If we are talking affordable beauty brands that know what they are doing, e.l.f. is at the top of that list.

They are one of the first brands I check when I want to try a new primer, setting spray, concealer, or viral-style product without spending high-end money first.

Some e.l.f. products feel like true dupes, and some are just good products on their own. Either way, I feel like they understand the assignment more often than not.

what I usually look for from e.l.f.:

e.l.f. is one of those brands where I do not expect every product to be life-changing, but I do expect to find something worth trying. They make it really easy to experiment without feeling like you just wasted your whole beauty budget.

Essence is one of those brands that still surprises me because the prices are so low, but some of the products are genuinely so good.

If you are newer to makeup, testing out different products, or just do not want to spend a lot on mascara, brows, blush, or lip products, Essence is a good place to start.

Their mascaras especially have had a chokehold on the internet for years, and honestly, I get it.

Essence is perfect when you want to try something new, but you do not want to spend $25 to find out if you even like that kind of product.

milani

Milani feels like one of the more polished affordable brands to me.

It still has drugstore pricing, but some of the products feel a little more elevated than basic drugstore makeup. Their complexion products, blushes, bronzers, and glow products are usually what catch my attention first.

Milani is also one of the brands I look at when I want something that gives more of a high-end makeup feel without the high-end price.

Milani is not always the cheapest affordable brand, but when they get it right, they really get it right. This is one of the brands I trust more for face products.

l’oréal

L’Oréal is one of those classic drugstore brands that I think people forget about because it is not always the trendiest one on TikTok.

But when it comes to complexion, mascara, and more mature-skin-friendly products, L’Oréal is still very much worth looking at.

I especially like L’Oréal when I am trying to find something that feels a little more practical. Not necessarily the most viral. Not always the cutest packaging. Just a product that works.

Flower Beauty is such a pretty affordable brand, and I feel like it does not always get the attention it deserves.

The packaging, the formulas, and the overall vibe feel more elevated than a lot of drugstore makeup. It is one of those brands where I do not just think “affordable.” I think “this could actually sit next to my more expensive products and not feel out of place.”

I have found some really good products from Flower Beauty, especially for brows, complexion, glow, and setting products.

Not every NYX product is my favorite, but when I need a specific makeup staple at an affordable price, NYX is usually one of the first brands I check.

Their concealers, mascaras, foundations, and long-wear lip products are usually what I pay attention to most. Maybelline may not always feel as “new and exciting” as some of the trendier brands, but they have a lot of solid everyday products.

I especially like looking at CoverGirl when someone wants something more forgiving for dry skin, mature skin, fine lines, or everyday wear.

Sometimes the best product is not the one with the most hype. Sometimes it is the one that actually works better for your skin.

I do not automatically trust every random affordable beauty product online, so I like to test these a little more carefully. But I have tried some UCANBE products that were way better than I expected, especially for the price.

Affordable does not always mean better.

And a dupe does not always mean the high-end product is not worth it.

Sometimes the splurge really is the better product. Sometimes the affordable version gets you close enough. And sometimes the affordable product is so good that I do not even feel like I am settling.

That is why I like testing both.

The red one immediately gave cruise energy.
The white one felt more elevated and vacation-y.
And the black and white textured suits were giving simple, wearable, easy to pack, and not overly trendy.

For $14, I expected it to be fine. But it actually held my makeup in place, the mist felt nice and even, and once it dried down, it didn’t feel sticky or gross. It also comes in a bigger bottle, so you’re getting a lot more product for the price.

So, which one would I buy?

If you love Urban Decay All Nighter but hate the price, I’d try the e.l.f. Stay All Night first. It’s affordable, easy to find, and did what I needed it to do.

If you want the most product for the money, UCANBE All Day Fixer is worth the buy.

These two prove you don’t always have to spend Urban Decay money to get your makeup to last.

It has a lightweight, creamy balm texture, gives buildable coverage, and leaves the skin looking softer and more radiant. It’s especially nice if you want your foundation to smooth without looking flat, dry, or cakey.

best for:
Mature skin, dry skin, normal skin, and anyone who wants a more forgiving foundation formula.

before you buy:
This one can be harder to find now, and shade availability may be limited depending on where you shop. So if you see your shade and you already know you love it, grab it. But if you can’t find it, I’d look at the newer True Match Hyaluron Tinted Balm instead.

the difference:
The Age Perfect balm feels more like the original mature-skin-friendly drugstore answer to KVD. The newer True Match Hyaluron Tinted Balm feels like the current version of that idea. (see below)

L'Oreal True Match Hyaluron Tinted Balm Foundation

price: $11.99-15.99

If you were interested in the KVD Good Apple balm because you wanted something creamy, smoothing, and easy to wear, this is the newer L’Oréal option I’d look at first.

The True Match Hyaluron Tinted Balm has that balm foundation idea, but it feels more current and easier to shop now. It gives light-to-medium coverage, has a radiant finish, and is made with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, so it makes more sense for someone who wants coverage without that dry, heavy foundation feeling.

best for:

Mature skin, dry skin, normal skin, or anyone who wants light-to-medium coverage with a smoother, more hydrated finish.

tried + tested:

This is not going to be the same full-coverage moment as KVD Good Apple. It’s softer, lighter, and more natural-looking. But that’s also why it may work better if full-coverage balm foundations usually settle into your lines or texture.

If your skin does better with hydrating formulas and you want something that looks pretty without feeling like a mask, this is the one I’d try.

the difference:

The Covergirl + Olay Simply Ageless Foundation has a creamier, more hydrating feel, so it gives the skin a smoother, softer look without feeling as dry. It still gives coverage, but it’s a little more forgiving if you have fine lines, wrinkles, dry patches, or texture.

Dry skin, mature skin, fine lines, or anyone who wants coverage without that overly matte foundation look.

before you buy:

The white Olay swirl can lighten the foundation once it blends into the skin, so you may want to consider going one to two shades darker than you normally would. Trust me on this one.

This one is not an exact KVD texture dupe. It’s more of a “same full-coverage idea, better for drier skin” option. If you loved the idea of KVD Good Apple but didn’t love how it wore on your skin, this may be the better affordable alternative.

Girl’s mission is “bringing artistry to life by providing prestige-quality color cosmetics to all makeup users alike absolutely affordable luxury” as an affordable luxury cosmetics brand, and I could not agree more. I can’t wait to see what else they come out with!

This brand is supposed to compare to prestige brands, and they’ve also won a lot of awards, so I’m pretty excited to see what it’s all about. One swipe and I was in awe! This definitely has some pigment, so you need to grab your shade but I applied this after my foundation and it was like a magic eraser for texture…speechless.

This was my first time with a serum foundation. It says medium to buildable coverage, nice glass bottle. It was very runny, I used a microfiber sponge to apply it to one side and swiped it one with a flat foundation brush. It feels extremely weightless, very natural with good coverage. This would be perfect for those who struggle with cakey or flaky after foundation issues. It did exactly what it says.
