Well, it has been a hectic few weeks again. Whenever we plan a trip abroad, I alway try to keep my agenda as empty as possible just before departure and I always fail. I have been quite busy with several commissioned shoots lately and I am very happy with the results, but now it is time to do some 'personal work' again. 'Personal work', that's rubbish, isn't it? I am tired. These summer times with ridiculously early and late sunrises and sunsets are wearing me out. But the prospect of a beautiful sunset is just too tantalizing so at half past seven in the evening I get in my car and begin the one hour drive to tonight's chosen location. The sun won't set before ten o'clock in the evening so there is still time enough to get a cup of coffee. One hour later and it's game on. Yesterday was a rainy day and I was stuck at the office again. But I knew there were better times ahead. There was a northern wind blowing and looking at the weather maps, I knew the skies would clear in the evening. During my workshops and talks I often teach people how important it is as a landscape photographer to know about weather systems and wind directions. Yesterday was a prime example.

So close and worlds apart

Here's one to think about. Both locations are within a five minutes' drive from each other and these images were made on the same evening. The first shows the Wadden Sea at low tide. The Netherlands’ last wilderness. It has a tremendous importance to all kinds of wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of waders, ducks, and geese use the area as a migration stopover or wintering site. It should have been a perfect day. In the morning, I had an assignment in Delft which was a perfect stepping stone for a visit to Rotterdam Harbor. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day and I had the complete afternoon and evening to myself. Six o'clock in the morning and my alarm clock is buzzing. Getting up is easy in this time of the year. Can't wait for those early sunrises next summer....It's been a busy time with lots of talks, meetings and workshops. But not today. Looking back, moving ahead

It’s the last day of the year and I’m getting sentimental. Looking back, the start of 2011 gave us an epic winter with great light, a lot of snow and some fairytale landscapes. Spring brought us to Marrakesh in Morocco. The narrow streets of the souks in the old city forced me to work in a completely new and different way. Very challenging and great fun. It was definitely one of the highlights of the year for me.

Same spot, another day. I just can't resist. This time though, I am not alone. I brought my long time friend and fellow photographer Ron ter Burg with me. He was anxious to try out this location and I did not mind giving it another go. Things are never the same. It is the event that matters

It is three o'clock in the afternoon when I arrive at my chosen location at the IJsselmeer near Workum. Plenty of time to prepare, to check out the conditions and to find the best spot along the beach. As I park my car and get into my thrusted wellies, I can see kite surfers have taken over 'my' spot. Not to worry. When the light fades, their adrenaline rush will be over and mine begins. For now I can relax and enjoy the show they are giving me. It is great to see that the light is back. Misty Mosel morning

Well, I am back from a short trip to the Mosel region. Two days of travel, three days of location scouting, sunsets, sunrises, relaxation and wine. It could be worse. Autumn is really picking up it's pace now and the colors were great. So was the wine. On such a short trip, luck plays an important part in getting the right shots. De afgelopen weken voelden aan als een grote achtbaan. Veel leuke opdrachten, lezingen, seminars en workshops. September en oktober waren drukke maanden met verschillende hoogtepunten. Één van de hoogtepunten voor mij was de masterclass landschapsfotografie die ik ieder jaar in Zeeland geef. Begin oktober was het weer zover. Helaas zat het weer dit jaar niet echt mee. Toch zijn er ook nu weer prachtige foto's gemaakt, waarvan je er hier een aantal van deelnemers ziet.

Dat is een vraag die ik vaak gesteld krijg. En alhoewel het soms voelt alsof het afbreuk doet aan alle geduld, gedrevenheid en techniek die je in het veld hebt moeten toepassen, begrijp ik de vraag best. Ik houd van volle kleuren en grote contrasten en dan ligt de vraag wellicht voor de hand. En ik maak het er niet gemakkelijker op als ik antwoord met een volmondig JA en NEE. Ik hou van het Groningse landschap. Natuurlijk, ik ben er opgegroeid. Maar het heeft karakter. Ruig, wijds, open. Luchten die domineren. Ik ken het als mijn eigen broekzak. De kleine tussendoorweggetjes. Langs kleine dorpjes en door de graanvelden. Geen horizonvervuiling. Geen lichtvervuiling. En vol verrassingen. Kleine verhalen. Verhalen die ik soms niet ken. Nothing changes

Er is veel gebeurt sinds mijn laatste blog. Het boek is er bijna, verschillende artikelen in de bladen, lezingen en workshops. Het is een beetje een gekkenhuis. Maar wel een leuke. Ik geniet er met volle teugen van. Toch blijft voor mij één ding altijd hetzelfde; de belevenis van het fotograferen. Voor mij is het, sinds 2002 toen ik voor het eerst een camera kocht, alleen maar leuker geworden. Maar het gevoel is hetzelfde. Dat verwachtingsvolle gevoel als je op pad gaat. De zenuLeesmeer

Ik hijg nog na. 6 dagen intense geuren, kleuren en de hectiek van de souks in de medina. Kun je je voorstellen hoe dat voelt als je als landschaps- en natuurfotograaf de rust en de stilte van het leven buiten de stad gewend bent? Het was een geweldige belevenis en mijn eerste kennismaking met Noord Afrika. Het ware gezicht van februari

Februari laat dit jaar zijn ware gezicht zien. Of het is zacht, grijs en grauw of de wind draait richting het oosten en het is zonnig, koud en guur. Die laatste situatie lijkt de mooiste, maar schijn bedriegt. Ondanks de zonnig omstandigheden is er vaak sprake van zeer hard, wit licht. En dat betekent weinig dynamiek, harde contrasten en vlakke kleuren. Voor landschapsfotografie is het op dit soort dagen het beste om gebruik te maken van het licht voor zonsopkomst of na zonsondergang. Geen veLeesmeer

Te weinig strand

Ik kom te weinig op het strand. Moet vaker gaan. Goed voor de ziel zeggen ze. Uitwaaien. Kop leeg en op de buik in het zand. Kijken. Kunstwerken van de natuur zoeken. Luisteren naar de wind en het water. Goed voor de artistieke kant van de hersenen. Rechterkant. Grappig. Zouden ze dat in de tweede kamer weten?

Licht

Allereerst wens ik jullie natuurlijk in alle opzichten een mooi 2011! Geluk, gezondheid en mooi licht. En licht, daar wil ik het eens over hebben. Want de winter is voor mij vooral het seizoen van het mooie licht. Zonder het juiste licht zijn we als landschapsfotografen hopeloos verloren. Een prachtig landschap wordt zonder het juiste licht iets vlaks en emotieloos. En een weinig boeiend landschap kan met het juiste licht transformeren naar iets heel speciaals.

Het jaar zit er bijna op en ik kan tevreden terugkijken. Het was een bijzonder jaar met veel mooie momenten. Als ik de foto's terugkijk beleef ik die momenten weer opnieuw en ben ik blij dat ik ze heb mee mogen maken. 2010 van ook een succesvol en druk jaar met een record aantal workshops. En alhoewel ik workshops geven ontzettend leuk vind en het, als het kan, altijd zal blijven doen, ga ik er wel minder geven in 2011. Het is simpelweg te druk.
