A mais antiga referência histórica a Bodhidharma é a Luoyang jia lan ji ("A História dos Mosteiros de Luoyang"), escrito por Yang Xuanzhi em 547 AD Yang afirma ter visitado pessoalmente o Ning Temple Yong e encontrado lá um velho estrangeiro chamado Sramana Bodhidharma, que afirmou ele, tinha 150 anos de idade. Bodhidharma resistiu algum tempo na corte do imperador Wu Dai (465-550), mas abriu mão depois de perceber que o imperador não era suficientemente merecedor do ensino. Ele viajou para a parte norte da província, atravessando o rio Yangtze (de acordo com uma versão, milagrosamente de pé sobre uma cana), chegando finalmente em Luoyang, um centro ativo de bolsa de estudos budistas. Lá ele tornou-se impopular, afirmando que as escrituras budistas eram apenas uma ferramenta para atingir a iluminação e não precisa ser estudada por tempo indeterminado para o seu próprio bem. Se as coisas vão bem, a mente fica feliz; se vão mal, reage tornando-se infeliz. Mesmo quando estamos felizes, essa felicidade não é completa. Por exemplo, quando obtemos algo que desejamos, uma aquisição ou um novo parceiro, ficamos excitados e nos apegamos a isso.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

Se formos obrigados a trabalhar com alguém que detestamos, ficaremos bravos e nos sentiremos prejudicados. Como resultado, nosso rendimento será afetado e o dia no trabalho se tornar-se-á estressante e insatisfatório.&lt;/div&gt;

Essas oscilações de humor ocorrem porque estamos intimamente envolvidos com as situações exteriores. Parecemos uma criança que, construindo um castelo de areia, sente entusiasmo quando ele fica pronto, mas, logo a seguir, se decepciona ao vê-lo ser destruído pela maré.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;i&gt;Treinando em meditação, criamos espaço e clareza interiores, que nos capacitam a controlar nossas mentes, quaisquer que sejam as circunstâncias externas.
