimes the hormone rushes of pubescent girls or menopausal women; but no-one signs up for smelling like a musty, mouldy old sofa in their older age. Most of us wash thoroughly and regularly, so the problem is rarely down to lack of hygiene. So, what to do about it?

The Persimmon Solution

The Japanese, with one of the oldest populations on the planet, clearly recognise the issue. They, as we know from endless TV programmes, have a fascination with cleanliness, and have come up with a solution that is both simple to use and relatively inexpensive. The answer, it seems, lies with the persimmon, a rather tasteless, and for me, previously under-rated fruit. In Japan it is popular and a particular 100% natural, hand-made persimmon and green tea soap with which you wash both skin and hair seems to be the cure for that musty ‘old person’ smell. It removes 2-nonenal (the chemical oxidised on the skin) in a Heineken-like way that no other ‘normal’ soap seems able to match.

Shiseido, the high profile Japanese cosmetic company has developed a scent that neutralises the, as they describe it, ‘not nice at all’ smell of nonenal. Mirai has a range of persimmon-based products that deal with the ‘old person’ smell that it says comes from a combination of hormonal imbalances, menopause and nonenal. Their own clinical studies claim a reduction in nonenal of 97% by using persimmon soap as opposed to 35% when using normal soaps.

So that’s our bodies sorted, and an overnight blast or two of ozone will wipe the gusty smell of everyone’s lockdown unworn shoes and clothes, hanging for far too long in airless cupboards.

Done and dusted! No fear of ‘Old Person Smell’ for any of us then.

Tinnitus tips | Alternative treatments for this distressing affliction

As I grow older, more and more of my contemporaries complain of tinnitus, that distressing syndrome where your head is filled with white noise - or ringing, or buzzing or banging or hissing sounds - that simply don’t go away. Not external noises that everyone can hear and that will shortly cease, but hideous internal noise that goes on and on, driving you to distraction, desperate for that inner silence you previously took so for granted.

Sometimes the sound is constant; at other times it stops and starts, and the volume goes up and down, for no apparent reason. Sometimes the noises echo in only one ear, at other times they change randomly to the other, and for periods they can fill the entirety of your head. For some people a familiar melody plays on permanent repeat, for others a thudding drum beat raps in time to the heart.

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is thought to be caused by an imbalance in the auditory system that is often initially triggered by exposure to loud noise. It appears when your central nervous system somehow gets ‘stuck’ in fight/flight/freeze mode, moving your whole body into a state of acute awareness and your hearing into one of hyper vigilance, magnifying the background external sounds your mind normally blanks out along with the everyday internal noises of the body. Changes in pressure inside your head sound like loud pops and crackles; nerve impulses hiss and buzz; every beat of your heart thuds over-loudly. It’s your cerebral cortex and auditory system on overdrive.

Tinnitus affects more than 6 million people in the UK - around one in ten of us. Many who have served in the armed forces and been exposed for years to the sounds of weaponry suffer from it. People who regularly shoot clay pigeons or game report the problem and even loud nightclub or pop concert music over a long period of time can ultimately lead to the condition. It can affect any one of us, unexpectedly and often out of the blue.

Taking certain pharmaceutical drugs can damage the nerves of your ear, and an ear infection can also bring on the onset of tinnitus, as can something as seemingly insignificant as a build-up of ear wax in your outer ear. Tinnitus can also be a symptom of Meniere's disease, a disorder of the balance mechanism of the inner ear.

The reasons you get tinnitus are many and varied; the crucial question is how to get rid of it? The medical profession have no pharmaceutical answer at present, but there are various non-invasive options that would be my first port of call to explore if you were ever unfortunate enough to wake up one morning with unwelcome sounds inside your head.

And then it happened to me

I had made appropriately sympathetic noises when people I knew told me what they had to live with daily, it sounds a terrible affliction, enough to drive you mad, but it’s hard to comprehend if you haven’t experienced it personally. I really hadn’t a clue how debilitating and horrible the problem is until I unexpectedly found myself one day with buzzing in my ears that simply wouldn’t go away, however hard I tried to rebalance my ears, blocking them with my fingers and holding my nose and breathing hard. I had no idea what might have triggered the condition. Aspirin and ibuprofen can cause tinnitus, as can certain antibiotics, anti-convulsants and specific antimalarial drugs. But I hadn’t taken any of those - or been anywhere near loud noise.

It just wouldn’t go away. In despair I went to the doctor, only to find that there are no effective tinnitus drugs and nothing he could suggest that he had confidence in. He said I could try masking the sounds by playing the radio loudly, or investing in a white noise ear piece to drown out the noises in my head. But clearly he thought I might just have to live with it long-term and simply ‘get on with it’. He suggested a couple of therapies that might make a difference, though he gloomily added that they probably wouldn’t.

CBT (Cognitive behavioural therapy) uses ‘cognitive restructuring’ and relaxation to change the way you think about and respond to tinnitus, reducing the stress the condition triggers, the fear that it may never leave you. It doesn’t make the problem go away, but it often makes the experience more bearable and less overwhelming.

TRT (Tinnitus retraining therapy) involves one to one counselling, helping you understand exactly what is going on physiologically inside your head: how the auditory system works and why tinnitus happens. It also offers ‘sound therapy’ which involves inserting a small gadget in your ear and attempting to match the sounds inside your head with similar, artificially generated, low-level noises. It’s not a quick fix by any means, and treatment can take up to a couple of years to make a difference, though some studies show the treatment improves severity of symptoms in around 80% of cases.

What else is there?

I came across a free hypnosis tape for tinnitus. And there are myriad podcasts, audio books, subliminal messaging tapes and white noise recordings, the majority of them also free of charge.

MBSR (Mindfulness based stress reduction) is recommended and seems to be helpful for quite a few. ‘Goodbye tinnitus’ is the practically named American essential oil combination said to reduce the symptoms when used regularly at night.

Lenire is a thoroughly researched US medical device that seems to offer hope. It is proven to reduce the symptoms of tinnitus over a period of 12 weeks by combining mild electrical pulses to the tongue with sound stimulation.

Tinnitus light therapy earplugs

Logically, light therapy should be able to bring an imbalanced auditory system back to balance, and so I went on the hunt for the correct frequency of light in the form of earplugs. There aren’t many about which seemed strange in the light of the vast numbers of people who suffer from tinnitus globally. I could only find one company who made them and only a couple of scientific papers to support their efficacy, though the company themselves assured me that they had numerous success stories.

These small, easy to use earplugs are inexpensively priced at £25.00. They beam 650 nm cold laser light deep into your ear, restoring damaged hair cells and collagen tissue in the cochlear area, promoting blood flow in the inner ear that calms inflammation and is said to improve hearing loss and tinnitus.

You use them twice a day, morning and evening, for 30 minutes at a time, making sure that you keep a diary to track your progress because several months down the line it is often difficult to remember how bad your symptoms were when you first started. One study showed that after 3 months of daily use, once a day for 20 minutes, 61% of participants had significantly improved.

Cranial-sacral therapy

I was lucky. I only had to endure tinnitus for a few weeks. Complementary therapy has always come up trumps for me over the years, and when I cast my mind over the hundreds of therapies out there, it seemed to me, logically, that cranio-sacral therapy, which rebalances the lymphatic and glymphatic systems, and calms the central nervous system, might in the process rebalance the vibrations in my head.

And it did. Just one session and I was right as rain. The tinnitus simply disappeared - and has never, to date, fingers firmly crossed, returned.

Fascinating Earwax Facts

Strange isn’t it, the ebb and flow of earwax in your ears? It builds and builds at odd times of year, perhaps in sympathy with the seasons and the weather, and then mysteriously recedes, disappearing from consciousness for weeks or even months at a time.

Do any of us really know what triggers the earwax tides? Do any of us think about it much?

Until suddenly we do, when our attention turns to our ears as a blockage rears its waxy head. Perhaps it sometimes feels like your hearing isn’t as sharp as it used to be? Have you had the odd earache? Are you noticing a feeling of pressure in your ear canal? The wax in your ears may be building up more than normal and so here, in a few brief paragraphs, is much of what you need to know about earwax.

1. Why do we have earwax?

Earwax is simply nature’s way of keeping your ear canal protected. It prevents bacteria and the dust and dirt of everyday life from penetrating deep into your ear and damaging your hearing. It keeps out water and at the same time moisturises your inner ear channels. Weirdly though, it’s kept in check by eating and talking. Your jaw movement is the gatekeeper, keeping it under control, moving wax up and out of the ear when too much builds up, without you even noticing the evacuation. (Conjuring up, however, now that I know this, hideous images of the state of my collar…Up there with the unfortunate snowdrifts of dandruff flakes I am always spotting on other peoples!)

2. Too much build up?

From time to time you become consciously aware of earwax, which means you have too much in there, creating a blockage in your ear canals. If you put things in your ears quite frequently - ear buds for example, or hearing aids, or if you sleep in ear plugs at night - your body may feel it needs to build up higher wax levels to protect your ear, creating that feeling of slight discomfort in the process.

3. So what to do about it?

The most sensible thing to do immediately is make an appointment with your doctor to have your ears professionally cleaned. But in these covid days, face-to-face doctors appointments are few and far between, and with an NHS waiting list of millions, you may not feel your ears are high on their priority schedule. There are earwax clinics too, where they use microsuction to clean your ears or they flush it all out with water. Some people turn to Hopi ear candles, others to fluffy cotton buds.

4. Never use a cotton bud

The majority of us, I would guess, use cotton buds as a matter of course when the question of ear hygiene rears it’s head. Certainly my mother and grandmother reached for them at the drop of a hat. But every doctor I have ever met warns that the cottonwool is too soft to collect the wax effectively and the bud too large to clear it out efficiently and instead it often ends up just pushing the wax deeper into the ear. And, more importantly, amongst all that cotton bud cleaning looms the threat of perforation. That was a shock - having happily prodded away with the soft cottonwool sticks over the decades.

So what to do about it?

Metal earwax cleaners?

I have just been sent a stainless steel ‘ear pick’ to trial. A fabulously slick, light weight thing of strange beauty, looking clinical and efficient, no dusty cottonwool in sight.

I used it initially with trepidation, the cotton bud warnings ringing repeatedly in my ears. The same warnings must apply as equally to perforation with a metal ear-pick as they do to perforation by cotton bud I am quite sure, but I couldn’t see that, with due care and attention paid, the ear-pick could do much harm - and I have to report that (in a weird sort of way) the experience was deeply satisfying.

The metal ear-pick really does the job. It cuts through the wax cleanly. It feels more efficient than its cotton wool competitor and you don’t have to keep repeatedly reaching for another one and then another. Just tap on your hand to examine the wax, rinse and re-use. As many times as you need.

Earwax cleaning is up there with finger nail cutting and nasal hair trimming. One of life’s less attractive constants. I am now addicted to a metal ear pick in my bathroom drawer. An environmentally sound, inexpensive investment - buy it once and keep for a lifetime.

Warning: Always remember that the inner ear canal is extremely delicate and can be easily harmed - only insert the pick gently into the beginning of your ear canal. Your ear drum is only protected by a fragile layer of skin and using too much force might puncture it. And clean thoroughly after each use.

Manipulating Mosquitoes?

I read last week about something that sounded like it had to be an April Fool - although as it’s currently July I presume it is, in fact, a deadly serious possibility.

For the past few years the orange and lemon groves of Florida have been under attack from the ‘citrus greening’ bug that is systematically destroying the thousands of trees that contribute so vastly to Florida’s sunshine state economy, providing around 80% of the USA’s orange juice. The bugs have so far infected over 90% of the fields and are spreading rapidly across the rest of the country. In an attempt to stop them, the local Government has been liberally spraying vast quantities of oxy-tetracycline and streptomycin, powerful antibiotics that they hope will slow the progression of the disease.

There is, however, also the possibility of a nightmare scenario looming, that could seriously alter the balance of nature in America. Florida, as those of you who have holidayed there will know, is big on mosquitoes. And the people who control the appropriate agricultural department have come up with a clever plan to reduce the mosquito population. They commissioned something from the pages of science fiction; a ‘Frankenstein Army’ of 750 million genetically modified mosquitoes created by the British company, Oxitec. That’s a very large amount of mosquitoes indeed to track and trace – and for the next two years, until 2022, they will be releasing them into the Florida Keys.

These mosquitoes are all male and have a gene inserted into their DNA that causes the insect to die before it reaches adulthood - if - and what an odd if this one is - it does not receive tetracycline. Random or what? Not a good ‘if’ this one in these particular and highly publicised circumstances! In the lab, tests showed that if these special mosquitoes were given tetracycline, they would not self-destruct and die but could survive to maturity and mate and reproduce with wild female mosquitoes.

In the areas Oxitec has operated in before, there was a 90% reduction in mosquitoes. But that’s without the Florida tetracycline wild card. A consequence of un-joined up thinking perhaps? Lack of communication? Sheer madness?

Looks like a potential disaster to me. Millions if not billions of mutated mosquitoes shortly on the loose. What could possibly go wrong?!

Indonesia’s happy mosquito project

Far across the oceans in Yogyakata, Indonesia, scientists have been experimenting in a different way, in an attempt to cut the dengue fever pandemic overwhelming the area with up to 400 million infections recorded each year. A novel Wolbachia bacteria mosquito trial sounds almost miraculously successful, far exceeding expectations. 5 million mosquito eggs were infected with the bacteria, which infests the same parts of the mosquito as the dengue virus, and over a period of nine months, a vast number of infected mosquitos were bred and released. Latest figures show a 77% reduction in cases, alongside an 86% reduction in people needing hospital care when bitten. The particularly clever aspect of the experiment is that the Wolbachia affect the reproductive fertility of their hosts, passing themselves on, with extreme cleverness, to the next generation of mosquito and the next. The hope is that this will ultimately wipe out dengue fever in the area altogether, and that perhaps the technique can be adapted to affect diseases such as Zika and yellow fever which are also spread by mosquito bites.

Frankenstein science or cutting edge genius? Only time will tell.

Bee medicine

Long ago, when I was ten and on holiday in the midge-filled Scottish Highlands, I went to the local post office in the back of the wild beyond for some stamps and encountered what can only be described as a vision - a miraculous sight it seemed to me, out of time and place, and entirely and eye-wateringly pink.

Now Scotland is a land of greens and browns, blacks and purple, of mellow mists and vast looming landscapes. Fluorescent pink was most definitely a sight out of the ordinary, still indelibly etched all these years later on my memory with instant recall. It was Barbara Cartland herself, the queen of romance, emerging from a pink Rolls Royce, a pink fur wrapped around her neck against the damp chill, dressed in shades of pink from head to toe, diamonds flashing here and there, her hair coiffed, pink silk handbag toning with her matching manicure and totally inappropriate dainty pink shoes that must have been soaked through by the flood water and liquid mud that had dictated that I wear Wellingtons that Autumn morning.

Unforgettable.

I became a fervent fan. I found that she had written 723 novels, (imagine that - I have only written seven books and found that tiring enough!) most of them romantic, and sold more than 750 million copies in total. Mind boggling. Amongst those endless love stories, she also wrote a book called ‘The Magic of Honey’. Which is where I first learnt about her passion for and total conviction about the healing properties of the bees.

2 Royal Jelly

Barbara Cartland supplemented daily with lashings of royal jelly in the belief that it would help her live to a ripe old age. She died aged 99 so it certainly seemed to work for her, though there’s little formal science to officially support its anti-ageing claims.

Royal jelly is a highly nutritious creamy white substance that young bees make to feed queen bee larvae. It’s an anti-oxidant, with anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and has been shown to lower cholesterol, reduce menopausal symptoms and speed up wound healing.

3 Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is a crunchy mix of flower pollen, nectar, enzymes, honey, wax and bee secretions. Sounds dubious, but in fact it tastes quite nice. Try some scattered on a bowl of fruit and yoghurt for a healthy start to your day. It contains over 250 immune boosting substances, including amino acids, proteins, carbs, lipids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants and is said to speed wound healing, reduce the severity of allergies and wipe out harmful bacteria. Early studies have found bee pollen extract restricts tumor growth and stimulates apoptosis — the programmed death of cells — in cases of leukaemia, prostate and colon cancer. 4 Propolis

This is one of my go-to favourites whenever I feel a tickle in my throat or a cold coming on. A few squirts down my throat, and a couple up my nose, and it seems to very effectively hit viruses and bacteria for six.

Propolis is a resin-like substance collected by the bees and used to seal the gaps and holes in their hive. It’s an immune booster, a natural anti-inflammatory, anti- biotic, anti-fungal, anti- viral and anti-septic.

Choose the version mixed with honey and you could get quite addicted. I always have a bottle sitting on my desk, and I rarely get colds or flu. Not sure whether that’s down to the propolis or the strength of my immune system…either way, I just like having it close at hand

There is recent research showing it’s effective against COVID-19. This month’s Reboot Hero is the Life Coach, Hermione Crawford. And before you turn away, with images of Californian new age mumbo jumbo gurus or Gwyneth Paltrow goop followers in your head, please read on a while because Hermione is very definitely no such thing. I met her on a podcast a few weeks back, and she is empathetic, kind and wise. We all have difficult issues to deal with in our lives, and having a neutral independent trained advisor (no, this is not the same as talking things over with your friends!) to counsel and steer you can be invaluable.

The point of talking to a life coach is basically to work towards being happier, healthier and more successful in life. And who could ask for more than that? Life coaches do exactly what it says on the packet. They coach you to find solutions in areas of your life where you are struggling. They sort out your work/life balance and help you with achieving personal goals. They look at what's going on at work (Executive Coaches who focus solely on your business life also exist), in your family, and wherever else you are stressed. Life coaches motivate you: to feel better, to deal with bad habits, to resolve difficult relationships.

You can go to a life coach at any age or stage of life - when you are entirely well; as a preventative measure at a time when you feel that stress is building; or when you feel life has got on top of you and you can no longer cope.

Where most mind therapies focus on resolving issues in the past that may be affecting your present, coaching looks to the future. Coaches do not diagnose. They deal with current problems and help you to make changes where they would be beneficial. They look for decisions, actions and measurable results and goals. You can sign up for a few sessions, or decide you need more regular support and encouragement.

I couldn’t meet up with Hermione to do a video as I usually do, but I asked her instead to write a bit about what she does.

This is how she describes it:

‘However you describe coaching, the industry has finally come of age. Gone (hopefully!) are people doing an afternoon course and calling themselves coaches – my course took four years, multiple modules and essays, plus 90 clinical hours of practice. Like psychotherapy and counselling before it, the industry is becoming regulated and accredited, and a huge amount of scientific information is now available about its transformational qualities. There are coaches for every imaginable stage of life and need: career, business, empathy, relationship, wellbeing, divorce, work/life balance, third stage of life, spiritual, transformational… the list goes on. I use tried-and-tested tools and strategies from all major schools of psychological and scientific discovery, following a cross-discipline approach.

As well as adults I’m lucky enough to work with some of the freshest, brightest and most challenging minds in the world – teens. None of us are born knowing how to handle stress and anxiety, bounce back from a disappointment, manage a revision timetable or have a difficult conversation with a friend, and yet we expect kids should… just do it. As parents and teachers we do the best we can to teach them, but in an ever-more demanding and complex world, an extra helping hand can make all the difference: it’s so much better to have a strong foundation laid before a worry or stress becomes something more serious. Research shows that the presence of one or more caring, committed non-related adults in a child’s life increases the likelihood that they flourish.

There’s no classic teenager client – my coachees range from head girls and sportsmen who are thriving and want to improve their performance or plan ahead, to those who are finding life difficult to navigate. Organisation and planning, exam preparation, interview and public speaking, focus, confidence, communication, relationships, climate and world worries, sleep, resilience... All things where some knowledge and strategies can create a huge difference. And, as you might imagine – particularly post lockdown – stress management and demotivation come up again and again, for teens and adults. I also love working with those who have SEN like dyslexia and ADHD, to help them access different ways of revising, using all the senses – reading words is only one way of retaining information!

Coaching isn't therapy, and I don't go deep into the psyche. However when challenges arise we always deal with them, and if sometimes that means signposting and referring my clients to a therapist I will help them to find the right person. Quite often I work in tandem with a therapist, unknotting the day-to-day challenges while they work on the issues behind everything.

If coaching sounds like something that would be of benefit, the first step is for the client and I to meet (physically or virtually) for a 25-minute introductory session to see if coaching is right for them. After that, the first session will be about setting goals in a specific area, for example focus and motivation, then putting in place a programme working towards that goal. If challenges or blocks come up along the way – which is very common – we work on solutions to get round the block, or switch direction to better reflect the client’s needs.

Sessions are solution-focused and as a result, coaching is normally time-limited, generally 6-12 sessions. Each session is ideally 35-40 mins in length, though for older, emotionally mature clients they can be up to an hour, and for younger clients with short attention spans or those with attention disorders they can be as short as 20-25 minutes. The session cost includes wraparound care, ie planning sessions in advance and following up with clients, supporting them to practice their tools and helping them ‘stick to the plan’. Which, let’s be honest, is the hard part! But because coaching is solution oriented and goal focused, teenagers respond hugely and I feel incredibly privileged to be helping as they find their feet in life. I also enjoy working in parent partnership – it’s normal to pull away from parents as part of the maturation process but it can be hard on kids and their parents.

On a more sobering note, Generation Z simply cannot afford to ignore the kind of soft skills that are developed by coaching. The world is changing so fast, much of the information they learn at school and uni will soon be obsolete. This generation (all of us actually) must invest in skills and tools which are multi-functional, and our own productive abilities, to ensure a viable old age. Creativity, resilience, communication, self-care and management, and interest in continued learning are paramount’.
