Race for Life Charity Event at Jags Costa Esuri

Deborah and Helen are organising 3km or 5km Fun Run starting at Jags Bistro on Saturday 5th May. It costs 3 euros to enter if you do not have sponsors, best to get Sponsors then. The run starts at 09.30 am outside Jags.

There is also an Evening fund raising event at at La Taboa Hotel in Villablanca. This starts at 19.30. Entry is 5euros and includes food and a Disco, raffles and fun and games. There is also chances to win free drinks every 30 minutes throughout the night.
La Taboa Hotel is also offering a special rate for people who wish to stay of 25 euros for the night

Portuguese Motorway Tolls are Illegal (Official)

"The European Commission has responded to a formal complaint made by the city council of Aveiro and has called on the Portuguese government to change the laws on charging tolls on the formerly free SCUT roads, including the Via do Infante in the Algarve (A22).

The judgement of the European Commission (EC) is in response to a formal complaint by the municipality of Aveiro, which argued that the introduction of tolls on the formerly free SCUT road system "violated the principle of freedom of movement and the principle of non discrimination on grounds of nationality."

A request for clarification was sent to the Portuguese government by the EC, but a 'totally inadequate' reply by the Portuguese authorities failed to provide a reasoned opinion leading to the EC formally to request "more explanation and documentation to justify the legislation passed, its meaning and scope, and why it should be an exception to EU law."

The Portuguese government then was warned that "if the rules were not changed, as they are contrary to the Community legislative framework, the government would be sued and prosecuted in the EU Court of Justice for breach and violation of mandatory rules of Community law."

The Municipality of Aveiro, in a statement, said it hoped that the national authorities would comply with the decision of the European Commissioners and urgently review the national legislation that has enabled the introduction of tolls in the first place.

The committee set up to fight for the abolition of tolls on the A23, A24 and A25 motorways welcomed the news but stressed that "the essential question has not been taken into account by Brussels." Francisco Almeida, spokesman for the commission, said that the essential question is one of the profound impact of tolls on the economy of the regions affected. The complaint by Aveiro focused primarily on freedom of movement, and non-discrimination by virtue of nationality."

The municipality of Aveiro wrote in its complaint to the EC that "the introduction of tolls had violated the principle of freedom of movement and the principle of non-discrimination on grounds of nationality; both are cornerstones of the laws that governs us."

For Almeida, "all actions that contribute to fighting the crime that the introduction of tolls represents are welcome," repeating the call for local authorities, business associations and citizens to engage in this fight which will be won "through the courts, either with recourse to the European Union or with the protests made. "

None of the Algarve’s municipalities used this EC complaint mechanism, nor have any other entities such as business associations or unions, despite strong local opposition to the tolls and the significant decline in traffic on the Via do Infante, that once was considered essential for the structural development of the Algarve.

The Algarve's 'Committee of Users of the Via do Infante' will go ahead on March 8th with its protest and slow drive from Boliqueime along the EN125 to Faro."

Jamega Tour Visit Costa Esuri

The Jamega Pro Golf Tour are starting their 2012 Golf Season at Costa Esuri. They are playing two 2 day events at Costa Esuri and 1 event at La Monacilla. The events are from 20th March to 30th March.

Restaurants in Ayamonte

There is a new restaurant opened in Ayamonte called El Ferry. It is situated between Laguna Square and the Ferry just down from Solbank. We ate there twice in a week and were very pleased with the food on both visits. While it is not particularly cheap it provides another place where you can get a a varied menu in a lovely setting.

Golf in the Area

I have just returned from CE after a 2 week stay with friends. We played golf at CE, the West course is very good condition with the greens being exceptionally good. The East course is closed at the moment.

There are some very good prices at other courses in the local area. One of my favorite courses near CE is La Monacilla near Huelva. This course has been designed by Jose Olazabal and is a tree lined course with large water hazards. Do not be put off by it's relative young age because it has been built in an established forest with many mature trees. The club house has only opened in the last 6 months and is a modern glass structure.

While the course is flat do not think it is an easy walk because it is a very long course off the Black tees and you have some long walks between Greens and Tees.

For 3 players and 1 Buggy we paid 100 euros. Exceptionally good value for a very interesting course.

We also played the Oceanico Faldo Course at Amendoeira near Silves on the Algarve. I enjoyed playing this very good course. We paid 70 euros including a Buggy.

Quinto do Vale are offering Twilight Golf (after 1300) for 29 euros.

New Restaurant and Bar at Esuri

Great news for Esuri.

Jag and his business partner Gavin are opening a new venture on Esuri. They are taking over the building which was going to be the Villa Owners Clubhouse. It overlooks the 18th Green of the West Course. the proposed opening is Easter.

The Shop at Las Lomas Town houses

The shop at Las Lomas is open for your shopping. It is particularly good for fresh Bread. It is also an alternative to the golf club for a drink. It has a stunning view if you sit outside with views across the golf course to Portugal.

Golf near Costa Esuri

On a recent trip to Costa Esuri we played both courses. The West course is looking superb and was busy with golfers. The East course has definitely improved since September with the greens putting a lot better, although they are still a far bit slower than the West course. The East course provided a greater challenge than normal, if that is possible, due to the 40kph wind blowing from the north.

We also played Quinta da Cima which was in great condition but I thought was overhyped and over priced at 73 euro. I found out after we played that if you book through Costa Esuri Pro shop you can play Quita da Cima and Ria for 59 euro.

Restaurants in Ayamonte

I have just spent a week at Costa Esuri with some friends and have been enjoying the various restaurants in Ayamonte.
We ate at Jags which is great for your Indian fix but they also do a wide variety of other cuisines. The Sunday Roast comes highly recommended.

Asiatico served excellent food with a wide selection of Chinese/Cantonese, Japanese and Thai food. I can definitely recommend the Spicy Prawns with Cantonese style rice.

The best food we ate was at Bodeguita in La Lota square. For 3 day they had a guest chef from France. They offered a 5 course French menu for 30 euro which is not cheap, but for the quality of food offered good value. We returned there later in the week and each had a fillet steak which was absolutely superb.
